Found in Highland Park at about 3:30 p.m. on a Friday afternoon by South Minneapolis boys, Peter Schow and Steve Gronoli, with the aid of a metal detector.

Clue 1

Published on Jan. 26, 1986

If you're searching for the regal bounty,
We suggest you start with Ramsey County;
And we're telling you now, just to be nice,
That it's not in a park with a palace of ice.

Our Thoughts: Gives the typical Ramsey County clue and eliminates Phalen Lake Park, where the famous 1986 ice palace was located, as a potential hiding place.

Clue 2

Published on Jan. 27, 1986

We'll surely admit
That it hides in a park,
But other than that,
You're still in the dark.

Our Thoughts: Simply states that the medallion is hidden in a public park.

Clue 3

Published on Jan. 27, 1986

Think of a cap
That you'll never wear.
It's made of steel
And already there.

Our Thoughts: The "cap made of steel" refers to a 2-inch pipe cap familiar to plumbers. When screwed together with a plug, this contraption makes an ideal place in which to hide something like, say, a medallion.

Clue 4

Published on Jan. 28, 1986

Having fun
And picnics, too.
This little hint
Can surely help you.

Our Thoughts: All that's given here is the nearly picnic tables — a little hesitation clue thrown in for good measure.

Clue 5

Published on Jan. 28, 1986

People travel
Through the air,
Without an engine
To keep them there.

Our Thoughts: A walkway that crosses Montreal Avenue is visible from the treasure site.

Clue 6

Published on Jan. 29, 1986

If you've pined away
For news of the treasure,
Here are some words
To ponder with pleasure.

Our Thoughts: Pine trees are located nearby. Another "hold your horses" clue if I ever saw one.

Clue 7

Published on Jan. 29, 1986

Kids by the hundreds
Followed this guy,
And this can help
If you'll really try.

Our Thoughts: Refers to the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Hamline Avenue is located nearby.

Clue 8

Published on Jan. 30, 1986

When the snow is gone
And you a low score,
You're near plenty of places
Where you can call "Fore!"

Our Thoughts: The use of "Fore!" should be channeling all energies toward parks with golf courses; in this case, Highland.

Clue 9

Published on Jan. 30, 1986

Come on laddies,
And lassies, too;
Have yourselves a fling.
Use your heads
And you'll get close
To the treasure of the king.

Our Thoughts: Refers to Scotland and the Highland Fling, a folk dance of that country.

Clue 10

Published on Jan. 31, 1986

Think of a guy
Whose nickname is Tony.
You're getting real close,
And that's no baloney.

Our Thoughts: Giving it away street by street, this clue refers to Antonio Drive.

Clue 11

Published on Jan. 31, 1986

Not too far away
From the treasure you seek,
There's a Canadian word
Your interest to pique.

Our Thoughts: Refers to nearby Montreal Avenue; Montreal is a city in Canada.

Clue 12

It's filled in now,
But it use to be
A fun-filled place
Where swimsuits you'd see.

Highland Park
Is where it's at —
Near the deserted pool
And that is that.

Our Thoughts: It's not exactly an "X" on the spot, but the hunt never got to this clue, so we'll never know how it stood up as the last clue of the lot.

During the 1990’s, the St Paul Pioneer Press opened online discussion forums. These forums were called Water Coolers. The forums had discussion topics related to sports, politics, news, and current events. Each year, the Pioneer Planet – the online section of the Pioneer Press – opened a discussion forum as a media for hunters to discuss the clues for the Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt.

During the earlier years, one might find a few hundred posts during the hunt. As more hunters had computers, those numbers jumped. From 1997 to 1998, the number of posts increased from the hundreds to the 5-digit thousands. It was during the 1998 hunt the Cooler Crew was born.

The community spirit and teamwork displayed in the Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt thread was inspiring. The group of hunters found themselves at the end of a hunt not wanting to let go of new friendships and the camaraderie found on the Water Cooler board. The idea emerged to do what anyone would do in the middle of winter in Minnesota. A picnic in Cherokee was planned - the first Rehash Bash!
