Finder details and explanations to be provided over time. For now, we thought it was about time to get the clues up.

Tally ho, the hunt is on,
The medallion is your bounty,
A lot of ground you'll have to cover,
But it's all in Ramsey County.

A lot of trees
Are all around
And a lot of traffic,
Hear that sound.

Things you need
Can be bought nearby,
But not the morsels
That hang in the sky.

Our Thoughts: Refers to things that can be bought at any of the stores at Rice and County Road C and morsels in the sky are acorns on the trees.

Clue 4

A famous person
Of the old wild west,
When you know the name,
It'll help for the rest.

Our Thoughts: Refers to Annie Oakley, there are oak trees in the area and the medallion was wrapped in oak leaves.

We're sure of that.
This will help you find
Where the treasures at.

Clue 6

A staple diet
In old Shanghi
Think of a food
And you'll be nearby.

Our Thoughts: Refers to Rice Street nearby.

Clue 7

Look for the water
In its frozen state,
When in the hunt
You participate.

Clue 8

Published on Feb. 5, 1981

A flower you give
To show affection
But here and now
It gives a direction.

Our Thoughts: Refers to Roseville, where Acorn Park is located.

Clue 9

Too much ice
Where you've been looking?
Keep on going.
Now you're cookin'.

Our Thoughts: Limited the size of the ice near where the treasure was located, eliminating a lake as a possible site.

Clue 10

Published on Feb. 6, 1981

A senorita's word
That goes with a smile.
We give you this clue
With a bit of guile.

Our Thoughts: Si which translates to "C" as in County Road C.

Clue 11

Mighty oaks
From these go grow.
Follow this clue
And steal the show.

Our Thoughts: Talks of the mighty oaks from which comes acorns and the name of the park.

Clue 12

East of the hockey rink
At Roseville's Acorn Park,
Wrapped in  leaves,
It was placed in the dark.

Our Thoughts: Pin-pointed the location as east of the hockey rinks at Acorn Park and specified the medallion was wrapped in leaves.

During the 1990’s, the St Paul Pioneer Press opened online discussion forums. These forums were called Water Coolers. The forums had discussion topics related to sports, politics, news, and current events. Each year, the Pioneer Planet – the online section of the Pioneer Press – opened a discussion forum as a media for hunters to discuss the clues for the Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt.

During the earlier years, one might find a few hundred posts during the hunt. As more hunters had computers, those numbers jumped. From 1997 to 1998, the number of posts increased from the hundreds to the 5-digit thousands. It was during the 1998 hunt the Cooler Crew was born.

The community spirit and teamwork displayed in the Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt thread was inspiring. The group of hunters found themselves at the end of a hunt not wanting to let go of new friendships and the camaraderie found on the Water Cooler board. The idea emerged to do what anyone would do in the middle of winter in Minnesota. A picnic in Cherokee was planned - the first Rehash Bash!
