Come celebrate a tradition gay and bright,
With Carnival pleasures day and night.
The theme "Arctic Antics" is frigid and funny.
But search in our city means laughter and money.

When considering clues from every angle,
The mind seems a confused tangle.
One key is safety in this scramble,
With risk or danger never gamble.

Clue 3

The medallion hides in a public place.
Respect for all property rules in this case.
We offer no rocket flight to the moon.
But to bridge the generation gap may be yours soon.

Our Thoughts: Hints that the medallion was on a bridge.

Far off in the distance with powers prophetic,
See 3M and First National stand high and authentic.
Brothers under the skin with same values at stake.
For a clue that is closer make a clean break.

Today science in the lab reveals achievement quite stupendous.
An enzyme "made" by man to high school students seems tremendous.
Feats here and in space give a scholar great existence.
If against escape and drugs he develops more resistance.

What is more pleasant on a balmy spring day,
Than driving by apple orchards down Hastings way?
With winter winds blowing I invite you to be,
Guests in my clues closet for a detection spree.

Our Thoughts: Pleasant Ave. near bridge.

Clue 7

Tracks consisting of steel and ties.
With poles for power and signals rise.
Start with zero, through four numeral count.
By adding this clue discovery hopes mount.

Our Thoughts: Milwaukee Railroad tracks nearby.

Clue 8

Published on Feb. 6, 1969

Southeast of the site are stacks, smoke and vapors.
In subzero cold performing eerie capers.
Vulcan's men stir up a good brew,
From a place of refreshment they discover a clue.

Our Thoughts: NSP stacks could be seen from site. Refreshments refers to Schmidt Brewing Co. in neighborhood.

Clue 9

Published on Feb. 6, 1969

Grab your skates and look for a rink
Finding tow is a possible link.
One high above and one below,
The area between work easy and slow.

Our Thoughts: Monroe Rink below and Linwood Rink on the hill.

Clue 10

The way is free after thirty-five
With birthdays forgotten be glad you're alive.
Face the hazy future with completed plans.
Treasure in the pocket and rejuvenated glands.

Our Thoughts: Referred to I-35E plans that were complete, but the road was not.

Clue 11

Waves of dissent are in the news each day.
Harmony and peace seem lost along the way.
With green of summer gone, the landscape is white.
Depend on many arrows for direction that is right.

Our Thoughts: Green refers to Monroe Green Wave.

Clue 12

East of the treasure a product is stored.
Small and grainy is substance when moved is poured.
To use is essential when weather is bad,
Helps prevent temper tantrums both angry and mad.

Our Thoughts: Referred to the City Salt storage bins that were East of the site.

Clue 13

Climb a small steep hill where light snow slides.
In a crevice between rocks and treasure coin hides.
Victoria, Pleasant and Jefferson mark the site.
62 feet Southeast from a bridge sign is right.

During the 1990’s, the St Paul Pioneer Press opened online discussion forums. These forums were called Water Coolers. The forums had discussion topics related to sports, politics, news, and current events. Each year, the Pioneer Planet – the online section of the Pioneer Press – opened a discussion forum as a media for hunters to discuss the clues for the Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt.

During the earlier years, one might find a few hundred posts during the hunt. As more hunters had computers, those numbers jumped. From 1997 to 1998, the number of posts increased from the hundreds to the 5-digit thousands. It was during the 1998 hunt the Cooler Crew was born.

The community spirit and teamwork displayed in the Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt thread was inspiring. The group of hunters found themselves at the end of a hunt not wanting to let go of new friendships and the camaraderie found on the Water Cooler board. The idea emerged to do what anyone would do in the middle of winter in Minnesota. A picnic in Cherokee was planned - the first Rehash Bash!
