The treasure chest was found in a clump of roots above ground. Clue explanations for all the clues will follow when possible.

Clue 1

Published on Jan. 27, 1957

Hidden in Boreas' vast domain,
Lies his treasure chest,
There are trees nearby and if you're spry,
These clues will solve your quest.

Clue 2

Published on Jan. 28. 1957

We remind you hunters again this year,
From private property you must stay clear.
Don't dig up all the ground in sight.
There's another clue coming out tonight.

Clue 3

Published on Jan. 28. 1957

You must see water to win the dough
It's probably frozen and covered with snow.
It takes hard work to find the loot,
So leave your house and join the pursuit.

Our Thoughts: A reference to the Battle Creek Workhouse.

Clue 4

Published on Jan. 29, 1957

There are roads around but not right there,
You'll have to walk to reach the lair.
Exercise is good for you,
With all that money in your view.

Clue 5

Published on Jan. 29, 1957

A structure of metal, while out of view,
Lies to the north, and that's a clue.
It seems a crime to fade away,
But that is all you get today.

Clue 6

Published on Jan. 30, 1957

If you really want to win the kitty,
Look on land owned by the city.
And if you want another clue,
There's a fence between the structure and you.

Our Thoughts: Kitty refers to the old English word for jail.

Clue 7

Published on Jan. 30, 1957

If the water curves you're getting hot.
You could be standing at the spot.
Two dead trees should be in view.
We hope this is of help to you.

Our Thoughts: Curves - river or creek. Dead trees - treasure was found in the roots.

Clue 8

Published on Jan. 31, 1957

There are birds around in the summertime
But food won't grow in this cold climate.
It's deserted now but soon will be
A place of great activity.

Our Thoughts: Refers to jailbirds growing food.

Clue 9

A cylindrical object colored tan,
Makes life convenient for urban man.
And from the fence above the chest,
It and be seen but not to the west.

Our Thoughts: Battle Creek water tower.

Clue 10

The closest road has no name,
But it's snowfree just the same.
Two or three hundred yards away,
Is what you're looking for today.

Clue 11

Lexington and Bunker Hill
Were famous names and they are still.
Of curving water don't be wary,
Isn't this clue revolutionary?

Our Thoughts: Yet another reference to Battle Creek, but this clue serves as a sort of precursor for 1997's fifth clue. The park was different, but calling on the Battle of Lexington applies to both clues.

Clue 12

St. Paul, of course, is the city you seek,
The water referred to before is a creek.
Steep banks on either side arise.
Be careful climbing down to the prize.

Our Thoughts: Gives a general sense of where to look in the enormous park.

Clue 13

Robin Hood once to a land gave fame,
And according to record this name was the same.
But 30 years later it's not that way.
Can you find this piece today?

Our Thoughts: Original platting of the workhouse farm property was in the name of "Sherwood."

During the 1990’s, the St Paul Pioneer Press opened online discussion forums. These forums were called Water Coolers. The forums had discussion topics related to sports, politics, news, and current events. Each year, the Pioneer Planet – the online section of the Pioneer Press – opened a discussion forum as a media for hunters to discuss the clues for the Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt.

During the earlier years, one might find a few hundred posts during the hunt. As more hunters had computers, those numbers jumped. From 1997 to 1998, the number of posts increased from the hundreds to the 5-digit thousands. It was during the 1998 hunt the Cooler Crew was born.

The community spirit and teamwork displayed in the Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt thread was inspiring. The group of hunters found themselves at the end of a hunt not wanting to let go of new friendships and the camaraderie found on the Water Cooler board. The idea emerged to do what anyone would do in the middle of winter in Minnesota. A picnic in Cherokee was planned - the first Rehash Bash!
