there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual

I think i heard Feb 3rd is the date for it
Stay tuned. I'm thinking this Sunday -noonish at Merriam Park - but need some verification of this from others. At least the weather will be nice.
Mr. News - since this thing is over and i don't have to look at your name anymore i just want you to know that you are the biggest waste of time and your comments are absolutely stupid as hell. Next year if you come in here to be a dumbass, at least think of some funny things to say instead of
I am mr. news....I have a joe...
Get a life you loser.
To everyone else....see you all next year.
The rehash bash was scheduled for the 3rd of February, but due to the medallion being found already, it may be moved up to this Sunday possibly.
YEah Violent but Terry said it might get moved to this weekend instead now since it was found so early..
what bar? im there!
Man, I've got babysitters lined up next weekend.
How about McGovern's tonite? Then the circle will be complete
The deal is...pot luck...in Merriam Park...and I think this Sunday is a good idea. Let's burn those clues!
hey I'LL BE THERE
THIS IS MY BOARD, I'LL BE THERE
SAW EVERYONE AT THE P.P BUILING LAST NIGHT
Man now what am I to do tonight....or this weekend for that matter I had it all lined up to go out and hunt....now I am just lost...I guess my medallion fever is coming to a screetching halt.....
THIS IS MY BOARD, I'LL BE THERE
I'd like that.
I AM MR NEWS
Damn!!! Miss Cleo was wrong again.
...Im gonna miss it if its this Sunday!..i have a previous engagement!
Dang! I drove by Merriam yesterday, and it just looked sooooo small. I didn't even get out of my car! (V-8 slap in head)
Terry so are we for sure this weekend? Or do I need to check back again later???
I bet the P P is pissed. now who is going to show up at there big week-end paper-pass-out events.
HEY,MR NEWS GET A LIFE AND GET THE ( BLANK) OUT OF HERE! YOU ARE THE MOST SELF CENTERED EGOTISTICAL MANIAC!
WHAT THE HELL, I HAD TO HAVE WALKED OVER IT ABOUT 20 TIMES LAST NIGHT. THEN A LITTLE MOMMY FINDS IT IN THE DAYLIGHT. I WAS THERE LAST NIGHT AT 1 AND THERE WERE ONLY ABOUT 3 OTHER PEOPLE. THAT IS SOOOOO DUMB!
Hey Disneyplush, PP should be happy! They get to keep $5000, since they didn't have a button. That should make up for a few papers...
darn darn darn....if only i didn't hvae to go to classes this morning! I stopped at Merriam after them and then heard the news ÒÓ
Check back here! I'm only going on what I think might be the concensus being it was found so early. I know last year, there was talk that we should have had it the prior week because of the early find.
Mcgoverns/? wheres that?
Formerly there was a lot of people there when I was there last night....ugh just makes me sick to have someone find it on the 6th clue..
McGoverns = 7th by the hospital
I was there last night a little before one, didnt even feel the need to start digging yet
ok Terry thanks for the info...I will check back later tonight...hope to see you all there...
Well I guess they were wrong on clue #6
"not any fool" can find it
well it sure looks like the case to me.
I'd have to say this was the most unsatisfying hunt ever. Last year comes in second, and the year before that third. At least with Como in 97 and other years we were confident in the meanings of the clues, and it was just a matter of narrowing it down and putting in some perspiration. Even now, looking at the clues, I don't really see much that makes me go, "Oh! Merriam!" Sheesh!
now the city of St. Paul falls into a depression until next November when all the hipe will form again!.... At least this year there is a cheaper brand of prozac out there...LOL
go green -
NO DOUBT!! This year's clues didn't tell us a damn thing...these clues could have fit any park.
THis new clue writer is dumb as hell. Can't even write good clues. What pisses me off is I was one of the few people there last night. I looked! F*** why did I have classes this morning!!!!
Everyone, dont worry, first you get sad, then madd... then you deal with it.. just like a breakup. Give it time we will all be fine.. (I know Im a smart ass) Well Ill see everyone next yr!! You all take care!
So do we have a picture yt of the person that found it? Or her "story"?
dammit all! anyone know who found it? was it a coolerhead?
The silver lining here is that we will not have to deal with MR. SNEWS any more!!! :-)
This is all we know:
Woodbury woman, son find Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion A Woodbury woman and her 16-year-old son found the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion this morning. Mary Kay Hamilton and son Sean located it just after 11 a.m. attached to part of a potato chip container in Merriam Park, between some baseball fields.
The duo will be awarded a $5,000 prize, plus $1,200 in groceries from Cub Foods. They would have been awarded an additional $5,000 if they had a registered Winter Carnival button. They said it is the first year they haven't bought one.
Pioneer Press Publisher Harold Higgins will introduce the winner and award prizes at a news conference at 2 p.m. today at the Pioneer Press’ downtown St. Paul headquarters at 345 Cedar Street. Cub Foods also will honor the winner.
It was supposedly some lady with her 16 year old kid, and no button.
Ares - NO some damn woman and her son WITH NO BUTTON!!!
Bummer, eh Sethmon... I was within 20 yards of the thing yesterday.. I cleaned out under the bleachers there. I thought the leaves would be a good hiding spot...
well then definitely not a coolerhead :)
POTATO CHIP CONTAINER????
Where is that in the clues?
Let the chips fall where they may - it's in a later clue.
I would toss the pot. chip cont. in the trash...that was NOT in the clues!!!!
Disney
Nothing is trash during the hunt.
Step: maybe about clue 9? (PC container)
maybe it was a home made, knitted chip container...heh.
When I got ther I liked the bound of dirt at the corner of the field. I was leaving to get my shovel when I heard about it.
The Five Stages of Grief:
The first stage is denial
Upon hearing the news, the digger reacts with a shocked, "No, not me."
Next comes anger or resentment
"Why not me?" is the question asked now. This outcry should be accepted, unjudged.
The third stage is bargaining
"Yes but, maybe there should be another one."
The fourth stage is depression
Now the person says, "Yes, it wasn't me," with the courage to admit that it is happening; this acknowledgment brings depression.
Finally comes acceptance
A time of facing the end calmly.
true true...even diapers in past years..YUCK
Until next year. I'm Audi ô-ô
ter, is there a place at merriam where we can burn the clues at? and how about an effigy of mr news and mebbe the clue writer too!
I am so depressed I could die. I didn't even get out to get the paper yet this year!
The Medallion they found was just declared a forgery! Keep lookin!
(Just wishful thinkin)
The Medallion they found was just declared a forgery! Keep lookin!
(Just wishful thinkin)
how do you know what the later clues are ???
I will not accept that the thing has been found. No way.
Im outtie for now...imma go get drunk. Ill be back on here later yall.
or maybe 8 or 10.
I don't know if there's a fire ring out there or not...but maybe we could use a grill and some of the rough diamond bits of coal to help light that fire!
I think this clue writer leaked information to his wife and kid...this sucks. I am so pissed off...Maybe i will just drink my sorrows away.
ooh. now there's an idea.
I'll join you!
Step: You send a check to the PP and they give you all the clues on the first day.
I think "in the rough" referred to the outfeild, or the grass between the diamonds
Click the clue site link at the top of this page, all 12 clues are posted now. Or use this...

I wanna cry. I was going to go right after work. BLEAH. they didn't even have a friggin button.
They have the remaining clues here:

All clues released at clue page. www2.pionerrplanet/wintercarnival/archive.cfm
I don't think that the medallion is actually hidden until the fifth or sixth clue. There was one year that someone accidentally came across if after like the second or third clue, and they don't want that happening again. The year that it was found at Conway Park (1999, by some of our friends....darn it), we had the entire park completely turned upside down. They said that it was in the "one tiny strip of untouched snow left in the park". Yeah, right. With hundreds of people around, someone was bound to come across it before that!!
Well, our weekend is shot too. We were planning to hunt with the kids (since it is going to be so nice out), but I guess we'll be doing something else!! See you all next year on the board. Thanks for all your input. And for those of you who were set on Mounds Park.......there's always next year!!!!!!!!!!
ATTENTION ARES.....AND EVERYONE ELSE. I SAY WE MAKE A PETITION TO HAVE A SECOND HUNT FOR THE REST OF THE 5000 DOLLARS. WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE? IM JUST SO SADDENED BY THIS. LAST NIGHT I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELDS. WHERE THE CENTER FIELDS COMBINE. THAT'S WHERE WILLIE MAYS PLAYED.
wow. i can noodle out clue 10.
FOR SALE: One Registered Winter Carnival Button. Asking $2500. Have the medallion and no button? Contact me ASAP!
clue ten sucks. what the heck.
I am so sad that the treasure has been found. I had a wonderful searching weekend planned. Now I will have to get my chores finished instead. :(
OK, what's with all the fire references? Spark and scorch
clue 10's a gimme for the school.
I don't think you should get SHIT if you don't have a button. that just absolutely irates me.
I think we've been scorched!
I am so sad that the treasure has been found. I had a wonderful searching weekend planned. Now I will have to get my chores finished instead. :(
OK, what's with all the fire references? Spark and scorch
cuz its what we'll do to the cluewriter for doing this to us! hmm. i must be moving into the second stage of denial!
Where is the reference to potato(e) chip?
Hello everyone, sorry its over so fast! I was at newell today and thought I had it for sure
It's OK Ares. We're here for you. Let your grief out.
this one went down faster than newell did.
no doubt...there's nothing about chips!!! See, this is a conspiracy....
no, frosti. i can't say the word that's on my mind. kids read this board you know :)
SEE ITS PEOPLE LIKE THAT, THE PEOPLE WHO JUST DECIDE TO GO ONE MORNING AND JUST TAKE A LOOK. GOD THAT IS SUCH BULLSHIT! IM SO DEPRESSED RIGHT NOW. I HAD THE WHOLE WEEKEND PLANNED. I WANTED CLUE 7 SO BAD. F*** ME!
AGHHHH I was right there frome midnight to one i'll never stop digging agane!!!!
Wahhhh! I guess a 50 degree hunting weekend is not in my future...
and as for ma posting the clues. i don't want the clues. i want an explanation!
Clue #10 must be describing the shape of the chip container- pringles short can or cap
I'm thinking it's gonna take 13-14 clues for me...
can i interest you in a 6 clue hunt, dd? thank god for next year.
why don't the clues have explanations attached....I want to see where there is a chip reference.
Maybe a 50 degree rehash bash on Sunday. Stay tuned!
well...the garage logic think tank will now resign ourselves to the garage and drink some summit winter ale and eat bratwurst.. see i told you it wasnt at midway...maybe we will winter tailgate there
Boo. This year was no fun. The winter carnival didn't even start before they found the treasure. This should last until the 10th and 11th clues. Who writes the clues anyway. They need to be tougher people. We need a weekend thing to do. Now everything rued. Thanks.
step, since you're not in st cloud anymore, gonna be at the rehash?
At least it wasn't at freaking Como
So I know it's been found. My husband was there but no where does it say by whom and how do you know they didn't have a button? Why isn't here on the top of the board?
mARA WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THIS CLUE?
td: http://www2.pioneerplanet.com/wintercarnival/
For the thousandth time... I don't understand why clues about what the thing is hidden in are of any significance. You are going to examine anything found on the ground.
go to the top of the page for clue posting site clue #10 says "puck"
I Heard it on the radio
:(
well, it was there, td. or at least i thought it was.
:(
:(
:(
:(
:( That's all I want to say.
No mention of the "non button registration" though. Still sadness bestills my heart and shovel. Just bought new boots last night just for digging tonight and this weekend.
Look in the breaking news section of the pioneer press website. Click on the link saying "the medallion has been found". It gives the names of the people who found it, where they are from, where they found it, etc..... What else is there????????
td, i wanna say more, but like i said. children occasionally read this board.
Goodbye -- Next year! Maybe minneapolis will start having a hunt!
Clue 10 I think refers to Wadsworth, which refers to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, of which I think there is Longfellow School next to the park.
It's a forgery.
bingo, kids.
This is bad! We were moving snow 3 days in a row at Merriam. I guess Disney has to wait until next year! And what is with no button!!!! Pleaaaaase!! No snow is not the way to go for this. No snow = no fun!!
Mom PP should do something for us. I don't know what but for this to be over BEFORE the carnival even begins is not acceptable. That's my humble opinion. :(
This is becoming a joke the clue writer once again is a fool
A fake. Keep looking.
can't believe it - i pulled the kids right over second base last night...this sucks
No fake, but kinda wish it was.
Expect more news soon. The winner is going to be presented at a press conference in 15 minutes, 2:00 central.
I wish it were a fake!! I could have used that money for Vegas in March. Now I'll actually have to save my own!!
This year the clues had us all over the city. Getting to the right park is always a winning feeling - even if you don't get lucky enough to find it.
This year goes down in my books as one that found me NOT at the right park. That's one in the lost column. aahhhhhhhhhhhh
treasure, you're exactly right! the carnival runs for 10 days, the hunt should be on all 10 of those days. and maybe a couple days before.
Treasure digger you are right on the money it's over before it even began. PP sucks! winter carnival is a big joke this year. The clue writer is an idiot!
You have personally authenticated the medal, TD? All right then.
alright who got it lets gettem
human, the press wouldn't have given away all the clues already if it wasn't authenticated.
It must be a really good fake.
The Pioneer Press has confirmed a winner in its annual Treasure Hunt, presented by Cub Foods. The medallion was found at St. Paul's Merriam Park just after 11 a.m. today.
The winners pictures are on the front of the paper now
What is the quickest it has been found?
I zipped over to PP afternoon edition. They definitely did NOT have a button. Said it was their FIRST year of not buying one. I feel very sorry for them that them didn't. NOT! I was hoping Allison found it or one of you guys because a few of you guys were heading out there. Again, sadness.
i'm in denial.
Before the hunt started one year. DOn't recall the year though.
Can someone explain clue #9 to me!
I think the year it was at Mears - like after the 3rd clue. I think it was found more by accident that year.
This was way worst than Newell in my history book. My boots didn't even get a chance to get dirty. That's it. I'm sleeping in my boots with my shovel in hand.
PP this is so unfair. I only got to dig one night (made me late for work this morning, but still). I prefer the years when we look until at least the 10th or 11th clue. I guess there is nothing left to do but wait for next year and hope for more snow!
im so sad people shouldnt be able to play with no reg. button
sorry med hunter, its a mystery to me too.
Mr. Med: Do not dig under any 'X'.
i'm so bummed
I just want to say "I love you guys" - sorry felt a group hug coming on.
Talked to the finder . IT HAS BEEN FOUND!!!!
Pictures on my site shortly of were and who!
We all need to wrap our arms around ourselves. On the count of three.
want to cry!
I can't find anything in my records less than 5 clues. That happened twice while there were 2 clues per day, which means it was only the third day of the hunt.
1
2
thanks td. back atcha!
3
Okay, we can stop hugging.
what a waste! the clues sucked
"x" marks the spot was in a laundry detergent commercial long ago, was it tide? was medallion in detergent box?
Well, I guess I should be a good hunter and say "Congratulations Mary Kay Hamilton and Sean for finding the medallion."
TD has moved on to stage 5.
No attached to a potato chip bag or container.
That's the spirit...
Congratulations to the finders! Some year...if it takes another 30 years, it will be me!
Thanks, MMH!! I needed that.
the only thing x-wise i can think of is that the baselines from 1st to 2nd and from second to third intersect at second base. since its winter, the chalk wouldn't be on the field for the lines, so the x isn't really there. the puck was allegedly near by. or so clue 12 says.
Now, how can you help me get there?
med: and here i was going to call you and try to hook up with you and the kids this weekend (your old neighbor)
Well, let me see, MMH. We now hav 365 days - less than 365 - to prepare for next year. We'll be wiser and more determined.
The good thing about this hunt was that the clues were vague enough to keep people hunting all over the place. I believe if there had been snow - and no one here can control that - the hunt would have lasted a few more clues.
Nice name there old neighbor
maybe i should change my name to cantnoodle4beans!
explanations are now posted on the pp site.
definitely, terry. i was out scouting from mounds out to bc at lunch. the snow's gone, there's no cover there.
I think we did a good job here discussing the clues. Maybe everyone's discussion helped Mary and Sean find it. Who knows? But, I think I might just go to Merriam tonight or definitely tomorrow for sure just to pout!!!
next year i.m hopeing for winter weather. keep some of the sunshine hunters home.
Anyone else thinking of doing that?
wait till sunday, treasure.
I think the going to Merriam to pout will be done at the Re-hash bash, possibly this Sunday.
Sure, the explanations totally clear this up now. Dah?
Marry 'em? Good grief!
oh yeah. right away, td.
did I miss something or what- I read the explanations- which totally suck- and still don't see anything about potato chips!!
I'm with you LL!
good question, leah. good question.
These clues don't even lead us anywhere until Clue 8. My hat is definitely off to Allison and who ever else was at Merriam before today.
Anyone got the number for the "Over Thinkers Anonymous" club?
My husband was at BC yesterday and last night. And he was at Merriam this morning but too late. Dang it!!
MMH, if you get it, please post it. I think there will be a lot of us needing it.
Can someone please check on Green and Jake?
They're probably down at PP because of the press conference happening at 2 PM - which is going on now.
well not that's it's over I guess I can go into labor and not be mad about it- I was doing everything in my power not to let myself have this baby until the hunt ended
I called Jake just after hearing the news. He was going to get to Trent and so I'm sure they've been down to the PP for the news conference.
Time to cry and tonight I was planning on going down to the pp for the first time. and yesterday me and my sister were thinking about going to merriam and just stayed at como and then went home....
LL - if you have a girl, please call her medallion.
See, the things us true hunters give up. Good job, LL?
Hi everyone. Just got back from Merriam. It's a sad, sad day.
I called Green after I found out, and she sounded disappointed/depressed. They know, they are there.
Bummer, huh dal? Did you see it?
I am having a girl- but I don't think that I am that crazy about the hunt
Me tinks it's a "TIME TO KILL" - does that sound familiar to anyone?
Me also tinks a NEW writer of the clues is a MUST for next year?
Where do we find out who wrote the clues? Any ideas Jake?
I'm out of here - hope to see you all on sunday.
Nobody knows who writes the clues but Mom PP.
...and here I am working just a couple of miles away....
Hi TMK! Thanks for introducing me around last night! You really made this newby feel welcome. And, hello again to all you heads I met last night -- Randy, Downtown Dave, Santa Dave, Allison, Me2, scribe, leelabell, and of course, Green. I know I'm forgetting some, but I'll see ya at the Bash.
Ok, Ok, Ok...set aside the fact that Im extremely bummed that this thing was already found (on clue 6) none the less, making it an earlier find than in any recent history which completely blows chunks...but newspaper, clue writer anyone in charge of this program....come the "F" on....those were the absolute most crappy clues ever...nowhere in the 12 clues was the object the medallion was attached to mentioned...you also have taken all puzzle solving and fun out of even bothering to search for the treasure because the clues blatantly stated everything that they meant. How about a little puzzler next year? How about something interesting that makes all of this work worthwhile? Look through all of the above posts and all of the work that people put into the possible different meanings of the clues...and take heart that that's what treasure hunter's want. If these clues are gonna be so obvious...hell, Ill just pick up a shovel at clue 6 next year and go where everyone knows it to be...I wont bother looking until then. Whoever wrote clues for the last time it was at Cherokee knows how to do it (and if that happens to be the same person...boy have you lost it).... This is truly a sad day in clue-land...take care all....Ill see you in the "popular park" on clue six next year...
-An angered by the lameness, ShovelMaster
I got there about 1 hour after it was found. Allison and MacGroveMan (aka Carl) and some others were there. Several spots were dug around the baseball field (including the infield by us last night!), but no one knew exactly where it was, not even Green and her camera crew, who showed up later.
Green was VERY bummed.

No problem My Dalliance. I know it was kind of strange and hard for me to meet people for the first time. I've tried to help some others get acclimated. Any other Cooler Crew newbies or lurkers out there, I do encourage you all to come out to the re-hash bash. It's a lot more fun knowing people in person from here, and I think will be helpful for future hunts. I'll introduce you to people myself if need be (Not that the other Cooler Heads aren't approachable themselves, by any means. They are all really nice and friendly!)

Hi to Frosty and runningchick, too! I forgot to mention I met you. Hope you both can make it to the bash. I'll know you by your own little "echoes."
i'm surprised we haven't heard from mr. news to rub it in!
Just got home from merriam too, saw green and allison (who was there before and when it was found). This was the coolest thing I've done in a long time. I am so sad it's over, and I want to thank everyone for taking on this newbie. I want to be an OFFICIAL cooler crew girl next year- and the year after that..and after that.

I agree with shovelman. There was no depth to the clues at all.
I had to be raking snow within 10 ft. of it last night
Email the pp tell them they suck! you know the editor or whoever is pissed off they would have sold thousands of extra sunday papers, they need to announce another hunt for the other 5,000.
Well.. I might as well pitch my tent to go wait for "Attack of the clones"
NOTE TO SELF: Remind Scribe to bring the rubber chicken to the re-hash bash....
There is no "official" ness about being a Cooler Crew member! Anyone who lurks, posts, noodles, whatever is a member!

Hi lil slim! Darn it! I forgot to mention the two most important people I met last night! Lil Slim and Lisa's Mommy. It must be because I feel like I've known you longer. You guys rock!!!! What do you say we do it again next year?
well that's good, cause i will definately be at rehash (do we bring the kids?) what about food or anything?
