Yes, the medallion has been found, but
there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual
discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park
in St. Paul.
clues and explanations ![]()
My first stop will be Ruminator
all the clues so far could indicate nearly every park in St.Paul
Como Como Como!!!!!!
BC isn't a "St. Paul Park" it is a Ramsey Co. park. In the past, when it has been at BC the clues have stated it is in Ramsey County - not specifically at a "St. Paul Park". I liked BC alot until I thought about this.
Why do I feel stupid I don't think I have ever seen her name before. I will be sure to find her at the Bash though as long as it isn't found at C*M* (I can't even bring myself to say the name)
Good morning all hows the narrowing down going
Sister...
St. Paul Parks and Rec is in charge of the rec center area and perhaps more as well
Meeting up at 11:00, and then I've got to do a drive-by. I'll be in the truck and there's only room for one, and that spot's taken for awhile.
Then, I don't know what will happen. Things are heating up and the schedule can literally change from one second to the next. There are not more quarantees. We go where the action is.
NO como! I am still on my small obscure park rant. Nobody seems to like that one 'cept Ares. Why is that?
Anyone notice clue 6 , first line starts with B ,last linn starts with C. way to show BC
Sister- all the signs at BC say- St.Paul park and Rec center
Yes...only room for one! :-)
Mac, you're a smart man. The bible o'this religion...
I think the clues will remain vague until the weekend promo hoopla is over...after all, why would these sponsors want to be there after the medallion is found?
Hey, hey. Gonna get warm today.
I like it....So if nobody else likes it then its them who won't be walking away with 10,000
how do como and rec fit
((((Lisa))) I am glad we hooked up. They will all be jealous of our $10K at the rehash bash!
Estaban! Mac's off to Ruminator to purchase the bible o'this here religion o'ours! :D
TTHG...I'm gonna breakdown and buy the book today at Ruminator!!! Green is makin me do it!
Estaban, you can give me my cut when we meet up... LOL!!! I'm joking, Mac!
I need to but that book too- where is Ruminator? I know its off Grand- Grand and What?????????????
only thing is we have to share with Dal cuz she has the button :-)
Old Mac-Grove guy. I'm headin that way right now. You want to link up?
Danielle - any ideas on how today's clue fits BC? After your info, BC is definitely a possibility for me.
I've got to get underwater, you guys.
Will be toing and froing...
Grand just west of Snelling by Macalaster College!
I guess if they hide it in a piece of coal or something that would hide it even if the snow melts it could be a small park and they have done a good job of keeping people spread out.
And suppose the clue writer purposely wrote the clues to NOT include any info in the bible? (I have one, too)
Would Love to TTHG...whats your schedule
Thass possible, Matt. Thass possible.
Yes. Yes.
TTHG how long did it take you to put that book together? I caught my first look at it last night and now I have to go buy one...
Sisiter- i was saying earlier that maybe its hidden in a Match box that is buried in the sand? I don't see why it couldn't be burried- I don't think that is destroying. The sand where kids play- ya know how its under the swings and slides? what do you think?
I care slim, I just don't have anything to offer on that theory. Too many small obscure parks that I don't know of. I'm also happily in denial and still thinking about Phalen. ;-p
You're probably correct Matt. Thats why we have to come out with a secret version of the book.
Grand and Cambridge, abt 3 blocks west of snelling
yeah, that's what I'm sayin,it wouldn't be in the bible (i.e. the fool clue). Lisa, I already know that! I am all for this team thing!!!
you got it, matt. any old fool around these parts is gonna have a guide. i said it earlier. there's a lot of parks that steve touched on that don't have maps and such in the guide. my money's on one of those. and if you didn't slog, steve, we need maps of those for next year's edition! :)
Thanks- Matt!
Actually...Its ONE REALLY LONG BLOCK West of Snelling!
TTHG...What time???
Slim the only thing I don't like about your idea is I think there needs to be a fire pit or grills at the park its at....light a spark and Diamond in the rough...I'm thinking its buried in the pit someplace...
I'll be back in 15- its break time!!
Danielle, the book says it's never buried in the dirt, however, it could be frozen in a clump(the Diamond in the rough) That's been done a few times
Danielle - I don't see why they couldn't bury it in sand either. I don't see how digging can destroy sand - that's what it is for!!! Besides, todays clue says it is going to be tough and they know there isn't going to be much snow by the time it is found.
I don't think it is in a piece of coal like someone said earlier. Diamonds don't actually come from coal.
Where u people think the med is at???????????
Daniell...a break from what...work??? LOL
zzzzzz huh? oh my boss just woke me up! lil slim's friend
great, now I am thinking about leaving work early... EVIL!
TTHG...U Still Here???
hear ya lisa, we are going soon to re-scope, and i will let you know what i think after seeing it in daylight!
Diamond in the rough would be a diamond hidden in a piece of coal....
Ever seen Aladdin? Aladdin was a poor man but was as great as royalty he was a diamond in the rough...does that make sense?
Took me four years. Carl, I'm heading that way now...e-mail me your phone #. That goes for anyone else, too. I'm shuttin down the computer in 10 minutes, so if you want to have a little gathering in a half hour...send me an e-mail.
I like the fire pit and grill idea better get out and do some hunting.
come on Soelo...we could meet...you are my friend, you want to leave work...hypnotizing you....
Steve I need to pick up another book where are you going to be at tonight?
not with out me it was my idea Robert!! :-) Don't leave me here alone!
lmao
Does anyone know where the Park n Rec headquarters is? Is it in or near a park?
TTHG...What is your e-mail???
TTHG, If you are the author, I was wondering if you ice-fish, and perhaps you once bought minnows from my store in s.mpls?
there are grills at phalen lisa...and a beach. hmmmmm.
Oops...jsrworth@aol.
Slim is Soelo your friend from last night? Or a different one?
lisa's mommy what park do you think it's in. are you at work??
last night lisa
no that's just evil! as far as using your brain OR your legs, that's not quite how it was:
You may knit your brows on this one Or just trek up and down every hill Work your brain, your legs, it will be fun If you have some time to kill
it says either knit your brows OR trek and work your brain, your legs (using a comma instead of "and" like they do in headlines)
Well I'm working till hubby gets home (watching my daughter) I'm for a couple parks still...Phalen is dropping down fast but still there, Mounds, and Rice are my top 3 right now...
AARRGGHH! My e-mail is shut down til Tues!
TTHG...You have mail!!!
we know, soelo, but we are stretching. Big slim and i are heading out around noon. you sure you aren't game for ditching the office?
TTHG, please to answer my fishing?
I guess i'm thinking of como as much as i don't want to because it's so big. are there grills or firpit at merriam???
Packer 69
The Saint Paul Park and Rec Headquarters is located at Como Park.
I don't think there is a fire pit a Merriam however I forgot to add that one to my list I saw something else ther that would fit my spark theory
This has been a treasure mind screw more than a hunt
Hello Lisa and Friends. Gosh sound's like kids cartoon or bad movie..lol I am thinking it is not in park at all it is in my back yard..
morning all
I gotta go, "time to make the doughnuts"
Well Slim I'm gunna get going so rememeber to call me with any new developments!! IF it gets really really nice I might take my daughter out with me but it has to get really nice....don't want her cold getting worse
Does anyone know if the Gates at Phalen were open last night?
I guess como and merriam are my two parks for today and tonights clue will possibly change that I have only hunted once at night but may have to go tonight. maybe I should go to the pp also.
ttyl lisa
Yeah- i am at work!!! he he
Dave it can't be in your back yard cuz I don't know where you live and I am going to be finding it....
there was a lot at mom press last night, robert, and im sure more tonight. it's cool to put faces to names.
what ime do most show up? it will be fun to meet some of the noodlers!!!
Gates at Phalen were closed. But, there's a parking lot on the north end by the boat launch that's open (use your legs)
10 or so. we were there but stayed warm in the car till bout 1030
frosti, are you headin out today?
I thought about como the first and second clue and gave that up. But could be tip could be place in park can see space needle. mcmurry feild has baseball dimond could be the making the clues so we go nuts as it maybe in nut goodie wraper
great Thanks all see ya tonight and GOOD LUCK!!!!
soelo, the anagram was right! it was the only anagram that came up on wordsmith..hmmmm
Thanks Frosti
Well, one thing is for sure, the new clue writer was hired to make the hunt last longer than 8 clues. It is quite clear from the language that they want to leave everything a bit vague so that we are unsure. I would say that, so far, it semes to be working. I hate to continually say/read/ think this, but I bet tonights clue will help us in narrowing down the park.
Anyway, sadly, I have to leave now for the weekend, I will be back Sunday, hopefully, it will still be out there!!
So, a Jewell Drive goes right into Colby Lake Park; does anyone have any infor on that park?
I lisa the woods there talking about I think means stay away from the woods like is said so stay away from woodbury and maplewood
What park sounds the best?
ssp, that's in woodbury, which is in washington county.
slim-what is the anagram?
I like Merriam, Como (icky), Crosby, Mounds.
Does anyone think Highland is TOTALLY ruled out? There is that circus there to AMUSE children.. it's a Circus with kid performers....
just thinking. -e
Lisa your at home I know and I dint dig up my yard .. so coo newel spelled wrong
any reason clue five doesn't follw the normal rhyming pattern? ie most are ABAB but clue 5 is only ABCB
Thanks, Ares
Class of 69-- Colby lake is in the heart of Woodbury.
soelo, clue 5's pattern was aabccb. you can usually write off a change in the rhyme pattern midhunt. its usually meaningless.
Slim, I spent two hours of work time following your train of thought. I like it. I was forcing a small park to fit the other day too. It may be the same one as you. I didn't get your anagram thing yet, though. Is a school nearby?
slim, I'm working today, and have my kids to watch over tonight. I'll probably wait and head down to pp again tonight. I think tonight's clue will finally have some meat in it. I might send runningchick to pp instead. Me so tired.
slim...I couldn't leave :-) what anagram?
good to see you Ian. You interested in my red eye noodling? i found a tiny park. one small hill from the parking lot, a baseball field. no woods, but wood-named street, a tiny tot lot (like for toddlers, fenced in) a rec center with a flag on top (hunter's pride) in view of the KSTP tower. Two streets anagrammed in clue 4. Also, it's not in THG- (any old fool would not find it there) no one seems to like the idea of a small neighborhood park though.
So what about this "take your wreck", could it be a car impound lot or junk yard? Doesn't the Park n Rec have a warehouse across the street from a section of Como where they service vehicals? Or is this reallly stretching things?
forcast for next week is icky live to enjoy the weekend ..
U people always say the next clue will mean something. it probaly wont
Salvage yard, two blocks away..and a library one block south.
lisa said some thing about wrecked last nite think and thought of newell park there are junk yards on that street
Is this the best you guys can come up with
what park was it lil' slim
Flower-de-Luce Palingenesis The Bridge of Cloud Hawthorne Christmas Bells The Wind over the Chimney The Bells of Lynn Killed at the Ford Giotto's Tower To-morrow Divina Commedia Noel These are all poems by Longfellow isn't Merriam by Longfellow Elementary school? and i know B.C. Has a Longfellow Street very near it. Cummon now I need feedback
I want Ares top 3 list
Jim casper- you are right about having a longfellow street near BC
Dave don't go spreding the word that I was helping you fit Newell in!!! I also said I don't think its the park :-) I also said that the year it was found there HA HA HA HA
nuttie clue's
"Killed at Ford" ????/
am going to shoot myself down (or find the prize) this morning mk, only then can i reveal the culmination of my noodling
Slim, are you looking in the "flowers"?
fox- near there, yup.
Hey guys whats for breakfast I'm hungry....
RUN FAST, RUN HARD, STAY FOCUSED AND ON THE TRACK AS YOU CHASE YOUR DREAM......THEN RETIRE TO A NICE WARM COUCH......
Besides on/in air, anyone notice the streets A, B, and C may also stand for At Battle Creek? I am still strong on this site.
However, Diamond in the Rough also stands for something that has nothing to do with baseball or jewels or a match box brand.....Unfortunately I just cannot yet spit that out of my brain.....I am thinking it is a song by a popular singer- perhaps from the 70-80's..........perhaps even Elton John or Berry Manlow...........EEEKKKKKKKk!! Can anyone HELP???!!!
Well I know I was not thing of newell till you talked about it. so thanks I did have in down to 65 parks not any more now up to 66 lol
a few blocks further southwest from the tree elf, fox.

Neil Diamond.....?
OK I'm lost and have been lost on the whole A,B, and C street thing whats up with that
Ok well I think you mentioned Newell and got me thinking about it...But either way don't go spreading the word :-)
dimond in rough is some thing that is being rebuilt or maybe old ugly house some one takes and fixes. charlie browns xmas tree. dont know of a song like that?
greyhound just simmer down
For someone who asked earlier, yes, Merriam is by Longfellow elementary.
you got me fox?
Spring/is in the air. And Love/ is in the air...
Slim, would you say that you are looking along a "happy area"? (I can't find any "gnome" reference on my maps)
So lisa are you leaving to look at newell when hubby gets home? And dont be so quick to cut down your idea's it could be found there. I still like como and mounds.
Good Morning Crew!
Got the day off. Was planning on doing some digging, but I've not narrowed the park down enough yet to actually dig or rake or whatever. Instead I'll be trying to get this house in reasonable order and then head out this afternoon to do some scouting around at a few spots.
I believe this last clue is the what-it's-in clue. Believing that, I would have to say it's been encased in something resembling a diamond in the rough - coal - or a rough cut diamond that would resemble something icier but still muddy.
I also believe just about any park is still in the running - including Como....but probably McMurray field if that's the case.
AW what is your top 3 list
Yesterday was Neil Diamond's birthday, if that helps anyone out.
yes fox, i know where you are looking, off the happy, in the flowers...slightly SW of there.
dave s.,
about the "diamond in the rough" being a fix up house... they are tearing down houses around Jimmy Lee
sprydoggy, i don't have a top 3 list. given the "not just any fool" in last nites clue, i'm convinced its at one of the places steve talks about in the back of the guide, but doesn't have a map of! must be 20 or so of them. and they're small enough that they would be putting off something explicitly revealing about the location.
How do I get to Merriam Park?
A, B, C St are next To BC
I will be going out probably around 1 or 2 I plan on hitting Mounds again breifly (in the daylight hours) Merriam, Phalen (maybe I will actually get out of my car today) and Rice
off the happy, in the flowers?
Merriam is my top by far. Then maybe Belvedere, just because I haven't been there yet to dismiss it. And then, maybe Indian Mounds.
Slim, I thnk we can keep reinforcing each other. Our thinking is alike. But what bugs me is I missed the anagram. Do you use a website type thing for deciphering anagrams?
delete lisa... TMI, let me get there first!
how about email fox?
Lisa's--you think Rice, huh? What about the ice sculptures? Do they let people go digging around in there? Otherwise, I'm with you on the other 3...I'm going out around 1ish to scope...it's so much easier in the daylight to check out the landmarks, etc
Where are you coming from? Merriam is a little tricky to get to. It's on 94 and Prior, but there is no Prior exit, so you may need to take Snelling or Cretin to Marshall and then take that to Prior.
delete which? Slim?
Lisa, there are 3 streets A B & C that are on the north end of BC. They are very small- you probably have to know the area or use a Hudson Street map to see them. ABC is a tv network- in the air are the street signs, on the air with the broadcasts. They are not too far from Point Douglas Rd. (point-tip- get it).
The song goes something like this........"she's just a diamond in the rough........" For some reason Elton John and the Lady Dianne tribute song is also sticking in my mind, but I just cannot remember- drat!
Well still need more I think
nothing lisa- yeah they wouldn't let us hit Rice with the snow sculptures. we better forget that one!
Also, "Diamond in the Rough" was a song written by Neil Diamond. It's also the name of an album by John Prine. And there's a song by Shawn Colvin called Diamond in the Rough. I don't think it's a cover.
Dale Jarret ya swing by my ouse and pick me up we follow my map.... Haha No No No jsut kidding I am going to head over there now I have no idea how to get there I am going to get in the car and drive till I find a park when I do find a park i will call it Merriam
I though I read something from Green about not posting telephone numbers or email (or did he say erase it right away?) I am not sure I know how to do that
I agree with Terry that this clue is talking about what it is hidden in and isn't a park clue. But if that's the case, that would probably mean that time and tide must have some real significance. It could be the Longfellow thing, but that strikes me as such a longshot way of trying to refer to the school.
GreyHoundGirl- A, B, and C, street are on the very end of White Bear Ave. They are extremely small- but it is about a block from Bc.
point douglas is up by mounds to I think ..
last night people were thinking that it would be in a Diamond box of matches
ZPoint Douglas runs right into BC, but it is next to Mounds Too- same with Burns Ave.
get it fox?
AW - I am thinking that this clue is what its in or its talking about finding a smaller park amongst the many
Well I was having some trouble with my asthma, but that seems to have subsided now, so I think I'm going to head out and do some searching in the daylight. Maybe I'll see some of you out there.
Allison is there anything leading you to believe if the park is going to be an average park or very large park.
I still kinda like that matchbox idea myself...but that may be too big of a box--maybe it's hidden in a matchbook, and hidden in yet something else--yarn (knit your brow).....
That time and tide thing has been floating around in my noodlin' noggin for a couple of days. What is it that both time and tide do? Both lead to change. Tide changes landscape and time changes all sorts of stuff...like from a different era.
That would lead me to think about what has changed in this park the medallion is hidden in...either because of water or time. Something from a different era?
Alert, Alert-just got back from Merriam, 1 spotter who was very noticeable, didn't put much effort into shoveling, was a dead give away. Interesting I think!!!
No, nothing about the size of the park. The ones I'm looking at are smaller ones, but even if it was in a big one, the way they have defined the area by the clues is going to limit it to a rather small part of that big park anyway, so I really don't see it making any difference.
Terry- How about the new water park for Tots in Bc and the time thing- Century ave, borders BC- watcha think?
I was just htinking Diamond in the rough find the smaller park or the more unknown park...I don't know just noodling...
didnt find song ..
That's actually a decent thought Terry. Will have to think about that one. I thought I saw a spotter last night at Merriam too but it could have just been someone scouting it out. Or in your case someone who just wasn't confident of where to dig.
Thats good terry what about hiilcrest knoll?
I think just about anything is possible. The deal with this year's clues thus far is that by skewing the way you think about any given clue - and often without stretching - could put you in any number of parks.
A B C Streets come off Pullman Ave.....You get on PT Douglas Rd to get to Pullman.
slim, got it.
ABC Streets are on the end of white bear- I used to live there.
Thanks Allison for your wonderful website, its been very helpful!-DJ
You were Quick at Merriam Dale?
There's some quote or saying or something that says time waits for no man. Or do I have that wrong?
I need to get out and do some thing you all take care..poof
Then there are 2 ABC Streets!
Fox Deluxe slim
Lawson and rice
Allison in the past I remember clues that would at least tell us the general location of the park in St Paul(east, west,North,South) why hasn't there been that type of clue. Is this a different clue writer?
No problem Dale. I try. And then if you don't get enough of the hunt, a few weeks after the hunt I generally run what I call the "Mock Hunt" which is my own little treasure hunt patterned after this one.
headin there now mk.
Allison Wonderlands -"Mock Hunt"
Its cool!
I think it is a different clue writer this year. The rhyme scheme has been mostly different and the poetry not as elegant. But I think thus far the clues have been better written from a puzzle point of view. If I'm right about it being in Merriam Park, I'm not sure how you would indicate that as it's not really one of the major St. Paul neighborhoods, unless you were just going to say West side.
Pictures from yesterday on my site slim
First time poster long time lurker....
AW or anyone else for that matter, what's your take on School ground's? Such as BC? My diggers were scouting the park last nite, and noticed people digging on the school grounds west side by Ruth, according to the THG this is "School Grounds" would they hide it there?
BTW the spell checker button sucks so if someone got the first post before I edit again sorry.....
got a BC question
going south on BC road, right before the Lower Afton Rd intersection there is a road going off to the right of BC road.... looks like a private drive but i think that is still a section of BC park.. anyone help?
whatcha think mk?
I don't think it would be on school grounds, unless those grounds were part of a rec center.
There is only 1 set of ABC streets- I've looked. yoou take White Bear til you get to Upper Afton, Cross Upper Afton and you are at ABC st. They are right around the corner from BC
I believe that school grounds are private property - at least owned by the school system and not the city of St. Paul's park n rec division.
Welcome Little--I think we were all lurkers at one time. Funny, I had thought of using that tagline once myself. Anyway, I don't think they'd actually put it on school grounds......just my take.
I can almost gaurentee that its a different clue writer this year a couple months ago the PP was hiring a writer and you had to submit poetry..a friend of mine that was moving up here from WI was going to apply and they wanted someone local.....I think they were looking for a clue writer!!
Its on my list !
Bug- You are correct- that is another part of Bc park- its very small and is mainly walking paths- but it is part of the park.
I can make BC fit but so can many others...
Ok, so heading out now for real. I'm sure I'll see some of you around. I'm the one in the black sort-of-but-not-quite-a-cowboy hat and black leather jacket.
School grounds are private property...sorry to just barge right in on the convo
AW, you still scouting Merriam? My diggers were there as well seems to fit but should have been found by now all the leaves have been over turned and snow is very thin.
I remember times long ago that I was with my granparents hunting this thing. I have been doing this for a long time but really dont think thats important the fact is we are all here now I was so disgruntled yesterday watching people complain about "Lurkers" I thought to myself if ya dont like being watched dont show yourslf. Welcome fellow "lurkers" and other new people. And a question to all the old timers??? are you all okay with us being here? I hope you dont feel as though we are intruding. No one runs the World Wide Web. Okay now I will get off my soap box and go back to my longfellow thoughts
hillcrest knoll new park when big storm hit few years back all houses flooded they were bought by city and torn down now its a knew park
I think everyone is welcome....that is what this carnival is all about.....young and old....carry on the tradition
headin out ya'll happy huntin!!!
Jim I don't have a problem with Lurkers in general but I feel that they should show themselves and be part of the conversations maybe they could help us out some...
what about Dayton's Bluff? It has both parking, tot lot, baseball, fields,Mendota St.,car repair shop, huge fire years ago started from a spark, Indian magnet school is near,Bluff rhymes with rough?
ian, fox, what do you think?
AO....nice thinkin
Thanks Marie.. I appreciate that My mother was here yesterday and was watching and got a bit pissy about the way they were talking abut "lurkers" I had to say all that for her HaHa
What's streets are by Dayton's Bluff
jim, we "old-timers" like newcomers. everyone's welcome. well except for a guy who calls himself mr. news. he's not welcome :) and if he shows up, its best just to ignore him, hard as it may be.
Thank You Too Ares. anyway lets get back to the task at hand. has anyone seen my medallion?
Nope..... :)
Along with others not in order: indian mounds, duluth and case, lawson and rice, phalen, merriam, baker, knoll hillcrest, cheokee hieghts, como, minnehaha, frost lake, belvedere, dunning, linwood, sackett, hidden falls, croby, marydale!
Just about any park still fits though!!!!
HI JIM I DIDN'T KNOW YOU KNEW POETRY
Am i Rhyming yet?
How about Hazel Park?
jc, i saw it last year in a picture
it went that-a-way, jim. also, you're all welcome at the rehash bash on the 3rd at whatever park and rec the medallion's found in. (green's not here so i guess i gotta take on that job for a while!). i s'ppose i'm gonna hafta haul myself there this year, too, huh ter?
slim, I could be at park in an hour. Do you plan to dig or simply scout around?
its all this school crap and the internet I get all my info from here because I have no ability to think rationally maybe this treasure hunt is meant for me
ill be there then too. me and big slim. scout with shovels!!!
Are you guys all off of work and/or shcool or what??
see ya slim
work. well physically at work anyway.
has anyone been out today whats the count at parks?
