danielle, they've been known to sit in their cars looking like they're reading the paper at lunchtime as well. if you're out and you feel like you're being watched, you probably are, and its probably a spotter.

Spotters are people that the Pioneer Press has go out to the park and make sure we don't trash the place and see if we have truely found the medallion.If you think you have seen a spotters or a group of them you are probably in the right park.

why would the spotters have a chicken, ian?

the people we refer to as spotters work for the pioneer press. they scout out the hiding spots, as well as other popular locations, even if incorrect. that way mom press knows when the medallion's been found. traditional attire includes dark clothing at nite, binoculars, lots of high tech communication equipment, sunglasses, etc. or at least that's the conspiracy theory of the day.

When the treasure started in 1952 the treasure was hidden by editors and brothers, Daniel and Robert Ridder. They wrote the clues and hid the treasure and were the only two people who knew the treasure location.

An article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press in the 1970's stated that the treasure was hidden by two couples known only as Mr. and Mrs. X and Mr. and Mrs. Y.

It is unknown who or how many people are involved in the clue writing and hiding process for the modern day treasure hunt. It still is one of the best kept secrets in St. Paul.

matt. the poetry's great. one favor to as though. when you're posting it, it could be taken as being the actual clue. we actually had one guy do this last year, and the reception he got was less than welcoming for it. put a note in there emphasising that it's not the clue, especially this close to clue time.

was at BC and i was thinking ahead, i found i could see these things: First Bank, Mounds Park Light, 3M sign, sliding hill, ball fields, and a building off of ruth and burns that looked like it had phone towers on it. BC looks very good right now =)

The good side to that story is that if I had let her keep the earmuffs, it may have been the first year the medallion wasn't found until sometime years later!

And folks would have hated us for ending the hunt so soon. We were there on clue 5 that year.
