Well you see,I was musing that the cluewriter has a preoccupation with superheros......"man of mettle" from last year and "Have no fear" as in superman is here...this year.

Therefore:

This guy reads way to many comic books and must then have put it in Belvedere Park.

not so much from a point of where it is, but looking at where it isn't. if you've got a park that only got a couple of inches of snow last time around, and doesn't get a lot of protection from the sun, its possible that the snow may well be gone from it!

or they're confirming for us that its actually in the snow somewhere.

One person writing the clues isn't impossible at all. Although I will admit that I suspect after one person writes them, at least one or two other people will maybe do some editing possibly. But one person can do it. I don't think it's really that hard if you follow certain procedures that have probably been handed down through the years.

So anyway, after Clue #1, here are my top picks in order:

  • Hidden Falls
  • Phalen
  • Highland
  • Battle Creek
  • Marydale
  • Irvine
  • Langford

These may change as right now they are more based on assumptions from past patterns than they are on the clues. But right now I would estimate there's an 90% chance it's in one of these parks. A 9% chance it's in a brand new park, and maybe a 1% chance it's in either Mears or Indian Mounds.

I still think a pre-clue was divulged, however, the clue writers of the past have always been pretty straight shooters. They don't seem to diverge too much from year to year.

    Here are some more stats:

In the 1950's, when the hunt started, there were eight hunts and they were all new locations (not too surprising).

In the 1960's 6 locations were new, and 4 were repeats.

In the 1970's 7 locations were new and 3 were repeats

In the 1980's 6 locations were new and 4 were repeats

Since 1990, there have been 12 hunts during which two locations were new and 10 were repeats.

I may have to revise my previously stated numbers. I guess the possibility of it being in a new park is probably actually at least 20% if not higher. Granted, as time goes on they run out of parks more and more, but there are still a lot out there that haven't been used.

As for the Capitol Mall, I'm going to go ahead and discount that because it's not actually a park. The last time it was there the clue did read "public ground". As for the Conway question, I do believe the official title of the place was Conway Park and Recreation Center.

So...I drove to the Landmark center (parked in the no parking area) went upstairs and their lights were on in the WC office but noone there---I wrote them a note and slipped my note with 4 registrations under their door at 2:43 pm! I pray they take them!

Well - not that I am any good at this, I still think Lilydale has a shot. For one thing it is not on Harriet Island, but Lilyday is connected and near the Airport. Also, The Capitol Mall is listed in one spot as a park, and another as not. But the Capitol is not a St. Paul Park, it would be a park in St. Paul. And if we go w/ that theory - can we rule out all regional parks because 'yes' they may be a park in St. Paul, but not a St. Paul Park? Any thoughts on the matter?

I don't think it would be in Lilydale, because that's not St. Paul. But I'm inclined to go with a broad interpretation of "St. Paul park" and assume they mean a park in St. Paul and not specifically a St. Paul city operated park. Although if I am going to go with loose interpretations, maybe I shouldn't assume they realize the Capitol Mall isn't technically a park.

Are they basically in the same place -merged, like the area as a whole?----I think that happened to Linwood too were 2-3 park areas merged to make one park with areas in the park named the old names? Linwood-Haldeman Park-Ridgewood park ---anyone know where the later of the 2 are any more?

not sure but would that be Central more to the west of the capitol -right across the street ?? anyone know? I guess I just considered it all Central/Capitol

Well it says that Central Park is on Constitution Ave & Cedar and also says (On top of the ramp), and that it is 2.5 Acres. The whole capitol mall is 36 Acres it says which I cannot believe so I don't know what they are talking about. I think they are including the land that the MN History Museum is on, but still that seems a bit large.

I see by perusing the paper today that the hunt is on in earnest.Though it's been hidden there too often already-the first clues make me think of Como Park.

"Let the medallion search in you light a spark",is one line.this could allude to Sparky the Seal.I don't know if the present Sparky is still alive, but everyone familiar with St. Paul has heard of the beloved seal.

"Far and wide-take your hunt-have no fear",reads another line.Far and wide is where all the various animals come from to stock Como Zoo."Have no fear'could mean an animal species, such as that new polar bear from San Diego Zoo.Being in captivity-these critters wouldn't instill fear in any case.

That's what I think today.Tomorrow I might be searching that long, skinny park by the river.

Perhaps it was a misprint and instead of 36 Acres - it is supposed to be 3.6 Acres - now that makes much more sense! Glad we got that cleared up. That is what they must have meant.

Just checked the contest board. All my deductions are blown in the wind. It's not at Como Zoo-though it didn't actually say it wasn't at Como Park.As usual, not on a golf course,as they don't want complaints about damage,it's not at Harriet Island-as it's now a regional park.Also-they probably don't want digging in the improved park.

Spark must mean fire-somewhere near a public barbecue site.

Hmmm, doing the math here, if Mears was 1/6 mile by 1/6 of a mile, it would actually be almost 18 acres! A 1/16th of a mile x 1/16th would make it 2.5 acres.

But they act like they really don't want to do it--but it is their jobs. I hate being around people who when working put their noses up in the air. If you go down their, just watch how they watch us--fake smiles and crazy looks and all. If we're going in that direction-I'm thinking of the original Battle Creek Park where the Highwood area begins.Closed for years-it's been open to the public for awhile.Chief Kaposia and his Lakota Sioux fought their dreaded enemy, the Ojibway back in 1842.I used to go down there a lot as a kid.In those days, the caves were open.

I could be wrong, but I do think it's falcon heights. The St Paul campus is in falcon heights.

But, I do not believe that they would put it there. They patrol that very regularly. In college, I walked around in there during non fair times and were watched quite closely by a patrol in a truck. I don't believe it would be any different now.

Spark for fireworks and perhaps, patriotic, but since when is government patriotic really.

The State Fairgrounds are defintely in Falcon Heights, albeit right on the borders. You can't always rely on zip codes to define border. For example, I live in St. Paul, but have the Little Canada zip code. Besides, the Fair is not a park.

Or the presence or absence of water? Perhaps what the medallion is in? More things for us to noodle and over-noodle!

Just as FYI, here are the words that rhyme with "park" that the clue writer had a choice of using:

arc, ark, barch, bark, barke, clark, clarke, dark, darke, harc, hark, harke, karch, lark, larke, marc, mark, marke, marque, merc, narc, parc, parke, quark, sark, shark, sparc, spark, starck, stark, starke

Not too many useful ones really, so I'm not inclined to think choosing that one necessarily has a special significance.

Fireworks at the Capital can be seen from several vantage points...Cherokee, Prospect, Mounds, etc.,

Far and wide could refer to just about anything - including the river flowing far and it's certainly wide.

No fear could be anything or nothing...but I like the idea of air travel and Holman field...seen from Mounds. Can it be seen from Cherokee?
