I truly believe that Marydale would be too much of a risk this year with thin
ice. If it wasn't for the lake issue, that would be a good park - especially
when there wasn't snow around. Lots of trees and undergrowth around there.

Only reason I throw marydale in there is the other 3 are so big, they might
put it in a small, seldom (once in this case) used park to throw everyone off,
bigger might not be better, but then again that could be way off
The thin ice is also a good reason too, but if they write the clues far in
advance, there is no way of knowing weather there will be thick enough ice or
not

Tim - Keep an open mind. All except those mentioned in the rules are fair
game. Don't start eliminating in your mind too early. That could cause you to
miss something...like the correct park!
Don't make your picks fit the park...make the clues lead the way to the

I've been thinking about Harriet Island, and I feel that this is an
indication of what's to come.
Years ago Maplewood was eliminated, now we need to rule out one of the majors
in the city. If this is the case this year, it will be the case going forward. I
don't see this park ever being eligible again.
Its a shame. Just like you guys, I don't destroy when I hunt. However, in our
collective frenzy, we're perceived as ravigers of the city during the event. And
with a fourteen million dollar pricetag, I'm sure some phone calls were made to
keep us away.
Granted, the war zone we leave to the quiet of February may look awful, but
the snow will melt and the grass will grow as usual. Ironically, one spring
flood can do more damage to that park than fifty years of treasure hunting in
all parks.
Go figure.
In that we've got limited control over the various morons that are clueless
to the obvious.
You'll see them this week. They'll be looking through the trash or sticking
their shovels into places that they shouldn't. Perhaps they may cause a chain of
events that lead to the arrival of an ambulance? I don't know...those high
voltage boxes always tempt me.

and very funny about the high-voltage boxes. my dad's an electrician and he's
got a line that no one dies on his watch unless he does it.
Eags - 03:51pm Jan 19, 2002 CST (#7781

I want to be an iconoclast.
The year we (collectively) "destroyed" Chair-o-key Park, we (some
Coolerheads) agreed to meet there when the snow melted to help repair the
damage. We got there and the part looked pretty good! We picked up some litter,
but everything else was in good shape. I don't think there is typically much
damage done. A few, who dig up soil, wreck trees, etc., give the rest of us a
bad name.
I wonder if the grounds at Harriet Island are pretty fragile due to LAST
year's floods, and they'd just like to give it a rest for this year?

I dunno....I think its about damage control and the fact that the city has
focused a lot of attention to the development of the Riverfront. You maybe
right, Ares...give it some time to age. Yet, the Riverfront project is only part
complete. The powers that be may not be keen to this event coming to this
"investment".

Had a good nap and now it's just a matter of getting dressed up and finding

My take on Harriet Island - at least for this year - is that there's new sod
and much investment in the new park so it was decided by whomever that it would
not hold up well to a hunt. I may think differently about that if it shows up in
the rules for next year as well.

next one. It wasn't upstairs. (At least I think it was last yr and not the yr b4
that I went). Anyway I now believe there is an upstairs, but just ask a
bartender when you walk in as to where they are at.
I guess it should state in the paper in the rules if it is not in Harriet,
etc.

I got the 28 off too. If its not found by then the clues will have it

are the rules about the suburbs anyway? Are there any general rules as far as

"The Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion is hidden on public land in Ramsey
County, but not at Harriet Island, on a golf course or at Como Zoo." - Well I
guess it won't be in Dakota County! I just read the rules as someone previously
stated the above not long ago, but I didn't know where the information came
from.
"At the end of the 2002 Hunt, Pioneer Press Treasure Hunters have the
opportunity to take the published clues to Twin Cities Cub Foods Stores for a
chance to win a $500 or a $300 Cub gift card. Clues and entry information must
be dropped off at any Twin Cities Cub store by Feb. 14. A random drawing will be
held Feb. 15, and winners will be notified by phone."
I think I will have to try the above even if the clues elude me...

Annie, sounds good. Sometimes with a lack of snow and warmer weather, the
difference is made up with a GIGANTIC park! like... Highland!!!!! I know, it's
been there several times, but the big parks mean it might not get found right

Mike - like a spark hit me as in a Matchbook also (a large matchbook box).
Also the small one I have at home is Diamond brand and it is a Red, White, and
Blue box. I think this year will have some patriotic symbolism to it. Far and
Wide - thinking a large park also.

went in the back room and nobody was there. I did not know there was an
upstairs. Come to find out everyone must have been up there.
The rehash-bash is held in the park where the medallion is found. The

have it your way, scribe! i know you will anyway.
You got that right! Wish I could have met ya, Ares. :-)

Just to deny any rumors, no I'm not the new cluewriter. I think I can write
poetry at least a little better than that. On the other hand, maybe that means
the new writer got the job because they can make a good puzzle and not because
they can write pretty clues.
Of course that pretty much trashes my earlier theory about Hidden Falls if it
is indeed a new person. Not that it can't be there, but I have less reason for
believing so.
I do find it curious that they mention the cold and snow, things we didn't
have a couple of weeks ago. Although the first clue could certainly be the last
one written.

"No purchase is necessary to win. Photo copies, handwritten and/or online
printouts of the published clues will be accepted."
"But remember, you may not print out the clues for the Pioneer Press prize.
You must clip the clues out of the Pioneer Press newspaper to be eligible for
the whole $10,000 prize."
Sounds rather contradictory. Although I wonder if one must have the real
clipped clues for the $10,000 and possibly the handwritten or printed clues only
apply to the post-hunt drawing?

I was thinking along similar lines - but last year there was some question
and upon calling the PP, turned out handwritten or printed from the internet
site clues were okay for the whole thing.
Perhaps a call to the PP could clear this up.

No, the last clue writer seemed very concerned about not only rhyme, but
meter as well, and the rhyme scheme they had wasn't that hard to use, even if it
was a last minute thing. For as much time as the last cluewriter seemed to spend
on making the clues sound nice, I don't think they would have settled for
anything that didn't measure up to their usual standard. This just sounds too
different to not be a different person.
