Allison, Phalen does have gates that are closed at night. So that may make it
an "issue" park.
Would parks with issues benefit from Prozac?

My feeling on the Phalen gate issue is that they close the gates if no one is
there. But if it was there, and there tended to be people there around the
clock, they would leave them open.

ok allison, i got the original song out and had to modify your lyrics just a
touch to fit the original rhythm better:
In a dark winter snowfall, cold frost in my hair Warm smell of hot coffee, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light I dropped my shovel and put down my Guide
So I could track through the white. There she sat on a snow mound; With her laptop and cell
And I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell' Then she brought up the website and she showed me the way
There were voices there in every post, I thought I heard them say... Welcome to the Hotel Coolerfornia
Such a lovely place In this Medallion Race Plenty of room at the Hotel Coolerfornia
Only once a year, you can find it here Their minds are Medallion-twisted, tracking all the clues’ trends (ugh)
There’s a lot of crazy, crazy folks, and they’re all friends. How they noodle the clues, thinking they’re set.
But the mistakes they made last year, they tend to forget So I emalied the Sysop,
'Please don’t make me whine’ He said,'We haven't had a monitor here since nineteen ninety nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away, Keep you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say... Welcome to the Hotel Coolerfornia Such a lovely place In this Medallion race
They huntin' it up at the Hotel Coolerfornia What a nice surprise, if they find the prize.
Buttons on the dresser, Leftover boxes of fried rice And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
And on the Cooler boards, They’ve gathered, now they’re stuck They noodle it with their crazy thoughts,
But they just can't find the puck. Last thing I remember, I was Reaching for the drawer
I had to find the map back To the place I dug before 'Relax,'said the huntress, In spotters you will believe.
You can logout any time you like, but you can never leave

I think I remember now the post New Daddy was referring to, but I don't think
I made it. Hence I haven't been able to find it. Still, with all the "rules" one
might infer from the patterns of the past, it seemed last year at least that the
cluewriter was out to break all those rules. And even though the hunt went
longer last year by two clues, I suspect it still may not have been long enough
to make them happy, so they continue to try and break those unwritten rules.

nevermind nd, it was 9532 and here it is in its entirety (and if 666 is a
satanic joe, is this an uber-satanic joe?):
Bax-Man72 - 06:03pm Jan 17, 2001 CST (#9532 of 28288) Hunt #3 for this non-MN
Native! Well I wouldn't agree and say they were bad clues, but I felt that last
year's clue #5 was just too easy to be Newell. Of course I stood about 10 feet
from where the medallion was eventually found and thought to myself "nahhh, not
there" so go figure!
Anyway the idea of "too easy" got me looking at the past 20 years worth of
clues and explanations (from the Cooler Crew Website) looking for what the first
5 clues had to say and what really is "too easy" and here are some interesting
(or not) numbers:
# of times the "blanket" clue has indicated Ramsey County: 8 # of times the
"blanket" clue has indicated St. Paul: 10 (including the last 5 years) # of
times the "blanket" clue has indicated neither: 3 (94, 89, 80)
# of times the specific park was indicated by a clue: 2 Clue #4: 1 (97) Clue
#5: 1 (94)
# of times a park with a golf course has been excluded: 2 (00, 99)
# of times a specific park(s) has been excluded my means other than not a
golf-course: 3 Clue #1: 1 (86) Clue #4: 1 (97) Clue #5: 1 (96)
# of times a street near the park is indicated: 6 Clue #1: 1 (93) Clue #4: 1
(94) Clue #5: 4 (00, 98, 97, 82)
# of times a directional area in the city or county was indicated: 2 (97, 84)
# of times an activity available in the park (skiing, sledding, horseshoes,
etc.) is mentioned: 10 Clue #2: 3 (99, 90 87) Clue #3: 2 (98, 80) Clue #4: 3
(00, 91, 82) Clue #5: 2 (93, 80)
# of times what the medallion is in is mentioned: 18 Clue #1: 2 (95,89) Clue
#2: 6 (00, 97, 96, 92, 91, 83) Clue #3: 6 (94, 93, 88, 86, 84, 82) Clue #4: 4
(00, 95, 91, 82) Clue #5: 2 (93,80)
# of times landmarks around the park are mentioned: 25 Clue #1: 1 (92) Clue
#2: 2 (98, 84) Clue #3: 9 (00, 99, 96, 95, 92, 91, 89, 87, 81) Clue #4: 4 (98,
93, 92, 85) Clue #5: 9 (99, 98, 95, 92, 91, 88, 8, 85, 83)
# of times landmarks in the park are mentioned: 26 Clue #1: 1 (91) Clue #2: 7
(99, 92, 91, 90, 88, 87, 85, 84) Clue #3: 3 (97, 95, 90) Clue #4: 8 (00, 96, 89,
88, 87, 86, 81, 80) Clue #5: 6 (97, 93, 92, 90, 89, 86)
# of times another event held in the park was mentioned: 1 Clue #2: 1 (89
Taste of MN at the Capitol Grounds)
Now assuming that early on in the hunt a "meaningful" clue is one that helps
narrow it to a park, specifically one that a) indicates a park by name or b)
excludes a park by name or other means or c) indicates a street near the park,
and not one that talks about landmarks in the park or near it as there are so
many possible interpretations, then:
A) 12 of 20 times a "meaningful" clue has been mentioned in the first 5 over
the past 20 years or 60% of the time. (So maybe last year wasn't "too easy", it
happens about 1/2 the time, of course street names only happen 6/20 or 30%, but
that is okay for this argument)
and
B) There was only a 1 in 5 chance in the each of those years (except 00 which
had 2) that of the first 5 clues a particular clue was the "meaningful" clue!
So that means we have about a 60% chance of having a 20% chance of noodling
the correct clue in the first 5 to get us to the right park!
Don't know if anyone cares about that or not, but it kept me busy in the past
couple of "pre-hunt" days so I thought I'd share! I'm just glad I've got you
people to steal from! :)

i'd say that under the overpass or at victoria & 35e, which is not
actually part of linwood, or under the mailbox, would qualify as the smallest
area ever used. park-wise, newell comes to mind as being one of the smaller
ones, i'm pretty sure its smaller than conway.

Well, the 35 and Victoria thing was ages ago right? So we can sort of rule
something like that out from happening again. But the parks you
mentioned...Newell, Marydale, Conway, etc... Are all much larger than parks like
Mears as well as Most of the Rec Centers. Really there are only 10 or so parks
the same size or bigger than newell. IF we use that it sure limits the field.

Here is a breakdown of the exact resting place as givin in the last clue over
the past 10 years
4 times it was X amount of paces(divisible by 5, from 20-90) in a specific
direction from a landmark ie 90 paces SE of slide etc.
3 times it was where you would line up landmarks or between landmarks, ie
line up street address with line of trees.
2 times by group of trees or picnic tables (kinda vague)
1 time in field north of building (pretty vague)

While I agree with Jake that Mears is a small park, I'm not sure if it was
really the smallest. Definitely not the smallest by far. I'd say Irvine gives
Mears a good run for it's money, and I think it may be even smaller. I was only
there once though so it's hard to say for sure. It's a cute little park though.

I really hope they never put it there! the people who live around there are
nothing but anal in their old age! I listen to it on my scanner and here
complaints all the time about the parking and how they want people towed away
because they are parked on the streets. One time a woman demanded that a car be
towed because the day on the sign was that day but it was a holiday and the
police told her they would not tow.- OOOOOOPS, got the spelling wrong on

Clues are grouped, 1-3 location within city/warnings, 4-6 what park has to
offer/direction e,w,n,s of citie's, by 5-6th history . Should be near or in
park. Rest of clues lead you to direct location of the plastic within
park-naming streets, trees in numbers or rocks, they really don't go down to
paces anymore, just general location.
Of course I'm just guessing. Luck is always good!

So what I'm wondering is if we should get some sort of game going for
Saturday? In the past we've played hunt trivia games but I think we've exhausted
that possibility, especially since Jake knows just about everything. I was
thinking of maybe making up some virtual hunt with clues. People could be on
teams and with each clue narrow down where they think the treasure is. Id have
to work out the details, but something like that.
