Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

Its interesting to note which parts of the parks still have a little snow, that would be a good spot to put the med. Especially if he/she drops it during the forecasted rain to snow Sun/Mon. Its supposed to stay below freezing, and it would be in the hard crusty layer.

There was also discussion about hunts without snow. To the best of my recollection, there has never been a hunt totally without snow...though there have been times at the beginning there was little or none but snowed later...and a few times where a January thaw in the middle melted just about everything by the end of the hunt.

Of course after hunting for as long as we have, the hunts tend to run one into the other in one's mind...and the file system between the ears tends to run together some.

My apologies to Ares then...but here's the true story.

The year it was at the Capital Mall, the earmuffs were picked up, walked across that public ground and then put back somewhere - close but probably not exactly where they had been originally placed.

Yup. My daughter did that....and hasn't hunted since. She said that if your mother made you put it back, it wasn't worth hunting for it in the first place.

Now that she's 23, I hope she'll someday carry on the family tradition of the hunt.

I still noodle clues with my Mom. She is the one that got me hooked on this. I was out hunting with her some the very first hunt...just a couple months before I was born.

She can't get out anymore due to arthritis, but her mind is still sharp as tacks and often sees things that I miss.

Just take a look around here. Think of all the offices and people that work around here. Probably dropped those coming or going to work. I'm sure they'll be looking for them. You go put those back now and make that person happy that she found them tomorrow.

I think of all the hunts, the Langford hunt surprised me the most. There were hardly any hunters ever out there. We had found it early on...mostly by studying maps and doing those drive-by scopings of parks. Most of the time I was sure but not sure it was there...and the only reason I wasn't sure was because of the lack of hunters.

Here's an interesting quote about the hider from a pioneer press clip on Feb 7,99

"One of the newspaper's earliest treasure hiders was the late Marsh Genshow, promotion director during the 60's. .... On another occasion, Genshow and a co-worker were just about to hide the treasure late one bitterly cold night..."

So theres a good possibility that more than one person knows where it is, which makes a good possibility that there are spotters (atleast two)

Exactly!

There has to be more than one who knows...if for no other reason than if the one hunter were to suddenly die.

And why wouldn't they spend time out watching the hunt...if for no other reason to see how people are interpreting the clues.

I also think there's a security reason for spotters...and a certain insurance for the PP that once it's found, it shows up at the PP offices within a short time.

It does help make up for the times we were never in the right park.

The year it was at Kellogg, I was certain...absolutely certain it was at Harriet Island. Couldn't figure out what those fools "over there" were doing. At least we weren't totally alone. There were others at Harriet Island too.

The only time we were'nt in the right park (in the last 5 yrs we've been digging) was at Newell. We just didn't want to believe it was there! We put a shovel in a few other parks, but didn't really get to dig much and Boom it was found. It was so disappointing, like getting all dressed up with no where to go.

Whether you find the coin or not , it sure feels good to atleast be in the right park!

It's bound to happen. You get your theories and go with those. It's happened to us....it will to just about anyone who hunts long enough.

That's why I'm always happy when I get to the right park. The finding by someone else is always a disappointment, but it's not nearly as bad as if you were in the wrong park shoveling snow totally off course.

The year it was at Conway, we were first at Newell with the tree that looked like a 4, then at the Capital Mall...I was sure that was where I was to get my chance to revisit the earmuffs thing...and then finally to Conway.

We were in the right area and the right park. Pretty good considering we were truly unsure of that park at first.

Right!

And it also helps to look at the hunt as a long range thing, the goal is to find the puck, but we have years (knock on wood) to accomplish that goal. No year searching is ever a wasted year just because you didn't find it (or even if you find it and put it back:). There are other things to gain (like good times and good friends) and it adds to your knowledge and techniques. A process of perfection so to speak.

And this forum sure has added to the gain of good friends! It's nice that we're all gathering early here to shoot the breeze and just get into the getting to know each other mode.

I truly believe the length of time that one hunts makes a difference to how one sees the end of each hunt.

The friendships and passion for the hunt can last a lifetime. Each hunt has a definate beginning, middle and end...and they're all different.

A good example of the friendship thing occurred today as a matter of fact.

We spent today with someone we met because we hunt...even though this person doesn't hunt. We've found many other things though that we enjoy about each others company.

She knew we were hunt-o-holics...so as part of the plan for the day, she created her own hunt for us!

I don't doubt that medallion fever will die out. I know I was interested in it as a child, but my parents never took me out for it. With Cherokee, I remembered about it, was old enough to venture out on my own, and have become hooked. Look forward to sharing the fun with my girlfriend, who hopefully in turn will be my wife, and together we'll have children to hopefully share the experience with years from now....

Get ready for the Mock Hunt in February at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/theallisonwonderland

Some late night ramblings and what I suppose mught be considered a guide to posting ettiquette.

I never do Joes myself because I have no desire to pay any sort of homage to Joe Medallion. In fact I've always been sort of puzzled by the practice. Anytime someone asks why it's done, Joe's name and legend lives on when it's really probably best forgotten. Not that one can't call attention to having the post that marks a major milestone, but I suppose I'd call it something else.

As for off topic posts, sometimes some things come up in conversation. For example my job hunt comes up as the explanation of why I should have a lot of time for hunting, and sometimes the conversation will stray even further off topic from there. And I think that sort of thing is fine as it builds the community. But what I think some people are objecting to are posts that start off as off topic to begin with. If someone were to just come in and started posting about what they had done that day, I can see where other people, who come here to read about the treasure hunt, would feel like, "Why are you telling me this?" It's kind of a subtle difference, but there is a difference between coming here to chat about the treasure hunt and getting on other topics and coming here to chat about other stuff and ignoring the subject at hand. One of the rules for public speaking is "Consider your audience." So I wouldn't assume that people who come here to discuss the treasure hunt will necessarily want to hear about other things unless someone gives you an indication that they do.

Also, from past experiences, I think people tend to be a bit leery of anyone who uses a lot of posts to simply talk to themselves.

So anyway, I don't mean to come down on anyone, but since the subject was brought up, these are things people can consider if they don't wish to generate any ill will from those who read their posts. The basic rule is to ask yourself if what you're posting is simply because it's what you want to say, or is it because you think it's what someone wants to hear? While normally it might be hard to judge such a thing, a safe guideline is that since people are here for the treasure hunt, discussing something related to that is a post of interest. Discussing anything else, unless someone has already asked about that topic, is probably not of interest to the group.

One part was everybuddy was drinking Cokes and Trent went into a tissy because you could read "CocaCola" on all the cans. He made us all turn the cans so you couldn't read the name - whethr we were holding the cans or they were sitting on a pic-a-nic table, or whatever. We were kind'a forgetting this, not letting the name show, so Trent took the cans and mushed them so they only fit in our hands only one way, that being so you couldn't read "CocaCola"!!!!

and natalie's....

Good Afternoon!

A week from today we should at least have the County/City thing figured out....

Marley - I too would like a bumper sticker!! I've been trying to get someone to have some interest in making some up over the years but no one has ever bitten. It would be SO cool when you're out cruising parks to see a bumper sticker on the car in front of you and know you have a common bond (beside the hunt). How about just a simple "Coolerheads Prevail"?? I don't know what the rules are for using the images off the PP site, but I'd hate to see anyone get in trouble for something improper.

Green - There have been many, many times the medallion has been moved. Tossed with the snow or the clump of dirt/clay/grass has been strewn from it's original hiding place. It's bound to happen. Not intentional by the hiders but unintentionally by the hunters.

When those earmuffs were um...moved...it was very, very early in that hunt. Maybe third day. We were about the only folks around there...and the snow was no more than an inch deep. Light, fluffy, kick through it with your feet snow. I don't think the spotters had taken their places yet.

You know how when something is rather traumatic or big events in one's life occur you can see the whole thing in your mind as though it were yesterday? Almost like time standing still for that moment? That's how that event is for me.

The snow came and went.

I just added some huge detailed images to the site. I mean Huge. Its big (and maybe slow on some of your browsers) but if you click on #6 on the new Harriet Island Map, you'll see a detailed panoramic of the river/skyline from the park.

I've also got a page that will contain updates to the parks since the last edition. You can get at it through the "200 photos" page.

You may want to print these photos and add 'em to your guide.

I'm impressed with the City's focus on park redevelopment. Como's had quite a bit of renovation in the last few years and the development down at the river is massive. My guess is that these budgets are soon to vanish in light of the recessionary times.

That little area by Payne & 7th is like a trailhead for the Bruce Vento trail. It used to be called the Swede Hollow trail, as it does go through that park. The trail ends up just feet from Phalen and the path around the lake, believe the cross streets are Johnson Pkwy and Jessamine? That doesn't sound right somehow, but it's whats in my head.

Found Irvine. What a darling, precious, beautiful park! Looked like something rite off a postcard!

I wasn't the only one driving in circles... Sumbuddy else was casin' Irvine...

Was it THE HIDER? Who knows? Only The Shadow knows for sure...

It's not at Harriet Island, but get a virtual tour of the park at medallionhunt.com

I'm kinda nervous that the clue writer won't be given a good opportunity to hide it. Anyone else feeling this way?

wouldn't worry about that guide. they're creative enough to hide it without snow. they just haven't had a recent opportunity to prove it lately.
