yes, yes indeed...I need padded walls...or just someone to drag me kicking and screaming from this awful keyboard.
katie- I agree with you on the dove thing..that was my first instinct as well
earl is just a mans name which the sign is made of steel, that is what that part referrs to Mettle is courage which I havent quite got maybe the indians were courageous?
In my experience its not unusual for the clues to mean exactly what it sounds like they mean as the clue writer doesn't seem to be as deceitful as we like to think. So I think off base does probably refer to softball fields, which in and of itself is not a terribly limiting clue.
gotta go - be back in about 15 minutes.
need to put my youngest(1 1/2) medallion hunter down for a nap. He is only partial help during the hunt because he is not able to shovel, but he tries to eat the snow as the rest of us ponder and shovel. LOL He will be a master at this medallion hunt stuff when he reaches our ages.
talk to you all soon.
I was thinking a fire pit perhaps. "fettle" could also refer to a hearth.
Fettle means Fit doesnt it
Allison - I agree with you on that one. Definately a baseball/softball reference.
Has anyone considered James J. Hill as the "man of steel"?
uh...I dunno, I'm only a teenager, I could be wrong. I'm begining to think that riding around in a circle coud be a merry-go-round
Well, just got back from battle creek, i think it is there regaurdless of what anyone says! i stoped at hidden falls, como, and phalen also....i have to strech the clues to fit those parks...they all fit to battle creek...i am going to focus my efforts there intill somthing cant fit there....
think the merry go round is right as well but its near the BASE of it
The "off base" clue could keep us from digging up baseball and softball infields, which was the case at Conway two years ago. That was a mess...
I don't know aw, step, my first thought about being off-base was military. haven't thought of jj hill as the steel man, he was a railroad robber baron; but andrew carnegie crossed my mind, and he funded quite a few of the libraries in the city (step, you're close enough to arlington hills. walk in, turn around, look up above the door "carnegie library").
I thought maybe it was McKnight because 3m used to be Minnesota Mining.
too much to ponder!!! where's my advil??
Ares - AHHHH there are so many people it could be. I'm going nuts here!!!
I think the man of mettle is who we want, and he probably has nothing to do with metal.
I think the riding around takes up a lot of space, and thus is something bigger than a carousel.
And I don't think its in Battle Creek. You can make the clues fit using different parts of the park, but they never come together anywhere. Nor do I believe the man of mettle is a knight or Larry Ho.
just think of your tagline, dan. all your problems will magically disappear =)
And MCKNIGHT was the leader or the board of directors in the early days of 3m, he helped turn around the company when it was failing...he pushed to build the lab on the grounds of the 3m center...he had lotts of mettle
It does say "look for his name around our deal" If we don't read too much into it, we might be looking for a street.
speaking of which, your sister told me about your "underage". how'd you get out of it?
the weekend is upon us and it is now time for the garage logic think tank to gather and ponder the clues while tailgating smoking cigars and drinking spotted cow ale we will post our deductions soon but not too soon since some of our dedueces where wild last year good luck
Very true Ares!! :)
AW - Has anyone refered the riding around clue to VRC yet? I think I have an idea. I just got back from there
Wow 27 thanks, I didn't know that. We learn so much from these hunts don't we?
yup, but Mcknight dosent actually touch the st paul side of the park....does it have to do with afton mabye?
Ares - I didn't get out of it...had to pay it. 2 weeks before the big 21.
mabye winthrop?
No, no one has said anything about riding around Valley and I can't picture it myself. What were you thinking?
Allison, you might want to consider a possible link between "circular thinking" and "ad infinitum." I don't want to give it away, but it has to do with Aristotle. I'm working out a theory here, but don't much time on my hands right now. But think about that, there's something to it.
Does anyone think the word "deal" is a bit strange in clue 5? What is their DEAL"??
or just it just rhyme with real.
ouch. you can kill her for telling me if you want :). don't feel bad, though, nate's had his time in the courtroom, too. 72 in a 55 down on 61 that probably couldn't have been him, and a red-light at rice/univ. ironically, he's been eligible for "the program", both times.
AW - The circular slide. Riding around the support pole? I'm not going to use it for the circular thing though. What do you think. Have you seen that slide?
step: you bring us the med, the clues, and a registered button, we give you 10 grand. if you're missing something that number goes down.
I think the word deal is very strange, and I wonder about the word "around" too. Apparently deal also means a plank of soft wood, like pine. Possibly something around a pine tree?
As for ad infinitum and circular thinking, don't know about that. Unless you're talking about the infinity symbol?
27, I think Afton is too far. I wish it was in WBL so I wouldn't have to do all this driving around!
afton isn't in st paul
no i ment afton road...not city of afton....lol
The thing that doesn't connect about that is that the riding around doesn't take a lot of space, unless you want to think they are separate items. But my gut feeling is they wouldn't refer to a playground, then refer to a particular thing on the playground, unless that things is where the medallion is, and I really doubt they would hide it on an active playground.
But "look for his name around our deal"?? What the hell does that mean...
Allison, the word "around" is strange too...i agree.
sorry, I'm easily confused.
I can be such a loser sometimes...this hunt doesn't help me feel any better about it either
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/t/time.htm
that's all I'm saying.
I'm just going to throw this out there...how about harriet island?
My guess earlier, and its just a guess, is that if the man of mettle was someone like Stonewall Jackson, there could be a stone wall around something. Or if it was George Bush, it might be surrounded by bushes. Or if it was James Woods, maybe its surrounded by woods. Still lots of people it could be, but I would lean towards soldiers because of the war references.
Patton, McAurthur
Stallion, you're thinking we should go forward in time to see where the thing is discovered and then come back and claim it? hehe
Kind of reminds me of the chess game we played and the people sitting next to us.
I know this is realy silly, and I keep trying to make it go away, but sometimes when I catch myself offgaurd I see Newall again... help me please!!!!
I'm confussed...what did that website have to do with anything??
This is my second year.....last year got in half way through...by then it was over. So this year I thought I'd really know what was goin on beings I'd get in on the 1st clue. NOT!!!!!!!! I like the carousel at Como. (round and ride) Also aren't there alot of weddings there (June) Has the med always been in a field or can it be on a street corner? Is it generally out in the middle of a field or by something? Sorry for all the questions but the more clues the more confused so just needed some basics...LOL...thanks
This is a big year for the treasure hunt, so I think it will be at a big park, one that is really busy in the summer. Then again since it is such a big year, maybe they will put it in a little place, one that we would never suspect.... I don't know...
My opinion is that the the man of mettle or steel that we're looking for is a name, not a symbolic item. So if it were Stonewall Jackson, we would be looking for a sign saying "Jackson Street" or "Stonewall Pub". Not a stone wall.
clue no. 5 specifically stated that it was boxed and burried correct?
dual references, circular refrence, ad infinitum- NEWALL over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and
Woo Woo
I suspect, as have many others, that looking for his name around the deal is a reference to a street nearby. at conway, we had references to babe ruth and woodrow wilson; pierce-butler, fairview and wheeler last year; annapolis, winona, and wyoming last time it was in cherokee. i also have a hunch that "a man of steel" could be written as "one man of steel" indicating that we shouldn't think of the first man of steel to come to mind.
I thought that James J Hill could be man of mettle too - railroad baron - railroads - round house - but the military thing is getting me going - I'm thinking Ft Snelling State Park, Battle Creek or Mounds are all possible bets - it's hard to say at this point - best of luck to you all tonight! This is definitely harder than last year!
I drove to Phalen today..never been there before. That place is huge!!! I think by the next 6 clues I'll have it narrowed down!
lol nildear.
I agree
Wow Stallion, thats a big one for Harriet Island cept theres no ball fields there anymore
does it really have to be a ball field??
AW,
Are you here....
Fats
Hey, all, just got back from work. I went to Hidden Falls last night, thats my best bet and im stickin with it, although Como might be cool. Has anyone checked out Como today?
CF- why hidden falls?
I'm wondering about the victorious.....does it mean Victoria or was it thrown in there to throw us off
Time to finish up my work and go home. Happy hunting to you all. Maybe we'll see you tonight. I'll be the one with the shovel, scratchin' my head and lookin' frustrated!
Well, if you go back to last nights posts, Regg Man posted alot of stuff about it.
I think it's just another military reference
alrighty, I'll do that..thanks
Lol Nensa
Izzy that could well be or maybe a skiing term for the snow pack
Crap_Face smells like bad dumplings!
I was out at Como today. A few people. My daughter thought the "riding around" reference may be the carousel.
No I don't! You smell like crappy dumplings!
Hello to you too D.H.
nildear, what do you know about olympics in mn.
I'm here.
WHO'S IN HERE USING MY NAME???!!!!
I guess so, but I'm not up on my skiing terms...could someone fill me in?
HEY! someone is in here under my name!!
Shut the hell up, no one wants you here, so leave! WeAllHateYou!
So what do you guys think about Como?
Two CrapFaces? oh no...
this could get interesting
Como, notttaaaaachance, so shut you're crappy face up!
I'm bouts ta bounce to work, I'll be back later, hopefully after the craphead dudes leave.
dh why not a chance?
Hopfully they leave... NOW
Angelica(?)...Tell Sr. Mary that I could use some divine inspiration!
How do you REPORT a nuissance? (D.H.)
como or phalen.
both fit.
you dig?
sysop will decide which little children to put to bed
I think some smaller parks are still in the running...anyone agree?
That would be quite a "duel".
I wonder why they combined 2 totally different clues in #5....
good ? step. linking perhaps?
Someones on with my name!
We all know the medallion is really hidden at Langford Park
How can I report D.H?
off to do some,
Daily drive by's,
EVERYONE the other Crap Face in here that doesnt have the _ under their name is a FAKE one! how can i report them for trying to get me in trouble?
I'm still confussed
NO! The Crap Face with the _ is the fake/
Does anyone know who the Johnson is of the High school Johnson?
for all of you como heads- here is some ammunition- the gates on midway are the result of a wpa(new DEAL) project. over by the torpedo is a rock and a grove of trees dedicated to george washington(man of mettle). there are many bridges linking things over there- also a churchil st(mettle)
governor john a. johnson.
A governor, hence the Johnson Govies
WHAT THE HELL!! I have been coming in here on a regular basis to talk about the clues and to chat with people and all that has been happening to me is that people either ignore me or make fun of my name or now today there is a jerk in here who has duplicated my name and is trying to get me kicked out!
Could he be a man of mettle?
Well, Me (THE REAL CRAP FACE) is going to go to Phalen and check around, I live across the street!
Good luck, Real Crap!
Hey crap face?
Way above in the messages somebody mentioned Aristotle. I did some searching of word meanings. Plato/ Socrates, teacher of Aristotle.
YOU SEE! that was him right there! if you dont belive that I am the real crap_face, you can go to the past coule days clues and see that every crap_face post has a "_" under the name THE OTHER GUY DOESNT!
Just curious, (and I'm sure this must have been asked before) but, if you are trying to find the medallion and win $10,000, why would you be on this board telling people your theory about where it's hidden.
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? I'm the real Crap Face, you're the one trying to get me kicked out, but I gotta go check out the park, I'll be back on tonight, tell ya my findings.
What GooGoo22?
Rocket?
Yes GooGoo22.
QUIT DUPLICATING MY NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Adamski - Because in the initial search for the Medallion we all need help in identifying the park. I would assume the talk will get a little less when we actually get a park pinpointed. Up until then, we all have the same chance to find it, so we pool are resources and see if we can figure it out before anyone not on the cooler does.
will the real crap face please stand up???
if you 2 don't stop acting like children, i'm gonna have both of you thrown out of here. find some way to get along or take it off the board.
we share because it's fun...and if someone can't get it, someone else just might understand these insane clues
or maybe we just have too much time on our hands...
the world may never know
Adamski- if people who think about the clues discuss them then people who actually think about them have a better chance of finding it than some slob who trips over it
Rocket, are you lurking?
Iz - It is a combo of too much time on our hands and the dream that we might actually find it someday.
Ares! you know me! ive been in here since the first clue came out! if you go back to all the previous days that i was in here you will see the _ under my name! hence! I AM THE REAL CRAP FACE! the other guy is trying to get me in trouble for some ungodly reason! REPORT HIM!!! not me! i would do it myself, but i dont know how!
Whatever, I'm going to go check out phalen, I'll be back in a few hours, but don't listen to the other Crap Face, he's a fake.
Adamski- Because the chances of actually finding it are pretty small and based far more on luck and stamina than being able to figure out the clues. Since most of us will never lay eyes much less hands on the medallion, being here and having been the first one to publicly declare the right interpretations of the clues is something of a consolation prize.
mostly it's because we're idiots who enjoy freezing our tails off in the frigid minnesota winter =). of course, no one who lurks here will ever find it. why? we're all too busy discussing the clues to actually go dig.
KNOCK IT OFF!!!!!!! QUIT USING MY NAME YOU JERK!!!!!
SueButt - have you had any thoughts about today's clue. You have had some thoughts on the last few days clues, so I would say you are pretty good at this.
No, I've been here from the start, if you where. you should know how to report people, which is what I just did to you for taking my name.
Ares - I don't even know WHERE to begin to dig this year!! These clues are killing me!!
exactly...were completely insane!!
Adam - Unfortunately that's seldom the norm, The Med IS usually found by some poor slob. (sorry finders) But talking the clues out in the Cooler is funner than blabbing between just you and a couple of friends anyway.
AW - Nicely said
AW...some of us *have* laid hands on the med. Unfortunately for me, I can't even hunt for the darn thing- even though I want to!!
AW - good answer to adamski. It is very much the truth.
The one with the _ sounds like the real one to me.
I stand corrected
as much as I'd like to stay..I must go off and occupy my nonexistant talents elsewhere...goodbye and goodluck to everyone!!!
WILL YOU PEOPLE PLEASE DO WHAT IM SAYING!!! Go through some posts from past days on this hunt and you will see the _ under EVERY CRAP_FACE POST thats how you know IM THE REAL ONE!!
as much as I'd like to stay..I must go off and occupy my nonexistant talents elsewhere...goodbye and goodluck to everyone!!!
Hey Crap....it was kinda funny like 50 posts ago, but it's really getting annoying now. we know there is an imposter so please stop telling us about it. I believe you.
Yes kastinkerbell, but you work for the PP, so that doesn't count!
No! he reported me! I NEED HELP!! PLEASE SOMEONE REPORT HIM!! OR TELL ME HOW!
Well, thanks, but I'm thinking about 5 different parks/rec centers. RIDING AROUND...50's cars on university/downtown...horse(shoes) OFF BASE...blvd around park, or AW's AWOL theory VICTORIOUS...V for Vulcans, Victoria Ave..
ClueMaster - I think it is more help to talk them out on the cooler than it is to talk them out with friends. My husband asked 7 of his co-workers about the clues over an hour lunch today, and all they could get out of them were that it is near an ice rink. The cooler people really seem to have an edge on the clues, because they are hard core hunters.
I tried my best to figure out who's writing the clues this year, but security on the thing is better than that around the Survivor winner!
do I detect an iris suebutt
stink - why didn't you scan it for our sakes when you had it. How long ago did you work at the PP?
I tried my best to figure out who's writing the clues this year, but security on the thing is better than that around the Survivor winner!
My experience last year. I did not register on the chat line. I just read everyones thoughts. After watching this site I was able to make it to Newell which was the correct park. My son and I were there two hours after it was found. I think this is very helpful. Since the clues seem to be much harder this time, and it is just giving us more time to chat. Pioneer press people are having a lot of fun reading too! I love it. Good clean fun.
I'm Back! Anagrams for Man of Steel....

I work there now. I'm at my desk this very moment!
just so everyone's clear, the alleged imposter is the one without the _. nonetheless it is quite annoying.
step, i believe you and i had called phalen last year around clue 3 or 4. only to find it was at newell, and that it had been found before i even got a chance to dig there. i'm liking the frog pond, and since como is at the top of my list, wouldn't it be bold of mom to actually put it there?
catch you guys later. quittin time.
THANK YOU Ares
Yes - Thank You Ares!
Tom - thanks for the list of anagrams. I like omelet foam. I think that was the name of my omelet I had at Key's in Roseville last weekend. It just wasn't good and that term would definitely describe it. What entertainment you have brought me in just one post. LOL
yes! lol, and Loft Enemas
Crap_face - that would be very funny if that is what the PP meant. LOL
I liked females melons, no wait that was from 2 different ones, sorry:)
Maybe that should be your new tag line ClueMaster..I liked females melons
I'd drop the D in liked though!
good evening people!
there was also "tons female" and then "not females" right next to eachother. LOL. this has been "somewhat fun" except for the imposter. But i must go now. Hunting to do, and too many parks to go to.
SB - I take it you were emphasizing the 'ed' in liked - boy you post fast!
Hey Digs!
Sue.....Have you been doing any actual diggin yet? I haven't picked up my digger yet
Just some silly digging...nothing I've been too excited about.
I've only done the "drive by" hunting so far....drove thru hidden falls last night and highland park area by the valley...only a few scattered die-hards were out.
I am Spartacus!
Been home with a sick child today, so hopefully can get out tonight.
boy!...it sure got quiet in here
I am Spartacus!
Inspectordigs - When did you drive through Highland park?
whats good about hidden falls
Joe!
I've had two lil sickies at home this week and now I am trying to get back to 100% myself.
Where did I look for the treasure yesterday?I thought you'd never ask.
Started out on Kent St. in Frogtown and headed North to Marydale Park. The clue of course was yesterday's "man of steel, but not real",or Superman alias Clark Kent.Nothing inspired me there,so I drove around to see what Clark St. had to offer.
Not too much-except it leads to this large open and partly wooded area.south of Arlington.Another clue related to a "man of mettle"which is pretty subjective, but one street bordering this open parklike area is DeSoto,as in Hernando DeSoto. All those Spanish New World explorers were men of mettle.I looked all around that area.My thinking is getting as convoluted as the PP clues. There was this clue yesterday about a buried bird of piece.Didn't see it-but made me think of word which is where the booty is,inside the bird.I started thinking then of that preposterous song SURFIN" BIRD from 1963 which goes--WELL UH-DON'T YOU KNOW ABOUT THE BIRD--WELLLLL EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT THE BIRD IS THE WORRRRRRDDDDD--BIRD-BIRD-BB BIRD.That was recorded by Mpls. own 'Trashmen',so I looked in the trash can on the hill.Cleanest trash can I ever saw-it wasn't there.
As of now-I still think it's in that area.Today's clue mentions plenty of room to ride around. The place has that. And you have to get off base. There is a baseball diamond.
I drove thru HP about 8:30 PM last night...only saw a couple of people walking around and kicking some snow.
Make that buried bird of PEACE.
I love your story David! Isn't funny how one can lead themselves to get excited about a trashcan?
dont forget the DeSoto car, that is made of mettle, or meatal
That may be the first Trashmen noodle I've ever seen. I love the Trashmen and enjoy their entire library of work (one album). But it is a darn fine album. I am partial to the lesser-known "King of the Surf"
Alan, is meatal hard to chew? lol
more likely steel, but...
Funny stuff DH
Hey WGH! Are you here?
meatal is very hard to chew I am fond of the aluminized beef myself
Well, I'm off. We have our own med. hunt here at PP. No actual med. mind you, but we have to figure out the clues to win the prize. I'll check in with yall later!
Supposed to be pretty cold tonight... anyone confident enough to do any actual digging?
Duane--I was digging yesterday, but today's clue has suspended digging by making me give a big HUH?
depends on what the new clue tells me to do, they actually speak to me
stink - do you want our help?
Anyone know where I can get a shovel long enough so I don't have to get out of the car? BURRRRRRRRRRR
alan - The clues speak to me too, but I don't seem to speak their language. If they could just get more clear. LOL
Also worth consideration,I thought was Burr St. because the first clue mentions the word 'duel'.There is a tiny playground called Eva Weldon playground on the corner of Burr and Tedesco. Was Vic Tedesco a 'man of mettle'?I guess not,but Desoto St.is on the other side, but no linkup with Clark St.
There are some circles in that park due to some tic-tac-toe symbols. There is a depression, but no bank around there that I could see.Of course,no one else was looking there but me.Where are they looking?
That sounds very good sue butt let me know if you find one lol
Sue....try one of those roof rakes...*grin*
Fum--that feature has been disabled. You get this font in bold, italic, or just plain ordinary whatever font this is.
I was looking across some of the earlier postings today and saw something about off base=AWOL? I'm not sure if I really get that. Can someone explain that to me?
A lady I talked to yesterday thinks the medallion is in an empty Dove bar wrapper, and I concurred that was a good possibility.Or perhaps a Dove soap box.
I was looking across some of the earlier postings today and saw something about off base=AWOL? I'm not sure if I really get that. Can someone explain that to me?
Does anyone know how to change the font we post or messages in? I used to know but I'm not very familiar with HTML formatting?
a large backhoe with heated cabin works
If you are a military personnel and leave your base without permission you are AWOL...absent wit hout leave
Digs, I think that would make a wonderful digging tool...you could even stand in one spot and make a "circle" around yourself! Now, just attach a flashlight and you got yourself a product!
David--I believe that as well. That is the most solid of any of the things we have. East-West, Bank, Circles, Depression, Mettle, Steel, all of these are explainable in my living room! Hold on to that idea. It is concrete. You can picture it. It must be true, or I have nothing. And maybe I do.
KARL:That's kind of a stretch, but being AWOL could mean off of a military base or post without authorization. It doesn't suggest a location to me.
That posing was meant a wall I think if it is the same ome I read
Ok, thanks Inspector. All the clues fit MLK until the clue last night. However, now I know that, that clue even fits perfectly.
David--agreed. AWOL is a condition of NOT being someplace. It is everywhere but on base.
Alan...I must be losing it...when I first read your post I pictured you sitting in a nice warm heated log cabin with a huge garden hoe poking out the window...*laughing*
what do ya'll think of Highland?
Maybe just hiring the neighbor kids for cheap money, then you wouldn't need to be out of the car. You could just tell them where to dig by walkie talkie. Just tell them it is a great adventure and that they get to actually use the walkie talkies. Kids will eat it up. :) LOL
what do ya'll think of Highland?
DD...
The most I can bring myself to do so far is drive around and a little walking. With a 9-5 job working for the man, I realize that I am not in college anymore and my energy is now finite. This year in particular I think the plan will be to lay back, not lurk mind you, but pull out the digging implements when and only when I know my effort is not in vane. Not to be misconstrued as bandwagon jumping, mind you.
Karl...I liked the stetch somebody had earlier about AWOL = a wall
That's exactly what I was thinking Inspector. A wall fits like a glove for MLK.
the medallion is nowhere it is everywhere it is right here it is right there it is the wind
Huntergirl - I was big on Highland a couple nights ago. I could match many clues, but I am having difficulty matching these last two clues. What are your thoughts on Highland?
Electric D....I agree...similar plan here...I have a hard time going out until I know I am in the right park.
Run, run like the wind, Alan!
Agreed Duane. However, I was so convinced the thing was at Valley yesterday, I did some excavating, if only to create my own near miss story. Now I am just waiting for more clues to fit someplace else--my crew is scheduled to dig next on Sunday--by then I hope to have something more to go on.
I can not run in my big boots
Those moon boots are a bear, aren't they!
I like Highland but are there biking trails there? How about statues?
If your looking, Highland has it all...not that any of it is right, mind you! lol
the big boots are terrible, I just crawl around when I wear them, it is easier than any other form of transportation
what was the 1st park it was found in 50yrs ago
Hubby is stuck on Como, is there a wall there by the lake? You knowm Como Blvd runs around the lake and it does separate the park into east and west...
kop-Highland, but wouldn't that just be too obvious?
Snowshoes might help...or not...
Highland
