It's time to get serious!
I drove around on my lunch break. Found a place that meets many of the clues. But I'm not sold on it yet.
I am sold on the East or West Side idea. That narrows it to a handful of large parks.
FYI -- the pavillion at Harriet Island was a WPA project, for those interested in that theory.
Cuz he got his a$$ reemed last year!!!
Circular thinking and off base makes me not trust any of the clues..
I'm off to dig, good luck to all remember to wear something white so I know your a member of the CC
And if you find 2 medallons share one with me
I am off everyone, Crazy...I will look for the sign..Anytime Regalman New Daddy I hope you are still working on theories that are a little 'off base'
Anyone know where green, terry, or allison are hunting presently??
See ya frost!
Frost...if you're still there..what do what??
anybody ever think there could be 2 treasures?
SueButt have you been lurking?
No No No...I just logged on and did a mini slog..
hi guys. i yust got back from como. ran into one of our resident vamp's there, night digger out across estabrook from the frog pond at the base of the slide, betwixt it and the maze. now, if only it weren't me who brought up the vamp reference for him :)
standing there, i'm pretty sure that if it is in that area, it's gonna be somewhere out of view of the carousel and the conservatory, a feat that might be difficult to accomplish.
thx, if you're still in da house, while the fairgrounds themselves aren't public land, the streets on them are, despite who owns the underlying land. since they're open to and used by the public, state law mandates that they remain so in perpetuity, unless legislation is passed relieving them of that obligation. i can probably find that statute on the legislature's web page if you'd like.
I am off work at 5:00 and will go searching then, maybe then I can meet some of you. I am off to Phalen. Look for the house sign....
C4T50 -
Two treasures is a steratch. That's $20K possibly, quite a jump from last year. JAT???
Bye Frostbite. Have fun working! I'm not.
ooh, yet another off base reference. there are shedloads of national guard folk working on the slide at como, and guess what? well, you're all smart enough to figure out where i'm going with this one.
SueButt talk with Crazy they can fill you in...hope to see some of you tonight about 6? by the house with the sign...
Nensea...i envy you...
Bye New Daddy. Have a good day. (Is it ok if my dog wears white? I am always in black.)
Good Wordplay Ares!!!
Yes, there are at least two treasures. Possibly as many as eight.
The first one to find it wins. The clues match up with all eight spots.
Welcome to St. Paul.
which wordplay, snowball, the guard reference?
off base could also be a "military base" i.e. Ft Snelling area or Holman Field (i.e. St Paul Airport)
Well I'm back from the drawing board. Valley has a lot of space and it has softball fields, but in no reality does anyone ride around in anyhing there.
Allright, somebody fill me in ...
Let the clues lead you to the park...don't force the clues to fit your favorite.
This morning I posted about how a big gang always dreams it's in Como. It's a big park with lots of stuff. Sure you can make the clues match, but that's not how it goes.
Of course, it could be in Como and I'll eat my words, but I doubt it.
Si Si Ares.
Never thought of the military base.
Or is this a reference to the Base jumper that broke his leg earlier this month. Does any park have a place to base jump???
I'll tell you though I absolutely do not believe it is at Como. Nor Hidden Falls nor Battle Creek.
Not having fun at work that is. Too much to do here!
Ok still here but going this time...SueButt we ran with some ok Phalen theory and will be there tonight at 6:00...BYE...LOL!
its doubtful its a reference to the idiot, snowball, these clues were probably written in november.
Frost Ill be at phalen also=)
Sue & AW -
Where do you plan on going tonight??
ALLISON WONDERLAND GO to #17690 and see what you think about that theroy. let me know your out look
Allison! Which Valley are you talking about?
Phalen and como both fit, and with Como reading the clues simply, it fits better than phalen. Analyzing, and going too deep possibly works with phalen. Just don't think they'd nake it that difficult, cuz we make it difficult. Keeping it simple, como is the place, but where to dig with the best chance is the question??(I know!!)
So here's a theory, tell me what you think. Like I've mentioned earlier, two years ago the clues made a lot of sports references with the idea that it was supposed to help you guess that Babe Ruth was the famous man they were referring to. This year they are making a lot of war references and have another vague clue about a man of mettle. Following so far?
Well, since we all are in aggreement of which park, do ya even have to ask? lol!
yep
Go on Allison...
AW -
Continue . . .
we follow ya aw.
donna- In my opinion, making too much of indivdual words and phrases and not going for the entire spirit of the clue.
FUMDUCK- Valley Rec Center on University and Jackson
Snowball, I'll be in Phalen also.
Allison, will your alter ego be there too? lol
AW - what do you think of my "lots of space" = Universe = University theory?
Ok, so what if the man of mettle is a well known warrior? My guess is possibly Stonewall Jackson? Stonewall possibly contrasts "man of steel" and he had a lot of courage. But what really made me think of this was "around our deal". The idea of his name being around something. I couldn't imagine a printed name being around something, but what if someone had a nickname of a thing, and it was the thing they were referring to? What if his name being around something means there is a stone wall around the "deal"?
Does anybody think the old Gillete Childrens Hospital across from phalen right off WheelLock have anything to do with anything
The way I read the clue, the lots of space was specifically for riding around. Trying to go for simplest explanation in that case, I can't think of it as being anything other than bike paths.
My alter ego? Derick you mean?
Allison, read post 17752
Where are you digging allison?? Can i ask?/
you mean, like at the amphitheatre at phalen, allison?
That was my guess too AW. Also the fact that the gates are now open at night and in the past they were not. At least they were last night.
mn - nice Universe take. I haven't herd that before. And I'm partial to VRC anyway. - it may seem like bit of a stretch but it's nice to have more fit than less.
C4T50 -
I had Wheelock down for Circular, and "Steer Clear". I think it could fit, but isn't enought toenoughme to Phalen . . . YET!
Just having a little fun...
What is the significance of that Regalman? And I'll be in Phalen, or do you mean where in Phalen?
Personally, I'm in a big park, on the east side, where the East rd makes a right angle turn and is the border of the park, which is surrounded by private property, which is out of view from the rest of the park, and is in even elevation with a circle thing!
I think it's at PHalen. Cuz last night the gates were open. and the are ALWAYS closed. If it was there they wouldnt keep them closed so people have to walk like a mile. Unless they wanted to be mean LOL. If they are open again 2-night deffinate possibility. If they are closed then somebody was slacking on the job last night
Does it sound too deep or good reference??
At phalen they have all these bridges that connect all these different bike paths and stuff. I know cuz I run it every other day lol
I don't think it is in Phalen or Como
I saw 3 parks and rec trucks parked by hidden sitting there doing nothing, probably slacked!! Hard working, city employees!LOL
Maybe not at the amphitheater, but I'll probably be in search of stone walls for lack of a better idea.
so, animal, what's your theory?
Well it is time to head out.
LOL all, see you in real space, not cyber space.
Yeah, but the gates were open most of the hunt last year at Phalen too.
LOL yeah where can I get a job like that? This school and work thing is killin me
this might be reading too much into but clues 2 and 5 might refer to cows ...steer clear and ...escape the herd
Which ever park it is, i doubt they would give away the name of the park so soon. That is my problem with "Phalen a test" I am not sure where it is, but i doubt it is phalen, besides, aren't the gates closed after dark??
so now AW you are thinking Phalen?
Which ever park it is, i doubt they would give away the name of the park so soon. That is my problem with "Phalen a test" I am not sure where it is, but i doubt it is phalen, besides, aren't the gates closed after dark??
Cows huh? Well there is the ramsey County 4H building up on white bear ave my the Nursing home. But thats in MapleHood
Maybe they leave the gates open if there are people in there hunting? I can't believe the city people know where it is, but they may know that if a lot of people are there, they might as well not close them.
hunter, the part it is in is away from the park, and avoid most hunters and steer clear, and you'll be better off
Digg they werent closed last night
The gates at phalen never closed in winter never ever
Not all gates at phalen were open, some were though
what ever Lele. They do to close
No gates at VRC or Kellogg to worry about
VRC??
Has anyone looked at Crosby Park at all?? It is down by Highland. The "herd" think got me thinking. After all it is off shepard (of couse that is not really cows, maybe stretching a little too much), but Alan shepard was an astronaut and that would explain the space thing?????
Valley rec center??
ClueM...what's you're pitch for the LOTS OF SPACE and Kellogg?
The Saturn deal?
Yes Leah, I couldn't make the riding around part work at Valley so I had to abandon that. I guess I should have known that any explanation that worked *that* well couldn't be right! hehe I have a more detailed explanation in my club, though I can't claim to be 100% sure, or even as confident as I was about Valley, but I can make it work better there than elsewhere.
As for Phalen a test, they did not give away the name of the park. Just because they used the words test and depression did not meant that they were trying to imply Phalen. That's just people reading into the clues a bit much.
I doubt it is at Kellogg--if it is, the PP better be responsible when there are 3,000 accidents and 10 people run over by cars.
so far its a stretch but a thought was the view from the Carousel restaurant. (circular thinking) not the best
We used to live at Kellogg Square, so it just one of those places I'm setimental about...
Really, I am pretty sure that last year someone said the gates at Phalen were locked--or maybe the year before. If they are open there is serious potential.
I can personally attest to the gates at Phalen being closed last winter. I went out there last year around midnight one night and the gates were definitely closed and I had to walk quite a ways. By the time I got back my beard and mustache were both covered in ice.
I also tend to agree Diggin - Liability insurance doesn't come cheap.
I think it's just thrown in middle of a culdisac somewhere- that's circular thinking
ok, where do we hav cul-de-sacs in the city besides the ends of park roads?
Has anyone totally ruled out highland--the only thing i really like about it is the 50 year thing and circular thinking, but other than that i don't see too much there. Any strong feelings on Highland?
base....Ph...PHalen (chemists?)
Ruling out the golf course parts of Highland, but at this point the rest is fair game.
I still like the small public place idea. They could of Told us Como or Phalen in clue 1 and it still wouldn't mean anything to me.
Speaking of your comment Leah! At Phalen rec center on the far end there is a ball feild. Behind the back stop is a circle that the busses turn around in and stuff LOL just a thought
I'm with you CLuemaster
clumaster, LOL!!
both como and phalen make sense, and I bet tonight we find out water surrounds!
water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink...
There is also a turnaround at the end of the main road through Phalen. You can come in that way from 61 (sometimes) but it is a one way so you have to turn around when you come to the one way.
Maybe they put it on jesse's blvd so they can piss him off even more!
I was out there last year too AW, that's why I was so surpised when I went to drive by last night around 10 and found them open.
YEah I used to hang out there in the Summer when I was in high school a few years ago.
Allison, are you going out tonight?? if so what time?
Well, some of us are heading to Phalen tonight...around 7pm or so...anyone else gonna be there? Allison is coming with! Yes...his original idea kinda sunk! he he
Hey michelle, it sank, but it was damn good up until riding
What clues did you go out to Phalen last year? Cuz for the first few the gates were open all night, and people in here were talkin bout how it weird that they're open, so it must be there.
Ill be there I live right across the lake LOL
give him a break now!J/k!!
AW - I'm still on your sinking ship.
at 7 then
Has anyone connected the steer comment from clue #2 and the herd comment from clue #5. I believe it means it may be an old farm area. Maybe trying too hard. I have been digging at Phalen since yesterday and don.t really want to move anywhere else yet.
Cluemaster or no Clue? lol
Walking SnowMAn- Were you there this morning like down in the 3rd parking lot? My the club house
SB - More than likely the latter
You and me both...
I'm failin' to think of anywhere else...
Well, im off to drive around. Catch up with all later.
I was in the bus turnaround area. staying away from the buildings
I like Phalen, and speeking of the war theme--couldn't base then refer to an army base of some sort, or something to do with the military--plus Arlington Ave runs into phalen.
Later Regal - Me too.
Walking- ya mean over at the rec center behind that ball back stop?
Joe
Dang....missed it
MFats..too late
I was in the bus turnaround area. staying away from the buildings
yes, Michelle and I are meeting the members of our singles club and then we're all heading out there roughly around 7.
As for last year, let me think. There was a clue about shelters and Phalen had some. There was the clue about towers and I was convinced that if you lined up the two towers on the ice castle memorial it would point to the treasure. And then something in clue 2 I think it was made me think it was by a flag pole, (something about being the ace driver and in the pole position) and it turned out the two towers, if you lined them up, pointed right at the flag pole.
As for Valley, I can't say it was my favorite ship. I certainly wasn't looking forward to it being there, but everything seemed to work and I had to go with that.
I'll be hittin Phalen lata tonight, after the next clue, unless #7 directs me elsewhere.
I was thinking off base either meant near but not on softball fields, or AWOL (a wall), or that Phalen Park is the base, and Phalen Rec Center is off base.
Im serious you all can come to my house to warm up=) My parents wouldnt mind at all LOL They are treasure huntin freaks also
Hey Allison. There is a wall by the Swimming beach at that building right there
Kaposia Park in WEST St. Paul - near military base, stock yards, has a one-way street.
Will Derick be there with the cocoa?
Then you'd have to put your address on the message board and I wouldn't recommend that.
See ya'll at phalen
Hi Allison...he he. I didn't mean to sink your ship or make fun of it rather...all in good heart, of course. Anyway, we will be there about 7pm tonight...give and take a few minutes...
For Regalman's info...yes..Allison is about as smart as they are made! He is very very very intelligent and really puts a lot of thought into the clues..and you are right! Up until now, Valley looked promising. We will see...
Allison, did I tell you about the dream I had? I think we should look around "those"...see you about 6/6:30 or whenever you can get here...
AW,don't forget about the lighted point on the church tower seen from Phalen last year. Had me going!
In looking at the guide, it seems there are a lot of stone walls all over the park. Do you guys think that may be the right interpretation? Stonewall Jackson?
Hi Guys! Kaposia Park is in SSP, I used to live in SSP. Lots of high schoolers like to drink there at night (I was one of them)...maybe they'll share some with you! LOL!
Yes, you told me about that dream Michelle. Sort of fits with "stonewall". We'll see.
allison, even if it's not a stonewall jackson reference, off-base=awol should be enough to fill in that blank.
I don't think South St. Paul or West St. Paul, or even North St. Paul qualify as St. Paul for the purposes of this hunt.
Wasn't it it WSP one year?
Allison- There are a lot of things that point to Phalen. I dunno I'm thinking that it could be down in the lil Island thing by the picinic building. lots of stone bridges and a bridge named after somebody with his pic on it. (cant remember the name)
Its just that if Stonewall Jackson is not right, it leaves me asking, who is the man of mettle? And its not a knight all you Battle Creek people! I'll bet money on that!
I like Phalen, but something is just not quite right. I am not sure what it is. I probably will be eating my words, but i really don't think it is there. I am going to look anyway and see what it looks like, but something is fishy. I guess i just imagined it in a smaller park.. My best guess is Langford LOL!!
Im thinking the man of Mettle. Is the guy on that bridge somebody made a good point about what Im talking about earlier.
It was in West St. Paul one year, but that year they didn't specifically say its in St. Paul. Sometimes they just says Ramsey Co. (though I don't think its even in Ramset Co., is it?)
And personally, I'm thinking its not in Phalen, not in Phalen PARK that is.
It was so much easier last year, i was at Newell on clue #4
IF the gates are open it has gotta be there!!
Better go, have fun at Phalen, Como, Battlecreek, Highland, Langford...and Good luck!
anyone have a good theory on "riding around can be fun"? that can be so many things.
my theory step was the collection of rides at como, i'm not sure if they're part of the zoo grounds or not, and this concerned me since i noticed signs all around the zoo telling hunters to keep off the zoo grounds.
it may br refering to those old merry go rounds that most parks once had- before all of the new play equip
well Everyone I am here I have been gone on Vacation for the past 7 days and I get back to see the Watercooler hopping again, and 6 clues out there.. I have been reading them over and over again. I seem to like Phalen to start but we shall see where this blasted hunt takes us.
Ares - i thought that too, and there is also a carousel in or near the consevatory right?
Could be the bike path around Phalen. I ride it every summer.
Nensea - it could be, but every large park has bike paths. One thing that keeps coming to mind is that all the highschool kids like to drive their cars around phalen drive, but i don't think enough people would know that to use it as a clue
Hello all.
Boy....slogging the last messages takes quite a bit of time, but can definitely be helpful.
Looks like we are not much more defined than we were two nights ago. I just did some driving around Highland with my dad and only saw one person digging. I so wish I could place all the clues in one location.
Just yesterday I was saying that I usually only try to mentally figure out the clues, but for some reason this year I really want to get out and dig. I want more clues now!!!!!!LOL
Have been hunting for a number of years with my parents and now I am trying to get my youngest( 1 1/2) interested in the medallion hunt. I am trying to get him to correctly pronounce Medallion. He is getting close.
I did have a dream last night that I found the medallion. What a sweet dream that was... only problem was that I found it in my parents yard....and they don't even live in St. Paul. Argggghhhh.
That must mean that I will get close, but will not succeed yet again.
Has anyone come up with new thoughts on the "mettle" clue? I can't even get one person that it might work for.
Has anyone noticed that they still haven't said anything about it being in a park yet?
I don't know what the man of mettle thing is. Como has about 100 things dedicated to people. I guess Henry Ford makes the most sense to me so far. I don't know.
anyone here need a hunting partner?
Leah - where are you thinking it is hidden?
Leah, I'm usually up for hunting together and sharing ideas if you wanna get together some time.
Too true Step.
right now I really don't have too many great ideas- kinda think Como sounds good.
TMK are you going out tonight and where?
What are the odds of them putting it at the Fair Grounds again?
Right now I'm in the scouting stage. Going out to different parks and seeing how well they fit, just getting a feel for them.
yeah that's what I've been doing also- I haven't been by Como or Phalen yet though- probably tonight
I can't get out till later tonight, and by then it will be dark. So I'm waiting for tonight's clue, and going out tomorrow. But who knows, maybe I'll get a chance to get out tonight.
Does someone have a list of the top 5 parks it might be in?
Is this the right site?
The odds of the Fairgrounds this year are zero since its not in St. Paul.
And I do think its significant they have not mentioned a park yet.
How about the disc golf course at highland. i got these ideas in my head last night....
"Circular thinking can be one way of linking" = Discs are circular and "holes" that you shoot for are linked chain into a metal basket.
"East and west are part of our test" = there are 11 holes to the west of antonio drive and only 1 to the east (not to mention a baseball field as well)
"if this choice leaves you depressed, PLAYING might put a smile on your face" = walking the course. digging where the holes are.
Hey all. I'm really surprised people are leaning toward Phalen. I guess my interpretation of the clues is that one or more of them are references to street names or names of other things around. I'm leaning toward Hidden Falls actually. I haven't scoped the park out yet . . .
Step, I don't think you can dig on the course since they still play on it in the winter. AW, are you thinking near, not in?
The course is in the general park area
StepDogg
FYI the metal posts are still in the ground. I drove by there today, and not much had been walked over. I was having trouble matching today's clue with Highland. That is why I drove over there. Still haven't had much luck even after the drive around. I was really up for Highland a few days ago, but I can't seem to get the last few clues to match up.
Jok - THE POSTS ARE STILL UP!?!?! In the guide it says they are removed for the winter. Well that's where i'm going.
Seeking Shadow and the infinate wisdom that he/she has brought to me from the past few years......you here?
Nensea -
From my drive today, it didn't look like they had played the park in quite awhile.
StepDogg -
I walked around a bit, but couldn't find what else might fit. My dad also was having trouble mapping the last few clues. If you come up with something, it would be great if you could post your thoughts.
Hmmm, I have a friend who plays but he didn't say where. That must not be one of the courses that are open all year. Sorry
Nensea - Highland had the only disc golf course in St. Paul
Hi all...What is new?
Nensea - It looks like it is still playable, it just doesn't look like it has been played.
Leah, I seem to have lost my hunting partner now of two years. If you are intrested let me know. :-)
MacGrove - Any thoughts on today's clue?
If I remember correctly, you had some thoughts on yesterday's that seemed close.
Have you driven around any of the parks since yesterday?
I saw someone playing the disc golf at highland a few days ago...
Another note...someone mentioned fairgrounds....It's private property
sorry for taking so long, step. some of us have to at least create the impression of doing work :). the carousel and conservatory are both quite visible from this open area we've heard referred to as larry ho something or other. that's where i went scouting today. both are also known for their roundness->circular thinking. for the med to be there, it would have to be in the vicinity, but out of view from one of them (possibly both?) we've got the off-base guard folk working on the slide there, and coincidentally, it's right across estabrook from the frog pond.
mgm. the streets are public, though this is somewhat irrelevant, since the grounds are technically not in stp.
I haven't been out and about today...I truly think it's too early to be burning all that gas and energy...Perhaps tomorrow.
I have some strong thoughts considering downtown SP though
if it's public land, and no greens fees are required to use it, i say dig away. heck, none of the disc courses i've ever played look "well-groomed"
Wassup Everyone!
where MM
what are your thoughts Philip?
LOL Ares!
I can't stand it anymore! I've had way too much homework to keep up with the hunt...anybody have any fresh ideas??
SUE BUTT>>Sr. Mary wants you to lead us in the right direction!!
Leah, do u use AOL or Aim? If so im me it is so much easier to talk that way. my name is: pdiskerud
that wasn't funny, nensea, it was the dead truth. most of 'em you can get stoned at just breathing there :)
I was over at Como today, I ran across a Tweety Bird, but nothing underneath
Does anybody in here drive a yellow Dodge Dakota?
Anyone find the treasure yet?
Another thought I want to throw out...Beware of over-thinking the clues. Not everything necessarily refers to landmarks and the like...for instance "Circular Thinking" can mean that the clue writers are going to circle the medallion the the following clues.
There isn't N E of those CLOWNS in here, is there?
I like it...what could the word "base" have to do with it...I don't think they'd use baseball again so soon..
hi princess supper is a cooking. So here it is in a nutshell for all the world to see.... First clue, seventh line, first word...drop the "e" and add "o" = Como. Yes Regis that's the final answer!!!LOL
Over thinking the clues is so easy to do because they give us the whole day to think about it. Can't they just give us one clue at midnight and one clue at noon? That would keep us from over-thinking. It might also keep us from working. Glad to hear I am not the only one who peeks at this site while working.
It is just such an addiction. I have even contemplated taking off work on Monday. I already told them I might not be there. I even admitted that I will be there if I can't figure out the clues, but if I can, I won't be in.LOL
Base...Military Reference again
Move off base...think away from the usual digs...not in a park???
Just some ideas...
random question....could the "man of steel" be the michlin man?
good thought mgm
I think I would be amiss if I din't point out that there is an extremely interesting link between "Ad infinitum" and "circular thinking."
snowball 2 eats yellow snow
that's kinda what I was begining to believe..I didn't think they'd go with baseball...that's too easy.
I am curious to see where everyone is thinking it is hidden this year. To me it seems way too general, but it would be nice to go treasure hunting this weekend!
Could be...also could be the statue of F Scott Fitzgerald on the corner of 5th and Market in rice park...anything is possible!
medalionstalion - what is that interesting link? If you care to share that is.
right, right...could be...I'm so confussed.
Post 18000 - HAHAHAHA, I got a joe.
Huge Joe
Hi, Im new here to this website but I am convinced its in Mounds park. There are the mounds that are circular and private ground you cannot go in but can go around them. The man of steel who isnt real is Earl Street that runs perpendicular into Mounds blvd. which runs East and west. And at Earl there is a playground. Mounds Bluff used to be called Bluffs Playground way back in the early 1900s. it also hasnt been there since 1987.
Wait, forget that Joe dude, I JUST GOT A DUMPLING!
I'm running away for now...good luck to all! Keep on Noodling! Ya Dig!?
Katie -
welcome to the cooler.
D.H, It Looks like you were a little "premature" on your JOE
Hey MacMan
Nice meetin ya last nite!
yay! new ideas to ponder! could this keep us from going completely insane? for some of us, like me, it is much too late indeed
Where was everyone last night? I hit a bunch of parks but I didn't see too many people.
OH MY GOD IM GOING TO BE in a padded cell soon!
Thanks. I think it is also in either a dove soap box or an icecream box, according to the peaceful bird, and the base i think that refers to the bottom of something like a sign or merry go round for instance probably not the field that would be too easy.
OK, i'm back, had to actualy work for a bit. So what makes earl a man of mettle?
Good to meet you all last night!
Iz - I don't think you're the only one for which it is too late.....Alot of us seem to be addicted......LOL
Boy I wish I was the clue writer. It would be so fun to monitor this site and laugh at all the strange connections we make. And the longer we analyze a clue the more strange they get.
Parks are going to be packed like Dumplings in a soup tonight.
can the med be at Fort Snelling?
