I like the baseball theory too. It's the most obvious reference the clue could have, but I think it's probably the right one.
Makes for a tough hunt if the treasure is not next to a landmark. Baseball field works well for that.
I was on the home to third baseline at Conway...An awesome hunt.
never learned chess....always wanted to...
dang...i wanna go look at the parks ball fields. kind of a long drive tho
ok....
add up..."our deal" references to cards. east and west...both sides or hands in the game of bridge.
any parks where you can see a bridge from first base of a ballfield?
D - Was it right on the line? Or just by it? Your killing me, I thought it was in that field between the baseball diamond and the ice rinks
Harriet Island/Lilydale regional park has baseball feilds. Is this park diffrent then Harriet Island Park?
how long does a game of bridge go? would either east or west deal on the fiftieth hand? or the first (st paul was there first)
No, there was a mad rush to that small field between baseball diamond and the ice rinks, and that whole area got dug up in astounding speed.
It was actually off the first base line toward the boulevard referenced by a street name, as I recall.
That rush for the ice rinks was awesome, though.
actually an address, I think
jl...if harriet has ball parks i'm going with that park.
boats and bats...look about 10 feet off first base between first and second bases.
if there are two or more fields it'll be in the east or west field.
Sounds good!!!! See you tomorrow maybe! I am down to 3 hours of sleep now so I need to get off this computer.
Time to sleep and dream of.......
Night
fettle = 1. a. Proper or sound condition. b. Mental or emotional state; spirits: “was in fine fettle.” 2. Metallurgy Loose sand or ore used to line the hearth of a reverberatory furnace in preparation for pouring molten metal.
Thanks D - I remember that address too. If I'd only kept digging past home plate. :( I was digging there before the ice rink clue.
You're right about that clue being awsome. I have excellent video of that nights dig. Locust big time!
.....STILL seeking anyone interested in MLK
.....or anyone who's been to Central Village Park (across the highway from MLK).
L & J and D - SCD's
V - Let me look into it again. I try and stray from MLK because it let me down Big Time on 2 different occasions
Malachi you should cool it. j/k anyways I just got done reading all the past posts, gonna do research now.
Clue - I know you do. Per our previous message yesterday, sounds like it hurt big time (Merriam Park did it for me in '99 because of the book reference that I mistook for MERRIAM WEBSTER dictionary writer. It meant RUTH at Conway).
i'm still stuck on harriet...
man of steel cannot be real........real paddle boats are made of wood like the jonathan paddleford
V - My back still hurts. I remember talking with you now. I just don't want anybody to get hurt is all:(
I did learn a valuable lesson though. To calm down and use what little brain cells I have left to save me time (and pain) in the long run. MLK was right at the height of my 'physical' searching career.
CM...i haven't reached that point. i still dig blindly on a whim...if there were any snow here i'd somehow make the clues fit and be out digging.
Clue - I understand. I know the feeling.
WG - Been there / done that again, again, again & again. Still do on occasion. Kinda getting that old feeling again this year because of the crew from New York filming my adventures. I always dig my ass off every year (except last year) but my ass just keeps falling off sooner and sooner is all. 20 years and 50 pounds later. Whew!
WG - Forgive me but were you at the PP tonight?
nope...still in new zealand....
i'm guessing there was a weim there, eh?
That's right - You fly home on clue 16 right :)
yupper...hope it gets that far <g>
oh man...this is huge...remember someones anagram of ALAS BOAT?
check this out from the 12/1/00 star trib
There may be a new act in the saga of the University of Minnesota Centennial Showboat, which almost was ready to reopen near Harriet Island on the St. Paul riverfront until fire destroyed the 101-year- old boat during a major reconstruction last winter.
The Mardi Gras thing tonight was kinda fun. It was good because it made a lot of the searchers stay together before the paper came out watching the Klondike Kate's throw beads and Mardi Gras stuff all over.
They also gave a trip away, right on the spot, to anywhere Sun Country flys. Better than freezing my butt off outside the PP.
this sucks...i'm stuck in summer working and you guys are having all the fun...
dnalsi teirrah
D..T..?
dt?
dnalsi teirrah
have i convinced you?
dnalsi teirrah = have i convinced you?
?
I can't seem to find the article you were talking about. How did you find it?
man if i was there...i'd have shovel and caffeine in hand...
i've drained the mini bar down to some nasty tetlys english pub ale...
it's only 11...think my neighbors need their beer?
My caffeine is about to run out.

oh...and i need more beer
don't see it
i'm about to get knocked off.
our work network shuts off between 11 and 12pm. i can't believe i'm still on...it's 11:12...

See ya WG - SCD's (to me anyway since it's after 4AM here.)
i've seen discussion of that place...

don't know what scd's are...but i gather you're signing off.
i'm gonna go get more beer.
scd's to ya...whatever they are.
Let me check that Anagram site real quick and see
SCD's (Sweet Cooler Dreams) It's a thing us Cooler Heads say when someone says their signing off for the night. I thought you were getting kicked off?
thought i was too...
gonna have to go...at least for a few minutes anyway...beer is gone.

Sup'yo, I'm back to bother yo some more! Ya'll neva gonna find it.
Over compulsive is all.
cm...we aren't alone anymore..

Nah, didn't do no diggin, jux went around and knocked people over the head with my shovel.
dh...i would have interrogated them first. then stuck a dove box by their feet for when they came to...
Just wanted to mention that I've been lurking for a couple days reading all of the coolercrew chatter. Very interesting ideas....
WG - Perfect - Our little secret. Hopefully were on track
Just wanted to clarify my name: Me: "Dal Leon" (Hunter)

i'm gonna run to the bottle shop. that's what they call liquor stores here.
Nice name Leon

YO YO YO WHEREZ U @?
Good Morning!
I wanted to go out last night and D-I-G!!
I am really liking Como for this hunt, but I don't want it to be there...parking can be a nightmare, and with all the events they've got going out there....
Still have a couple runner ups that will probably be proven wrong in the next couple clues.
Gotta work today, but hoping to get out of there early....it would be nice to get to a park in the *daylight*!
Have a super day, all - and happy digging to those of you who are able to get out there!
GUBA
I don't think today's clue says much...do you other people?? allsion, what do you think???
If anyone wants a nice easy to read list of the parks in St. Paul broken down by size you can grab it here (just cut and paste address into browser)---> ftp://hunt:hunt@63.229.205.194/
I went to Rice, Mounds, Highland, MLK, Harriet Isl. and even out by the capitol last night and nothing looked promising.... any ideas on where it is yet?
Nope...no ideas yet. I don't know...this 6th clue is more vague than I had wanted it to be...what do you think?
well well well are we stummped??? were is valley park and why do you think it might be there???
well, well, well, they got you stumped? so were is valley park? and why do you think it's there?? and what other parks are we looking at???
Good Morning! Is anyone still on?
It just took me about 45 minutes to, I believe the work is "slog" through all the messages since midnight.
Looks like Como was a clear winner in last night's discussion. Also some mention of Harriet. Does anyone have a clear take on which might be the stronger choice?
Jokysu..Hidden Falls?
Guideman is on KQ right now.
They're in Como Park. Sounds like several people are digging out there.
Sorry I didn't respond right away, I am chasing a toddler around my house this morning.
What are all the clue matches for Como Park?
Hi all, this last clue really sucks, move off base ????????
One thought for move off base would be NOT on a baseball field.
still sucks
i'd lay 1/2 the medallion on that it is either at phalen or como. i hate como so i'm sticking w/ phalen. i have every clue fitting w/ phalen. yesterday's man of steel is sketchy, but johnson (lyndon b) fills the mettle.
Good Morning folks- is anyone going to Como today?
leah, i'm going to phalen. no one else is online right now.
is move off base another reference to steel?
IT'S F***ING SNOWING OUTSIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
leah i think i'm gonna take a trip to como at lunch. at least there'll be some nice virgin snow to dig :)
It seems like every year we want it to be at Como...but I just don't see it. Doesn't everyone agree that Clue #4 means it's on the East Side or West Side?
Leads me to Mounds Park now (all those "circular" burial mounds) on the East Side.
Haven't posted since the hunt in '98. See you out there!
it's getting interesting - they're saving the exact park for late in the game. Allison, any new noodles? Still thinking Valley?
Good Marning!
As I pulled into the driveway at 3:15 AM... What came on the radideeo, but "Hotel Coolerfornia"!
Ittiz, it was so good to read you! Miss you bunches! Somebuddy slipped my your Medallion!
There was NO buddy out digging last nite; very very few folks. And while #6 still fits Battle Creek...I just don't know... I think the situation's normal: I need to join Bee in The Frog Pond! LOL!!!
just wanted to say hi, it's snowing out!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clue 1 Go through the cold and prepare to be bold, Or you won't find the secret item. Our beloved St. Paul is the place for gold; Dig elsewhere and you'll search ad infinitum.
Last year at Newell our fate was most cruel; Unfortunately the game ended too soon. Come now and prepare for a much tougher duel; Keep on your toes or you'll hunt until June. the first letters of each line spell out "GOOD LUCK." There appears to be something more to the first clue than usual, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Clue 2 There's no need to destroy as you deploy For the hunt in our wonderful town. Golf courses and statues you must not annoy, And please steer clear of all private ground. It's likely that they are just stretching out the obvious clues this year so they get well beyond last year's seven.
Clue 3 Circular thinking can be one way of linking To the treasure that lies out of view. Your bank account won't be shrinking If you can figure out this clue. The first real meaty clue.
Clue 4 East and west are part of our test, Though only one is the proper place. If this choice leaves you depressed, Playing might put a smile on your face.
Clue 5 A man of steel cannot be real, But another has plenty of mettle. Look for his name around our deal, And you'll be in very fine fettle.
To escape the herd find a peaceful bird Somewhere deep in the snow. Our treasure is boxed inside the word, And that's what you need to know.
Clue 6 The prize is at a place with lots of space Where riding around can be fun But you'll have to move off base If you hope to be the victorious one
Can anybody tell me if they would bury this thing at a Community Center?
Paul, like a Rec Center? The Med's been buried at a Rec Center Bee4.
hey everyone, this is my first time in the cooler crew
or should i say the water cooler?LOL
I guess thats the answer I was looking for, thanks green.
Welcome, Pennie! You Digging for The Med?
me to
You Bee very welcome, Paul!!! GOOD LUCK!!!
So someone said something about Phalen why do you think there???
hey green , still leaning how to work this thing but i have been an avid hunter for two years. i have been within five feet of where the darned thin was found two years in a row!!!!!!
Keep at it, Pennie... Oh! And looking for The Med, too! :D
We'll help you thru leaning how to navigate in The Cooler. Ittiz not hard, but can be a titch confusing until you get the hang o'it. And remember... We were all new here once!
I've been close to The Med, but not as close as some here. This izz my 4th year. But it seems like my first. Every year seems like my first! And the first one (Chair-O-Key) seems like it was just last week...
I can't believe we're 1/2-way thru *this* Dig!
I THINK THIS HUNT WILL GO THE DISTANCE!!!!
Ditto, Snake.
morning green..came soooo close the year it was magnetized to the mail box...was on my knees about to search around under the box and some guy said you cant do that it's federal property...it was probably that person that got it..:(
how do i refresh the page to see new msgs after i've posted one ??????
I want to go dig!!!!
Click the last blue message number. You see what I'm talking about, Pennie?
too bad I can't and if I could I don't even know where I would go today
not if i have anything to say about it snake
Hay, Leah!
Pennie, also... Sometimes folks will post while you're typing and you'll miss their post. So, when you think this has happened or you're afraid you may have missed something, go to the top o'the page and hit "Previous Message."
That will give you the entire previous page o'messages. When you get to the bottome o'that page, hit the last blue message number...
Try it!
pimpdaddie are you still here?
by golly i think i got it!!!!!!!!!lol
hey green- where did you end up last night?
Marning, Ares!
To find it, you gotta get out and D-i-g...
the treasure hunters guide was just on kq morning show from como talking about his book
thanks a bunch u guys
I don't see you having any more success, green :)
so.............any body think they know where it is??? 'm picking up a copy of the new hunters guide. i couldn't find one two years ago so i went to the library and took apart theirs and copied the entire thing lolololol. they weren't too happy with me
Ares- did you dig last night?
Welcome, Pennie!
Leah... We hit Battle Creek, then came bock for some more footage o'Rice Park. That was neat... All lit up at 1:00 in the marning and so quiet and beautiful...
Then we went to Como... Like two people there...
Not much going on last nite...
Ares, in addition to not having yet had a shovel in my hand (like, where in all the white to Dig?????????), I'm better off in The Frog Pond, me thinks!!!
Bee4 I can even Dig, I think I should be in the correct park! Tho, I'm still not giving up on Battle Creek yet...
nah, leah. i slept after i got outta here. i'm definitely drivin to como at lunch.
other than a guide a flashlight a shovel and my mind, is there anything else i should keep with me when hunting???
Princess... I wanted to hear Guide so badly, but 7:00 was WAY outta the question since I didn't get to bed until after 4:00 AM.
could someone tell me why I have a mark, edit, and delete under my name and you all just have mark
Maybe I'll pack up my daycare kids and have them go dig around!!!
at least you'll be in the right park, imho, green.
Pennie, your sense o'humor... And a big, friendly smile... And always on your lips...
"You Dig?"
Folks that hang out here will answer you in like, or something similar.
hey shadow, that is so u can edit or deltetur own msgs. u can't do that with anyone elses
Shadow, because your message is not yet 1/2-hour old and you can edit or delete it until then.
Ares! You Doofus! If you think Battle Creek, why going to Como!!!:>
thanks green. whenr u going to hunt???????
Thank you Pennie :)
welcome shadow;-)
who said battle creek, green?
where did shadow come from, ru dangerous???lol
Pennie, I don't know yet. A documentary company is filming a doc on The Cooler Crew. I'm usually with them... Holding tri-pods, getting stuff outta the car(s), holding some white thing to reflect the sun, holding a mic...
They're going to be oot and a'boot later today...
Where will you be? I'll see if they'll look you up.
Good morning - Hope you all slepted well
Green - I hope I don't get into trouble for spending so much time on the net at work..
I think Como is to easy and they are trying to mislead us..
Ride a train, sled, Bus, wave, bike, horse, tortise, car, airplane, skateboard, swing, teetertotter, ...hrlp me out what else can you ride
Ride a boat, an amusement ride..
Oh not at all Pennie. I've been hunting since the second year with my mom until 1968, when she died and now I continue on with my family..havent missed a year.
Uhhh... I guess the aliens made me think you thought BC was the one to Bee in... Sorry, Ares.
not sure , i know i'll be out this weekend. i 've gotta get that new guide today. my one a and only client canceled on me so iv'e got a littlte time to drive around and look at the parks during the day u know?
now that we've got that mess cleaned up, green, the first thing i thought of was riding the human-powered boats out on the lake.
New Daddy... Me thinks they'd Shirley understand the obession with The Hunt! LOL!!! Get what you have to get done and get outta there! HURRY! Gotta find The Med!
That's the way to do it, Pennie... Scope those parks!
Could circular and something you ride be a merry-go-round? ie: Como midway area, is State Fair grounds out....
meant ur nickname, lolol shadow is a little different. may ur mom rest in peace and it's great that u carry on the tradition. i've only been hunting since 99, when i got my first carlolol
Green were you @ Valley last evening filming by chance?
I honestly don't think they've given the actual park yet. I think they've narrowed it down to a couple big ones but really at this point I think they've more focused on clues inside the park as to the location of the prize.
I'm thinking a rather big park that includes: a statue of a courageous man, bike paths, softball diamonds, big playground on either the west or east side of the park....anyone else on this track?
South... The Fair Grounds was out, what? Three days ago? If you'd slog...........
Jeez-Laweez!
I honestly don't think they've given the actual park yet. I think they've narrowed it down to a couple big ones but really at this point I think they've more focused on clues inside the park as to the location of the prize.

Ride on superman's shoulders. or maybee clark kents shouldersHAHAHA Ride out a storm..
Leah, not that I know of.
ND where did you go dig last night
Tornado, sounds good to me. I think you've hit the hi-lights.
Good point Tornado! I think we are putting to much into the actual park.... seems to me that MOM is gonna leave us hanging on that info.
Thanks again,Pennie. Good luck to you in the hunt. Got the shovels all packed and I'm headin out. This snow isnt helping any..hope to see you out digging!
Joe!
does anyone know if any the parks still have those old metal merry go rounds anymore?
Thanks, green.; been busy with sick kids, so I am on and off Cooler and may have missed some postings.....
I used to LOVE those merry-go-rounds! Now they'd make me ill!
phalen's playground might still have one, leah.
are there any around anymore? I haven't seen one in a long time
prolly thought too dangerous anymore
Hey...what about the pony ride that is at Como??? any thoughts?
Good morning everyone! I've arrived at work nice and late. What's the buzz today. Scoped out a bunch of parks last night and quess what...the gates were left open at Phalen. Hmmmmm
There are several parks with merrygo round type things.. prosperity has one
LL I dug at several parks Beaver lake, come, valley, marydale, Iris phalen prospect, I uaually do a close drive bye and thing dig for 5 mns early in the hiunt to get in diggin shape..
I like your thinking Tornado
There were people at Newell this morning..
If anyone wants a nice easy to read list of the parks in St. Paul broken down by size you can grab it here (just cut and paste address into browser) ftp://hunt:hunt@63.229.205.194
Hello Hunters!
Here are my thoughts, for what it's worth. Is it possible that the Medallion is Valley Park. I Know that VP is in Roseville, but the rules state that "The Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion is hidden on public land in Ramsey county. Here's why I think it's Valley Park.
1. In clue #2 thre therence to "circular" only refers to the fact that the medallion is round. The rest is just garbage to throw us off.
2. Clue #3 talks about East & West, just more more stuff to confuse people. The Important bit from this clue is the word "depressed". A valley is a depression.
3. The "man of steel" refernece in clue #5 is definitely a rereference to Superman. One of the actors who played Superman was Christopher Reeves. We know he "mettle", just look at all he has gone through, talk about courage! Christopher Lane, is located at the NW corner of Valley Park. Clue #5 also tells us NW that the medallion is hidden in a Dove Bar ice cream box. referring to the "peaceful bird" and "boxed" inside.
As for today's clue, I'm still figuring out how to make it work with Valley Park. I'm not too farmiliar with the Roseville area. Can anyone see how today's clue helps?
Thanks Jazz
South, sorry to hear about the kids. Yes, I could see where that would keep you from being able to go thru 8XX posts!!!
Nensea, what time was this? The gates open at Phalen?
do you need a login and paasword?
Clue 1 clearly states that it's hidden in St. Paul proper, not greater Ramsey county
do you need a login and paasword?
This time last year my husband was out at Newell digging. As a matter of fact, he was at Newell on Thursday morning with only about 4-5 other people digging. Not that that matters much since he didn't find it, but the clue writer(s)are definitely making this year a lot harder. Unfortunately, if they don't start becoming more clearer on their clues, we're still going to be guessing into next week and there just may (may) be a year it's not found. That would be a sad, sad day in medallion history. I want so much to be digging tomorrow with the confidence that I'm at least in the right park. Much sorrow is in this digger's thoughts.
do you need a login and paasword?
It'll be found, Digger, have no fear
Hey Duck- Valley is DT STP
I agree TD....still many possible answers...AHHHHHHHh
I've been sloggin so much thoughts around that I'm at the point of thinking it just might be at the PP office, in the receptionist's desk, inside of a Dove soap box.
Leah! According to the "freinds of the parks", www.friendsoftheparks.org/valleypark.htm, it's in Roseville.
Nansea, what time did you see the gates open at Phalen? What time did you drive by?
lol...that wouldn't surprise me!
The Valley I know of and went to is on Jackson & Uni next to Franklin Magnet
"The prize is at a place with lots of space" - lots of space = UNIVERSE = UNIVERSITY AVE
Green, I was there about 10:00 pm. It seems to me they usually close at dark.
SUre Pryzmsphere, Not many big parks what do people make of this line A man of steel cannot be real But another has plenty of mettle Look for his name around our deal And you'll be in very fine fettle
looking for a statue of a courageous man, or a street name? any ideas, this seems to be the main helper for which park so far. At least i think.
Thanks, Nensea.
Jazz, I thought steel = McKnight, which divides Battle Creek into its east and west portions. Man o'mettle - Larry Po, twice mayor o'St. Paul and writer for St. Paul Press-Dispatch, or whatever it was bock then.
Also, deal backwards is "lead" which a newspaper man would follow.
mncheeta how do you ride around the universe??
Fumduck,
Have you read clue 1?
Fats
Valley Park is probably in Roseville
Valley Rec is in St Paul.
Fats! I see now the "Our beloved St.paul" I guess my name fits!
deal can also be dale?
"The prize is at a place with lots of space" "Where riding around can be fun"
These 2 lines do not necessarily have to relate to eachother - it could be a play on words. But to answer your question New Daddy, with a space shuttle I would assume.
What if the Medallion is actually on a lake "lots of space", where "riding around" would be the bike paths.
I read "lots of space" as not only in the terms of area, but also as "empty" space.
"off base" could mean "off the park" and on the lake.
Fats
Could "lots of space" be a parking lot?
Cheetah - I like your University/Lots of Space thing! Maybe the place where you ride around is just NEAR Univ. ave.
Maybe Valley still fits. Haven't gone over there yet.
They would never put it on a lake
Nensea, I seriously doubt it. They're usually plowed...
The parking lot thing is good too - so many good ideas!!
near a parking lot, prolly, not IN one
Snake,
Prove it.
Fats
Pretend the metal type statue clue is accurate, can anyone help me with some known statues in a large park?
green- I heard there are two merry go round at Battle Creak, one on the school playgroung, and one by the the rec center
well if it's on a lake then you guys can have the damn thing- I don't need it that bad
Happy Hunting
lol....I'll have to agree with Leah....NO WAY AM I GOING SWIMMIN WITH THE FISH!
IN 1959 3 people went through the ice at como.(2 died)
Ahhh...It's winter time.....the water is actually frozen.
If they put it on the lake, there's always the small chance someone would fall throuth the ice. I don't think they would take that chance!
Snake,
In 1959 it wasn't at Como...it was at Warner Road – under a tree.
Good try though.....
Fats
Tim, yeah, I still think Battle Creek is in the running... But nobuddy was there last nite.
I learned last year when you're alone in a park all by yourself it usually means you're in the wrong park! LOL!!!
I've not given up on BC yet... But I just don't know...
who cares about winter time- I sure don't ant to be standing on ice that thousands of people are digging and chipping at!!
Pretend the metal type statue clue is accurate, can anyone help me with some known statues in a large park?
Did you know they have car racing on the ice? This is sponsored by the Winter Carnival.
JOE
Yes Fats I know that - but that doesn't mean you'll find me there
Jeez-Laweez, Fats! You get up on the wrong side o'the bed today?
All you say is true; folks are just voicing their opinions, as you're free to do.
I, too, wouldn't ever venture out on a lake. Those race drivers, I'll bet you dollars to do-nuts - HAVE to sign a release Bee4 they can race. I think asking folks to sign a waiver o'some sort Bee4 venturing out on a lake where The Med was hid would be a wee bit of a DEAD give away. (Pun intended... LOL!!!)
my life....ten G...my life....ten G...hmmm
Not to get in the middle of this debate, but I will anyway....they only have car racing on the lake if the ice is thick enough and the conditions are OK. The people who write this don't control the weather, and the people hunting, so they have no idea whether the ice will be safe or not. It's just not gonna be on the ice, unless it's ice on land like a rink.
Morning Crew! FINALLY caught up on sloggin! And my 2 cents--- I AIN'T GOIN ON NO LAKE, NEITHER! :) Ya all can have it! :) lololol
green- my mom has had a lot of calls asking about digging at her school(BC elementary). they like the merry go rounds.
fat- it doesnt have to be there to have people looking there, or have someone fall through the ice. nice try though
Funny Shiat Green, I'm wit ya there.
Going back to bed....so I can wake up on the right side. See ya in a bit.
Fats
adios
at marrydale last night, there were DANGER THIN ICE signs all around loeb lake. gee, it sure would be bold to ignore those signs and go on the ice anyway.
you should have been bold tim and went
Think Fats really wants to ice fish
PioneerPlanet Water Cooler
