Hey, if they posted everywhere that the 3rd clue was wrong, it must be important. So if you do that linking thing, it spells CITY. That leads me away from phalen from now
Maybe the clue writer is REALLY mad? Maybe they were thinking, "I'll give em a tiny park with no parking and lots of interference in a bad neighborhood and then we'll see how fast they finish this hunt"?
Midway
Allison, MAD MAD MAD
Linking could also be Marydale park as it is from Maryland Street...and Dale street so linking together it is Marydale.....
do you think the pioneer press would want to make the hunt a bad experience for us
and you Dig?
frog town
they must have been pissed Allison
too much thinking. too much thinking. too much thinking.
Honestly I don't know what the PP wants. All I know is that the clues all seem to fit there better than anywhere else. So until I see something that makes me think that place is not plausible, I'm going to think its there. If you want to dig somewhere else, feel free.
Allison- uh huh.
Tim...any ideas?
well I'm going to Valley - I've trusted in for the last 3 years I've been in this cooler and you've always been right
the fact that there is a lot of Asian gang activity in that area (valley) I can't see them putting there
I like marydale. I like BC. I like valley. MLK? Palace?
I still like eastview rec.lol
well I hope I'm still alive when they finally put it at Palace
On your next message write:
111 if you think its at the Capitol
222 if you think its at Maryale
333 if you think its at valley rec
444 if you think its anywhere else
Whatmakes Palace sogreat? And where the heck is Palace?!
How could east and west possibly relate to Marydale?
111
???
333 Why not just one three?
I was thinking the east or west side of loeb lake.
444 I might even step out of warm buildings tonight to shift some snow.
Palace is on the West End- but since I was 4 I've thought it was there every year- we used to go look for the med when it wasn't even Carnival time
yeah, they always fit at palace. I found that out in 99. Jefferson St. sheesh!
I Got a better one! where do you think it is 1 Captol 2 Marydale 3 Valley 4 Palace 5 eastview 6 MLK 7 Hidden Falls 8 Phalen 9 Somewhere Else 0 Undecided

I came to a definte decision about the meaning of the first part of clue five. I'm sure that man of steel is a ref. to superman because he isn't real ("man of steel cannot be real"). The "another" which can be real and has "plenty of mettle" is a refference to a REAL man of steel, a Steel Tycoon, who's name is somewhere around the medallion. This is either Andrew Carnegie or James Hill. I believe it is a James J. Hill reference, as Hill is a St.Paul native, but I haven't checked out the maps yet to cross refference Caregie with any parks. So the clue could be simply stating that the medallion is near a hill, or the reference to hill could be the James Hill memorial library in St. Paul.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9...
Erm. Why do you have to put numbers?
my vote is to stop with all the annoying numbers. . . but it's a free country . . .

Great Stuff!!
SUPERMAN... AKA CLARK KENT.. KENT AVE... MARYDALE... #2!!!
Regalman, are you sure the medalion isn't at Newall againg this year?
Well stallion, the hole in your theory (hehe) is that mettle doesn't mean metal, and thus there's no reason to necessarily assume they mean a steel baron.
whos going where?
Aw,
Then you can not presume a magnet.....
Fats
If "man of steel" really does refer to Superman, then the man with a lot of mettle would also have to be some sort of hero or have something in common with Superman in order to invite the comparison.
Ah, but I can, because I'm playing on a pun, rather than a literal interpretation.
Allison Wonderland is Allison right again!
I think many of you are reading far too much into these early clues. Remember, only 1-2 revelations per clue are the norm. Good luck digging and let us know if you've made the cooler proud by finding that darn med.
Aw,
That does not seem to follow logic.
Ftas.
Alison, "another" is the link. The clue would be more properly state as "One man of steel . . ." but that would have made it to obvious. It is "another man of steel, but one that is real as opposed to not fictional (which is why I don't think the Clark Kent reference works) and BOTH Carnegie AND Hill have mettle and perseverance for being so successful despite the odds during the deppression
SUPERMAN... AKA CLARK KENT.. KENT AVE... MARYDALE!
The whole gist of clue #5 is that the two men have one thing in common, and one thing that is different. The thing that is different, is that while one is a man of steel, the other is a man of mettle, which is the joke of it. But first they have to have something in common. In my argument, I say what they have in common is the name Franklin. The problem with with Clark Kent is that he is more real than Superman as he is in fact Superman and thus also a man of steel.
AW -
In comparison to Superman. Superman is a super hero. A super hero with super powers. Clark Kent is an alter identity, however, still a person with super powers. Same as Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, and the reset of the MC and Superfriends bunch. The only Super hero without super powers is Batman. He only has his utility belt, and is in all other superhero ideals, a common man. A BRAVE common man.
Batman = Adam WEST. The park is a WESTern Park. Highland, Hidden Falls, Crosby . . .
Too Much?????
phalen rec center is a good bet...lots of areas around but apart from private property...and dont they have winter carnival car races circling around the lake
Stalion- I thought Hill was a RailRoad Baron. Where do you get steel from? (besides the fact that rails are steel) I would hardly call him a steel man...
also thought of adam west snowball
Heh, there's a significant set of parks you people are missing, see if you can find them. :) (*hint* East and West are quite a factor)
I'm sorry to have to dissagree with you again Allison, but what is different is NOT that one is a man of steel while the other isn't. They are BOTH men of steel, the difference is that one is real while the other had plenty of mettle. But the general gist of you interpretation is right on.
Phalen is a park not a rec center
aw- can you plug that theory into valley for me?
regg man phalen rec and phalen park they are different things
Snoball, yes, a little to far.
Way too far, IMHO, Snowball
these clues aren't that early, folks. Tonight is the half way point!
Yes, Hill was a Rail man. But rail is, in my mind, a steel business. Hill was responsible for almost all the rail laid in the midwest. It's mostly his local rep. that would make me think the reference is to him. But again, it could be Carnegie . . .
SueBee -
What is IMHO?
I was also under the impression that Hill was a railroad baron, not a steel one. But the real person is the person of mettle, not steel.
Tim, my Valley interpretation is that "Franklin Magnet" might be thought of as a man of steel, but he's not real, though Benjamin Franklin has plenty of mettle. The idea being that Franklin Magnet School is part of Valley. It might work better with "Franklin Steel" instead of "Franklin Magnet" though.
I betcha we'll get the park pinned tonight or tomorrow night - especially if it's a bigger park. They have to use the next bunch to narrow down the exact location
medalionstalion, go back to your stable
I believe Hill was more of a railroad tycoon, namely the Pacific Railroad. Carnegie was the steel guy, Rockefeller was oil, and JP Morgan was banking. Are you sure the men of mettle and steel aren't statues?
Snowball, IMHO means "in my humble opinion"
Allison, if you are correct in your theory, then they would have pinpointed the park in clue 5. Do you think they would do that? It's another reason I don't quite buy it. Clever though, I have to admit.
What is the earliest clue it has been found on? 7? I'm, sure they plan to take it past there. Tonight will hopefully pin the park (it won't be small - too easy) and then we'll spend the next 3-4 days digging up the entire blasted place. Yes?
Sue,
I think they may have given us locations in the park already, and since they fit so many parks we are still lost. I think the park will be Monday, and we will have to work back through the clues to find the location IN the park.
That whole thing of making this year impossible.
I think they're saying the man of mettle is not a man of steel.
Actually, what bothers me more than anything about this vclue that no one has addressed is the phrase "around our deal".
in the general area of the rec center (didnt mean in the rec center) the hockey rink (dueling contest)..the car racing..another contest...football baseball all dueling contest and games you play
perhaps
VALLEY - Andrew Jackson(Street) in famous duel with Charles(St. 1 block from Valley) Dickenson(sp?) Jackson was shot first in the chest. He then shot and killed Dickenson. The bullet was never removed from Jackson's chest(39 more years).
"Franklin" D Roosevelt served as president during the depression and the war, and from a wheel chair - Mettle?
The front entrance to Franklin Elementary says " Music School" - thus a different read on "playing might put a smile on your face."
just a little rotini.
after the 5th clue, bc, 95
Just a thought
Around our deal = just something to rhyme with "deal"
AND REGG MAN: thanks for the advice, but I like it just where I am. If you don't like the opinion, then don't follow it.
I think they are referring to the statues at the capitol!
Here's the scoop on the mardi gras thing: Don't miss these special give-a-way nights!
1. Mardi Gras Night - Thursday, January 25, 11 p.m. to midnight in the Pioneer Press lobby Come in costume! Meet radio personalities from WLOL and be entertained by the Klondike Kates. Register to win a pair of round-trip airline tickets, courtesy of Sun Country Airlines
I think they did give us the park location, but didn't believe anyone would figure it out, or if they did, that they wouldn't just keep it to themselves. If I hadn't said Valley, I don't think anyone else would have either yet. It seems I've been the only one making a case for it and some others have just followed along.
Allison - good point as a 'deal' can also be "wood or board of fir or pine"
Snowball - now you've almost got me believing your idea
If it is in a park.....
OK Alison, but they narrowed the park down to early LAST year thinking that no one would get it. And this year they specifically state that it would be harder. I'm not trying to harp on ya, but I just want you to understand why I think you're wrong on this one. I don't want my friends freezing thier butts off in the wrong park!
Can the med be hidden on a blvd connected to the park?
yeppers, Allison. I didn't even know Valley existed.
Allison and Semper Fi have good points, but the medallion hunt attracts families. Would they put it in the ghetto?
the medallion can be hidden on public ground anywhere in St. Paul, so boulevards are fair game
I'd love to stick around, but I'm at work and need to get back to what I should really be doing. I'll slog through the rest later on if anyone wants to leave me a parting shot . . .
ElseaMae -
Didn't mean to confuse, just some over anxious noodling. I am still with MN Fats on NO DECRILATION THAT IT IS IN A PARK.
Still Confused?????
Hey who had to talk you into going to Newell last year? hehe. I really think they thought they were hoinh to misdirect people to the edges of town instead of the middle with the east-west clue. And I think they believed everyone would assume the man of steel was Superman and get caught up looking for Clarks and Kents. And even now, Valley is hardly a concensus. I don't think there will be hundreds of diggers out there tomorrow, no matter what I say. Yet I still believe its there.
Is there any any any way it is at Rice Park or by the cathedral/Hill house?
Snowball- I never said I was confused. I'm honestly actually less confused than I was. No need for caps. : )
Please someone agree that just because they have NOT said park doesn't mean that it isn't? I really can't believe how fine a line it is we cut over that issue. Of course that is just my take.
We are all entitled to our own!
I think the line 'around our Deal' could refer to FDR's "New Deal"?
I agree with Allison that all the clues point there, but I've got the strong feeling that Valley is a red herring like Como was in 1996.
As for being in a "ghetto" (can't say I really noticed) I don't know what they were thinking, but unless somewhere else fits the clues better, I'm not going to try and make assumptions about their mindset.
ElseaMae -
Sorry. Caps were for my frustration, not intended for you. And I am still confused.
Hi All! I'm new and I have a few questions. Where is Valley? I've never heard of it and I've lived in St. Paul my whole life. Is there a bust/statue of a fireman in a park somewhere? Maybe at Mary dale?
PS-Semper Fi-Jackson removed the bullet himself with a pen-knife years later :)
has anyone struck on this possibility?..."man of steel" = Knight,as in the old warriors. They had plenty of mettle(courage). McKnight runs right by a small portion of BCP...as far as the other clues go...I am dumbfounded....
I really don't think its at Rice Park. Far too many issues going on there right now with the construction going on.
As for the park thing, I don't consider it a guarantee. They've hidden it in parks before and not used the word park. But not seeing it certainly does make you wonder if it was omitted for a reason, and I consider it a worthwhile, though maybe not definitive clue.
As for being a red herring, Valley as a red herring? Most people have never even heard of it. Personally I think Batlle Creek is the red herring with all the war references and the talk about east and west.
Fourfold - the BC idea was kicked around earlier. I think it fits many of the clues, but don't know where the circular reference fits
I am going out to dig shortly..just need to slog a few posts and I will be going out!
Valley is on University and Jackson (flashbacks to two years ago when I had to keep telling people where Conway was).
Some people have suggested knights for clue 5, but I get the feeling they are talking about a specific person rather than a group of people.
Battle Creek could easily be a red herring
Well good luck to all the Cooler Heads....The wife and I are off to find our 15 minutes....I'll report back later with what I find at BC...might stop at Valley just to see if anything clicks...
I have a problem with the close proximity of the school and children to valley, if it heats up there they can not have an army of diggers surrounding the school during school hours
FYI, the film crew will be out at Valley tonight at 6 or so, at least for a while.
East& West streets in St. Paul are sepeseparated by ST. PETER & Market @Rice park;Hill street is below it.
park is depressed MARKET- Playing the market might put a smile Man of mettle - hill or St. peter? Why did they say not to bother statues?- Ice sculptures?
Good point Alan...major distraction for the little scholars...
adios, see yas in da parks.
Has the medallion ever been found at night?
It was found around midnight in '93 when it was in Hidden Falls
in a new baby diaper
that was the first year I actually went digging. I'd read the clues before that, but never tried to find it. Now I'm hooked.
I'm not nearly as diehard as some of these folks, tho
well, I'm outta here. see ya later!
Got to go - LOL all!!!!
Yes Sue some are die hard its hard work diggin up all that snow
I have a crew of diggers, I do all the thinking
Does anyone know how to dig up past years clues and explanations....I thought the PP did it but can't find them?
I have never lifted a hand to shovel and I have found the thing about 20 times
I wasn't sure of Conway until clue #8 and I wasn't sure of Newell until #7, and after 5 clues, I'm not sure of Valley, but I do feel confident. Time will tell though. Otherwise its about time for me to get out of here. Not sure when I'll be back on so good luck everyone, maybe see some of you tonight.
Go to www.coolercrew.com
The cooler crew sight has past clues and some explainations
I still think you are in the wrong park AW....but good luck anyways!
Has anybody checked out Swede Hollow park? Does it have a playground or ballfields?
How would the Re-Hash Bash go over in "the Ghetto" ???
Swede Hollow has nothing but a biking/walking path. It is a park only in the sense that it is open space! It's not Swede Hollow--it has very few features that could point you there, and if PP gave any of those out, those who have been there even once would pick them up!
joe
so you guys think como is still an option
found a few guys today who had been at swede hollow. they said the steps were all closed and they looked around, but there is no way it was going to be there. they dug up one circular area.
Barbie--como is so big, that you could fit these 5 clues into it, so many of us like to search smaller parks/rec centers first, because they seem excavatable and have a greater chance of stumbling on the thing by accident.
My site also has past clues and definitions
good point I spent some of my time there yesterday I think its still too early too much snow to dig under
thanks alan...I found em
Just a thought, but the dictonary says that mettle is sand or gravel in a fireplace. CIRCULAR fireplace, with mettle on the bottom. Any thoughts or just a random noodle?
Do you think that the medallion is definately in St. Paul. If larpentuer is the Cut off from maplewood to st. paul that runs through phalen. could the medallion be in the north side of phalen or are we thinking it is definately in st. paul proper?
has anyone thaught of any parks downntown "around our deal"??
Do you think that the medallion is definately in St. Paul. If larpentuer is the Cut off from maplewood to st. paul that runs through phalen. could the medallion be in the north side of phalen or are we thinking it is definately in st. paul proper?
Rice park?
lelej--none of the clues corresponds to Downtown in my mind. Rice is fenced off for carnival activities. It is very unlikely PP or St. Paul wants a lot of digging there. We're talking serious fencing. I dig Kellogg every year, but it's just me, I view the park below my window, and the fever hasn't struck anyone else. Mears has no connection to these clues, that I can tell. It maybe in a park on the periphery of downtown, or that has a view of downtown, so if you need downtown to fit your interpretation of the clues, I would take it in that direction!
I was also at Swede Hollow last night...Highly improbable....too treacherous to get to with the closed stairs and the extreme hills....
Parks near or with view of downtown: Irvine, Boyd, Valley rec center, Mounds, Harriet, Cherokee, Nathan Hale, Swede Hollow--my guide is at home, so that's the best I can do from memory,
hey guys what was the deal with this HILL guy,
hey AW I'm heading over there in about 30-45 minutes are you still going?
where are u going leah
valley
Good Luck
I was at Valley today. The kids were out for recess. They wouldn't even let me park there so I had to leave. Why would they hide it there and take the risk of strangers being around children? Also why would they hide it somewhere you really didn't have access to during the day? Just wondering cause I think the clues match too?
I agree with you nildear. Stop the Valley theories.
Sunny if you go to the North part of Phalen in Maplewood, and you'll be sitting in a court room most likely being sued by maplewood
Well, some of us are heading to Valley at 6-7pm tonight to look. I am sure more of us will be there tonight than last night. See you there! I will be with Allison
How bout around the cathedral/Hill house, there is a mulberry st up there.(circular way of thinking.) BELOVED St Paul Man of Medal?
I like your idea google...but I don't know. Do the other clues fit? Is Hidden Falls out of the running now?
Its a really good point about the kids. When I was younger we used to search our playground (NW Como) thoughly ever year. I don't think its going to be at a Rec Center/school playground. Maybe a non-school Rec Center, even then I doubt it.
I was at valley last night around 10:00. It was very quiet. A man did come out of the school and asked us what were doing out there, when we told him his response was "OH...do the clues lead you here? Hmmm..." Then he just went in his car and drove away then as we were leaving he was pulling back into the parking lot.
Does anyone have a solid theory on "Circular Thinking"? In my opinion it is a big part of the hunt. at first i thought a circular library or school, but i'm not sure
nildear and TheTreasureHunter'sGuide thank's for that, i've been trying to tell these guys it's not at valley
I like Iris more than Valley and its not even going to be at Iris.
I love the posts that talk about Maplewood.
I just don't see it, why would they put it at valley, it makes no sense.
Anyone been to Newell? Is it quiet over that way? How about Hidden Falls?
Quiet at Hidden.
Ok...how about Newell?
StepDogg have you concidered the Carousel Restaurant?
Hi All!
I also don't believe the Valley Rec theory. There are a couple of things that were stated could be seen from there that I don't believe are actually visible. The gold horses for one are on the other side of the capital. There is almost no parking and there are tons of kids that use the rec center for an after school program and the kids that attend Franklin Magnet.
StepDogg have you concidered the Carousel Restaurant?
Could clue 4 be talking about the game of bridge, therefore be telling us it is on either side of a bridge??? (I dont know much of bridge but in paper they are labeled East West North & South?)
StepDogg have you concidered the Carousel Restaurant?
John and Lori....I haven't, but interesting. So would you think Kellog then?
Amen Terr. Lets channel our energies on other parks.
All the clues seem to fit Valley... and where else? Is this what I am hearing? Well, I need to run...
I have at least until the next clue found a park that seems to fit everything depending on how one interprets the clues. And I think one doesn't have to stretch anything and just take the clues at their more obvious meaning.
The clues can fit anywhere if you let your imagination run amok.
Hello again Terry---Am I following you?
Hey Ian!
I am very new at this and I am sorry for all the reprints. Yes I do think there's a chance. Saturn Riverfront Academy is right across the street. The Salvation ARMY has the lighted kettle there. There's more but I am running out the door to get my kids to a school thing. I'll be back later.
Boy, I hope no one is actually using a shovel yet.
We were at Gillette's/Regions yesterday-never thought about looking at Valley

I did see shoveling going on today when I went to check out a few things.

Hi Ian, Steve, Terry
Big Park, lots of digging.
John and Lori - instead of hitting refresh, click on the blue number next to the poster's name. That will bring the newer posts up and will avoid the echoing of your posts.
Hey Maureen! You guys digging yet?
Thanks Terry...I feel so dumb!
East and West just tells me to pick one side of the city to focus on.
Man of Mettle makes me think of a name...perhaps a street name near the park.
I won't let myself read any deeper into the clues, especially the first two.
Don't feel dumb - look how quickly you learn!
East and West can be two directions a connecting road can flow in...not necessarily which side of the city.
No, Not yet! Waiting
Hi Maureen!
Maureen found it in 1998 at Cherokee Park, with her brother Steve. They were the last finders to have a registered button.
Could medaillion be around rice park?
Hi Maureen
Steve, do you believe the spotter theory?
I don't know..I tend to doubt it.
So the finder probably has a few hours to find clues/someone with a registered button?
Where is everyone looking, At first i was thinking of Hidden Falls, and the circular thinking you can spell out CITY by drawing a cirlce and Hidden Falls links St Paul And Minneapolis together and in one of the clues its says its out of sight aka hidden
Many people from my job headed out to the Capitol Mall. I'm not sure why, something about the statues and Jesse the body is strong and real.
I never understand why an unregistered doesn't seek out a nice looking person to share the additional money?
has anyone been thinking if it could be harriet island park
Ok I'm new at this Hole water Cooler thing! Me and my mom sit here every night and read what everybody writes. Our I should say type=) LOL. I just finally figured out how to post Messages. We went down to Irving Park last night (I think thats how ya spell it) There was a street name that ran right threw it called Ryan Street. That street Runs east and West. Ryan (ron) he could be considered a Man of steel for his brave ways! anybody ever thought of that?
Everyone is thinking everything from best I can tell.
A nice looking registered hunter that is.

Hey.....does anyone know the phone number you call to see if the meddalion has been found? I called the PP today to get it and they didn't have a clue as to what the # was. They DID tell me that it hadn't been found yet. LOL

Maybe crazy there is a sping st down there-cicular in clue3?
Gillette childrens hospital used to be located at phalen. that was the original hospital for crippled children.
Steve,
I hope you carry books in car this year!
And oh yes I forgot. The street that goes around that park is a circle. goes round and round. and there is a big Round like Pit thing in the middle of the park. Its a really small park

Is there a Gilette co. on Market st. ?
Coming in in the middle of all this.....There is a Gillette in Lowertown.
Yes. THere is also a farmers market right down the street.
what does everyone think about todays clue as far as the bird thing and the box part, what does everyone think about that it is in a ice cream dove box
Where?
5th & Market I do believe, can't say Market for sure. But it is right across from the Farmers Market.
Been a long day!
Time to go home. Catch ya all later
Take 5th street all the way down till it ends. If your on 7th and highway 52 its that big huge building
Lowertown?
the bird clue seems to point to either a dove icecream bar box or else a box from a bar of dove soap. to me it is too obvious though. maybe not if tomorrow they start pointing us towards the right park instead of the location w/in the park.
Nobody liked my Irving park Idea? *pouts* LOL
Where is lowertown? It's on the East side of DT.
Hi. I've been unable to get on for a couple of days, but I'm really curious as to what the last two clues are pointing to. Can someone give me an index to a wrap-up discussion?
See ya out there tonight...
Actually I was thinking of Irving Pk today.
sunny, what do you think about harriet island park
YEAH! Im not the only one. That makes me feel good!
What is on corner of 5 And Market?
A Farmers Market I do believe
thinker, i'm set on either phalen, hidden falls, or highland still
