Whatever! People who know me know! We seem to have a few who don't deserve to believe it's the real deal! Fine go to the P.P. yourselves or wait it out,I don't care! Won't you feel stupid!!!!!!
leaves?, geroge reeves (superman from 50s), george street, cherokee?
well, now that we know what it's in, they're probably making some reference to superman, but, who do we have that was once a steel tycoon? andrew carnegie, who built (or funded) many of the libraries around here (arlington hills comes to mind),
thanks scribe.
Here's the definition for mettle: spirit, courage or fortitude - *on one's mettle* - determined to do one's best in response to some challenge. variation of metal
OK chew on this:
Again we are seeing a number of words that may have alternate/double meaning considering how you spell and pronounce them. Mettle/Meddle/Metal/Medal. I'd be careful about too much Superman stuff just yet.
I was thinking the same thing on Olympics ther is a sculpture of him to be done in rice park
wheres Marydale park?
maryland and dale
T-Bell are you in here?
A man of steel cannot be real but another has plenty of mettle
Look for his name around our deal and you'll be in very fine fettle
To escape the herd find a peaceful bird somewhere deep in the snow
Our treasure is boxed inside the word and thats what you need to know
well, i have my parks all planned out. Violent J, where are you going? maybe we'll meet up somewhere?
A sculpture of who will be in Rice Park?
I just repasted it...I hope its real...
I think this points to a specific park or rec center not whats in there......
truth, justice, american way
I dont know his name off hand but the guy who one gold from minnesota
martin lurther rec, nahhhhh
honestly, don't recall any statues at marydale
this one does work for the capital. john ireland - mettle- high quality of character....just the oppisite of joemedalion
How about Henry Ford????
Hidden in a Dove Bar
Seems early for this clue
Tom Malchow?
scribe, if they can't handle the clue, we'll ignore them. i for one will trust it.
Maybe a statue of George W.
The man of mettle could be Martin Luther King, Jr. That rec center/park hasn't been home to the med in the past - but I'm thinking the clues could fit there pretty easy.
Mettle or Medal.....circular and linking. Olympic references???
Thanks Ares!Don't you think I'd be a little scared to post the wrong clue now that most of you know who I am????
YIKES!!!
Ok, noodle this. In a previous clue, they said' "wonderful town" that could be reference to Maryland Ave. (Merry Land) If so, we have the intercection; Kent and Maryland.
Clue No. 4: (I guess we can all assume its nowhere downtown, because it deosn't lie anywhere East/West. I think the word Playing in the clue references the playground where the tire swing is at.)
thanks for listining terry
Arent there some special olympics going on? I'll dig around here.
Hey...I'm not doubting...it just seems like this is a clue that would get us to the park to quickly...could the writers be messing with us all!!!
GOldenBoy I like your noodle. Where are you going with it??
yeah, and maybe we WONT run into eachother Crappy
Mac, humor me for a second, what could the east/west thing be at marydale??
The writers are telling us where to look inside of the park... they would never give the park name away this quickly!
Clue No. 3: (I'm thinking if you find a tire swing, the treasure is just out of view. Circular Thinking and linking=tire swing. Also keep an eye out for banks nearby.)
Circular thinking can be one way of * linking To the treasure that lies out of view. Your bank account won't be shrinking If you can figure out this clue.
Clue No. 4: (I guess we can all assume its nowhere downtown, because it deosn't lie anywhere East/West. I think the word Playing in the clue references the playground where the tire swing is at.)
East and west are part of our test Though only one is the proper place If this choice leaves you depressed Playing might put a smile on your face
malchow was from st. paul? and did he not win a medal? and....and....
I am thinking rice or somewhere real close Tom malchow carving mettle medal?
Herb Brooks, Olympic hockey coach???
mgm, and marydale ain't that big of a park if kent is the reference.
grrrr they havent put it up yet
I'm not familiar w/ marydale
Herb Brooks was an east-sider.
Seems SO early to be so blunt about what it is hidden in (either a Dove ice cream box or Dove soapbox), doesn't it?
A man of steel cannot be real But another has plenty of mettle Look for his name around our deal And you'll be in very fine fettle To escape the herd find a peaceful bird Somewhere deep in the snow Our treasure is boxed inside the word And that's what you need to know
its official
east/west side of loeb lake?
This is telling us its not an olympian, but someone that has spirit and determination
" A man of steel cannot be real but another has plenty of mettle "
my take on this is that combined with the dove wrapper it's in (candy bar or soap package, take your pick), any reference to superman gives way too much away for this stage in the hunt.
Straight from the PP website...
A man of steel cannot be real But another has plenty of mettle Look for his name around our deal And you'll be in very fine fettle
To escape the herd find a peaceful bird Somewhere deep in the snow Our treasure is boxed inside the word And that's what you need to know
At Marydale, there's a jungle gym, swings and a bench swing
Ok, I'm going to bed. Can't stay up late every night. I have the explanation on my club site if anyone is interested. Viva la Valley!
I just can't bring myself to believe the blatant reference to what it's hidden in. I mean they might as well have said "The medallion is hidden in a Dove ice cream box." With as PO'd as the clue-writer is this year, they wouldn't lob us a grafefruit like that this early.
PEACEFUL BIRD, it has to be a brand name of some sort
ah yes good ol dove
just wondering, anyone, is leob lake pronounced lobe?
on the west side of loeb lake is the playground
looked up the special olympics website for minnesota but they don't use the linking circle moniker. So I think the malchow or brooks association is better. Wasn't there something though about the curling club that's in st paul by western and selby on the news during the olympics? Just talking aloud.
a great big (blows raspberries) to all the non-believers and sheep who didn't trust the scribe.
The medallion was at Marydale in '72
It's either way too obvious or way too deep...or both!
Didn't #1 say they were going to make it harder???
EX Stud, Why, what are you noodling???
Marydale is SMALL... It used to be a dump. Doubt the location... Then again...
Last year, they had ace in clue # 2, which referred to a box of Ace playing cards.
electric duane- maybe being so blatant helps the writer, a bunch of jokers will go throw dove wrappers everywhere.
lobe is a circle
tim, that's a great idea :)
Dove box for sure.. man of steel makes me think of a knight. Maybe Mcknight??? East st Paul???
The clues always fit some pattern of general area (St.Paul or Ramsey County) something very near the site (usually in the park or in view) something far away but visible, what it's in (usually within the first few clues and it continues to mention nearby and visible things until the end when it pinpoints the spot.
This is not early for a direct mention of what it's in.
I'm not as sold on the Kent thing as I am on a man of mettle.
it says look for the name around the deal, its got to be referring to streets. Anyone know of a clark or kent street around any parks?
Anyone up for an Ice Cream Social???
Yeah tim that was my thought.
I am going to reasearch the 1972 clues when the medallion was at Marydale.
brew, are you thinking battle creek or just trying to make it fit? serious question, don't take offence at it.
A man of steel cannot be real But another has plenty of mettle Look for his name around "(our deal)" -- being the medallion and it'll be boxed
And you'll be in very fine fettle To escape the herd find a peaceful bird Somewhere deep in the snow Our treasure is boxed inside the word And that's what you need to know
I think what most of this clue means is that it's in a box with the name of sometype of metal.
Henry Ford Did not make steel and he had plenty of mettle...
does anyone know if this leob lake at maryland is pronounced as lobe?
alright duane, I missed it. lets have the ice cream social at the frog pond!!!!
Circular Reference...All the wheels on the new Ford Trucks in downtown Highland Park...
Martin Luther King park is between Mackubin and Kent just south of the I-94 freeway. We've scouted around there for some hunt in the past. It would be a nice park to dig in...and the clues fit I believe but would have to do a look-see.
Eastview park or rec is very close to Harding high school Harding Knights it says look around???
The mettle and a "superhero" has to refer to something other than a street, unless is it Kent or MLK. No other streets fit according to the maps I am referencing. An I missing something?
I just can't bite on the superman noodle. If I'm wrong I'll be the 1st one at the frog pond, but I'm not buying today.
well, im slap me on the butt, and call me lost
yes it is lobe lake
Lelej... mettle = metal = armor = KNIGHT?
I am not pointing in any direction yet. That was the first thought that came to mind was McKNIGHT on the EAST side of St paul. PROPER PLACE reminds me of the big ice castle Thats all. :)
martin luther king rec. center is on kent! I found my flashlight and looked in my papers...is this something? anyone know this place?
EX Stud, Sounds good, but I don't know how they say it, but I can find out tomorrow. Also there is the RR bridge right there, could it be the "linking" there talking about???
more like slap me across the face (with a clue-by-four) and call me lost, wing. allison, you desperately need to start working for mom. at least that way we've all got an in on the clues :)
Marydale Park RULES
The clues in '72 were much different then these clues
That was just my thaught
our deal = our dale, or a duel, our lead...
Loeb lake is the lake at Marydale Park and is pronounced Lobe.
We've done some noodling and walking through Martin Luther King Park several years ago. I think it's a real possibility.
thanks ya dig a lobe is a circular reference so maybe loeb lake at marydale works
mettle- a man of courage or good disposition
well, since i'm so stumped, i'm gonna hit the sheets. scmd's.
I'm new here and sorta new to the hunt itself. I'm wondering if deal could be Dale which is also close to Marydale?? From my memory that park is real small.
well thanks everyone for your thoughts, i'm going to go and dream about the clues. Nighty nite :-)
trips joe
or not.
Does it matter that the clue says "another HAS plenty of mettle" but Martin Luther King is no longer alive?
Deal=Dale in Marydale?
A dale is similar to a depression- dale street, Marydale
Isnt it obvious a man of steel refers to a knight??
I'm out. Good night.
I won't be picking up a shovel for quite a while. Right now it'd make more sense to pick up a bus. Too soon...way too soon.
Scribe, thanx for the post.
Over & Out
A man of steel could just as easily be clark kent, franklin steele carnigie etc
like the idea regg man..
How appropriate for a dove container to be where the medallion is found at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
who created superman?
Dale Ave. Runs along MLK Rec Center+ There is a playground at MLK rec center. The medallion has never been found there, though.
yep, I like Marydale. Also I think its inlaid in a slight depression? Can anyone remember? I've been by it a hundered times, but can't remember it.
Loeb Lake is a depression.
Terry, you must have a dream. JK
Anyone know about Prosperity Rec?
Clue No. 1: (Goodluck hidden in this. This is just basically saying The Hunt Is On!)
Go through the cold and prepare to be bold, Or you won't find the secret item Our beloved St. Paul is the place for gold, Dig elsewhere and you'll search ad infinitum Last year at Newell our fate was most cruel, Unfortunately the game ended too soon Come now and prepare for a much tougher duel, Keep on your toes or you'll hunt until June
Clue No. 2: (This is a Must Clue in every treasure hunt clue list. This is saying stay Away from the Golf Courses and Statues)
There's no need to destroy as you deploy For the hunt in our wonderful town Golf courses and statues you must not annoy And please steer clear of all private ground
Clue No. 3: (Find a tire swing "circular=linking" and the treasure is just out of view. Keep an eye out for banks nearby)
Circular thinking can be one way of * linking To the treasure that lies out of view. Your bank account won't be shrinking If you can figure out this clue.
Clue No. 4: (Certainly NOT downtown because its neither East Or West. "playing" is another reference to the playground that the tire swing is in)
East and west are part of our test Though only one is the proper place If this choice leaves you depressed Playing might put a smile on your face
Clue No. 5: (Not a man of steel, but a man of courage and determination. A name of a man will be nearby. The medallion is hidden in a Dove Icecream box.)
A man of steel cannot be real but another has plenty of mettle Look for his name around our deal and you'll be in very fine fettle To escape the herd find a peaceful bird somewhere deep in the snow Our treasure is boxed inside the word and thats what you need to know
and doesn't marydale depress down?...were as the stree is high and you walk down into the park...a low depression surronded by the hills??? help me out here...what about matrin luther king rec. center on kent?
How about Franklin Delano Roosevelt - President with the 'New Deal' domestic program and the great Depression?
I live down the street from marydale there are many deppressions there. MLK is good also, But I LOVE MARYDALE
I should be dreaming - but have a strong urge to go check out a couple of things. I don't think I'm going to convince hubby that he should get up to go though.
I have a strong feeling about Phalen
hey couldn't it be mcknight our man of steal
know bout prosperity,
nice one Ya dig :)
battle creek is separated by mcknight
or sometimes children "play" in a pile of "leaves"
What in this clue would make you think phalen???
the west side is in st. paul
Terry, I'll go with ya. I cant get my hubby out either. How far are you from marydale, I'm about 15-20 min.
"My name's Winger, I carry a shovel."
Have shovel will travel reads the card of a man!
:-)
Nite all.
If memory serves me...and that might be a stretch...I think there is a metal plague of MLK on the outside wall of that building.
Last year at Newell our fate was most cruel, Unfortunately the game ended too soon Come now and prepare for a much tougher duel, Keep on your toes or you'll hunt until June
I can see how a person would say Battlecreek.... the reference to "duel" in this is ntriguing.....
I cannot find a man of mettle around marydale
Sharky-Prosperity Rec is surronded by ivy ave., cottage ave., germain st., and kennard st. It has bowling lanes, tennis courts, baseball fields, and a pull-up bar!
the south of phalen is in saint paul, the west, the south. the north of phaelen is in maplewood, not the east. besides, its not phaelen.
ya dig..so are you thinking battle creek on mcknight?...or???... isn't that maplewood?
Diggin' Queen - I am not convinced about Marydale. I think I'll go check out MLK on the way into work tomorrow.
"I cannot find a man of mettle around marydale"
Kent.....Clark Kent. Not Superman but a man of mettle?
I just find it amazing how everyone tells everyone their views. Interpretations spread too fast online.
MLK is good. I was there in 1996
Marydale looks pretty good
Terry? I don't know if you remember me, but we met at the park last year, me and my grumpy looking hubby.
Cougar, Is that you Tom?
FETTLE
Noun
Condition, state, trim of spirits or health. Now chiefly in in good fettle, in fine fettle, etc.
"Maureen is in fine fettle."
Verb intransitive
Make ready, arrange, put to rights, tidy; groom (a horse etc.). To clean a place up.
Vera exhorted Samantha, "Hey lady, thats not what we pay you for, get fettling!"
Morning All...just one quick thought about the dove box...does it really matter if they give away what it is in? It wouldn't assist in where we dig/look and really what wouldn't you thourghly check out?
battle creek keep sounding better. but could man of steel, not being real, but a man of mettle, be a reference to a statue, like figure
Take a gander at Boyd Park. James J. Hill was a ore magnate (man of metal); his mansion is nearby and there is a bust of a firefighter (they gotta have mettle) near the northeast corner of the park. Also St. Joseph's academy and the tech institute are close for clue 3 "thinking" ref. we be noodling!
strikitrich- McKnight is the border between Maplewood and st paul. st paul on the WEST, maplewood on the EAST
hmm, THE TIN MAN
Diggin' Queen - I bet I'd recognize you.
correct tim.
I agree with the brew man,,, I have a strong feeling about Phalen,,,, Circular is a wheel a link could be a lock... wheelock the east side of the park is not o.k it is homes the west side is o,k There are alot of duels there,,, It's Phalen Keller.. 2 parks but not at Keller 2 golf courses,,, and Circular also means some thing has come full circle
the statue of the ice castle is there,, 100 years thay would be full circle any other thoughts????????????
Battle creek is a regional park that is devided into two parks one side is on the east side of Mc(KNIGHT)which would be maplewood and the other side which is in st. paul is on the west side
I was the one who thought you were a guy, till you introduced yourself.
Nope
alan...you and i seem to be picking up on the same thoughts...have you noticed..anyway...i really like what your saying!! I am saying it too...in case you didn't notice... were do we go tomorrow? i think i will check out mary dale 8 am and mcknight at 10
I do remember that!
It is the tin man so follow the yellow brick road lol
"Nope"
Okie Dokie
that sounded bad. I thought you were a guy cause I had never met you before that. and Terry could be either. There that sounds better.
who played the tin man?
The medallion was at battle creek in 1995, I am going to research those clues
Cougar - yes and the interpretations can be harmful, don't listen and/or believe all that you hear
I knew that, Diggin' Queen! LOL!!
Jack Haley played the Tin Man
I believe that once again this year the park will be a small one, like it was in 1999. All regional parks, such as Battle Creek will be eliminated
thank you thx, i should know that, but i forgot
Kiki, what's the temp in LV?
Terry- My hubby's b-day is tomorrow, so I think I will have a hard time dragging him out. But I have to go get a suitcase tomorrow that the airline just found, so maybe I can convince him we need to do a drive by. Some people just don't get the obsession. I tell ya.
regg man...what did you find out in those previous clues?...will u share please??? thx :)
The 1995 clues (when it was at battle creek) do not look like our clues
"thank you thx, i should know that, but i forgot"
I had to look it up.
Now I'm really going to bed this time.
Nite all.
why cougar
Before we were married, it was a given that he'd hunt with me. My mom had hunted for years when we were growing up and I loved deciphering the clues with her. We're now in the middle of our 31st hunt together.
Happy Birthday to Mr. Diggin' Queen!
regg man- ummmmmmmm, they dont have clues look like each other, it just doesnt happen. but a good thought, though.
regg man did you change your name?
Look back to the clues in that year when it was at conway (cougars). It stated that year it was going to be harder than usually, that time by being in a new park. Now, it is also going to be a harder duel.
well im going to pass out soon, night all
No my name was always that, why?
night and SCMD's to all!
terry..great story..congrats! i love the hunt...but only my 9 year...a"rookie" in these circuts
that's still a long shot cougar, then what's your park
k, dove soap....
Arrrrrrhhhhggggg!!!!!!!!!
Marydale, Eastview, Battle Creek, Hidden Falls, MLK, Marydale, Eastview, Battle Creek, Hidden Falls, MLK, Marydale, Eastview, Battle Creek, Hidden Falls, MLK, Marydale, Eastview, Battle Creek, Hidden Falls, MLK, Marydale, Eastview, Battle Creek, Hidden Falls, MLK, Marydale, Eastview, Battle Creek, Hidden Falls, MLK, Marydale, Eastview, Battle Creek, Hidden Falls, MLK, Marydale, Eastview, Battle Creek, Hidden Falls, MLK, Marydale, Eastview, Battle Creek, Hidden Falls, MLK,
They all could fit!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are + & - to each.
A "View" in the "East" by my alma mater high school. Decipher it from there.
Hi Terry Whats Up!
Like the next clue, been gone. Steve says Hi!, hopes to see you guys at the dig. When you see him be sure to call him Uncle Buck.
Hi Maureen! We better see you at the hunt and hi to Steve! Why Uncle Buck?
Sue-Butt, my husband and I moved to Las Vegas this past May... I'm still enjoying the treasure hunt tradition though... I've never missed the hunt and I don't intend to start!
coug's eastview is a tiny park, it'd only take a hundred people to dig through that park
At conway, one of the clues talks about a man of fame. Other then that, nothing strikes me.
cougar, VIEW and EAST aren't in the same clue
Eastview is so small and hidden, I don't think the paper would have suspected anyone except neighbors to have thought of it by now.
Old movie! Have to watch it sometime in order to get the true meaning.
No time for old movies now! That will have to wait till this hunt is over.
but think about it, what if we all went to east view right now and dug we'd be back by 2
I think if you play in "leaves" you'll find the dove soap bar Or this is just another reference to the playground just out of view....
If this choice leaves you depressed Playing might put a smile on your face
Harding sucks, and anyone can know about Eastview park, just a thought...
Marydale, MLK, and Hidden Falls look good, I am going to drive around tomorrow
Eastview park is not as small as you think there is alpt of area there
Harding DID suck, I don't know about recently. Too busy now watching UofM suck all around.
East and View are not in the same clue...
Terry, I first started digging when my dad took me to mounds park when I was about 6-8 yr. old. I don't remember if they found it there or not that year. but that was my 1st time, so about 20 somthing years ago. I hunted ever since. I got real close one year, I knew right where it was within a 4 foot radius, but the driver of the car we were in, slammed into a guard rail due to ice on the roads. Someone else found it about 4 hours later, right where we were going to look. It just makes me want it all the more. And here I am.
I know east view real good, and the one thing that bothers me about that park, is it's on a hill not a depression.
Can you believe that there are no Tom Thumbs listed in St.Paul (Tom Malchow..a streach perhaps, but thought I would check)
If your thinking a dove soap bar why not just think that it's in a soap box
U of M doesnt suck, you go there?
como hidden falls newell
highlang valley
sorry highland
st capital
At Eastview, there is a tetherball pole, could tetherball be the "circular thinking"? Tetherballs go around the pole in the circular motion.
fourth year
Marley--the keg spot up at Highland park?
start grad school next year
oops did I say bar? LOL
yes
no person would ever truly believe a medallion would be hidden inside of a soap 'bar', so its dismissed...
i'm leaning towards BCP now
things the med could be in, a bank envolope,a metal box, a dove soap box, a dove soap bar,
what part of Hidden Falls would you go to?
They coated it in almond bark one year...
Yummmmm, cheddar cheese brats.
Yuuuuck, Green Ketchup on brat that my kids picked out.
think clue 5 says...in a box..'dove' ice cream or soap for what it's worth
What about dove ice cream?
Diggin' Queen - Don't you find the longer you hunt, the more you hold snap shots of digging without remembering what park that snap shot in your mind is? I was thinking of that with the circular link thing from a hunt in Phalen some years back. There was a fence or chain thing there that we were digging by.
the med is in a dove soap box in a pile of leaves under a Snow bank
Kiki, you from the part of St.Paul that would have hung out at the Valley?
what part of Hidden Falls would you go to?
Dove IceCream Box!
Ya, that's true. But I remember Mounds Park specifically, cause Indians burried under those mounds gave me the heebe geebies. In fact they still freak me out.
???????????
V, go back about 3 posts.
I'm hitting the sheets here. See you all in the morning...probably hundreds of posts to slog through again.
Sweet (Dove) Cooler (Ice Cream) Medallion (Mettle) Dreams everyone!
I'm a former St.Paul downtowner
night Ter
see Terry has my idea..... mettle doesn't mean a MAN of steel. It means a man with much fettle (courage and determination)
ok..well...see ya anyway..as i know i will be back...peace ya'all
By the way, who cares what it's hidden in. We all rip apart anything we find that could possibly contain the little bugger anyways.
yeah, i have all there is, are people saying "dove ice cream!!!!"
Hey, how many Kiki's do you know in a lifetime..wild shot. Would have been funny if we knew each other...
I know, I mean, even if I know what it is in, I will still rip apart anything. There's 10 grand on the line
what part of HF would any of you go to?
VJ--who's goin' to Hidden?
Dove makes chocolate too, could be in a candy wrapper.
Not unless you know a person named "Dale"- SueButt
And its inside of a Dove Soap Box
PioneerPlanet Water Cooler
