The capitol is an old stockyard? I did not know that.
Hi all-
I was out today by myself and tonight with hubby. We went to Allison's park and it looked good. We also went to my park (Iris) and many of the clues fit, but is a bit more of a stretch than Allison's park.
Earlier today I went to West Minnihaha and I have removed that from the list. I am wondering about Hidden Falls - but it is a park and not a rec center.
There were a few people out an about but no real action.
My Take On The Clues:
#1 This park has been the place for many gold medals, and is within the city limits of St. Paul. Many duels or contests have taken place in this park (and continue to), as well as many dualities concern it - only one of which was that you had to "keep on your toes."
#2 Stay off private ground and don't mess with any statues or golf courses.
#3 Circular thinking/linking refers to bicyles. This is part of one of the dualities.
#4 East and west is another duality of the park, but which is correct? Playing referrs to playing fields in the park.
Otay, otay! I'll got bock to The Frog Pond. I didn't find Bee while we were there, and it hasn't Been dug out. Which is kind'a weird...
I was told there is an old stockyard close by the capital, not sure where. My resource knows quite a bit about the area. He's live here all his 64 years and he would steer me wrong.
Green- I lost your email. Anyway, if you need the use of my scanner I am available. Are you going to be out and about tomorrow?
going to the pp green?
Hi guys. Where was the old stock yard?
Is Maureen Hursey Here?
I think that there is a possibility that it could be at the capitol. But clue 5 will help us out!
I'm not sure where the old stockyard is, but I'll ask my friend tomorrow. Hopefully, tonight's clue will guide us a little more. I'm anxious to start digging.
green, go to my post 14216. Those the reasons why I think HF.
Ms. Green--heard you were at Phalen today? Any thoughts on Phalen?
Leela, I go where I'm told to... LOL!!!
Jake, you've ONLY spent all o'Sat nite and all o'last nite with Steve!!! Could have gotten a book anytime!!! Yeah. I'm gonna put on some more clothes - I FROZE today - and head to the meeting joint.
My thoughts on Phalen: The Spotters are starting to watch all the parks...
OK, i'm back... leelabell>> what 2 parks were you talking about??
You goofball Green! LOL See you in a little bit!
I'm diggin' tomorrow, is anyone else?
You know what'd be great? If they hid the med at Newell again!!
Wolff, I slog. I got your ideas.
I gotta head out. I tell you, I'll never Bee able to see a movie from the same mind set I used to. All actors/actresses and film makers have my respect.
Ms. Green--I got a very weird feeling from a guy driving a St.Paul city truck last night at the paper--drove by 7 times from 10:50 to 11:40 when the paper came out--stopped me on the way home and asked me where people are saying the medallion is....
The reference to banks, in my estimation is, what retrains a river? Banks.
Green...what's "cabbaged"?
I can't tell you Allison's park. But, I was also at Iris, which still has possibilities, and West Minnihaha, which at this point I've ruled out.
I'm not sold on Valley
Wolffpac, that's what I thought, but, there are so many lakes.
You know what'd be great? If they hid the med at Newell again!!
Jill, that was the place I was trying to find. Where is it? Can't find it on a map.
Lakes have shores not banks.
Digger...its by Regions Hospital
that large river bank at Harriet sure did shrink this summer...
I was there tonight - It's on Jackson and University - Up on some cliffs - Kind of tricky to find - Right behind the Capitol and Regions hospital - Jill
aka Ramsey County hospital, or Anker hospital, depending on your age! It offers the coolest view of Downtown..
If the treasure lies out of view, its HIDDEN!
Ah, Estaban...
Never Mind! I found it!!!
"Cabbaged" - swiped, took, stole, "borrowed and forgot to return."
Many people know it because it is a handy place to park for "taste of Minnesota"
Thanks, THG. I was out today doing errands for my office and stopped to have a bite to eat. I happened to stop by Wal-Mart that had a McDonalds inside of it. Sitting at my table I noticed that all around me were "SMILES". McDonalds states they make you smile and Wal-Mart will give you one of theirs. Is it a possibility that one of these 2 items might be close to the park/place?
I can't wait another minute for the clue - I'm gettin a little nervous! - Jill
no wal-marts in st. paul
Exactly!! but maybe the paper is purposely doing that to throw you off though
One of the coolest views.
I have a feeling that the 5th clue will be very important!
Jake: an extra copy of treasure hunters guide is a good thing to have in the bathroom to read while your on the crapper so buy two. It may pay off someday to memorize a bunch of trivia you could get from that book!
Regg: All of the clues are important.
Unfortunately, my schedule isn't going to allow me to dig until Saturday AM and I'm definitely going to be driving around checking things out around the capitol and Valley (that is unless the next few clues sends me looking elsewhere).
What about Marydale
Volume discounts for the Stud!
Stud, you make me laugh!!!
Mabye the bank thing is referring to what it is hidden in, like a check box
Right now I'm pointing to the HF/Crosby area and the Capitol
thanx man just wanna be helpful
Steve--I might add that the guide is a pretty comprehensive view of parks in St. Paul for non-medallion hunting purposes as well. Like finding a place to play tennis, etc.
I thought about that but thats pretty big. What about a bank envelope
Every year, one of the 1st clues tells you what it is hidden in
yeah, we kinda forgot about what it could be in...
Ahh....thanx DD, but really there's no other need for it. It's a one purpose commodity.
Whats going on! Just got back from work, can someone fill me in on the hot spots, or do I have to go sloggin back through the past 800 or so posts? are the spots everyone still thinks, Palace, Highland, Phalen, and Eastview?
each day before a clue comes out, I always think the next one is going to be big, then it turns out to say somethin stupid.
I think it's in a safe that has the 10K in it and says LEAH on the front
I do like the Hidden Falls idea. The circular balls on the lines for the aircraft and Fort Snelling in the background, divides Minneapolis and St. Paul, Ford Plant, US Bank, etc. Hmmmm?
A happy meal bag?!#%
No hot spots yet - Sorry Crap Face
I hate especially after the hunt is over and you find out that the clues were so simple and all that work you went through to solve them.
Mabye, Beth, but wouldn't an envelope get all shredded up when it is in the snow?
I went to one park today and saw no other hunters, so I'm gonna hunker down and wait out the fifth clue.
Regg man--agreed. I can't help but feel they have told us already. Beth--they hid in a diaper one year, so I don't think a check box is out of the question. In terms of hiding objects, I agree it will be smaller because the snow depth is low. If it is in something fairly big, it would have to be something that may exist as "litter" like a Mcdonalds box, or something people would find icky like a diaper. I think a check box would be tough to hide in this snow depth, would not hold up to melting due to being made of paper, and because it would be tough to bury, would stand out as not belonging in a park.
The names this year are very creative I must say. Jill, do you agree with my post on Hidden Falls?
I hate that to DigginDude! - Jill
Thats ok, Alan & Jill, there never are. LOL!
The circular balls thing was used in 1993 when it was at Hidden Falls.
Do I read that my McDonald's idea may be something?
TD>>> Definately HF i think too!
dt dave i'd be concerned about the guy in the stp truck. you did tell him to do his own research, right =). and you're trying to convince us that the parks have more than one purpose. why didn't anyone tell me that.
or else somewhere downtown
Diggin Dude. I'm with you. We all know the explanations will be very general, yet we ignore our wisdom and make them out to be more than they are.
Treasure Digger--I offer it only as an item that could be left in a park that would not draw a lot of attention--Fast food bags are left in parks every day. Unlike say, a teddy bear.
Ya, that's true. It sounds good at first though.
It's just Jill this year - Alan moved to Arizona, but he's here in spirit. Hey TD - I follow you on you posts on Hidden Falls - I think tonight clue will hopefully nail this down a little bit - I feel like I should be digging somewhere, maybe I'll where my button and go in my front yard - Hey by the way - are we getting snow anytime soon?
except back in 93 one of the clues refered to the floating balls.
I still think east and west has to do with East River Road and West River Road, and one of them being the correct one in which the entrance of the park is located
Dave, I agree. The smile thing has me thinking that it is a significant meaning besides making the finder happy.
Time to change gears. I'll check you all out tomorrow. Guide out.
DD - I feel it's going to be hidden in the pocket of a CC person. That wouldn't seem out of place at a park.
Diggin Dude, hidden falls sounds good!
Ok, I'm back from my little digging expedition, and that was about what it amounted to, little digging. You get to the park, and where do you start? So now that I've had my chance to check it out, Valley Rec Center is indeed where I was, and after these four clues, it seems to fit there perfectly (too perfectly?). I hope to know for sure within the next couple of hours.
I was just wondering, after this whole treasure hunt is all over, do most of you people still post in here until next year, just to talk with eachother and stuff? cause its a cool little group. I've never belonged to a "group" before.
Well, maybe it wouldn't be in one of our pockets. Yet I still say THIS IS OUR YEAR. But I'm also a Vikes fan so I'm used to this as well.
diggindude, i thought that too. and nearly had myself convinced that this was the single clue that pointed to hidden falls. then i remembered that shepard road was what i was thinking was east river road, and east river road was what i thought was west river road. west river road, unfortunately, is across the river, in minneapolis.
Hi all. Lets see, went to Crosby, HF, West Minne, whizzed by highland. Iris. Prosperity. I'm checking out Harriet tomarrow. My sense tells me that it's probably not in Iris or crosby but i havent ruled out any others. DD i'll have to try the onion rings :-)
Oh and i'll check out Valley. I have a feeling this is going to be a long hunt this year. Yeah!! (She's mad, MAD i tell you.....)
A mcdonalds cup or a wal-mart bag that would weather well.
Hey Gang - This is my first post this year. Last year was dissapointing...so what's the latest gossip? Hidden Falls, Capitol Grounds... Of course I am sure that I can come up with some obscure references to my beloved Phalen once again this year!
Could be TD--I appreciate any original thoughts--Ares--I come up with two conclusions with the City Truck--
1. this guy was there to "feel things out"
2. Norm needs to give this guy more to do.
Jill, we met at Cherokee on the Saturday morning by the chain link fence. Talked over the clues and decided we were right to be there. So far the clues fit (for me) the capitol and Hidden Falls. Dave, what's your thoughts on things?
what time did you see the truck, dave?
There are 5 round tables at Valley Rec, "Circular thinking"?
I bet it's in one of those uprooted trees on the bank of HF... they look all tangled up
Not only are there round tables, each table is encircled by seats, each of which is also a circle, and the tables are arranged in a circle, and if you standing there, thinking circularly, the playground area, where you might be smiling, is out of view.
Ares--He passed by PP many many times between 10:50 and 11:40 when the paper came out, and he stopped me on fourth on my way home
TD--I like Iris, but I tend to like parks that I can hunt on my lunch hour, and lunch is Porky's onion rings.
Ares - It is East River Road, but I think the West could refer to West 7th st. which intersects it at the entrance.
Can someone tell me where "Valley Rec Center" is?
Yep i remember td
Hi, Goldenboy. I was wondering where you were this year. I called you on the cell phone when it was at Conway and met you and your friends there. Husband was telling me to quit flirting.
D.D. about the fast food thing... mcdonalds frenchfry package on the back has the olympic logo.. gold circles linked together but even if that was right on what its in really doesn't matter
which makes me wonder. what is someone doing driving around in a city truck at 1100 at night?
I went by Newell and there were tons of diggers! So I thought to myself - why not back to back years? What do you all think?
Allison Wonderland, I am a member of your club!
Maybe it's in the Oval Office- that put a smile on Clinton's face!!- Sorry I just can't think straight anymore
the treasure is likely up high - where you have to "stay on your toes" and the treasure "lies out of view"? Maybe in a tree or play structure....I don't think we'll be shovelin snow this year!
Stud--it matters only that if it is, we will remember post 14405, and you can be a water cooler god.
never even thought of west 7th, cm. i'm thinking of driving down to hidden tomorrow at lunch if anything decent comes out at midnite.
Valley Rec Center is on Jackson and University, sort of behind the Capitol and off to the right.
there can only be one of those and they say he's a vampire
Hey Treasure Digger! - Of course I remember you. Have you been out carousing yet this year...for the treasure I mean.
Hi Regg Mann. Hope you like the club! I may do another mock (virtual) hunt after this one is over for the club members.
Ares - To answer your question about what a city truck driver is doing out at 11:00 at night... same as 11:00 during the day, NOTHING! :)
BTW --Allison--Jake and Scribe are handling paper duties tonight--I am turning in early--tough work day! Last night it came out at 11:40--so much for the early advantage. Kind of disappointing. I will return to paper tomorrow--gotta win plane tickets. That way my 10K will go even further in Jamaica.
Why are people considering Newell? Do some people know something we don't know?
People say NP every year - counting me.
The feeling I was getting from people was "duel" years at Newell
lol cm.
stud, we've got a couple of alleged vampires on this board. and i haven't heard from the other one yet. just so ya know, scribe, i didn't bring it up this time, but i'm certainly willing to finish it.
GB, not yet only over maps and clues. Will definitely be out on Saturday. DD, what are your reasons for Iris if you don't mind sharing? The Knox Lumber as is Fort Knox is good but am not sure of anything else. Is Porky's drive-in open and is it good eating?
Can someone tell me where Eastview Rec Center is?
Good and oipen Treasure Digger
At the request of my faithless companions this evening we checked out Iris as well, but didn't get the feeling it was there. Although one friend did come up with the clever idea of circular thinking being checkers (there are tables there with built in checkerboards).
Porky's is open and good eating, if you are like me and think that the four food groups are sugar, salt, grease, and coffee! The rest of the convincing was given to me by Allison--I can't claim them as my own, but he's got some good ones, and I will let him claim them as his "intellectual property"
Crap face it is right on E 5th street in st paul off of white bear ave.
I mentioned before that "one proper place" reminds me of the ice castle, the granddaddy of 'em all, was at Phalen. "East" perhaps, directs us to the East side of St. Paul
Where are you guys goin to dig tomorrow, I will know when the 5th comes!
But valley is at a school......would they have people searching outside a school in session?
I am really into the east side of st paul thing myself just what I feel I may be wrong
Did you check out the little park oh lynhurst??? DD
DD, add salt to that list and I'm a customer for sure. I always like checking out new places to eat. Thanks for the info. I agree with Allison being very clever with his ideas and he's usually on the target.
Allison doesn't get intellectual property for Iris. :)
Reasons for Iris? Well East Lynnehurst and West Lynnehurst are big ones. And it a place its never been hidden in before. I'd say the case for Valley is much stronger though.
Hello Everyone, This is TheRock4927 from last year, aka Rob. Hows everyone doin? Wow i see Allison is back for another year as well as GoldenBoy wow and Downtown Dave. Welcome back to another season. Heres my take on the clues so far, in one of the clues it said something about being out of sight, well why not Hidden, as in hidden falls, which is by the airport, which if i believe connects st paul and minneapolis together. Which brings me to clue 3 where it says Circular.....Linking. Well if you take the C in the first line and cirlcle it down to the bottom its spells city as in Linking cities.
AW - I thought cass gilbert because many of clues fit neatly, except "playing might put a smile on your face". Then I drove down 'Valley St. E'(1 block long street) to see the above explained. Tuff parking if it gets crowded.
Violent J? your back?
Even though Iris was my first pick, I have to admit it doesn't feel right - whatever that means. I still want it to be there. I have grown attached to that park.
Joe
Brew Man--you do never sleep--I've seen your posts at like, oh, 4 am! Have I checked out Lynnhurst? I don't know that one. I always dig linwwod, but that's because it is in my area, and close to starbucks.
Yup
Valley having the school there does seem to be a problem, yet all the clues fit there so well. On the other hand, the school does fit with "test".
I like Valley's connection to June. I can't get June to work for Iris.

Right Allison...I went there today and thought "they aren't gonna want a bunch of strangers mingling with the kids at recess......so I kinda ruled it out.
leela--Iris/june--help me out.
I know what you mean about Iris. Its a charming little park. I kind of want to hang out there when it gets warm again.
Raider. If you take the C and circle it down, it spells CIYT. Or are you meaning something different?
I can't - I can't make a connection between Iris and June - unless you say that the flower blooms in June - quite a reach.
leela, dave, not that i'm an iris fan, but when do irises bloom? just a thought.
Yummy Carmel Macciatos' !!! Makes for a cold hunt to be a little warmer. I have to ask something, Is this frog pond thing a place where the 'regs" send people who really dont know better? I would 'steer clear' of that one :)
Ares--good question! Off to find out....
HF and Phalen seem good
what's the June..Valley connection?
Raider-- great points! i was thinking along those same lines
If it is Valley, I don't think the hunt will go past the weekend. On the other hand, digging out there will be rather tough with all that packed snow.
If any one wants to know the old stockyards are located in So. St. Paul. I was born and raised there (ssp) hehehehe
Thats nice, how you been for the past few hours J?
BTW - they do bloom in June
Brew Man--yes.
Allison>>> what are your reasons for Valley??
My Master Gardner dad says they bloom in June--at least in Little Falls.
I've been fine. Why do you ask?
Hey all! :) Well, we just came back from hunting...I think it's too early to hunt...the clues are sooo vague. But...why do people think it's at Highland? What is there? Although, Highland Jr and Sr has a link...he he...but it's not circular. :)
And the Hidden Falls I like that idea...about the city links..Allisonwondrland...what do you think about that one?!
Happy hunting...
I don't think Valley now, but mabye after the 5th clue
How big would you say Valley is? Is it bigger than Conway or Newell?
dave, britannica didn't say when they bloom, but here's something i freely stole from them "Irises are either bulbous or rhizomatous (with thick, creeping underground stems) and have six petallike floral segments, the more erect inner ones called standards and the usually drooping outer ones called falls." hmm. six. there's been quite a bit of speculation about that number here before.
out of view may also be a reference to this as the colored portion of eyes are called irises. can you tell i'm stretching here?
Allison>>> what are your reasons for Valley??
valley is right by a school, and school gets out in June, the same time you'd supposedly be getting done huntin. kind of a stretch, but I think its a stretch to use June as a clue at all. But for other stretches, you can see the gold statues of the capitol, the 1st bank sign, and there is lots of fencing (duels). There are much better reasons for valley than that though.
Allison - I think this year we won't be diggin snow. Because of the references to "keep on your toes" (#1) and treasure that "lies out of view". This would make sense since we had so much snow so early in the season. My advice - leave the shovel at home.
Valley is pretty small
I keep thinking 'June' maybe something to do with it is a very popular time of the year to get married. It also is the 6th month. Don't mind me, I just am putting down my thoughts as they come across my mind
hey! diggers are on channel 11 news at como!
June is the 6th month, eh?
Valley was bigger than I thought it would be, but not huge. Can you imagine if you have to look in every tree at the winning park.
Ares-I appreciate stretching when it is clever and original, like yours.
depends on your calendar, dharma. some people would say it's the third or fourth month.
Valley doesn't seem that big until you contemplate digging it and then its this vast expanse. Not broken up into sections like Newell or Conway.
good pt. ares
Weather flash, a small chance of snow Friday but not much.
I was just askin Violent J....i wanna be friends man. can we get over our feuding from earlier this morning?
I have been to Harriet Island and Cherekee parks, not a soul was visible for miles.
Snow for Friday..Gonna make the hunt that much tougher. If it lasts that long!
What is going on with Como Park? Diggers are there?
CRAP FACE your full of crap theres no diggers there ive been watchin 11 for the whole time
Night all--turnin in early. Post lots, and post well.
Yeah, whatever Crap Face
I think the June thing is not important. I am going with HF. Someone should drive by there.
Medallion wishes, Dave sleep tight
if i see something i like in a coupla hours, regg. i'll do a drive-thru tomorrow at lunch.
I swear to god! i saw em!
night dave. i expect to see you here all the earlier tomorrow, though :).
See the pioneer press is so dumb sometimes. They made a mistake with that clue, they forgot to capitalize Linking, that the biggest part of the clue. It spells CITY. And Hidden (out of sight) Falls connects minneapolis and st.paul (east & west)
Hi Angelic!
Know any jokes?
:-)
What's up with all the people at Como and Newell?
A pheasant runs into a bar>>>>
Mainly I picked Valley because of the East West thing. If you look at the addresses in St. Paul, the dividing line where the east addresses become west addresses goes right through Valley, so the park is both east AND west. And there is a playground there. And I mentioned the circular tables earlier (with the circular seats, and all the tables arranged in a circle) which are located down a slope. So if one assumes from clue #4 that you want to be on the side where you can play (because that would make you smile) then it fits with clue #3, because if you are standing among the tables, down that slope, the treasure would be out of view.
Also I like it because its not a park, its a rec center. And the fact that the clues have been so vague or even nonexistant so far indicate to me that its a smaller park that won't need as many clues. Plus, its an obscure place that has never been used which fits with the idea of it supposedly being a tougher hunt, and you might have to be bold to think its there (or maybe you have to be bold to dig amongst the kiddies?) Plus there's a bunch of words that are possibly significant, all of which could be applied here.
What time does the next clue come out?
"A pheasant runs into a bar>>>>"
You're on baby!
so there's this mathematician, a physicist and an engineer... oh and a flock of sheep.
Just 35 min. before we get the 5th clue!
in theory, regg. in theory.
LOL!
I think I know that one Ares.
Where were you last night? Not at McGovern's!
I'm packing it in as well. Hope to see lots of happy posts here tomorrow morning. Good luck all and I'll talk with you tomorrow night. TD
thx i was overly tired last night. in a rare turn of events, i didn't even wait up for the clue.
alli...where is valley?...and what is with the "iris and June"? ...the beckster had the laptop for the last hour and i lost contact...thx 4 the update...
one of these days, i'm gonna make my way down to mcg's. hopefully, some of the crew will be there when i do :)
Valley is off of University and Jackson
Clue in 35 minutes? Doesnt it come out at 12?
Yo, waddup ninjas? Is someone gonna be gettin the paper from the pioneer press at 11 and postin? Or should I get off my lazy ass and do it myself? Hell, it might not even be worth the time and energy until they start gettin good.
If a duck walks into a bar and a pheasant runs in, who will get served a drink first? It just depends how busy the bartender is silly.
I have to admit, Allison has got some good points! A Valley is also a depression!
Some people were just trying to connect June as being a clue to Iris Park.
"Clue in 35 minutes? Doesnt it come out at 12?"
We got a call coming in at 11:30!
don't know angelic, but i suspect that dinner will be served regardless. :)

Hey, lemme ask you all a question, just so I know where I fit in. How old are most of you people?
the blue number, raider. not refresh.
joe! (tim?)
24
WAZZZAAAP!!! SHAGGY!
The paper is avalible at the Pioneer Press HQ at 11. Thus, the clue comes at 11 and we should get it at 11:30.
I turned 33 the day the hunt began.
40
OH GREAT! now both insane clowns are in here!!
In theory it comes out at 11. Hasn't been the case the last few days. Yesterday it came out at 11:40!
24
I've been here all along, i just haven't felt the need to surface from the shadows.
crap...old enough to know better...but young enough to still do it..
what's anyone think about not annoying golf or statues..anytime they've mentioned not disturbing anything those things have been present at the park. I figure must be a place w/golf course
well, im 20, so im a bit younger than most of you, i see
Angelic, you there?
Let me make formal introductions.Angelic this is everybody, everybody this is angelic!
GROUP HUG!
25 Years youg.a veteran 15 year hunter. That's right I was out there freezing my butt off as a we little kid!
I am kinda young! I have searched every year for a LONG time! This is kinda my life this time a year!
hey crappy, I'm 15
Med-less,your butt-less too!LOL!
scribe, you're late too.
Hey, yo Shaggs,a word to tha wize, look out for that Crap Face ninja, he dont like wicked clowns.
I am not! Ares what are you talkin bout now!!!!
Hey Tim,was talkin at your unc earlier!
the clue is supposed to come out downtown at 11:30, but according to some of the people that had been there every night, it has been getting later and later.
