No, no Scully. Unless my fiance is Scully, but I don't think he'd like that too much. :)
Listen in clue 3 what do you guys make out of it, it says linking in a circular motion, well if you put the C down to the below it spells city. Thats what i think it means but im not sure any other ideas out there?
AW....I checked out your web page....pretty cool!....its interesting seeing the number of visits climb with each day.
Basketball would be good for "keep on your toes". Also circular thinking could mean that it is hidden the very same place it was hidden another year. Who would think of that?
I dont know, ive never found it. LOL!
Thank you for the info on the card
Thanks AW! Is that for sure?
An upside down "C"? Hmm, that would be a horseshoe for GOOD LUCK!
Does anyone know, has anyone that posts on this board found the medallion in the past?
Thanks AW! Is that for sure?
no one "posts" but there have been lurkers that find it. since 98 though, I'm not sure
Ya i found it one year, i think i crapped it out one time but i accidentally flushed it down the toilet and ended up in the diaper next to the mississippi. Go Figure.
Mulder....I think you are right...I doubt "he" would want to be called Scully...*GrinZ*
This is for CRAP FACE:
McDonough Rec Area is borders Wheelock Parkway on the north, immediately west of I35-E. There is an access road there that leads into McDonough Housing and 35E. The rest of the housing area is bordered on the west by Jackson St. and south by Arlington. And yes the K-Mart is just south of the housing area. It's a big open field that's just behind the Mississippi Arts School.
lurkers that have found it? do you have proof?
Thanks for that info! :)
You wear diapers often, Golf?
Hey Hey your thinkin of the city thing all wrong, It is definatly NOT mcdonut. Does anyone know a park that lies on the border of st paul and another city?
lol butt dont your remember the year it was in a diaper? Well i crapped it out and it floated down the river into the diaper
yeah, parts of Battle Creek Park are in Maplewood and Saint Paul, same as Phalen
Hello Sue!
I was checking out some older posts and saw you refer to "deadmans hill"....I'm sure we know eachother....I graduated from HiC in 76...and you?
Are there true believers out there that think it "won't" be in a park just because it hasn't been mentioned?
84
HiC? whats that?
Hi all. I finally got this message board thing figured out this year so I will stop being a lurker and start contributing. RG - isn't hidden falls on the border of St. Paul and Mnpls?
Highland Catholic-across the street to Hillcrest park (oops, Rec Center)
Holy Crap that part where its not in sight, its hidden right? well what about Hidden Creek Park by the Airport?
I dont think that it "wont" be in a park, it could be and it might not be.
deploy could be the torpedo in Como - it was hidden near there in 1990
Raider, you mean Hidden Falls?
You still used that name 8 years later?....I take that back...I most likely don't know you...*smile*...that "huge hill" seems so tiny
Hello! As far as borders go, Battle Creek, Phalen, Cherokee and possibly South st. Anthony Park Rec. Center?
Deploy could also be Fort Snelling. For Army troops.
Who was president during the depression? Do you think the "depressed" clue could have something to do with that? Maybe there is a street or a school with the name.
Medallion-less,
I got that information from something I remember reading on the Cooler Crew site about the Medallion. Before that it was a metal coin that was obviously the same one used every year because you could see all the nicks in it from shovels over the years.
And personally, yes I believe it won't be in a park, more likely a rec center.
AnnetteB...that was the year at Como when two women in dresses and high heels found it on their lunch hour
Roosevelt was the Prez I believe
Yes thats it Hidden Falls!!!!! Its There Its there oh boy midnight better treat me right tonight
I was thinkin the Depression, for Sweede Hollow. What do you guys think.
DUCK LOGO could still mean Mighty Ducks - something to do w/ Hockey. Where is there a Hockey arena?
Alice, a rec center though.....who the heck knows where those are. One would think it's gotta be in a Park like every other year. Right? I guess we'll find out in a few days or so.
that is good thinking Mulder and I'm a big fan of your show.Hoover and Coolidge or Roosevelt.
theres the Phalen-Gustafson Ice Arena behind Johnson Highschool.
Beth, I was thinking that (S. St. Anthony) a while ago because Raymond and Alexander streets cross near there (Raymond Burr and Alexander Hamilton "duel" from clue #1). That's a big stretch though, I think.
SueB.... did you have a sister a year younger than me..name starts with a K?
There is also a bank there too it use to be called phalen bank
No, wrong family, Digs
There is an arena over by Palace and Linwood
I think that's the thing. They want to make it harder by using something people aren't as familiar with, and maybe can't get information on as easily. If you have "The Treasure Hunter's Guide" it does list all the rec centers though and gives you maps for the vast majority of them.
I'm afraid that was Aaron Burr Mulder, not Raymond Burr who I believe was an actor.
this kind of a stretch, but theres also Aldrich Arena on whitebear avenue, and thats right in the "hillcrest" shopping area, by "hillcrest" golf course in maplewood, and those hillcrests could be "linking" to that "Hillcrest" rec-center in the Highland area, since that too is near a golf course.
There are horeshoes at the Horshoe Courts Como Ave (Good Luck)
SueB....yes, there is many Kelly's around
I just had to laugh when I read your post about that hill. Hadn't heard that in ages!
Note that the clues have yet to mention a PARK in St Paul and have usually mentioned that by now.
AW- Whoops, you're right. I told you it was a stretch. :)
there is also whoreshopit by aldrich too there is a park close by there
Quote me if I am wrong. :)
there is also whoreshopit by aldrich too there is a park close by there
Theres also Horseshoe courts at that place that people were talkin about earlier, Palace.
WHat is the connection to horse shoe pit that everyone is referring to????
I agree with you seejay
The GOOD LUCK in the first clue. Luck=horse shoes
Im starting to like Palace more and more all the time.
The referece to GOOD LUCK in bold in the paper I associate w/ a horshoe.
What is the East/West connection to Palace?
Palaca also has many horseshoe pits
I remember when it was hidden NEAR Highland park years back but it wasnt hidden in the park, just near a curb by the boulevard in a gas cap I think. I think we might be dealing with a NON PARK hiding place this year.
Maybe East/West is only saying what part of the park to look.
has anyone ever been too East view re center in St pul?
good luck simply means goodluck
I like Palace too, me and some friends were out there last night, alot of stuff fits and it has that "feeling", like last year, at Newell, we were standing RIGHT ON TOP OF THE DAMN THING! and we decided to come back in the day time the next day and look for it in the same spot, and then it was found a couple hours later. We had the feeling like we knew it was around. Palace kinda has that "feeling" too.
good luck simply means goodluck
Ohhhhh, horse shoe pit. I don't want to tell you what I thought you were typing!
Yes, ive been to East View. A while ago though. I dont remember much about the place.
Is Palace Ave right near Palace Park? Could it be near the street?
where can i find a saint paul park guide book? Anyone?
actually the yellow pages in front tells you lots
I agree with Jorge that they simply meant Good Luck with that, either as a well wish, or maybe a taunt, but I don't think its really a clue.
If you look back at past clues, there were times that they didn't mention a park but it was in a park and found there. Since they haven't given us much to go on yet I think it's a small park or rec center.
Yes Palace Ave. runs right next to Palace
Yep. it goes right past it.
yes. palace ave. is on the east border of palace rec center
in 99 I dug out the entire horseshoe pit.
Theres also View Street, and I believe Jefferson is another one, though I dont know what Jefferson would have to do with anything.
I see Palace Rec Ctr (doesn't mention park) has a horshoe pit, and is on 350 View St. and Jefferson "out of view"
GOOD LUCK everybody!
time to go check out some parks!
is the site for The Treasure Hunter's Guide. I believe there is information on there as to how to get one.
Palace is even close to the Pleasant Ice Arena
Allison, would the pp hide the thing in a park that has closing hours?
wolffpac- I think they already have, but i'm never sure
Doesn't every park technically close at dusk or 10pm, or am I wrong?
thanks Ally, i appreciate it
Yes, it is close to Pleasant arena, and thats even closer to Linwood, which I believe is split east and west by 35E
I believe in 1993 it was found in Hidden Falls but according to St. Paul Parks part of the park closes at 9 and the other at 10.
A non-park place would make sense - it's more difficult, plus the first year that it was a medallion and not a treasure chest it was in a non-park place (come full circle being an anniversary year and all)? Too much of a stretch?
So the Park closes? big deal? its not gonna stop us! lol
Daughter was at Hidden Falls last night and a park policeman was there at 9:15, apparently getting ready to close the gates.
With the whole dual thinking thinking nightmare my thought was "think king" or Palace. I find myself now into Hidden.
this is the 50th year and all, and the first clue says "or you wont find the secret item" notice the word "secret" what if its not a medallion nor a treasure chest, what if its a new thing.
That's always been a debate. Actually, technically, most parks have closing hours even though they don't physically close. The only ones that put up impediments I've heard of are Phalen and Hidden Falls. It hasn't been in Phalen since 83 and we don't know if that's why or if its just a coincidence. So its really hard to say how much of a factor that is.
Hidden Falls is dual parks, upper and lower.
Would "circular thinking" relate along with "east and west" relate to the side of the city the medallion is on? In 99 the medallion was on the city's east side, then in 00 it was on the west side. Thus, could it be back on the east side, at Eastview Rec Center?
I'm just thinking...if no one but a few people at the PP know where the medallion is then all the parks would be running as normal. The park police wouldn't know to keep the gates open.
Muldar, that's what I was thinking.
No I don't think it is a stretch - I think it is hidden in the same thing or in the same place. Here another - Prosperity Rec Ctr is near City Cemetary "our 'Beloved' St. Paul". Do not annoy statues - the cemetary headstones. It has horshoe pits an bowling lanes, tennis practice (on your toes), steer clear "Clear Ave" of private ground.
Does anyone remember back in 93 and if the thing was found in the day time?
I believe the Medallion has never been found at night.
Wolff - The Cooler Crew site says it was found at about 12:15am amidst hundreds of diggers.
There is a circular staircase at Harriet. The one (#1) is visible from Harriet. Isn't the park split east and west sides?
TY
ahhhhhhhh, 93, back then they mentioned the park on clue one. them were the days
wasnt that the year it was found at Cherokee?
no, hidden falls. cherokee was 92
the medallion has been found at night
The is also a circular street in Harriet, so duel could also mean dual - a circular street and a circular staircase/side of park
Well, I think I'm going to take off. See everyone later tonight probably.
I liked your "thin" "king" analogy
Is anybody else out there?
Prosperity will mean you dont have a shrinking bank account
yeah, if you take the first letters of clue 2 and put them in order they spell "FAT G" thats what the road at harriet island makes.
Tim_the_Hunter, if it's at Hidden Falls this year then that park is mentioned again in this year's 1st clue.
Hey all you hunters! Ok.... :) I am Michelle aka myonedestiny or Michelle's destiny...
Where is the MEDALLION???? I finally got on the website after having technical problems for 3 days! So..
Where is it?? Michelle
There does seem to be alot of references to banks.
prosperity is the opposite of depression
michelle- we are all pretty sure it is in Como at the frogpond. I think that is where everyone is right now
LOL
Why do people think it's at the frog pond in Como?
I think the Hunter was pulling someone's leg.
Michelle - as for now nobody knows - many different specualtions...
I dont think anybody thinks it is in the frog pond at como
EASTVIEW PLAYGROUND:
Just got home after checking out Hidden Falls, there were a few diggers, seems like a good fit to me ('course I didn't bother digging yet)
Is Harriet Island celebrating an anniversery this year since the rennovation? The xcell energy center and new science museum are on other side from Harriet. I am just throwing some things out to get feed back of what you all think. Some of my co-workers are giving me feedback today. I am just sharing them.
East and West last two years. Circularly, this year back to East.
AW - if you're still there, do you really think Iris is in the mix? I tried to make it work last year - only a few blocks off.
think about it, all the clues fit.
1. como is in st paul, and it is big enough to make this hunt longer
2. there are a few statues to 'not' destroy
3. circular- new carousel amond many other things.
4. a pond is a depression in the ground
note- there are other theories, but you'll hafta join allisons club to see em
A park in the east in SP? What better than Eastview? (It DOES lay out of "view")
Finally, Eastview has the name playground in its name "Playing might put a smile on your face"
I went to the Harriet Island bash - or reopening. There are over 100 plaques on the walkway dedications to whomever - lots of dedications, and of course their circular driveway.
Is it that no one thinks it is at the frog pond, or is it that you arent in the know?
Deb B. for what it's worth (not much, believe me), Harriet Island is still on my list
all that stuff is cool, but I still like Palace
And the Playground at Linwood rec, (not far from Palace) is on a depression.
I love the EAST VIEW PLAYground, espcially if the have "Playing might put a smile on your face" That is one of the best guesses so far!
Man, I can make alot of them work out but that's just it, I have to make them work! The clues should fit fairly easy. Right? I haven't been out to Como yet though.I'm going to go out and scout soon. Thanks Tim.
being depressed is what made this thin king(thinking) thin. maybe is is in his palace?
While you're at the EAST VIEW PLAYground, why not look in the CIRCULAR slide or maybe the CIRCULAR tire swing?
JOE
seriously people, if your in the area of Palace rec center, its worth getting out of your car to check out, cause alotta stuff fits. Hockey rinks, and the rainbow and ice castle on the wall, and horse shoe pits, view street, jefferson street, baseball fields.
I think the next clue will start to make all these others make sense - there are a few good ones - Palace, Como, Harriet, Eastview, one could go nuts! Oh well, I am saved by the time. I have an appt at 7pm
Or maybe we should quit overanalyzing the first four clues, when have they given away all this information. The explainations come out and say: clue one and two said it was in a St. Paul Park and not to destroy property and so on and so on, and then clue three and four have some minuted detail about the area of the park, nothing about where in the park or what it is in or anything like that.
Or possibly under one of the circular basketball hoops?
Has antone been to West Minnehaha Rec Center?
beth- my posts werent directed towards you. I was just kidding! it is a on running joke that we(coolercrew) have. i always tell newbies that it is there, but only if the first and only post they make is "so, where is it". it works, because every year you can make the clues fit.
Tim_the_nephew, what the heck is JOE?
I meant anyone.
NO! see, your wrong, it never said that it was in a park.
I have been to West Minny many times!!
there is a playground in Harriet, and on your toes could mean it is near all those dedication plaques you step on - if you haven't been there - the plaques are part of the walkway.
Birdie, Do you think it would be worth looking at? It's not that big but either is palace.
Yesterday I went out and checked out Oscar Johnson Arena In Energy PARK - on DeCourcey CIRCLE - it had a large PARK-ing lot and had alot of chain -LINK fencing??? the arena would be clue one "TOES" and clue three "FIGURE" skating - and clue four - "PLAYING" could be hockey?? Not a park or a rec cent BUT a public Arena in Energy PARK?? what do you think?
Eat view is also a rec center I think I will go check it out I lve very close I will let you all know what I find out
Possibly, it has baseball/softball fields, Tennis Courts, fence around it. Maybe
Hisory of the JOE, part 1...
Joe medallion was a highly mischievous charecter on this message board in 98, which was the first year of the cooler. He harrassed people, and was an overall pain in the button. He is famous for posing several one letter posts, so he could make a landmark post, like lets say 250, or 2500, or 25000!!!! He did it to get to any number divisible by 10. The tradition stuck, and now we post a JOE whenever the opportunity arrises. Other Joes include...
Palindrome Joe- 1991, or 4554 or 19191, anything that is a palindrome.
Double JOE- 4545, 7878, nuff said
there are all kinds of JOES you will see them all the time
Hey, if you mess it "steer" it spells "Trees" and the word "Leaves" is in #4, and with "stay on your toes" maybe its in a tree.
I'm getting tired of the MSN Crisis! I WANNA CHECK MY MAIL!!
Thank you very much!
Good evenin to you Tim!
Birdie,Thanks I'm going to check it out.
Nuttin honey.........
Yakkity Yakkity Yak! I've never heard that one before.........
REALLY? DAMMIT!!!
That was a real dumb thing I did.
hey Scribe, finish the joke in your second line of info.
joe--oops.
You should see me. I am cooking dinner, making salad for pot-luck for work tomorrow, playing nintendo with my son and checking the chat line. I love it. This is my first time chatting on the net. . I need to get the chores done so I can get out to the parks.
My thinking so far has to be Palace and Hidden Falls. Still early but that are my early thinkings
how about this take....another name for a golf course is links..."Cicular thinking is 1 way of linking"....now how would you play golf with a circular object??....well I'll tell you....Frisbee golf! Frisbees are circular & there is a disc golf course at Highland Park. Also the tee for hole #6 is down in the "Pit" as we disc heads call it, however it is quite a depression. Disc golf targets are round with lots of links of chain on them....
Anyone agree?
A good possibility!
has anyone thought about park by the capitol?
dueling could be reference to the house and senate I94 runs east west gold statues circle dome of the capitol bold and cruel who else would think the governor is bold and cruel? pioneer press? thinking could be in reference to Universtity Ave
hmm what else?
im sure you could see the first national bank sign from the capitol grounds too
Well, I am surprised there in no talking about a "smile face." Usually, these early clues talk about either streets or places near the actual park. So I was thinking about maybe there is a day care across the street which has a smile face on it's sign and a playground outside. But it's too early to know anything yet. Maybe these clues are just more difficult and only thing they are trying to tell us is is that the park is either in west or east St.Paul rather than north or south. I don't know.
Its At Hidden Falls, in one of the clues it said something to the likes of not in sight well not in sight also means it would be hidden and its right by the airport which if i recall seperates St Paul and Minneapolis. Look in clue 3 with the circular and linking, well take the letter C from the first line and link in to the bottom what do you get? CITY. Hidden falls links the City St Paul to Minneapolis!!!!!
i'm sure you can see the "banks" of the river at alot of places too. & I think Harriet is now split into an east & west halves... it seems like there must be another road that goes into the area where they are constructing that ampitheater or band shelter or whatever it is, But playing could refer to playing music, as in a band.
What is "out of View" at Harriet Island?
Its At Hidden Falls, in one of the clues it said something to the likes of not in sight well not in sight also means it would be hidden and its right by the airport which if i recall seperates St Paul and Minneapolis. Look in clue 3 with the circular and linking, well take the letter C from the first line and link in to the bottom what do you get? CITY. Hidden falls links the City St Paul to Minneapolis!!!!!
Another noodle....all the militaristic words in the clues....deploy, destroy,ad infinitum(latin...used in military alot) steer clear, duel, etc.... makes me think of a battleship or maybe a battle creek, which does have an east & west park.
not that i think it is their, but Como has a "one way" street that cirles the lake.........
we're grasping ant staws here does anyone have any real evidence
GFIY - I like your take on the 'Playing' music thing at Harriet or somewhere there is a band shell.
thanks cluemaster......how do you like my disc golf noodle??
I was just at Eastview park doesnt look too bad??
Nice "Battle' reference as well. Boy, where did you come from.
That was your Disc golf too!! Wow
Big
Joe Medallion
Unfortunately, you still have me bouncing all over St. Paul. Nice ideas though
Nice Joe Clue Master-going to the PP tonight?
I liked the (East) River Road and (West) 7th Street tie-in to HF
I should say Easview rec center it is not called a park
I'm pretty sure tonight we'll have the herds properly divided between the parks. Who cares about being the first person to dig actively in your chosen park? If you're wrong, you're in a worse position than you started.
also, if you have seen harriet island since the makeover....there is loads of circular architecture. bike racks, benches, lights. waste cans etc., all seem to have circles in their designs...??
I haven't ruled out Phalen yet either....it has: East shore drive on the east bank & round lake on the west side...
clue #5 should narrow the "playing" field I hope..??..
If the Parks have gates, if there're fragile things there, if the *smell* of the area will apt to be a problem to the public, the medallion will not be hidden there. The PP doesn't care, they don't want problems. I'm concerned about these things w/ Phalen and Como, regardless of how well everything seems to fit.
Phalen has not been gated during the treasure hunt for at least the past 5-6 years....i have been out there at night.
as far as Como goes....I think it is the most common park for the medalion to be hidden over its history.
Hey cluemaster....look for me out there in st paul when you are hunting, I will be wearing a suede T-wolves jacket. I would like to meet you & other cooler crew folks.
both como and highland have had the medallion five times
Okay, has anyone verified that Phalen isn't gated at night this year? I hope not... I'm liking Phalen. :)
Como has snow sculptures and the like, there have been complaints lodged in the past about destruction of properties.
phalen is not gated
I kinda do too Matt.....it has been a long time since Phalen was the site....it seems like it is time.
Hi guys - still slogging - by the looks of it, I might be until the next clue :).
Just a reminder: The film crew is NOT FILMING at McGovern's tonight!
Ahhhhhhhhh..... heck.....who am I kidding.....just name a park & I'll make it fit the clues...I hate those dam clue writers. heheheheh
I just did some reading on the history of the rebirth of Harriet. It gives directions to the park. It mentions getting there from the east and west.
Circular thinking ....Plato will link you to the park...Cherokee? First Bank building visible from up there....anyone..anyone??
The problem with all you non-logical thinkers out there is the dilemma of making everything work for your clues.
If you're looking for something specific, if you're looking at one park because you want it to be that park, you'll always find what you need to make things work. Circular tables, (ahem, no offense Allison :), shrinking, yielding, toes, whatever. You can make anything work.
Keep it simple for a LITTLE while longer... Then see where the common ideas lie and use logic to solve the problems. :)
Another Noodle is Hillcrest...Bank = Hill Non-Depression = Crest ...East and West Ball Fields....Playground....Thinking = Library...Circular Not in View...Highland Water Towers at the Top of Ford Parkway which Borders Park.....
Just some Noodling
Nobody was at Highland around 4:00 when I drove through there
Hello out there! ~ this is Star from the East Side. Where are all the diggers? Haven't seen too much commotion out there anywhere and I have checked out a lot of sites.
By the way...What is up with the Mardi Gras Party...Where is it???
Hi Star, It suddenly got very quiet in here
BOO!
Hello there MGM
Where is everyone???
They're all digging, time to go!
erm.
Matt -- I agree; forcing the clues to fit your favorite park will only lead to frostbite and frustration.
(That being said, "east and west ... only one is the proper place" could be interpreted as implying the old saying, "east shall be east and west shall be west, and never the twain shall meet," which leads to Mark Twain, which leads to Huck Finn, which leads to the Mississippi River. Or maybe not.)
I don't know about you guys but I don' think this thing is going to be found for at least three more days so I think the best thing to do is visit some of the parks that it could be at so you know the surroundings and then just wait for a couple more clues before you actually start digging
agreed.
Yo,Yo,Yo in a botttle of rum! A big hey to me hommies out der!LOL!
I crack myself up!LOL!
The medaillion was found at Hidden Falls in 93 and I'm pretty sure it has gates on it.
The medallion has gates on it????????????????Wow!
Hidden Falls, lol
Oh! That'd be pretty cool if they hid it there cause that park has gates on it too!LOL!
Sorry wolfie I'm in a mood........:)
Anybody like West Minnehaha or Wilder?
Had something very interesting happen to Green, myself, and the film crew today at Phalen....
I'm with wolfe, I think Hidden Falls.
Well are you gonna tell me?????????????
share, please!
anyone have Palace on the list?
Jake! Don't be a butthead!!!!
palace is on my reserve list as is groveland
Clue #4 East and west are part of our test though only one is the proper place. West of the River is MPLS and the proper place on the east side of the river is St.Paul.
Heard talk about Palace this afternoon but no one was willing to say why, you sometimes these people get awfully secretive and thats not why we are here!
The crew wanted to get some random shots of a person digging by themselves, and when we were finished, I was the first to get back to the parking lot and there was a guy sitting in his car with the car running. At first I thought he was looking at a map, but he was reading the paper!!!!! Green asked him if he was a spotter, he got ashen, a little peeved and said "I don't know what a spotter is!" Green and I said thanks and that was it. An interesting side note, it was a state vehicle.
