Basketball would be good for "keep on your toes". Also circular thinking could mean that it is hidden the very same place it was hidden another year. Who would think of that?

This is for CRAP FACE:

McDonough Rec Area is borders Wheelock Parkway on the north, immediately west of I35-E. There is an access road there that leads into McDonough Housing and 35E. The rest of the housing area is bordered on the west by Jackson St. and south by Arlington. And yes the K-Mart is just south of the housing area. It's a big open field that's just behind the Mississippi Arts School.

Medallion-less,

I got that information from something I remember reading on the Cooler Crew site about the Medallion. Before that it was a metal coin that was obviously the same one used every year because you could see all the nicks in it from shovels over the years.

And personally, yes I believe it won't be in a park, more likely a rec center.

I think that's the thing. They want to make it harder by using something people aren't as familiar with, and maybe can't get information on as easily. If you have "The Treasure Hunter's Guide" it does list all the rec centers though and gives you maps for the vast majority of them.

this kind of a stretch, but theres also Aldrich Arena on whitebear avenue, and thats right in the "hillcrest" shopping area, by "hillcrest" golf course in maplewood, and those hillcrests could be "linking" to that "Hillcrest" rec-center in the Highland area, since that too is near a golf course.

That's always been a debate. Actually, technically, most parks have closing hours even though they don't physically close. The only ones that put up impediments I've heard of are Phalen and Hidden Falls. It hasn't been in Phalen since 83 and we don't know if that's why or if its just a coincidence. So its really hard to say how much of a factor that is.

Would "circular thinking" relate along with "east and west" relate to the side of the city the medallion is on? In 99 the medallion was on the city's east side, then in 00 it was on the west side. Thus, could it be back on the east side, at Eastview Rec Center?

Mulder - 04:32pm Jan 24, 2001 CST (#13905 of 28288) Mark Reply

I'm just thinking...if no one but a few people at the PP know where the medallion is then all the parks would be running as normal. The park police wouldn't know to keep the gates open.

No I don't think it is a stretch - I think it is hidden in the same thing or in the same place. Here another - Prosperity Rec Ctr is near City Cemetary "our 'Beloved' St. Paul". Do not annoy statues - the cemetary headstones. It has horshoe pits an bowling lanes, tennis practice (on your toes), steer clear "Clear Ave" of private ground.

Or maybe we should quit overanalyzing the first four clues, when have they given away all this information. The explainations come out and say: clue one and two said it was in a St. Paul Park and not to destroy property and so on and so on, and then clue three and four have some minuted detail about the area of the park, nothing about where in the park or what it is in or anything like that.

Hisory of the JOE, part 1...

Joe medallion was a highly mischievous charecter on this message board in 98, which was the first year of the cooler. He harrassed people, and was an overall pain in the button. He is famous for posing several one letter posts, so he could make a landmark post, like lets say 250, or 2500, or 25000!!!! He did it to get to any number divisible by 10. The tradition stuck, and now we post a JOE whenever the opportunity arrises. Other Joes include...

Palindrome Joe- 1991, or 4554 or 19191, anything that is a palindrome.

Double JOE- 4545, 7878, nuff said

Well, I am surprised there in no talking about a "smile face." Usually, these early clues talk about either streets or places near the actual park. So I was thinking about maybe there is a day care across the street which has a smile face on it's sign and a playground outside. But it's too early to know anything yet. Maybe these clues are just more difficult and only thing they are trying to tell us is is that the park is either in west or east St.Paul rather than north or south. I don't know.

The frenzy is upon us. Trust your instincts, trust your eyes. There're as many dollars to the reward as there are wrong directions to it.

I'm pretty sure tonight we'll have the herds properly divided between the parks. Who cares about being the first person to dig actively in your chosen park? If you're wrong, you're in a worse position than you started.

also, if you have seen harriet island since the makeover....there is loads of circular architecture. bike racks, benches, lights. waste cans etc., all seem to have circles in their designs...??

If the Parks have gates, if there're fragile things there, if the *smell* of the area will apt to be a problem to the public, the medallion will not be hidden there. The PP doesn't care, they don't want problems. I'm concerned about these things w/ Phalen and Como, regardless of how well everything seems to fit.

Phalen has not been gated during the treasure hunt for at least the past 5-6 years....i have been out there at night.

Gonna find it yet... - 06:24pm Jan 24, 2001 CST (#14011 of 28288) Mark Reply

as far as Como goes....I think it is the most common park for the medalion to be hidden over its history.

Okay, has anyone verified that Phalen isn't gated at night this year? I hope not... I'm liking Phalen. :)

Como has snow sculptures and the like, there have been complaints lodged in the past about destruction of properties.

I just did some reading on the history of the rebirth of Harriet. It gives directions to the park. It mentions getting there from the east and west.

The problem with all you non-logical thinkers out there is the dilemma of making everything work for your clues.

If you're looking for something specific, if you're looking at one park because you want it to be that park, you'll always find what you need to make things work. Circular tables, (ahem, no offense Allison :), shrinking, yielding, toes, whatever. You can make anything work.

Keep it simple for a LITTLE while longer... Then see where the common ideas lie and use logic to solve the problems. :)

how many medallion hunters does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Matt -- I agree; forcing the clues to fit your favorite park will only lead to frostbite and frustration.

(That being said, "east and west ... only one is the proper place" could be interpreted as implying the old saying, "east shall be east and west shall be west, and never the twain shall meet," which leads to Mark Twain, which leads to Huck Finn, which leads to the Mississippi River. Or maybe not.)

I don't know about you guys but I don' think this thing is going to be found for at least three more days so I think the best thing to do is visit some of the parks that it could be at so you know the surroundings and then just wait for a couple more clues before you actually start digging

The crew wanted to get some random shots of a person digging by themselves, and when we were finished, I was the first to get back to the parking lot and there was a guy sitting in his car with the car running. At first I thought he was looking at a map, but he was reading the paper!!!!! Green asked him if he was a spotter, he got ashen, a little peeved and said "I don't know what a spotter is!" Green and I said thanks and that was it. An interesting side note, it was a state vehicle.
