Just a scouting mission - don't have time to dig.
Cheers Leah! Good Hunting Spirit!
I swear EVERY year I go and read the meanings of the clues AFTER the hunt and prior to thatI try to read more into them than there really is. How not to do this and be right? Beyond me.
Can someone tell me if I am correct in saying that they close the gates at Phalen Park every night?
AW..The absense of water clues doesn't eliminate any of the parks though. They still want to make it a long hunt.
Hello! In the past they didn't say anything about a park but it was in a park. They are just trying to throw us off. I think!?%#
I don't think you can ElseaMae!
Elsea..keep reminding yourself that you know better than to read too deeply into these clues. Ponder, but don't agonize.
AND to top it off the two years that they hide it in parks like practically ON TOP of my house, I'm all wrapped up in some other issue not to be in the hunt. So obviously it's no where near me this time.
Til later comrades...back to the office.
Guide out.
Allison - Hidden Falls does have a circular reference - the Ford Plant is right up the hill - all the wheels are circular. They used that reference when it was there in '93.
The lack of a playground is what bugs me. Otherwise, I think it fits well.
TTHG - Hey as long as I am not the only one not sleeping at night over all this I'm fine. LOL
LOL all
Back to work for me.
Dang, I need to go and actually do some work for a bit! Don't they know what time of year it is? hehe. be back in a bit.
Ill be diggin at hidden falls tonight hope to see some of you there. remember to wear white.
I think clue #1 references what the medallion is hidden in - it's in "place for gold" = treasure chest, or "keep on your toes" could mean it's in a sock, but they just did that a couple of years ago at Cherokee.
Clue #2 says "steer" clear - another, albeit stretching, reference to the Ford plant where they make pickup trucks
Clue #3 says "Circular" thinking and "out of view" = Ford plant and HIDDEN falls
The bank reference meaning river bank is a bit of a stretch too, but ya never know.
Kid Minneapolis I like that park a lot. I have dug ther since day 1. I can guess the East but how about the WEST
Yes they close the gates at phalen each night
Hidden Falls is also very near WEST 7th street on the far EAST end of Mississippi River Blvd. (although the maps call is Miss. River Blvd. SOUTH)
I see the headline now. 50th Medallion "Hidden"... oh well now I'm going a little too far. But...
Now I'm trying to figure out the remember to wear white ... ? ? ?
Just a marker.
Helpful hint to anyone that doesn't have the time to read all the posts.
If I don't want to trudge through all the posts and instead hit the recent button (600+ since last time I read), for some reason it won't mark my current spot after I hit the recent button.
I've found that if I make a post it "bookmarks" this spot in the thread as the most currently read post.
Hope this makes sense and helps those of you having the same problem.
Hey everyone! Well, I just got back from the store. I got the apple cider, 50 granola bars, and loads of cookies. I did some thinking... The hot apple cider will be given free. The cookie packs (16 cookies in a pack) will be 50 cents. The Granola Bars (2 cinnamon bars) will be 50 cents. The hand warmers will be 75 cents each. Does that sound good? If you have any suggestions or questions, post them on my message board at my site. I'm not one who likes to slog alot, so you would be doing me a favor.
Derick,
Scribe says "Thank You" and that you are a sweetheart!
:-)
I take it the prices are fair scribe?
More than fair, that's why she called you a sweetheart. Otherwise she would have called you a......money hungry bastard?
:-)
This is my first time here in the cooler, but I have been an AVID hunter since '92 at Cherokee.
There has been discussion on how the circles could tie to Hidden Falls. The sixth clue to the 1993 treasure hunt (which was found there) read:
Clue 6 You can see them If you look up high. Some perfect circles Are in the sky. This controversially difficult clue refers to the orange aviation warning balls noticeable on power lines over the Mississippi River.
Hey Riddler: Just curious, but what site did you get that clue from? I'm just curious if people are using the clue research section of my site...
I have looked at your site (bravo), but this one I got from the CoolerCrew site. And, I also have photocopies and papers from the 1993 hunt.
People are starting to trickle into phalen. Think their to close to wheelock if its there
thanx:)
This will be my fifth year looking since I moved here from Virgina Beach, VA. I love it. I look forward to this every year now. My five year old son, Gunner is hooked also. I have a hunch the park is near by where I work. I am sticking to that and going to look on friday after work and will look every day until found. The word deploy made me think it is where I will be looking. I will let you all know.
Do you live by Phalen?
Derick - Suggestion for your Apple Cider idea. You need one of those back pack things that can carry liquid. I have seen them full of coffee downtown when the marathon is on. I have also seen them at the state fairgrounds. They look just like a backpack and have a holder for cups too. I don't know where you can get one, but something to look into so that you are even more mobile.
As for the East/West thing. I am not very good with clues or with whats in all the parks, but correct me if I am wrong. Isn't Highland Park in two pieces. Could it be that one side of the park is on the Eastside of a street and the other side of the park is on the Westside of a street? I don't know the streets around Highland, but I think it has a picnic shelter on one side of the street and the disc golf course on the other. There is a little bridge you can go on that crosses the street. Am I thinking of the correct park?
deb: you gonna tell us where?
close
Whats up yall, im back up in here. That "Crap Face" dude hasnt been here yet today has he?
J: It's called a camelback hydration system. I have something like that from the Army. The only problem is it would only be enough for me. I may or may not use it, but I wouldn't use it to give apple cider in the field. That is a good idea though!
Here's an idea: why dont they just incorporate no golf courses into the rules and then they wouldnt have to waste a clue telling us that its not on a golf course! or am I asking to much?
So whato do you people think about Palace and Linwood?
I am thinking Harriet Island. This is just my first instinct.
Re Highland...it is split North and South by Montreal.
You Ninjas were mentioning parks that are split in half by stuff, well, last night, when me and my homies were lookin, we checked Linwood, and its cut sorta in half by 35E
TCBOO, I suspect the reason may be that not everyone reads the rules in detail. On the other hand, just about everyone reads the clues.
Allison your not out looking today or did you already
Correct me if I'm wrong - Isn't Mississippi River Blvd ALSO East River Road? As in (East) River road and (West) 7th Street. Both meet at HF> I've said this before but people keep referencing the East as the East side of the river when it's actually on the North side of the river there where the river bends anyway. Oh well, just an idea...
I was driving around Phalen today and didn't see many people yet
Ok then, dont anyone answer my questions all at once!
Hey hey hey! Im here! just got back from work. How is everyone (except Violent J) and what are the topics of the day?
AW - Not to ? your insights, but are you positive about your reason for the East/West? I love that idea better than all of them if it totally fits and it's not off by a block or 2.
3 years ago cooler crew members started wearing white to identify themselves so we could say high while digging.
So is anyone gonna holla at me about Linwood and Palace or do i just naturally assume that you dont like clowns. (I alreday know one of you dont)
yeah, I'll "holla" at you AHHHH!!!! ITS A CLOWN!!! lol!
Anyone else?
c'mon, do we have to put up with this fighting between you two again?...
hey, Ninja, im not fighting i was simply asking what you all thought of Palace and Linwood, and then I got no answer, so im talkin to the only person talking back at me, even though he musta gotten outta the wrong side of bed today.
wearing white what? Being its cold out whatever I wear will be immediatly covered by a jacket / parka/ blanket/ all of the above. Unless your talking about outer wear, in which case I dont believe I could have ordered my flame thrower in white.
Yes, ok, look, "Violent J" lets make a truce (for now anyways, lol)....now what about Palace and Linwood?
well, I already posted that Linwood was cut off ( east and west) by 35E. I dont know what else might fit there, besides havin a playground. but its really close to Palace and Palace had a buncha stuff that fit in, a horseshoe pit, a rainbow, hockey rink, baseball fields, etc....so I dont know. What do you people think ANYONE??
I dont know about Linwood, I havent been there yet, but its worth checking out, as long as its a park and its in Saint Paul. I dont like Palace though, you know how every year, you get "that feeling" that your in the right park? well, Palace doesnt give me that. I like Phalen, naturally, because i live so close, im like right across the street. But Highland might be good also.
Barbie, no I'm not looking right now. I'm at work today but will probably be looking after work.
Clue Master, I am 98% sure about the east-west thing, as least according to the map I used and my personal experience as to where that line is.
Violent J- I don't think Linwood extends beyond 35E, so I don't think the east west would mean that. As for Palace, I don't know enough about it, but the only things I've seen linking it to the clues so far seem to be stretches.
what about McDonough? It is sandwiched between west arlington and east arlington?
still like the depressed means a hill
depressed = DEEP-REST = COMA = COMO???
McDonough? wheres that? I know a McMurray, but I dont think I know McDonough
A hill is sort of the opposite of depressed. A valley is more like a depression.
As for depressed = Como, my opinion is that anything that requires more than one step is not likely to be right, and that requires 3 steps.
well they said that it will be tougher this year.
Hey, Ninjas, I was thinkin Como last night too, but my associate Shaggy 2 Dope, informed me that Como is where all the "winter carnival festivities" take place, and they were all bitchy the last time it was hidden there, cause everything got destroyed.
Just got caught up on all the action since last night. I like Hidden falls but for some reason I'm still stuck on Crosby. In any case, I think the East/West clue refers to the banks of the river and ye ol' treasure will be found along one side of the river, east or west?
McDonough @ 1544 Timberlake St. Paul. between Jackson and Rice. It is the dividing point of east and west Arlington
Last night someone brought up West Minnehaha- hs anyone been by there?
But I mean hey, if you wanna search out there go ahead, its cool, cause if its not there, everyone that actually is in the right park is closer and will have to deal with less people.
PalinaJOE!
St. Paul is only located on one side of the river...
All -
I answered my own question by doing a little research. FYI - Not only is Highland park split North/South by Montreal. It also is split East/West by Edgecumbe. Bank = Edge of something? Maybe there is a connection. Thoughts?
I agree with your friend about Como. They have the snow slide, the snow sculptures and the ice maze there. Plus it was there just 4 years ago.
As for the hunt being tougher this year, I don't think they meant the clues would be trickier. After all, I doubt the clue writer became suddenly smarter (unless there's a new one?) I think the plan was to just be more vague and use a small park that most people have never even heard of.
Anyone notice that steer also could be trees. Stay on yours toe, maybe its not buried this year.
Could Be...Highland Has the Two Blue water Towers (Circular Thinking) and I believe clue #2 says there is golf course/statue but do not go there (do not annoy) and steer clear of rivate ground (Police station, Stadium, swimming pool, water towers, Arena and it's parking lot)
Has anyone been to Battle Creek rec-center?
but they say those things every year!!
circular could be the trunk of the tree????????
CF - isn't that Maplewood?
Hey Allison...They could just have written that phrase to throw everybody's speculation in to a mass of confusion.
I still think come full circle and put it at Highland where the first medallion (well, treasure chest) was hidden...
No, it doesnt say that there "is" a statue/golf course, it says to stay away from them.
Battle Creek is St. Paul bordering Maplewood
It would be awful bold to put it at COMO where everyone would be and to make it last. Also face=cafe. There that cafe there too
I still think come full circle and put it at Highland where the first medallion (well, treasure chest) was hidden...
Yes, but Battle Creek rec-center and part of the park are bordering Maplewood, WoodBury, and St. Paul. It links three cities.
Got to go. I'll catch up about 11:30 p.m. after work.
CF...I agree...but still think it didn't say there isn't one...it said stay off or away from. Last year the clue more distinctly said "Not in a park with a golf course" this one feels like it says "please leave them alone"...
MacGrove Man - Cherokee and Harriet Island are on the West Side. Actually when Harriet was actually an island it wasn't on the east or west side. hmmmm.
Part of Battle creek is in maplewood and part is in St. paul
Como didn't feel right the other night out scouting... Bank HAS to be prominent since it has already been stated twice...
DG...I forgot abot the West Side...thank you for enlightening me...
It says your bank account won't be shrinking-maybe yeilding(maybe a yeild sign nearby)
I was just at battle creek nothing realy fits good there I was also by Phalen a few people looking there and a few at mounds? Who knows lol
Maybe yeilding is opposite of shrinking in the banking business
Mac, I sort of agree on leave it alone but it COULD be a park w/out a course. If you narrow it to one with a course, maybe you should think Highland because it says "coursES", PLURAL and theres ball golf and disc golf there
My opinion, I dont think its at Mounds, after what happend there last time.
CF you are probably right but now we are eliminating parks right and left permanently and that means what for the future of the hunt...?!?
Plus Highland Has Two Golf Courses...the 9 and the 18...both which are WEST of Edgecumbe Rd...So stay to the East
Just a reminder to everyone- register your button by tomorrow 1/25
The people at mounds were all by the light tower thing I dot think it is there either I think they are thinking because it go in circle and surrounded by fence?
Disc golf is on the east isn't it?
What restrains a river?? A BANK.
Go wolfy, I'm with ya! It's gotta be associated with the river.
whaddaya mean, "what for the future of the hunt?" theres LOTS of other parks (or rec-centers) they can put it at.
Go wolfy, I'm with ya! It's gotta be associated with the river.
Anyone thrown around Palace?
Another East West Thought...Hidden Falls is two parks...Hidden Falls 1 is just below the Ford Plant and just downstream is Lower Hidden Falls which is actualy east as the Mighty Mississippi turns there...However, the gates are locked at Lower Hidden all winter long.
Ford Parkway LINKS St.Paul and Mpls.
Go wolfy, I'm with ya! It's gotta be associated with the river.
All these clues point to one park.
Yes Disc Golf is on te East at HP
Hey Wolfpac, if they all lead to one park, which one is it?
Sorry for the re-posts. Still learnin'
Hidden Falls
Y Hidden Falls?
you gonna tell us why?
What is your Take on Circular Thinking associated with Hidden Falls
CRAP FACE:I hope you chose that monicker yourself.Isn't that some 'new wave' group?
yes i chose this "monicker" myself, and i wouldnt know, New Wave sucks.
if the medallion is in hidden falls, the circular references are unlikely to be the power line balls over the river. for those not paying attention, they were used the last time it was there.
Hey Birdie have you been to Palace to look around
Would they reuse such an obvious reference????
Nope but I live across the street so I know the area well
What about the playing reference for Hidden Falls, what would that be refering to?
hey David Hulbert, you gotta watch that "crap face" if you get on his bad side, you'll never get off.
Me too
How do you get to Hidden Falls from the East?Does Shepherd Road take you there?Does Shepherd go all the way through now?
That's Cool
doubtful mgm, but it would be bold to do so
Yes...Shepard Rd turns into Mississippi River Blvd down by Buca and Hwy 5
Yeah, you would know, huh Violent J? thats what you do best is get on people backsides...WHOOPS i meant bad side
Thanks for the warning Violent J-you sound like a badass yourself.
Lower Hidden Falls is right there 1 block ahead. Hidden Falls is a Mile or so farther
Leah, are any of the clues making you think Palace?
Yeah, im a badass, im a BadAss Wicked Clown!
I am new here and have a question how do I see all the new maessages? do I have to keep going to top and clicking all msgs or what? I am confused lol
click the last blue #
Hey, Violent J, i thought we called a truce before?
lele - right mouse click - reload/refresh
click on the all msgs button
no, Crappy, "you" called a truce, I just didnt agree to it. I just stopped fighting with you, cause I was makin you look bad.
Thanks alot that is much easier
Well Birdie - Just a few- VIEW-View St. Circular thinking- I'm not sure what smoke stack by the river, but it has red lights circling it, the building has the mural w/ the rainbow and the Ice Palace, it is on what is considered St.Paul's WEST end.
Maureen Hursey are you here?
I was also thinking about those! :)
Being that I am new to water cooler what exactly is it how does it work does everyone know each other here?
this is my second year at the cooler - my 9th year in the hunt.
Nope, not everyone knows everyone, some do. Just share your ideas about the clues.
This is my 3rd year in the cooler & 20th hunt
This is my first yeay in coole but I have been hunting along long time
I dont know anyone here, and no one knows me.
I am sure we have all seen each other in a park or too at one time or another Lol
t
Not me, I go out in the dark of night, when everyone else in asleep or in here posting stuff about what their gonna do in the morning.
Greetings fellow diggers!
at night huh J? what park you gonna be at tonight? what time should I be there, and what will you be wearing?
Greetings
Hello inspector
Just a thought...Perhaps East/West refers to something like ballfields and the last line of todays clue says "Playing" will put a smile on your face...
hey CF, howd ya get your name?
Birdie...stuck in Hibbing????...
Thats for me to know and you to NOT find out :) but lemme say this, if you see some people digging with clown makeup on, thats me and my Juggalo homies.
Yup, for school.
Recalling last year and how I never did like the way this water cooler posting works....
I am strongly thinkng Highland. Here are some of the clues I have heard on the Cooler in the last few days. A number of them point to Highland.
1. GOOD LUCK - in the first clue. Horseshoes mean good luck and there are horseshoe pits at Highland.
2. Golf Courses - do not annoy. Highland has 2 golf courses in addition to the disc course.
3. Circular linking is one way of linking - Discs are circles. Links - golf course, chain links on the holes for the disc golf course.
4. East/West and "Bank" - Highland park is separated East and West by Edgecumbe. Bank = Edge hence Edgecumbe.
5. Bank may also mean the bank of the creek/stream/river that runs through Highland. I don't know the name of it, but I remember walking over a bridge at that park.
6. Someone also mentioned that the golf courses are on the West side so that we would need to stay on the East side.
7. There are lots of Trees in Highland park - pointing to "leaves".
8. I think there is a playground there also. - pointing to "playing"
9. Someone also mentioned that there are some places of private ground near Highland.
10. Someone else mentioned that circular thinking my relate to the fact that Highland was the site of the first Hunt.
Anyone have any other thoughts that point to Highland. Or does anyone have thoughts that could persuade me elsewhere?
WHAT?? you wear clown makeup out to dig?? WTF?!?!?! Why would you do that?
hey crap, what kinda makeup do you wear?
Tim, what makes you think I wear any makeup at all?
Jokysu...Thanks for combining the thoughts on HP Can those Keen on other parks please give a similar layot of their thoughts
If my card has not been sent in yet, is there another way to register my button?
hey y'all...I'm back! What's new?
It only needs to be POSTMARKED by Jan 25th
Come on Crappy, tell us! we wont let your mommy know that you use her supply.
Just get your entry card in the mail by today
WHAT IS THIS?!?!? pick on Crap Face day??
sure seems that way dont it? :)
Is anybody thinking about the Medallion Here or is this just an opportunity tho Hash each other????
I have a hard time getting psyched to start digging until I know the park for sure...bad habit of mine!
macgrove...exactly. lets talk medallion
I am trying too but I am stuck Lol
Yeah, of course we're all here to talk about the medallion, but whats left to say, everyone has torn everything apart already and we wont know anything new til tonight, so were having fun in the mean time.
MGM...I've thought it was in Highland all along, but I think that is wishful thinking on my part. It is so much easier to go out at night when it is only a few blocks away.
what about the first letters in every line of clue 3...when unscrambled they spell city...silly idea, but it could happen.
Mac I am... and if tomorrows clue helps my thinking I'll be *cough cough* sick for work tomorrow. LOL
I've got to run now...I'll swing through Highland along the way and report back later
circular thinking=king chili currant
Good luck to ALL!!!
ElseaMae....I feel a cold coming on also...*grin*
circular thinking-crucial rink thing
Inspector - I'm thinking it could last a while, into next week for sure.
I am going to check out McDonough park on my way home after work. Anybody else every heard of this park or even seen it? I have not but I have a 'feeling'!! It is the divider for east and west arlington?
hey, so what's everyone thinking for the moment, mine is battle or highland
Palace- this way- Ya Dig
Ya Dig....I'm sold on Highland for now
I DIG
ME DIG
If McDonough is where I think it is, its a bit west of the dividing line between east and west. I live just off Arlington so its pretty close to me, and its not much of a park, just kind of a big open space. I believe you're on the right track though.
Wheres McDonough? is it by them housing projects by Kmart on maryland?
heres a thought for Highland
circular thinking...what comes around goes around....the first medallion was found in Highland.
InspectorDigs - I also want it to be Highland since I live right by there too. You never know, we may get lucky!
Birdie so I suppose your stuck on palace, since you live by there
I feel pretty confident that its not in a park they have used before. I think they want to try and make it more difficult by using something that people are not familiar with.
I like the chances at Palace too.
This is the year Mulder! I got that diggin feelin
Ya, I have to be. :)
in 99 I went to palace, ittiz possible, maybe. as of now, I say Battle Creek
WHERE IS MCDONOUGH???
Battle Creek what? rec-center? middle school? park?
Hello AW!....good to see you again...I had a different handle last year on here.
I was just at battle nothing really fit there though??
park. I wont rule out the school, but I highly doubt it, and I dont even know of the rec center
Is hiding it in Highland TOO predictable? I'm not saying I'm just asking. First hunt and a big anniversary...it doesn't sit too well. But I can also see the headlines...
JOE!!!!!!
Crap, J, shut the hell up. If one can get upset because of what someone types about them, professional help is needed.
Hidden Falls sounds nice... But not as nice as Battle Creek, so far. I like Como, but agree with the fact that the events will discourage any involvement. Also, what about the Western park a few blocks off the Capitol? I wouldn't forget that...
Highland park is starting to come back into the running again, lots of references that can be found there. Unfortunately Highland is one of the parks that has a black mark next to it because everything and anything fits there. I'll need much more specific evidence to fit.
Tonight, I'm going to peruse Battle Creek, Phalen, and Hidden Falls, if time allows. Then we'll see what tonight's clue turns up. Maybe a little digging is in order. :)
I've verified that Kowalski's (near Grand & Hamline, open 24 hours) carries Red Bull and just about anything else you'd need to concoct some energy for some late night digging benders. :)
-Matt
The rec center is further down Ruth from the school.
Is there a way to have this screen refresh to the last 5 or 10 posts??????
what about the fact that one part of battle (East) is not in st. paul and the onther part is (west) making that the proper place
Who were you last year Inspector?
I believe I went by blackbart?
MATT, no! you shut the hell up hound dog! I havent dissed anyone in a while, im just sittin here talkin about clues, and maybe you need some professional help, maybe you need a professional ass kicking, for coming in here and yelling at people for no reason at all, what did I do to you in the first place?
I find the best way to refresh is to use the blue underlined post# of the most recent post. Then it gives you a new page with that as the first post and any susequent posts following.
J: You're annoying. And you're not doing it to me exclusively.
And I could use a good ass kicking, I can tell ya that for sure :)
I think we also had some other "ties" if I'm not mistaken?
Have you been out diggin yet or just deciphering?
I agree (for once) with J, I havent fought with anyone in a while either. no can someone please tell me, "Where McDonough is"?
Seems like in previous years...early on in the clues they make referenec to "what" it's hidden in. Any ideas as of yet?
So far I've gotten to a "bold" detergent container, a bank envelope (or some bank related material), shrinkwrap.
Thanks, I try to be annoying whenever possible. :)
Maybe they would put it at Highland because we would be leery about it because it WAS the sight of the first medallion. You never know what the clue writers are thinking or what they think we will be thinking. :) I personally don't have any idea which park it's at.
Ok Inspector, I do think I remember those "ties" now. :) I haven't been digging, though I did some scouting last night at a particular park that I like.
CF- If McDonough is where I think it is, its essentially on Arlington and Jackson on the north end of St. Paul, about half a mile east of Rice St.
I like the chances at Palace, possibly Battle Creek, highland, although, im gonna need more stuff for that, Hidden Falls aint out yet. Parts of Phalen, and the list goes on.
Mulder...I think the key is not to read too deep into the clues...It seems that many people here try too hard to make things fit to every word.
Probably far fetched- maybe it's in something w/ MN Lynx-"linking"
Yeah, I know from past experience about reading too deep. Usually I just get lucky about the park and then think, "Oh, that's what that clue meant," when they publish the meanings.
Does Scully help dig with you??
Lynx? isnt that the Womens basketball team? could it be on a basket ball court? or possibly hidden in on the rim (circular) or maybe even in a basket ball.
So, does this medallion always look the same every year? Same size, color, material, etc? how big is it anyhow?
I believe its literally the same Medallion every year, about two inches in diameter and half an inch thick made of a clear, blue-tinted acrylic-based plastic.
