Green--Negative on the paper. Plastic would stick better, and would be rain and snow proof. Keep the plastic light. Put baffles in it to allow wind to pass through. Or, here's a thought. Use that foam poster board stuff they sell at art supply stores, and put MAGNETS on the back. That way you will have minimal car damage--a little electrical tape on the back of the magnet helps prevent scratches--and you can be "on duty" and "off duty" as much as you need to. Just some thoughts from my long ago high school days in Lake Wobegone.
Good morning hunters! It's SNOWING!!!!!! I guess my new wife will be making me chip away at all that melt and freeze during the hunt!!!
Dave,I've always found you both handsome and handy!!:) Happy snowy sunday!!
What a good first half of the game!!
Hey everybody. I'm back and busier than ever with school. You think that will stop me from digging? I think not. Go Cooler Crew!!!
This wet slop that's outside is gonna make for one *miserable* dig!
Thanks for the ideas/suggestions, Allison!
Howdy, Wookie!
DDave... One prob: there can be *no* damage/scratchs as the CC Mobile is on loan to us. What about just plain white sheets, tied on with rope? Then what would we use to write with that wouldn't run in the rain/snow?
And if plastic's used, what could we write with that wouldn't smear off?
As far as "on" and "off" duty, whatever's put on there has got to be able to stay on when "on duty" as we go tooling around town! Can't be a'flappin' in the *breeze* when we go barreling like a bat outta h$ll after The Med.
MJ, I got your Rooster Sauce today!
Joe!!!
Hey Gre! How is you?
If the rumor is true that the clues aren't coming out on the net till' 12, it'll be good footage to get all the people at the PP, and then all rushing to the park. Also, maybe the crew should use a bit more 'teamwork' with the clues this year, not only does it make good movieage, but it'll improve our chances too!
Green - don't worry too much on the Cooler-mobile stuff. We can maybe just stick some signs on the side windows from the *inside*....won't need those windows for visibility driving, and then stick one in the back when parked.
Just an idea.
What type of mobile are you guys gonna borrow?
It's a small Winnebago - on a VW chassis. It's called a Rialta.
Coolio! So you guys have volunteered to hall the film crew around?
If the crew desires, I will call in a couple of clues early--I live 2 blocks from paper. Someone will have to be willing to transcribe for cooler crew members--I have a cell phone. Can't use wirless laptop, 'cause there just isn't room in lobby of paper to setup. We can probably wait until crucial clues become available--just let me know.
COOL dave. that would be cool, I will transcribe.
tim* suggests we should use more teamwork. Ah, if only it were that easy. First you have to get everyone to agree on how to interpret the clues.
so after we find it this year? we each get a doller of the 10k, since theirs so many of us right?
oh, and good hella cool party of course
UPDATE on the HTML situation...
I was a little bummed out to find that I could not personalize my posts this year (heck, thats part of what makes the cooler so neat: the personal aspect)..so I wrote to webmaster and asked why the directions still indicate we can do HTML, but we really cant. In his email response he stated that the web hosting service had been contacted to fix the problem, and to let him know if it still wasnt working on Friday the 12th...guess what, it still isnt, so I am going to write him a little email right now...with any luck maybe we can get this little problem fixed.
No no Allison, I meant that we use teamwork in relaying only the later clues once we all are at the same park. We meet at a point and get the clue, then go. It is starting to not make as much sence as I thought it did when I thought of it.
If we're all in the same park, hehe. But don't we do that a bit already? I remember talking to Mom and Dad last year around midnight on clue 5 while I was out at Phalen testing some "brilliant" theory of mine. At Conway not everyone was there at midnight, nor were they digging in the same spots, so it was a bit hard to gather. Never got to that point last year as by then we were already wrapping up the Pity party. Its probably a safe bet though that no one from the Cooler Crew will be left in the dark unless they're in a park by themselves.
Yeppers, thats why I was kind of taking it back. It was just a thought.
Green are we still working together?? I'm there every Friday morning at Ignatia. Haven't seen you there yet, but they never let me leave my cage when I'm there
Hi to the rest. Does anybody have a list of new memorials to Bruce Vento?? I have a feeling just north of a new plaque, bench, or tree ... dedicated to him, is the resting place for my medallion
Now there's a thought, New Daddy.
There is also another article about Snoopy's in today's paper.
So much to noodle....
The only problem with noodling Snoopy's is that you can easily plug them into clues since there are so many. It is not to say they WON'T use them, it will just be kinda tough.
well, tim, i think the only statues that are really applicable to the hunt are slapshot, down at the highland arena, and boreas and rex. none of the others are in parks. hmm. boreas and rex at the landmark center...
Green! Thanks for the sauce. LuLu and the three sisters are here. So I'm gonna wait to do the "taste-test" till the sisters are gone. I don't want to go teary-eyed in front of them!
Just seeing the posts "talking" about clues has gotten my mind a running, and in that "overload" mode already. We gotta have it this year! Gotta!
10-4 Over and out!
P.S. Has anybuddy communicated with the Wild and Karazy Guys yet???
Happy New Year Everybody! It's so exciting to see people back on the board. I would check from time to time during the year but now the fever has really hit. I love the idea of Dave phoning in the clue and having it come up early on our site if Tim is willing. Electric Duane and I are now down south in Northfield and I fear I/we will not make as many trips up for the revelation of the clue/late night digging as we would like. But being able to noodle right away would make up for it partially. I do think I'm going to have to schedule some days off for digging (I'd prefer to save them for day 8 or higher when the park is more certain). Hopefully it won't be found early or if it is, I hope it's a cooler crew digger who finds it!
Folks are starting to make their way bock for anudder Hunt!!!! Xcitement's building!!! I LOVE IT!!!
New Daddy, yes, we're still sibs. I'll be over sometime this Friday to get your email address. The documentary folks want to talk to you. Ittiz like you read my mind!!! (No epic tome, that!) I was wondering how to get ahold o'you and knew I just couldn't call and ask, "Is New Daddy there?"
Or, go to our Website (http://www.coolercrew.com)... You can get contact info for the producer there.
In about three more years, you're gonna have digging help, aren't you? This will be Tyler and Natalie's first year... 1998 was Hannah's. Thass when she lost her foot. Poor kid. I had that foot for a YEAR! Hope Tyler and Natalie hang on to theirs!
Tiny, get the 10-day flu! I've heard ittiz REALLY bad this year! Only cure izz digging! Then you can make it up more!
And a palidrome (sp?) Joe! for green!
Green--sorry--but a palindrome is something that reads the same forward as backwards. 9339 is a palindrome. 9393 has many interesting properties, but not that one! Not trying to nitpick--just working the brain.
Kellogg park had two snoopys! Mears had at least one, Rice had at least one--remember the snoopy cam on the Web?
DDave, not nitpicking - you're just point out where I was incorrect - teaching me - in a very nice way!
I wondered about that after I posted... Well, it was a nice two pair! :D
I remember the Snoopy Cam. It was fun. But Rice *will* be out, as usual. The Ice Carvings.
I still believe The (Clueless, Doofy) Clue Writer(s) watch here and change the clues when we get on them in a hurry. Last year they were just asleep at the switch and missed Terry cackling over her crystal ball. Hope they're snoozing well as I look into my emerald one: BATTLE CREEK!
Also, DDave... Please contact the documentary folks. They've not your email address.
Hideeho!
The Pearson Candy Company out on 7th Street also had a Snoopy. Is that considered St. Paul? Also it seems to me that over the hill, yonder, (north?) is another park that the medallion was placed on previous hunts. I cannot remember the name of the park, only that Green was on the cell phone with me when I escaped from work one day, to scope things out. Green, what is the name of that park??? I'll hafta go look it up.
BBIAW
Good Evening!
Regarding Snoopys about town - there are several that are on public display. Check out the front page of the pioneer planet for a full list. You just never know what might come in handy - and that was a huge deal in St. Paul this year.
Cackling Green? Me? Cackling? I've been cackling for a year!!! LOL!!!
MJ - Over the hill from Pearson's (St. Paul) - is Highland.
Joe!
Hiya Ter!
Just looking at the past hiding places, and yep, I think the name of the park just north of 7th St is Highland Park.
You know, this would be a cool way to remember Chas. Hiding the medallion around a Snoopy.
Where ever it is, we'll find it!
You betcha we will! It's our year. Not a doubt!
Just now saw your post Ter!
Power-posting for the Joe, eh! Good one!!!
I darn near even missed seeing it. These eyes aren't as young as they used to be.
I was checking out past hiding places too. It's been so long since it's been Phalen. I wonder...
I forget that on this board, you hafta hit "previous" so you don't miss out on the postings.
I'm gonna be one sorry girl when the board *really* gets hopping!
I did like it better when there was a recent button on the bottom of the page so you could the latest posts and not miss anything.
Hmmmm . . . 1993 hidden in a diaper. I wonder if it looked like it was "used" and nobuddy wanted to check it out . . . . then someone had some courage, plugged their nose and looked inside! LOLOLOL!
It was an unused one on a small triangle of land between two driveways out at Hidden Falls. I don't think anyone had thought to dig there - but we drove by it several times that year.
LuLu is beckoning. They had Marty's day off today. I'm thinking she need to get stuff ready for tomorrow. I'll be back in a few.
They changed the name o'the thread! I like it! Shows ittz for *this* hunt.
Joe!
I'm to'ing and fro'ing. Waiting on emails and playing 3D Ultra Pinball "Creep Night." Kind'a vegging and taking it easy. Waiting fur time to subQ Hattie...
Try o'taste o'the Rooster Sauce, MJ! You'll SWEAR it has tommy-toes, but there isn't nary o'one in there. Just red chiles and garlic. Ittiz great on everything: mac & jeeze, mashed potatoes, chicken - you name it!
Hay, Ter!
Thanks for the heads-up, Ladies, on the recent. I'da missed a whole dang conversation!
Terry, would you LISTEN to me????!!! The Med CANNOT be in Phalen this year! It was LAST YEAR!!! It wuz and they moved it. And I've proof!
Also, that WAS a GREAT Joe!, Terry!!! Nice catch!
BTW . . . I say Marty in the most affectionate way. If you remember, I have two of them. Dad and Bro.
Speaking of bro, he was just devastated over the game yesterday. But I can't go there, because this izn't the Football board. Let's suffice it to say . . . . he's crushed.
Okay, Cooler-buds, I've gotta run. Need to do some domestic stuff here (laundry), so I'll catch up with you later.
Green - It was in Newell - and as I recall, I thought so very early. I think someone around these partz was reading way too much into clues way too early! LOL!!!
But this is a new hunt with new clues and new frustrations. I wish it would hurry up and get here!
It was MOVED! All the clues fit... Well, untill the 7th - MAYBE. I didn't have time to nail *that* one!
I mean, come on! How would it look if the ONLY person digging in Phalen (I was there way before Allison!) found it? And to top it off, it was green - the most clueless of clueless - and a memeber o'The Crew?
So, naturally (SHEESH! Plain as the nose on your face!) they moved it!
And that's my story and I'm sticking with it.
If it makes you feel better Green, that's okay.
Just think though - if it's at Phalen this year, you'll be all set! You had that park all figured out.
Oh. I never thought o'that.
Nah. Knowing me and how clueless I am... I'll be in Newell!!!
RISLOLPMSS!!!!
But it won't be in Newell!!!
Now, we don't know that. The clues haven't come out!
But you're rite. Ittiz gonna be at Battle Creek!
Joe!
I like Mounds and Phalen this year myself.
Hello?
Hi Mom!
We were out *cruising* this evening. I felt like a little kid, asking Dad, "Can we drive past this park now?"
mj...the medallion won't be immediately near one of the statues. with the cold weather we all crave so much, and the statues natural fragility as demonstrated last summer, it all adds up to broken snoopys. now, once the permanent bronze monument is put into place, i'd consider that to be a valid hiding place.
besides, as i said in an earlier post, there are simply too few of them on public land (i.e. parks) in saint paul. i am sure that we can expect at least one reference to one of them, though. (then again, i was saying on friday the vikes were gonna lose by 3 :-).
jason
hey, mom, how much is actually visible right now? i'd imagine that most of the parks are rather unlit.
Cruising for parks is fun!
Ares - I don't think they would hide the medallion in the immediate vicinity of a snoopy, but I believe that if you know where they are or were, if they show up in a clue, that will help get you into the direction of the right park.
Oh, yeah....there's not a TON of light out there, but they are lit. Mostly, we're just driving past getting the *feel* of them back. Mounds is easy, because it's across the street, but Phalen, Battle Creek, Highland, - basically all the rest of the parks in the city - I need a good refresher on...
ter - that's what i was thinking. now where did i put those pictures i took along with their original locations?
park-cruising is definitely fun. i've been devoting my lunch break for the past week to it, and making notes in the "guide".
The Pioneer Planet had a listing of all 101 of 'em earlier this year. I bet if you looked in the archives for snoopy, you'd find the list. I printed it out when it first showed up. I also have today's more current list.
I would LOVE to be able to cruise on my lunch - and I bet I'd be a *lot* more productive in the afternoon, too! LOL! I work in the southern burbs, though - so I'll have to stick to little jaunts in the evening for now.
ter - i've got the list printed somewhere. i just shuffled it around across my desk the other day (the final list is at "http://www.pioneerplanet.com/archive/snoopymap/snoopyindex.html"). sorry for not posting this as a link; html isn't working :-(.
mom - i'm fortunate enough to work up in roseville. i get to hit a lot of the western parks. and it does do something for your afternoon productivity (doesn't help that i don't fully wake up until a half-hour before i take off for lunch though :).
jason
Doesn't look like any html is working here yet.
I can scope out some of the Midway area parks during a lunch break - but I don't often do that.
I've done a bit of slogging, and I have a plan according to green's theory of movement. We make sure NONE of us are at the same park on lets say the 4th night, we will all be alone, then on the next night we all go to Conway, so... naturally they will move the medallion to Conway, and we will be the first ones there!!!!!!!
Tim - That's a cute idea. It made me chuckle.
well, it has it's kinks, but we can make it happen!!!
lol tim
as for the snoopys- I don't think they will use any of them directly. maybe a reference to a street name or something. or maybe what the medallion is in. there isn't an earmuff snoopy is there????
No Tim. There is no earmuffs snoopy. Geez!
just checking!!!LOL
those would be some goofy lookin earmuffs, though. :)
true, true
Ugh!
sorry for the image, ter :)
nice trips JOE Ares
ter have you noodled my practice clue yet? hint- page 16
forgive me for sounding stupid, but what's the reference to joe?
tim loved the clue
Tim - I must admit. I thought my treasure book was south. Now I can't find it here and am almost sure it's up north. I found my Ramsey County Parks guide up there so it had better be there. We will know by Friday night when we head north again.
palindrome JOE
Let me try to explain joes. (Where's Green when you need her?)
well, at least it was a normal JOE! ter stold my palindrome JOE by accident. man, when you're hot, you're hot.
During the 1998 hunt, a rather obnoxious being posting as Joe Medallion would post one letter or number posts to get to the next number ending in a zero. It might be a series of 10 or so at a time. He is no longer around (PLEASE!!!)...but the joe idea remains.
Now, of course it's expanded to other types of joes for other types of beings.
thanks, terry. hmm. i seem to remember joe.
Joe Cooler- a crazy dude who harrased the people of this board, many moons ago.
JOE- specify's a landmark post e.g. 1000, 1500, 1650, etc.
this tradition has grown to palindromes, and for some, even favorite numbers.
a got the story handed down by word of mouth. so it is a weee bit hazy.
so terry just got what could be considered a "double-joe"
no, I palindrome JOE, since it is the same frontwords and back words. a double joe would be... 3434
Some folks like the year of their birth - or other significant years in their lives.
then what would the 9400 post be? with the double-0's
Original JOE!!!!!! (not really, I'm talking to Ares)
got it. lol. but only the 939 was the plaindrome. i could see something like 9339. 9390<->0939 doesn't quite fit.
correcto mundo
I gotta hit tht sheets, SCMD's! (sweet cooler medallion dreams)
oh yeah, don't be afraid to question anything that don't make sence on this board.(or, to save time, anything that does make sence) I did last year.
i'm with you tim. gotta be up for work tomorrow. catch you all in about 8.5 hours.
Goodnight Tim! Goodnight Ares! I hafta be at work at 7:30 tomorrow. I better sign off too.
SCMDs!!!!
Terry- Just to let you know, it is quite possible I could have a surprise lined up for you!!! (NO GUARANTEES) but if it does work out, I just hope you don't have a heart attack!!!
Hmmm, only one thing I can think of that the surprise might be. I wonder if its possible??
Also seems kind of funny to watch people stretching the clues already when they haven't even come out yet.
Personally I don't see the Snoopy's being involved in the clues. Its not like they regularly have some current event theme worked into the clues. In fact, they usually have nothing at all to do with anything going on in the news. They might use three clues to say there's water nearby, or give clues to the same street two or three times, but relate a clue to something interesting? Only if someone completely different is writing them.
Good Morning!
Not stretching anything yet, Allison...just noodling possibilities. And you're right. The snoopy thing might not have anything to do with nothing - but it's always good to be prepared...right?
A surprise? For me? Jake - you are too funny. I can't wait!
Saturday will be here soon! Only 4 more wake-ups!!
come one, allison. not much else to do before saturday night. one can always hypothesize. just remember though, we have had clues about curing "vikings depression" before.
morning, ter. 8.5 hours, ok so it was more like 9, close enough. now if only i were awake.
Maring, Marning!
I toddled off last nite, Ter, but you and Tim* did a great job on the Joe! xplaning.
I, too, liked Tim's reasoning on us finding The Med... Ittiz worth a try! LOL!!!
FOUR MORE WAKE UPS!!! Gods, but I'm worthless at work! *I* think when we register our buttons we should get a work/school xcuse that xplains about our state of mind. Folks are starting to look at me weird(er) at work when I reply, "Like... Whutchewmean by THAT? That some sorta clue I gotta figure out?" Eyeing folks... And whispering in the bathroom... "You Dig?" More white's showing up on me and less green and I'm getting asked if I've entered a convent (ME????) or joined some whacked out religous group. My emails are in rhyme and four-lined stanzas. And if one more person tells me to remove my pithy because I'm indoors, I may go postal!
green you're not the only worthless one at work for the duration.
"or joined some whacked out religous group"
Well, sorta. hehe
All hail the Medallion!
I know what you mean by wanting to have something to ponder and not really having anything. I think we've done just about all the realistic pre-noodling we can. Hopefully you can excuse me though, due to other things going on in my life I've been in a critical mood the last few days. Maybe it will be useful in solving clues but its not good for making friends. :-) On the other hand, this is as crabby as you're ever likely to see me so it only gets better from here.
Allison, save your frustrations for the hunt. My life is just as crazy as yours right now, but I am going to channel my energies positively...... when the park is pinpointed and its time to dig!!!
Those of you that are very sensitive regarding your religious convictions, please miss this posting. I hope this comes out rite with no HTML to format with... :(
The Digger’s Prayer
Our Mom, who art in St. Paul, hallowed be her name!
Her Hunt does come, her will be done,
In every city park – this is heaven!
Give us each day our daily clue.
And forgive us our golf course trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass in The Cooler.
And lead us not into tempation of reading too much into the clues, But deliver us from doofy Clue Writer(s).
For yours is The Kingdom – forget that Boreas guy, The power in The Hunt, the glory in finding The Med, forever.
YEWBETCHA!
The Digger’s Psalm
The Med is our Puck we most surely want!
It maketh us to dig in snow covered parks.
It leadeth us beside the still, frozen waters of city lakes---It restoreth our souls every year at this time.
It leadeth us in the path of Spotters and film crews, for goodness sake!
Yea though we dig through the parks in the shadows of night, We fear no evil as St. Paul’s Boys in Blue art with us.
Thy history and tradition comfort us.
Thou prepareth us a wonderful 12-day event in the presence of those more sane.
Thou annointeth our heads with sweat.
Our coffee mugs runneth over.
Surely noodling and slogging will be a part of us all the days of our lives For we shall dwell in The Cooler of Mom forever.
no offence taken, aw. my stress level here's been building up for the past 2 months, and after tomorrow, it all goes away. well, for a while anyway.
lol green. thanks. (he says as he wipes the coke off his monitor and keyboard).
I had a breakup a while ago and now I'm in my grumpy stage where I tend to just say what I think. Plus I've run out of other useful things to think about. The only thing I'm contemplating right now is making a list of parks with "water" and a list with "woods". But then again, it wouldn't be that hard to make one after a clue comes out mentioning one of those.
Well allison, you can always print all the pictures at tresurehunt.8m.com, or go to the library and print the articles from every single hunt, or print the clues from the cooler crew website, or print aerial photos of the parks at terraserver.
jake, i was looking at the terraserver last year. the problem i kept seeing was that many of the obligatory clue references (radio antennae, drinking fountains, power lines, etc.) don't show up all that well on it. mostly because the best you can get from them is 1-metre resolution; you might get a set of railroad tracks showing up 2 pixels wide. everything else you mentioned, however, is a good way to kill some of the next 100 or so hours (and might help a.w. get the ex out of his mind).
If only my printer were functional. I agree about the usefulness of the terraserver. I guess I just use it as a sort of map, but with nothing labeled that can get tricky.
Here's a question to debate:
Is it better to dig alone or in a group? If you dig with a group, you have a better chance of finding it, but if you dig alone and find it, you don't have to share the money. I usually do a bit of both.
I do my lunch time digging solo. most everything else is group hunting. arrrghh. mom p made me use caps. give me my html formatting.
Allison- the good news is that we have Battle Creek zone 2 covered!!!! I hope it is there, because my grandma lives a block away!(hot chocolate, yum!) plus I could tell anyone a lot about it.
as for your question- here are my thoughts... it depends on who the heck you are digging with!!! I am sure that natalie will be a good hunter SOME DAY, but if you went digging with her this year, and had to split the money, I don't think thats fare. if you are with a group of pretty equal ability(most cases) then I would say no more than 5 people. 2000 is a lot of money, but the question is... who gets the credit for finding it? I sure hope we all have registered buttons by the 25th, I know I will!!!!!
Being bored, I plugged my name into the anagram site and here are a few of the results I got:
adorn linda swollen, alien snow landlord, all dandelion sworn, allow olden innards, also nil wonderland, and swollen ordinal, annal downside roll, annal drool swindle, noodle wall innards, nonlinear doll wads, walled loon innards
I don't have quite as many good ones, mine came out to:
Heals hurry, a shy hurler, h.r. slayer uh, hula sherry, hay hurlers, ashy hurler
and my three favorites:
Hush Rarely, Early Hrs. Uh, & Harshly Rue!
/me (got to avoid that pesky i syndrome) hasn't used the site (where is it by the way), but i'm pretty sure i'll get one: arse. :-)
Here are your anagrams Ares.
aers, aesr, ares, arse, aser, asre, ears, easr, eras, ersa, esar, esra, raes, rase, reas, resa, rsae, rsea, saer, sare, sear, sera, srae, srea
yeah, rush, but there are only 2 of those that have anything remotely resembling a meaning.
I got good ones(using tim the hunter)
hunt them rite, hunt the merit, hurt men tithe, rum hint teeth, their hunt met, and the new slogan for the cooler crew, or at least this years hunt....
THEM HUNT RITE!!!!!!!!!!!(I added the exclamation marks)
you da man tim
I try.
double JOE!!!!!
It reminds me of a redneck explaining the cooler crew, and it just fits(not the redneck part). plus, a word is spelled rong, but it sounds rite, which is how we right when we have so much to say and very little time. (right after a clue comes out)
Ares, if you go to my club (which I figured out you're in now) its on the links page along with some other useful sites.
You'll always be Hush Rarely to me!!!LOL!
yep, a.w., that's the real name i hide behind. i've got a few alter-egos out there. thanks for the link.
ahhh, its not going to be at mounds, in 87, their were like lawsuits man. it was horrible. they wont go back. (less something goes goofy). mmmm, park crusing eh,,,,,i should cruse out the new harriet island. just to see how it looks and whatnot.
Well, I am on my second tobacco free day, and feeling a little crabby myself... anyways, to answer tim's question, usually I hunt alone. Not because of any particular ethic, but because I usually hunt in whatever spare time I have--during lunch, after work, or sometimes at midnight. It's just easier. And, if they close out this board before Sunday, this may be my coolest JOE ever!!!
Going tobacco free this close to the HUNT?! You have my support, DD - Hope you make it!
Good Evening!
DDave - Good luck with that!
Green - Did you write that stuff? I printed it out and am taking it to work. They think I'm nutz - and now I have proof I'm not the only one.
Hi Mom!
Allison - sorry you're a bit unhappy too.
I think the best medicine is to get those clues out here for us to noodle.
Hi all! So is everyone ready?
Just to reiterate an earlier stated point to those of you who have this "Mounds issue"...It will not ever be at Mounds again. It doesnt matter if you people have been digging there for the last couple years and havent ruined the Mounds, they're are not going to risk it again. The Mounds were destroyed one year... and a few Mounds nuts in there digging is a little different than several hundred in there if the medallion's hiding place were discovered to be there. So please, enough on this. There I have said my bit and I feel damn good about it!
mounds- no one knows for sure. I don't think they'll risk it, but if the clues point there, I will go. ruling out places will have us at an auto-disadvantage.
I certainly am not going to eliminate a park in St. Paul until the clues lead us to wherever it is.
Well, sometimes you feel like a nut, somtimes you don't. The medallion is somtimes referred to as treasure or loot. Mob slang for a lot of loot is "a nut" or "the nut". Almond Joy has nuts, Mounds don't. Therfore the medallion will never be in Mounds.
Now *that* is clever!
think if they do decide to put it at MOUNDS it will be a year its found semi-early,not a to the last day dig.So it wont be there this year
Frog Pond...thass all I gotta say, thasss it. Ittiz gotta bee...
I dont know about anybody else, but I have been digging in Marydale park since the first snow.
Bee's BOCK! Yes, I'll check here, and post, feel like I've drop off the earth since the very first keystrokes (#50? No Joes back then...). Yes, I'm alive all, and I feel the need to dig! Cheers, AIAB, we need to kick it up a notch like the old days, no?
dd, you've got way too much time on your hands. i like the theory though. kinda goes along with the mob history of st. paul, too.
Three more Wake Ups...
tick.....tick......tick......tick.........tick
Ter, would *I* ever take the Lord's name in vain? Moi? Shirley, you don't really think *I* wrote The Digger's Prayer and The Digger's Psalm???? ME??? Shirley, you jest. Wait! You're not Shirley, you're Terry! (What the h@ll does Shirley have to do with anything????)
BEE!!!! Izzit REALLY you? Can it really bee Bee? Well, I'll bee!
The Almond Joy/Mounds was the best noodling I've read in a LONG time! DDave, you're an AJ for quiting smoking right before The Hunt. SHEESH! Man, I don't know if you're a saint or truly certifiable! Caffine and nicotine are my drugs o'choice and just about all I live on for 12 days in January. I lost like 10 lbs in '98.
We got the "Otay!" to film/stills at McGovern's. So, not only is Sat nite (three more wake ups... three more wake up...) a go, but so is Tues nite. Time? I'm not sure of. I'd say definitely after dark, tho.
Yust got the word, we can be in the Torchlight Parade... AND...
We'll have our own banner that says, "Water Cooler Crew"!!!
I *think* they want us/we may be in the Grand Day parade, too, but I'm not really sure and I'm checking that out. Lettuce say the Grand Day parade is also a do, is there anyone that would leave Digging to be in it????
Three more Wake Ups... Three more Wake Ups...
Lets get this thing on! Wow its kinda just hittin me that in less than a week our lives will all be turned upside down for a week plus. I can't wait.
DD, use your nicotine induced cravings to dig harder & focus on the concept that there might be a pack of smokes at the bottom of the pile of snow.
The temps starting to chill a little more again, now if we can only get another coating or two of white stuff I will be right back in my element. I believe that this year if we can get it a lot colder & yuckier out there the CC has a better chance of finding the medallion, since we are all crazy enough to actually be out digging in the crappiest of crappy weather and that tends to keep the johnny-come-latelies home.
Terry use the anagram server on your name, there are some interesting anagrams for it.
Is anyone else doing the schell hunt on February 24th, after just my first bockfest last year I cannot wait for this years hunts.
Shovler, I'm sure there's somebuddy that will be Schelling it again this year. I hope to...
And you're right about us digging in bad weather! Nothing stays us from looking for The Med!
(three more Wake Ups... three more Wake Ups...)
Otay! Here's what we've got: We can be in the Torchlight Parade. They don't want to take us away from our digging to be in the Grand Day parade. I'll email details to those I've addresses for and then give out the info Sat night at McGovern's so those I don't have an email address for can have the info, too. Those I email it to, if you see someone missing and you've their email address - send it on!!!
A die hard medallion hunter passes on and goes to heaven right before the start of a hunt. When the hunter gets to heaven, they ask "Where will the medallion be hidden this year?" God replies "Well, I have a theory on that."
I wonder when they hide it?? Has it been lying in the snow for a month now lonely and cold, ... or will there be a car cruising the park tonight, slowly circling to be sure no one is watching... perhaps they have a dog with them to not look suspicious.. A spotter is staying in the car to make sure the cost is clear... as someone kicks the snow with their boot... bends over, appearing to be cleaning up some dog doo doo and slyly places a small object in its snowy hiding place... where it is quietly waiting to be found.... The hider slowly walks back to their car, ,... paranoid that someone has seen them... The hider lights a smoke by their car trying to appear casual, but they can't resist glancing at the hiding place, making sure no one saw them... They drive away only to circle back and make sure no one is investigating the site...
New Daddy, I'll be over Fri AM!
Joe!
didn't quite blow coke all over my computer (might have helped if i had some to blow), but it was good nonetheless.
nd, i've often wondered about that. it would be somewhat embarassing to put the medallion out at, say, christmas time, only to have the snow completely melt in january, revealing the earmuff/snuff can/playing card box.
Just a quick pop into the cooler. I can wait for the hunt to begin. Have to go out tonight to buy AND REGISTER my button. Can't wait until Monday AM when the real clue with working info. comes out. The hunt adds sun to my days when there isn't any sun. Will be lots of digging this year. Lots of snow to move around which makes the hunt more fun. Can't wait!!!
Hi all - am looking forward to this year's hunt. Any credibility to the theory that it will be posted in the same park it was posted 50 years ago?
hey everyone! another year of intense treasure hunting huh? well, for those of you who dont remember, i'm the one with the www.medallionhunt.8m.com website. This year will be another great year, and the new site will be up shortly. I am looking for people who are willing to write storys, funny or sad, on what experiences they have had during the medallion hunts in the days gone by. Anyway, email me at ddavis@horizonmediaonline.8m.com
Hello, Treasure Digger!
Leelabell, the same park as 50 years ago idea is just one o'many. Ittiz very credible to those that hold to that belief! And ittiz not credible to those that don't!
You guys, you're NEVER going to believe this... But I cabbaged on to a GREEN pair o'ski pants! YES! Can you believe it? Hope my luck holds when it comes to finding The Med!
Got it! You can delete!
I have a list of 8 parks its likely to be in. 50 years ago (well, 49 actually) it was in Highland, and Highland is on that list. However, that almost makes me think its NOT going to be there. It seems to me, rather than try to use a place that would have some significance attached, they actually try to avoid any such thing so as to not tip their hand. I'm still saying Hidden Falls.
Just reread last year's clues and their meanings. Boy were they bad. I really hope someone else is doing it this year.
Good Afternoon!
I think the medallion has been hidden for awhile now. I kinda figured it went out during that 8 inch snowfall at the end of December...but no one really knows.
Allison - I disagree with your assessment of last year's clues. It got folks to the right park - although so many were hesitant to believe it to be Newell - and it was found relatively early into the hunt. The clues were okay - ittiz the way we might interpret them that makes them interesting and difficult. I don't remember a year yet that when the explanations came out, that I didn't moan at the explanation for at least one of them - and the years that we weren't at the right park - well....those were real groaners.
I'm looking forward to the noodling and stretching and the lightbulbs going off when we figure them out. It's really part of the fun that keeps feeding this obsession.
Hi guys this is my first time in to cooler... have be hunting this thing with my best friend for the last 20 years.. Hope one of the cooler crew gets lucky this year... Is the party on Sat for eve treasure hunter... good luck gang
Well I wouldn't agree and say they were bad clues, but I felt that last year's clue #5 was just too easy to be Newell. Of course I stood about 10 feet from where the medallion was eventually found and thought to myself "nahhh, not there" so go figure!
Anyway the idea of "too easy" got me looking at the past 20 years worth of clues and explanations (from the Cooler Crew Website) looking for what the first 5 clues had to say and what really is "too easy" and here are some interesting (or not) numbers:
# of times the "blanket" clue has indicated Ramsey County: 8 # of times the "blanket" clue has indicated St. Paul: 10 (including the last 5 years) # of times the "blanket" clue has indicated neither: 3 (94, 89, 80)
# of times the specific park was indicated by a clue: 2 Clue #4: 1 (97) Clue #5: 1 (94)
# of times a park with a golf course has been excluded: 2 (00, 99)
# of times a specific park(s) has been excluded my means other than not a golf-course: 3 Clue #1: 1 (86) Clue #4: 1 (97) Clue #5: 1 (96)
# of times a street near the park is indicated: 6 Clue #1: 1 (93) Clue #4: 1 (94) Clue #5: 4 (00, 98, 97, 82)
# of times a directional area in the city or county was indicated: 2 (97, 84)
# of times an activity available in the park (skiing, sledding, horseshoes, etc.) is mentioned: 10 Clue #2: 3 (99, 90 87) Clue #3: 2 (98, 80) Clue #4: 3 (00, 91, 82) Clue #5: 2 (93, 80)
# of times what the medallion is in is mentioned: 18 Clue #1: 2 (95,89) Clue #2: 6 (00, 97, 96, 92, 91, 83) Clue #3: 6 (94, 93, 88, 86, 84, 82) Clue #4: 4 (00, 95, 91, 82) Clue #5: 2 (93,80)
# of times landmarks around the park are mentioned: 25 Clue #1: 1 (92) Clue #2: 2 (98, 84) Clue #3: 9 (00, 99, 96, 95, 92, 91, 89, 87, 81) Clue #4: 4 (98, 93, 92, 85) Clue #5: 9 (99, 98, 95, 92, 91, 88, 8, 85, 83)
# of times landmarks in the park are mentioned: 26 Clue #1: 1 (91) Clue #2: 7 (99, 92, 91, 90, 88, 87, 85, 84) Clue #3: 3 (97, 95, 90) Clue #4: 8 (00, 96, 89, 88, 87, 86, 81, 80) Clue #5: 6 (97, 93, 92, 90, 89, 86)
# of times another event held in the park was mentioned: 1 Clue #2: 1 (89 Taste of MN at the Capitol Grounds)
Now assuming that early on in the hunt a "meaningful" clue is one that helps narrow it to a park, specifically one that a) indicates a park by name or b) excludes a park by name or other means or c) indicates a street near the park, and not one that talks about landmarks in the park or near it as there are so many possible interpretations, then:
A) 12 of 20 times a "meaningful" clue has been mentioned in the first 5 over the past 20 years or 60% of the time. (So maybe last year wasn't "too easy", it happens about 1/2 the time, of course street names only happen 6/20 or 30%, but that is okay for this argument)
and
B) There was only a 1 in 5 chance in the each of those years (except 00 which had 2) that of the first 5 clues a particular clue was the "meaningful" clue!
So that means we have about a 60% chance of having a 20% chance of noodling the correct clue in the first 5 to get us to the right park!
Don't know if anyone cares about that or not, but it kept me busy in the past couple of "pre-hunt" days so I thought I'd share! I'm just glad I've got you people to steal from! :)
Hello to vikki and Bax-Man 72! Goodluck in the hunt.
Bax-I love the way you think! Thanx for the interesting stats.
Hey, gang. I bought my buttons tonight on my way home. $3.20 a piece this year and my stamps will be on them for tomorrow's mail. FYI: buttons must be registered by Jan. 25. Can't wait until Sat. 12 midnight. Unfortunately, I have an office party I have to be at but I'll be logging on as soon as I'm home.
hey como park is where it's at
::::::Blasting through:::::::
Bee!!! Glad you stopped by! Please let us know if you're gonna hunt????
I'm LMAO reading all of the prior posts! This crew sure gets really funny, at pre-hunt time!
And once the first clue comes out . . . . we get glazed-over eyes, no sleep, irritable, itchy, witchy, and we stay that way for at least 7 days. At which time we all chime "ain't that dang thing found yet?"
We look forward to someone (hopefully the crew this year) finally locating the medallion. Because once it's found, we know that we can really go home to our beds. Sleep, sleep, sleep! It's almost a relief! And when we get our internal clocks to work for us again . . . . . we look forward to next years hunt!
Oh well!
hey, way to give up smoking, but this has got to be the worst time to do it. i agree, it wont be at mounds ever again, unless something was to make the mounds no longer an issue, like if they fell off the cliff, but that wont happen for a few million years. so not EVER, but not in our lives
I don't care where they put it!!! I just want to be digging and noodling!!!!!!
That's some good work Bax-Man. Two comments though. One, there is more than one interpretation out there, and we may not know until it happens, but I believe the mention of the golf course in the last two years wasn't meant to exclude a park with a golf course. Rather I believe it means to say "The park with the medallion may or may not have a golf course, but if it does have a golf course, its not going to be on the course itself."
As for last year, the thing that gave it away to me (if only I would have listened to myself!) was clue 4 in which they alluded to (multiple) picnic shelters. Only three parks have more than one and two of those (Como and Cherokee) had been used in the previous few years which only left Newell. Now whereas Newell was found on clue 7, Conway was still pretty much virgin snow on 7.
He gang don't be surprized if it's in a new park. 50th anniversity starting a new? I hope this hunt lasts longer than last year!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!
So when do they hide it? Do they always hide it in Saint Paul? Who hides it? Do you think they really hide it in advance, or do they wait until the hunt is at least a week old? How many people at the Pioneer Press know where it is? Does the hider hang out around the site to see the activity?
Howdy Guide!
Those are all really good questions - probably not with many answers.
I can tell you, as I have a friend that works for the Pioneer Press, that almost none of the people at the paper know where it it, who hides it, who writes the clues or when it's hidden.
I do believe however that it is put down before the hunt begins. The question in my mind is how much before. It's been found at or near ground level often under feet of snow - remember Wakefield on the lake attached to the tire thingy? - and there were no tracks or any signs of that snow being touched since it fell. That's why my theory is that it's put down during a bad snow fall while the rest of us are too busy digging out and shoveling our driveways to be concerned about some oddball in the park somewhere.
My favorite question:
DO YOU HIDE IT?
My response:
YES.
Cute Guide! Very cute!
Are you going to be at Patrick McGovern's on Saturday? Gonna have those books with?
Here's why I thought the clues from last year were lame:
Clue #2: A whole clue just to use one word (Ace)? Like the word "ace" would even possibly have any meaning to anyone prior to discovering the card box.
Clue #3: A tower or two? There were frickin towers everywhere you looked in Newell. EXCEPT you couldn't see any towers to the north (Boreas' direction) from the hiding place.
Clue #4: Like I said earlier, with a little research it basically gave the park away in a fairly definitive manner (kicking myself in the butt again). And we're were supposed to get Pierce-Butler from the fact they used the word "serve"? Its a pretty useless clue as there's no way to know which word we should be attaching such significance to.
Clue #5: This one was ok.
Clue #6: This one was ok.
Clue #7: Could this have left any doubt as to what park it was? And for such a small park, it doesn't make sense to pinpoint it this early.
Clue #8: "way" ending one line, followed by "amid" beginning the next line, is supposed to suggest "Midway"? In addition to having an extra letter, why backtrack and point out the general area when you've already given street names?
Clue #9: "Not far from divinity" is supposed to suggest the Saints? Saints aren't divine. It would be nice if they could be a bit more precise with their definitions.
Clue #10: Giving us Pierce Butler again? Like Fairview and Wheeler weren't enough?
Clue #11: "with a vet" is supposed to be an anagram for Hewitt Ave., except there's a letter missing. And for clue 11, isn't it a bit late to be throwing out yet another street name?
From having made one myself, I know it can be tricky to make an air tight set of clues. Mine even had an error or two, but then I spent only a month on mine. If I had a year, there would be no errors.
yes i have a friend at the paper too!! 3 people know where it's hid hhehe GOOD LUCK!! to every one..
Hi TV:
I'm just trying to be the first one this year to ask all of the classic treasure hunt questions.
Being first is good! Hopefully one of us will be the first to get our hands on the medallion too!
I'm being cheeky. I'll be there TV. I'll bring some books.
Its funny how there's almost a mythology behind the hunt. No one knows the truth it seems and I've heard a lot of different stories. I've heard that a woman wrote the clues for several years, and then that a guy was writing them, I've heard it was two couples, I've heard that it was someone different every year, I've heard that its just a general employee of the paper, I've heard that its an outside service under contract. The only thing I've consistently heard and believe is that VERY few people at the PP know where it is and what's going on.
Good news on the books. I have mine - somewhere between here and the place up north. I want another one as a reserve - and until I can find the first one!
LOOK IN A NEW PARK THIS YEAR??
New parks are fun to dig in.
Vikki, yes! The Pre-Dig Gig is open to all! Hope to see you there and hear your stories about the last 20 or so years hunting The Med!
Bax, HOLY CROW! Is that ever some work and noodling! I've yet to quite figure it out, but numbers and I don't get along too well...
MJ, Speaketh foreth yourselfeth!
Terry, what do you MEAN??? "Almost none of the people" at Mom Press know???? So, SOME of them DO know?
WHO ARE THEY???????????????????????????????????????
Allison, I'm in your camp re: last year's clues. You make a ton o'sense to me. YOU GO!
Hi Green!
What I meant is that someone has to know, right? No one knows who that is...but someone has to be in the know.
From my way of looking at clues - often one of the very earliest clues will tell you what the med is to be found in or attached to...but because hunters are still trying to figure out the park, those clues are hard to noodle. The Ace clue was on target there if you look at the general way clues are written.
Often times the clue writer first puts you in a general area (St. Paul or whatever), then very specific (what it's in or some landmark very near by), then something off in the distance (towers, domes, etc.) then something very near by again. It was classic clue writing.
The part that makes it more difficult is that we don't figure out what's close, in the distance or if it's a clue pertaining to what it's hidden in. The Navy Sock at Cherokee didn't come into the clues until very late which was unusual.
allison, your clue analysis is nearly perfect; depending on your particular implementation of christianity, saints are more or less nearly divine, not far from it. but still, midway stadium could have pointed to quite a few parks.
for the epitome of lameness, the first clue pointed me towards swede hollow. seemed like a perfect vikings depression.
jason
Jeez-louise! When you put it like THAT, Ter...
DANG! Both you and Allison make the most perfect o'sense to me!
Bottomline: All the clues, for the past THREE YEARS, have been sucky because I can't get a handle on them!
Ares... all the talk about saints and divine... I'm readin' ya and readin' ya, and thinking...
"Man, Allison's good, REALLY good, but a saint? Nah. That's taking it a bit far..." LOL!!!
Glad you got to the stadium bit... LOL!!!
Joe!
Anyone been out looking yet
The Puck has never been found at Swede Hollow, does anyone know why it hasn't been hidden there ? Is this a dangerous place ?
because Swede Hollow is the size of my back yard. plus, absolutely no parking.(well, that would be a problem)
