Ahh. That time of year to stop reading the stock market boards and start reading the cooler. And I find myself with the decision. Saturday night at the company holiday party or Saturday night at McGovern's pre-hunting. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Terry, for even *more* fun - the 1999 board is still up as well. It's called just "the medallion hunt". I had to laugh - one of the first posts in there, I made a comment about how I favored Phalen and Battle Creek...

of course not, terry. my decision's been made. the general atmosphere at work says that going to the company party would require dressing up, something i'm truly incapable of. :). oh, and it begins in 10 days and an hour and some odd minutes.

now, as another note, question, whatever, i've slogged through the posts that have shown up here since the middle of december or so, and i'm not really planning on going through those between the last hunt and this one. how many people actually lurk here over the summer?

ya know mom, i remember the 99 hunt all too well. i was quite literally standing on the thing at backstop 4, when my troupe and i decided that our time would be better spend digging out the bleachers behind the southeast diamond instead. what a mistake. of course, we did get to see some guy shovel out the entire baseball diamond at that backstop.

I got my button today!

Slogging through the old messages eh? I wonder if that gives you any sort of insight? The only thing I can think of is to keep Occam's Razor in mind: "The simplest explanation tends to be the right one" (paraphrased). If I had done that I never would have wasted all that time in Iris last year AFTER I figured out it was at Newell. So what clue would you guess that people will figure out the park on? Last year we had it on 4, the year before it was 7.

Hmmm, you know, I don't think they're going to start a new board for this year since they changed the name of this one and the Winter Carnival site points to this one.

Well, lets hope that the clues drag out a little longer this year, and that they are more well written than last year. Lets make the hunt fun. I was quite depressed last year when it all came apart on 7. Went to my normal place to get buttons this year (a little Tom Thumb in south Minneapolis) only to find the whole store was gone...I guess I should have went there more than once a year and gave them a little support. I eventually found some 4 packs at an SA over by Conway. I keep a 4 pack every year as souvenir, then I buy an individual for myself to wear for the hunt.

For those who need a button and dont know where to find them:

1) Most SA's in Saint Paul and its burbs 2) likewise most Holiday Station Stores 3) Tom Thumbs in Saint Paul and a couple in Minneapolis

Early Thoughts: Over the years, the clue writers have tried not to be too obvious. I think the last time it was at Como was during a significant anniversary for that park, but giving away Como isn't giving away much because the area is so vast.

I think they'll try to throw us off a bit more than usual, particularly since it was found so quickly last year. Expect early clues to lead us astray. I think they used Conway as a test a couple of years ago to see how a small rec. center might fare in a big park world. I used to tell people to ignore rec. centers, but true to the game, the hiders opened up this possibility just in time to sell more of Steve Worthman's books.

I love it all. I wouldn't rule out small parks just because it's the 50th anniversary and because more folks are expected to be out after the $10K. But clues aren't going to point you right to a small place.

I would love for it to be back at Marydale, just because I grew up within spittin' distance of the place. Even more, I would love for it to be at Front Recreation Center (find that on your map). Using Front, or Sylvan, North Dale, Orchard, ... now that would floor me.

So, like, since we've got *that* nailed down, lettuce just move rite on to Clue Two, otay? Don't you think that's a fine and dandy idea?

Eye do!

I hope they have electrical outlets at "The Park." I want to bring my Chile Cheeze Dip to da'Bash. And if anybuddy wants me to pick up a porterhouse or rib-eye the size of a roast at Lem's, let me know!

Can you tell I'm HUNGRY? LOL!!! Life don't get in-knee better'un THIS! Talking The Hunt and FOOD! :D

Something just hit me, besides the rain drops... As I was out ruminating over the loss of the Conway Hunt thread.

Ittiz been two years in a row that they've used Presidents in the clues. The trees in a row: "Wood row," as in Wilson (Conway). And the Franklin Pierce stuff last year. (I remember well the Conway trees/wood row/Wilson, as it's the only single clue ever ever ever - but the first ones! - I've ever figured out!)

Not that I think the use of Presidents two years in a row means anything or will help us in any way, but... You never know. I've tossed it out there for us.

Maybe we've had the same ditzy Clue Writer(s) two years running? (Running? Election? LOL!!!) Maybe if there's anything dealing with Presidents *this* year we'll have a [better] feel for the way whomever writes them as it will be the same purrson(s) and we've noodled his (can't be a woman! LOL!!!) style for two years???

I don't know. It's just something that dawned on me.

The Zodiac Hunter

Aries-- Most likely to go out hunting with a group of friends and will somehow manage to convince them to excavate an entire softball field.

Taurus-- More likely to want to just go out and dig without worrying a great deal about the clues. Will keep digging in the same place even if others tell them they’re in the wrong park.

Gemini-- Never gets to the right park because they read far too much into the clues. Still, they have a good time making their case.

Cancer-- Is only out there because someone they care about is out hunting and they wanted to go along and enjoy the experience with them.

Leo-- Determined to find the Medallion no matter what. Coordinates all available resources to decipher the clues and will dig tirelessly until it’s found.

Virgo-- May throw out a few ideas to others in an effort to be helpful but won’t go out and look for the Medallion on their own because if they don’t find it, then it was all a waste of time.

Libra-- Listens to everyone’s ideas and tries to get everyone to work together to figure out which park to look in, but by the time they actually decide on one, the Medallion has already been found.

Scorpio-- Not really concerned about the clues or finding the Medallion. Just uses the hunt as way to meet members of the opposite sex.

Sagittarius-- Will start out in one park, then decide on a different one and dig there, then become convinced its an a totally different place and will rush off there. Does eventually get to the right place though.

Capricorn-- Will choose a favorite park early on and then manage to fit every clue to their park of choice, never accepting other theories until they have no choice.

Aquarius-- Will be the first one to figure out the clues and is usually content to leave it at that and not bother digging, though is more than willing to share their insights with their fellow hunters.

Pisces-- Most likely to follow the crowd in determining what park to look in and once there, will rely on gut instinct, trying to “feel” where the Medallion lies, to figure out where to dig.

You know, it's a question of style. I can only write like me because I am me. I bet I could pick out Greg and Allison - and WW! - because they have their own distinctive styles. Everybody does!

Same for The Clue Writers. I'm convinced the clues the past two years were written by the same person, or group of persons. In addition to having a good knowledge of Am., and even St. Paul history (did Boxmeyer write the clues - they are very much like his writing...), two years in a row we've had "first and last" as in Conway Twitty and Tim Conway; and Franklin Pierce and Pierce Butler.

If the same person, or group of, are writing them again this year, it should be easier to maybe understand and "ace" the clues... Because we'll have a feel for their style, what they know, what they're about.

But if someone new... there will be different puzzles, turns of phrases. Because they'll have their own different style.

Oh, never mind. I guess just a puzzle to keep myself busy for the next 10 or so days.

But, I will give you, gut instinct *does* play a huge part - LOL!!! Ittiz the intuitiveness of us fishy-folk. Tho, hasn't been a damn bit helpful for three years. Its not the 50th anniversary, its the 50th hunt. After the first hunt, zero years had gone by, after the 2nd hunt, 1 year had gone by since the first, and so on. So in this 49th anniversary of the hunt, we are doing the 50th hunt.

Hey Terry, Jake, and anyone else who cares. If you want to give someone your email and you're both here at the same time, just give it to them. Then after they have it, delete the message or edit it out. GO COOLERHEADS!

Hey gang, I'm back for another season of diggin'. Hopefully I'll get out to the right park before the dern thing is found. Last year I got to Newell for the first time 15 minutes after it was found. Figures. I was holding out. NOT THIS YEAR! And, this is probably by farewell hunt (boo hoo). I'm getting married in October and moving to Hot Spring, Arkansas! I doubt they have anything THIS cool down there. Granted, they did get 2.5 inches of solid ice a couple of weeks ago. Glad I'm not digging in THAT! I'll try to make it to the pre-dig-gig. I'm coming back from a weekend in Chicago that Sunday, but will hopefully make it before it gets too late.

See ya out there! SueBee

To answer Green's question, yes, they have talked to DDy, even spoke to him on the phone I believe.

To Answer New Daddy's question, there is a site called "Friends of the Parks" which is really friends of Ramsey County parks. They don't have maps but they do have a search engine that allows you to look for almost anything you can think of whether it be street names, what kinds of facilities they have, who runs the park, etc. The only thing is when I was looking at it yesterday, or maybe it was the day before, it didn't seem to be working. No matter what I looked for, it came up with nothing. Hopefully they'll get it fixed soon.

The URL is http://www.friendsoftheparks.org/

Now, for my question. Last year, while on this chat site for the medallion hunt, I did not see many of the familiar names that I see today. I am glad that all of you are still here. Anyway, my question is - where did all of you go? There were a lot of newbies posted. Then again, the park was figured out on the fourth clue. Back to my point, will all of you be communicating here or on another site. I enjoy hearing all of your insights and trying to communicate mine. So anyway I am glad that it is only a little more than a week away. I've got my boots lined up by the door, just waiting for me.

I don't know when they stop selling them, but I know the deadline for registration is January 25th.

As for where did people go? Well there are some people who post on here who are really nothing more than annoying, and that is pretty much their aim. I remember someone last year kept posting porno ads too, so its not too surprising that people not spend a lot of time here when its crazy (not to mention the board crashing all the time). I also think last year, after Conway went to 11 clues, a lot of people held off getting involved too early and by the time they did it was over. As for other places, there were more options last year. In addition to the Shoot The Breeze Board here, there were some other sites with chatrooms and message boards. But I think this will always be the central gathering place and everyone will return here at some point.

From what I can figure out, the way to do a link is simply to type in the whole url for the site you want folks to go to... http://www.coolercrew.com/

Not as fancy as doing it with HTML - but it works. That's the main thing. Everything else is gravy.

Fourth Annual (GASP! Has it been THAT long ALREADY?!) Pre-Dig Gig, Sat, Jan 19, 2002 - McGoverns! BE THERE!!!

Howdy-Do! And Happy Friday!

I've been working on getting a photographer/filmer for the 20th so that none of us have to step back and take pics and possibly not be in a "major moment." I think I've got it nailed down but will have to wait until next week to know for sure. And it will be a professional!!! We may not go with still photos, but actual filming. I'll know more later.

Am trying to pull in chits I've out there thru work for media contacts. I've only two, MPR and Channel Two, but it beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. And I've contacted my local widdo tiny paper in hopes they'll like the human interest angle and do a story: "Local Woman In Documentary," or something like that. If any o'you have small papers in your towns/cities (those of you that don't like live in St. Paul) do the same if you're comfortable. The more word and press coverage we get, the better for this posting site, our Web site, The Crew, and Mom Press/Planet, and the doc folks. Company newsletters, too. But again, only if you're comfortable doing something like that.

Mom Planet's going to be working on contacting the heavy hitters (Channel Five, et al) and is going to do little ads that direct folks here for noodling. Maybe even 15 sec radio spots if it can be swung (swang?). They're going to try and dig up the VERY FIRST goup pic - remember that at Chair-O-Key, with Lem? - for use in the documentary if the doc folks wish to use it. There will also prolly be an article in Mom Press. Terry, I'll need your help in getting email addresses to Mom Press for contacting folks, if they want/need to contact them. I hope you'll help out there. I'll know more on this later.

I talked to Lem today! He says, "Hi!" to all and was p-r-e-t-t-y incredulous about the documentary. Greg, he was at our Web site when I was talking to him (he didn't know we had it!) and thought it super nice and professional. He was REALLY impressed!!! I TOLD you you're the greatest and you've done the bestest job with our site!!! He was really impressed we're still together after all this time and had the nicest quote about us, it made me cry. I can't think of it xactly, but it was something like... Oh, I can't even paraphrase. It was like how awesome it is that The Crew came about and we're the perfect example of an on-line community - or something along those lines. I'm going to have him contact the producer to give it to him as it would be a purrfect voice over intro. Tho, it could get canned, too! LOL!!! But I think not!

I've tracked down Brett! SHEESH! He's as hard to get ahold of now as he was when he was at Mom Planet! LOL!!! He needs to talk to the doc folks. After all, it was Brett that got us "Shoot The Breeze," and our Web site. I think he'll be xcited about the documentary!

And I can't promise anything, it's not mine to promise, but there *may* be a surprise for The Crew. Mom Planet's gonna see... No promises, but she's not above begging!

Things moving along nicely. Oh, damn! Forgot to ask if we could be in the parade again this year! Oh, well! Next phone call/email!

Like you, I think there's something to area. I had a feeling last year it would be in the vicinity it was, but I was a few miles too east in Phalen...

Yes! Green trying to have the park nailed one week before the first clue even comes out! I think more Battle Creek than Mounds; I'm in WW's camp. I just can't see them hiding The Med there for fear too much damage to the mounds.

Green - you always like the idea of those east side parks - Phalen, Battle Creek...LOL!!

Phalen is long overdue - but my early prediction remains Mounds. Just seems that there has been a trial period over the last few years when early clues had many digging in that park. One year - was that the year of Cherokee? - many, many people at Mounds without incident to the burial mounds.

But then - time will tell! We'll all meet up somewhere eventually.

Good marning, Ter! You are so logical. I just don't see how you do it. You make good points.

Yup, was Chair-O-Key. But early digging's one thing, frenzied digging's another. Sometimes I wish I could get in the Clue Writer(s) head and *know* these things. Sometimes, even when frustrated and totally clueless (that's most o'the time!) I'm glad I can't because it would take the fun outta it. But I get ssssooo frustrated cuz I just can't get it!

I got the neatest game fur myself for Christmas, "The Riddle of The Sphinx." Ittiz a putter game, a murder/mystery kind'a thing. And like even with things staring me in the face - tho one thing you gotta figure out DOES involve numbers and a combination lock and the counter on a tape recorder!!! - I just can't get them. I thought it would be good practice, you know? And I try and do what Greg says and not make it too hard and to quit reading so much into *it* [whatever puzzle/clue I'm working on], and I STILL can't get it! I can figure out murder mysteries in books... Why can't I figure out The Hunt clues and putter game mysteries?

I beginning to think it's not a learned thing: Like you're good at it or you're not. I keep trying to learn it, practice what I'm taught from the old hands at this Hunt, and it's still just MUD. Ittiz ssssooo frustrating! I want to learn it and I don't think I can!

Damn Hunt. Drives me outta my mind!!!!!!

That is the point though...the year at Cherokee, there were folks digging at Mounds - lots of folks - till darn near the end. I think it was a good trial - and there have been other times since. No damage + no incidents = no issue.

I do believe folks either grasp number things or don't. You can learn basic math by memorizing tables and such - but the understanding of how numbers interrelate is something you're either able to do or not...like an inborn instinct.

Yep--I too went to mounds before Cherokee. There was a clue about "pyramids". While we all now know this referred to the shape of the picnic shelters at Cherokee, many of us thought that could only mean "a pointy burial place". Honestly, if the clue writer was paranoid about senseless idiots desecrating the burial mounds, you think he/she would stay far away from a clue like that. While such a connection may not have been forseen, it got me, and a lot of other people. I personally believe PP did this on purpose--put in a Mound-like clue to see what people how people would behave. If people went grave digging, PP could always say that it was a case of mistaken identity. Ergo--I think all of the "Never at Mounds" speak should be discounted. It could be there right now!

Hello Everyone! Isn't it nice that we're all gathering here again?

I agree that folks can learn math - but for some it comes much easier - like there is a brain function that is more finely tuned to understand the abstract concepts that math - especially advanced math can bring.

I relate it to art in my life. I'm a frustrated artist. I see colors, shape, form, shadows, perspective, but try as I might, I have trouble getting that on paper or canvas. I keep studying it though - and trying - someday I'll actually feel comfortable with my efforts.

If I remember the comments about the pyramids and how that translated to burial mounds, I believe it had to do with the fact they were both burial sites. Far reaching thoughts - but that's how it connected.

Hi all again!

That's right. The HTML was taken away cuz someone posted on all the boards in huge blue letters - and did so with several posts. Also, you might recall some porn photos showing up here one night. Without the HTML, that kind of thing won't be able to happen again.

I left all my hunting books and stuff down south...bound and determined not to do too much studying this weekend...so I'll have to wait till I'm back south on Monday night to check out that clue.

Yes, the HTML did allow for some personality--look at some of E&H Mom's early posts--now that was a font! But sadly, some people's personality leads them to do obnoxious things, so it is gone. Wondered what was keeping that puppy from selling. It's been up for sale for about four months now and for around here that's like four years. It's gone thru like three owners in the last four years. It, as most houses around here, was never on the market for more than maybe two weeks, max.

House just the udder side o'Les? About two years ago, there was actually a bidding war on it! Was only on the market like a matter of HOURS! Man, you should have seen the people to'ing and fro'ing from that place that day!

Okay, guys. I'm not getting much help or any ideas on the signs. Your help, knowledge, and xpertise is needed!!!

Also need some suggestions and ideas (Downtown Dave, Ter, Greg, Steve W., you guys should be good with this one) for places to take good sunrise and sunset filmage (is that a word? How about "footage"?) over St. Paul. Need some ideas here folks!

Also, can you think of some places that are well lit at nite that would make for good filming? Xample: Rice Park. Is there a place in Como? What about Highland? (All I could think of were the hockey rinks at Conway... LOL!!!)

Besides McGovern's, where would be a good place to hold one-on-one interviews, indoors, particularly during the day???? Anyone?

Is anyone available/able to interview/meet with the film crews on the 23rd in the afternoon? Also, the evening of the 23rd we need to all get together someplace, possibly McGovern's (maybe not, I'm still working on that - see above question) because the film crews want to get going meeting everyone. As soon as the place is determined, it will be posted here, as well as the time, so all who wish to may come and join in!

One place and time has been determined and anyone that doesn't have to work, can get outta work/school, takes vacation during the hunt, etc., should show up at: 12:00 PM (noon) on Wedensday, January 24th, at Rice Park. They want to do interviews with the ice carvings going on around them. (This, of course, hinges on us not being hot and heavy on the trail o'The Med!!! It couldn't be found THAT soon, could it??????)

Put your thinking caps on, everbuddy! The film crews need our help!

When I got all bent outta shape over my old handle being swiped when they deleted 1998, I had to think of a new one and I was in a BIG hurry to get in here and noodle (I'm sure that doesn't surprise you...) and so I just did green and tossed on the "dot" at the end.

Geez! Things have been busy here. What night is the deal with the documentary people? I have a training to do on the 23rd until 9 or after. I'm not available that night.

As far as good places to photograph - the conservatory at Como is lit at night...and the pavillion by the lake as well. Those are always nice photos day or night.

Any photos at Phalen would have to be during the day...nothing lit out there at night.

Doing a photo of the capitol mall could be interesting - and depending on the time of day, there might be some interesting shadows or highlights on the capitol building itself.

Many of the parks are better photographed during the day as there is not much lit at night.

Kellogg Park would be one exception to that.

There is a nice shot of the downtown skyline from 61 coming into the city from the north.

Again, these are not the ONLY times for interviews or filming. Just times and places they've requested we be if at all possible. They want to get as much interviewing outta the way early on as once The Hunt's well a foot, they'll be chasing after Diggers hot on the trail o'The Med!

The good news is that it's never been found in the exact same thing twice - so earmuffs shouldn't even enter into the equation.

Good idea, Tim!

I'm heading for the sheets. No sense in being sleep deprived yet. There is plenty of time for that.

Goodnight and Sweet Cooler Medallion Dreams!

Speak for yourself, Terry! I don't mind being sleep deprived during the week - I need to work on getting even *less* sleep. Wonder if I'll still be able to keep my eyes open for the whole drive to work....

...is happy that Art Bell is back.

A few thoughts for you Green. 1. The downtown library branch is currently closed for remodeling. 2. As Suggested before, Warner road coming into downtown is pretty sunset wise. 3. Sunrise could be caught nicely at the small park at the junction of Rasmey Hill and Summit. 4. Just to the east of the capitol in the state parking lot, there is a cool overlook to St. Paul facing east. 5. Another cool sunrise would be that small park on the river side of Miss. Blvd across from the Seminary. 6. Off higway 61, just south of Warner is another cool overlook. 7. Mounds park has a couple of overlooks. 8. If you have connections at 1st Bank, or just beg, the roof of the first bank building is very flat and provides the best view of the city. I used to maintain the antennas up there, but I don't have any more pull. Good luck.

Now that's a NEAT Joe!, DDave! 3-6-9...

I'd thought from the top o'some building would be neat, but had no idea *which* building. I'm glad ittiz them and not me... There is NO WAY I'd go up there! I can't go past the tree line w/o turning to Jello! The First Bank building would be ssssoooo meaningful! GREAT idea!

Your neat ideas for sunrise/sunset footage have been duly recorded. Thanks much!

Can you help anymore with the signs idea? The 3M tape may be just the ticket, but would it work with paper? Is paper a good idea? Should something else be used instead?

Well, bock to a warm bed with Pickles and The Kids. The Cheez-Its were nummy (yawn).

SCDs to all!

Join my treasure hunting club at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/theallisonwonderland for future hunts during the year (well at least 1)

I don't think all the shoots would have to include some sort of natural, scenic type beauty. We are an urban center after all, we don't need to look like we're a small prairie town. A shot in front of landmark center, by the big lit up tree in front of the St. Paul Co., the ground floor of the Lawson building on Wabasha has some huge windows that are draped with lights. While its nice to have scenic beauty, it seems to me you're getting away from the "truth" of the documentary if you start shooting places people never go. If you want the person watching the movie to get a sense of what we experience as hunters, it seems they should be a part of the same environment, even if its just a background shot. So a shot inside McGovern's would be good. By the ice sculptures in Rice Park (which personally I'd be surprised if they had any of them there with the construction going on in the park, as the whole park is fenced off. I think most of it will be on Ecolab plaza). A shot with the snow slide or ice maze in the background might not be picturesque, but it would show what the Winter Carnival is about. So would a shot in front of the snow sculptures.

If they need bright places at night, maybe it would be best to stay indoors. A lot of my memories involve sitting here at my computer. Thus a shot of someone in their home with their computer in the background, while again not picturesque, would be entirely appropriate to giving the viewer a sense of the environment we operate in. I also remember after hours of hunting, taking a break to eat and going for food. So a shot in somewhere like The Tuscany Grill or Perkins would also be appropriate (though probably easier in the case of the first option).

So I can't see shooting somewhere like the top of a building, since none of us ever go to the tops of buildings in our hunting, and thus such a location wouldn't resonate any of that hunting energy. How much more excited would you be to talk about your experiences if you were under the pavilions of Cherokee, or by the hockey rinks of Conway, or the firepit of Newell? It seems to me those are the best places to talk to people because then they can't help but become immersed in the spirit of what they're being interviewed about.

Good Morning!

Snowing up north here today and ittiz beautifuller!

I think getting some overviews of the city would be great. I'm sure there will be plenty of down and digging type shots. I often think, as I first start noodling clues, as the city as a whole and which direction to go. I don't think we need to worry that we'll come off as some prairie town.
