I was on the basketball/volleyball early this afternoon. What time was it found, and where is the the bench swing?
THE COIN HAS BEEN FOUND
I was on the basketball/volleyball early this afternoon. What time was it found, and where is the the bench swing?
Clue #2--it's in a card box--the rest is a throw away, I think.
Th bench swing is back a little ways towards Hewitt from the playground area.
Everyone is invited. Even Pie. Though perhaps some come at their own risk (hehe)
I like this! A chance to gather and join in the common depression we all share right after it's been found.
Well, I did hear something about a big football game tomorrow...maybe I'll check that out.
Any depressed Digger's invited!
I've some neat - not your usual - mustard I'll drag along incase there's dogs
there. I've "normal" mustard, too, for the less adventuresome...
girlfriend and i will be there for sure and possibly friends jack and or jim
Will Mom, if you and Dad have enough wood and will bring it, that should do. Need any help with it?
8pm TONITE at Newell?
8PM, tonight at Newell
I'll pick up some dogs and buns at Lem's.
Hey gang,
Thanks for the kicks hanging out in here, even though I am 2000 miles away. Bought my daughter a button at Christmas, and told her Thursday night to go to Newell, she was just too busy.......
Next year I might have to arrange my schedule to be back home for the hunt. Have a great party and thanks again for the kicks. And you all don't have to fight, remember "Cooler-Heads" will prevail.
Slater,
Baygent
See you all there. And would someone please bring a box of Kleenex?
this was only my third hunt but damn i'm depressed i dug all night
This was my 30th hunt. You'd think a person would be better prepared for this empty feeling.
But this is a good idea! Misery loves company.
See you there.
I'll bring some napkins anyway. Everyone bring their clues and we can use them for kindling.
This sucks. Last night I was at Newell, without a shovel, just to look around, and I was determined that it was by that swing bench, then right when I was going to go get it, I found out some one else already did.
great see ya all in awhile, sniff sniffle
I've tons o'Kleenex. Will do.
Hay, Bay! You better get bock here next year! You can't miss THIS!
JOE!!!
Oh well, This was my first Med hunt. I wouldn't have gotten so close with out all your help. Your good people! Thanks!
anyone know 2 faced bandit, or wright winger? i hope they can make it!
Hopefully people will go through the messages, trying to see what happened.
See you all there!
Saw WW at Newell... Last look I had at him, he was toddling
off towards... THE SWING BENCH.
Damn.
Hope he gets on and sees where we're gonna bee...
Oh well, This was my first Med hunt. I wouldn't have gotten so close with out all your help. Your good people! Thanks!
Turn to Channel 5 now!!!!
I just IMed him...but he's not responding.
Hey all:
What a drag, had the next three or four days totally clear to just dig. So any confirmation on what time and where exactly in the park it was found? Just getting enough energy to deal with the let down.
Well, it sounds like Mom and Dad don't need help with the wood so I think I'm going to go to the store and get some stuff.
Duff, be at Newell at 8:00. We're gonna have us a Pity Party!
I also saw WW at newell! he's real nice and I hope to discuss the clues with him
Sounds good, just bring some food and stuff. I do look forward to meeting you all.
WW is a very sweet young man. He's great.
very smart also!
Sorry guys, it turns out we can't make it. Anyway, thanks to all of you for helping me search.
I never heard of Newell Park, but it was found by the swing bench.would that qualify as a turning machine,or was that something else?It was found fairly soon.Hats off to John Davoli.
WW's been hanging with "old farts" for three years now and doesn't bat an
eye. That's what's so neat about Cooler Heads. Age doesn't matter to us - just
who you are in your heart.
Haven't seen nuttin' about The Med Hunt on The Number Five, but did see about
my clubs cat show...
He did the right thing by not revealing it to his better half.My wife would have screamed also.
I WOULD HAVE SCREAMED. Or passed out cold. Or had a heart attack. Or steamed
my sweats...
tell me about it, i'm 14!!!!!
we all had a good laugh at newell last night.(WW, electic Duane, lorrieta)
Do you have a ride there tim?
Tim, you've prolly taken WW's place as the youngest Crew Member!
my pops!!!!!!!
I can't wait it meet some of you! Allison is my mentor!!!LOL
Ok, just wanted to make sure you can make it. I'm going to go to the store now and get organized. See you guys there!
Its on 5 now. Oops, its over already
Okay...Wright Winger will try to be there. He's depressed. He hadn't heard the find news yet.
thanks a lot terry!
I'm not burnin' MY clews! Ya'll be gettin'a post card from me when I'm in
warmer climes!
(Rite. I've not the best luck, obviously...)
They just talked about the guy that found The Med. WHY didn't he register his
button????? WHY buy it if you're not gonna register it???? Even I've got THAT
figured out!
I'm surprised they only got five grand.Maybe they don't subscribe to the PP.You also would get more if you sent in the clues.
Comlpete set of clues and meanings
Clue no. 1 To cure Vikings depression try a new obsession By taking part in our hunt through the snow But if you hope it's a profitable profession To a park in St. Paul you must go Don't be a rapscallion and seek the medallion In places of the improper sort You're certain to cause a rebellion If you go where golfers cavort
Informs hunters that the medallion is located in a park in St. Paul and that it is not on a golf course.
Clue no. 2 Set your own pace and it could make you an ace If your grasp of these clues is astute So get yourself out and into the chase And you just might win all the loot
"Ace" refers to the fact that the medallion is hidden inside a pack of Ace brand playing cards.
Clue no. 3 A tower or two should come into view As you're making your careful inspection. But this hint will only be of help to you If you look in King Boreas' direction.
At least two towers are visible when looking north ("in King Boreas' direction") from Newell Park. One is the tower of the Agriculture-Horticulture Building at the State Fairgrounds. The other is a concrete tower near Midway Stadium used by the St. Paul Fire Department for training.
Clue no. 4 Some places to gain relief from the rain Will serve to help you as you're looking Read this well and you just might obtain A clue that will really get you cooking
Two picnic shelters and a park building at Newell provide "places to gain relief from the rain." There are also grills for "cooking." But the key clue here is the word "serve," which is something a butler might do. This, of course, is a reference to Newell Park's northern boundary -- Pierce Butler Route.
Clue no. 5 Opposites attract and that's a fact Even if your mood's cloudy and foul This simple truth might help you extract The prize being sought by all
The opposite of "cloudy and foul" is "fair." This is a double clue that points to Newell Park's location nera the State Fairgrounds and to the fact that it is bordered by Fairview Avenue.
Clue no. 6 A well-trained eye is one reason why A good hunter stays on the attack This is a lesson you need to apply If you want to be on the right track "A well-trained eye" and "the right track both refer to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks located just north of the park.
Clue no. 7 A pleasant scene and a turning machine Might help you court our treasure It's there somewhere in between If you can make the right measure A "pleasant scene" is a "fair view," as in Fairview Avenue, located on the west side of Newell Park. "A turning machine" refers to Wheeler Street, on the park's east side. "Court" refers not only to the park's basketball and tennis courts but also to the fact that Pierce Butler -- after whom the road on the north side of the park is named -- was a member of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Clue no. 8 Find where kids play and you won't go astray Especially if you spot arches nearby This should make it easier to locate your way Amid obstacles that otherwise mystify Besides referring to the playgrounds in Newell Park, this clue provides two other hints. The "arches nearby" is a reference to the shape of the windows on the park building. Finally, the last word of the third line, "way," and the first word of the fourth line, "amid," can easily be reversed to suggest Midway -- the area of St. Paul in which Newell Park is located.
Clue no. 9 There's a place in our park for a leisurely arc Find it and you'll be in the treasure's vicinity Look also for colors that catch the eye And remember you're not far from divinity There are three clues here. "Leisurely arc" refers to the movement of the bench swing that serves as one of the main locators for the medallion. "Colors that catch the eye" can be found on the brightly colored children's playgrounds in the park. "Remember that you're not far from divinity" refers to the St. Paul Saints
We need somethign to heat water in so we can make coco or maybe coffee. Any ideas?
Yeah, I can see novices doing that (not registering a button) I didnt the first year I did this. I was too late.
does tonight replace the re-hash bash? why meet twice? up to everyone else i guess.
I'll see you all there, I am bringing my sis down, we were there this afternoon when the news broke, almost drove off of the Lafayetee Bridge on the way home.
Clue no. 10 A president or two will be of help to you If you're becoming a bit downcast But to fully appreciate this wonderful clue Know that one is first instead of last The "president or two" mentioned here are Zachary Taylor and Franklin Pierce, both U.S. presidents and both found in the names of streets around the park -- Taylor Avenue and Pierce Butler Route. "Know that one is first instead of last" refers to that fact that Franklin Pierce's last name is Pierce Butler's first name.
Clue no. 11 For treasure lore and much much more Here's advice you'll never regret To get near the place you're looking for It would be wise to go with a vet This clue's last three words -- "with a vet" -- form an anagram for Hewitt Avenue, on the southern edge of the park, not far from the treasure's hiding place.
Clue no. 12 It would really be cruel is you missed our jewel Which lies in a pack of cards known as Ace So get yourself out to the park named Newell And go south of the pavilion to find the place Look for a thing where two lovers can swing We assure you it's our best serach enhancer Just go west 35 paces and you could be king This, Regis, is our final answer
Directs hunters to the medallion's location approximately 35 paces west of the bench swing in Newell Park.
Sumpin' for water...
I can bring the carn-on-the-cob pot... *IF* I can find it...
leelabell, where did you get those other clues and what about clues 8 and 9?
Oh my God, those clues are lame. Telling us its in Midway AFTER they tell us the street names? Give me the job! PP, do you hear me?!!!!!
oKAY GANG, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FINAL CLUE? :)
Clue no. 12
It would really be cruel is you missed our jewel
Which lies in a pack of
cards known as Ace
So get yourself out to the park named Newell
And go south of the pavilion to find the place
Look for a thing where two lovers can swing
We assure you it's our best serach enhancer
Just go west 35 paces and you could be king
This, Regis, is our final answer
Clues 8 and 9 are posted earlier - they are on the web site. And, I agree they are lame!
Some good clues-and a couple of atrocious ones.I thought "opposites attract" would mean magnet.Thus-a magnet school.I looked in the phone directory under schools, but no school seemed quite in proximity to the park.
Let's not get this to be too complicated! We'll have the rehash bash pot luck picnic next Sunday.
They are on the PP web site
Well... I got #6 right, as far as "well-trained eye" and trains and tracks.
Guess I can't have everything! :>
Well, you folks have a good time in Newell Park.Better build a fire.Hey-you could sing campfire songs.
how do you get the clues????
Just thought it would be nice to have something hot to drink on a cold night
It been great working with all of you again - Maybe next year it will be one of our years!!! Why don't people buy the darn button? - Jill - P.S. I think Pie and Vegas women need to get together :)
I first thought of RR tracks, but mostly discounted it as something not part of or close to a park.Concentrated on tracks for human activity.
Terry, did you email MedallionStallion?
My thoughts are that they used a new clue-writer :) this time around, they never have ever used so many stupid references to streets as they did this year, its a clear sign of inexperience, and lame clue writing. Although somehow he/she knew to put it in newell, after last year, heh, i bet that part was no mistake. And not to mention the accident with the tri-ad-newell thing, that may not have been meant but it sent alotta people there from this board yesterday afternoon/evening, and i would guess today too. I'm glad it was a quick hunt though, shows that it doesnt have to be a 11-12 day hunt every year, which should get people off their duffs sooner. One lesson to be learned, if ya cant match the clues to a certain park, go with the majority ;) Anyone catch the last line in the last clue? lmao-heh well been fun, see yall next year -^^-Okie Dokie-^^-
They'd been hunting an hour...
ONE HOUR!!!!!
Unless there's a golf course near Newell Park,I don't see the neccesity to even mention a golf course in Clue#1.
I thought the PP internet piece said five hours total.Still better than the guy at Como awhile back who wasn't even searching for it.He walks past all the activity, spots it on a hill, and snatches it up.
While I should have been out digging, I was in the back yard sawing up an old tree to bring for wood. Let's burn it in effigy.
I CAN"T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!
I gotta say, . . .
there's nothing much to say I guess . . .
I'm heading out to Newell, hopefully someone will bring some kindling and matches.
I had all of the clues nailed!!!!!!
no lie!!!!
I was missing the luck factor.
Huh. Well, no media-induced frenzy this year.
Allison -
I bow to your greater instincts. You were RIGHT. Did teh person who find it use the cooler??
Huh. Well, no media-induced frenzy this year.
heh i feel for ya golden boy :) how was linwood? :)
party at newell----8:00!!!!!!!!tonight!!!!!!!
Being that the medallion was up for 10,000 again this year, they should have had better clues or a better clue writer to make the hunt last longer than ending after only 7 clues.
Allison, you were sure right about what you said last night: the clues being easy and obvious, yet to go with them anyways.
GoldenBoy - i tied emailing your address last night to come out with me and my bud to newell, but i got returned mail from saintlyB :(
Stallion, I yust emailed you.
We're meeting at Newell at 8:00 for a Pity Party. I'm bringing dogs and buns
and lots of different mustards, and some chile sauces for ketchup, and some
normal mustards and ketchup...
Can you make it???
Got any thing to boil water in for coffee/cocoa???
The writer probably knew that some rookie would go out digging and find it without a registered button or the clues. Or they tipped someone off because they knew the clues they wrote were lame and they wanted to end it.
I drove by both linwood and newell at a about 11:30 today - on my way to Como / Parade with the kids. Five poor souls at LINWOOD - I offered to start a support group.
the garage logic think tank will meet in the bird in maplewood tonight to ponder our lack of success and plan for next year
allison is always right. thats why i reiterate what he says, so i look smart!!!!just kidding!!!!
medstallion- will you be there tonight?
Doc, hit Newell. We're havin'a shin-"dig" there at 8:00 p.m.
Sorry Dave -
Old e-mail address - I should update it. Were you on the cooler last year?
Hey green, do you know if ww has ever registered his button? You seem to know him.
I have a show that I'm going to at my Alma Mater tonight, but I can swing by after depending on how late you'all are there!
yes, we hunted at conway :) i just havent been around much this year
I sure am going to miss those WEB CROSSING errors.... :(
I think it will be late. A lot of sulking to do!
like the idea for a Linwood park support group, heh
Swing by. You never know...
Cold, I'm willing to bet a buck WW registered his button. The guy's a true
Cooler Crew Member and a great digger. He's got the bug bad. There is NO WAY WW
would *not* register his button!
Might I suggest a theme song for the 'pity party'?SEARCHIN' by The Coasters
WEELLLLLLL--I BENNN' SEARCHIN'(OH YEAH)SEARCHIN' EVERYWHIIIIIIICH WAY--YAYYAYYAYYAY---
like how they went with the old-style black and white photograph of the finder, kinda looks like the old pictures from the hunts in the 50's and 60's
I can be there around 10ish. Are we aloud to bring alchohol to a puclic park? I don't know if I could hit NEWELL w/out a drink first . . .
anyone know bandit? is he a *true* hunter? He promised to take me under his wing, and know I havn't seen him. Sob Sob.
green, then how come they said he only gets 5,000 cause he didn't register it. That's what they said on the news.
Dave, you *must* come tonite and sing for us! ;)
Anyone know about what time that fraud found MY medallion?
I went to check on it this afternoon and it was still there at around 3p
I remember now. That was after Woodduck and I spent the better part of two days and a long evening at Newell. We were right about Newell - just a year too early. Maybe next year it'll be at Linwood??!!
no alchohol, at least that is what terry says.
OK, everyone, now lets look at the clues.... it has to be at Newell, so whoever is digging anywhere else is a foowell... LOL... now look clue 7 has the names of the streets... and so i'm going there tonight to dig... bye!! (still in MAJOR denial and refuses to accept the coin being found)
Cold, he got $5,000 for finding it. Guess besides not registering his button,
he didn't have his clues on him... Else he'd have gotten $7,500.
wtg this close...
good luck
Hey doesn't anyone know it was found? I would just like to what in and where in Newell
The reason I know about the no alcohol rule is that I've used the city parks for events for some programs I coordinate for work. There is a no alcohol rule in all the parks.
No, you get 2,500 for finding it and 2,500 more for the clue clippings and if you have a registered button then you get 5,000 more.
if he went home for 20 minutes to wait for his wife, isn't that a dirrect breakage of a rule? (must go straight to pioneer press building to redeem prize)
Terry, do you have anything to boil water in?
JOE!!!
i'll just have to be a little sneaky then . . .
sorry green, I don't
I'll look. Some of our stuff is up north.
I think we're bringing a case of Coca Cola. (I never did like coffee)
Someone give me an update please. Who found it?
I gotta run, but I'll see ya'll t'nite around 10 if anyone is still there . . .
Troy, got the PP front page. All info there.
Medallion found in Newell Park
John Davoli didn’t trust his wife to stay calm when he found the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion as they were searching together in St. Paul’s Newell Park Saturday afternoon. So he told her he had enough searching for one day, went home and waited for her there. He considered calling her on her cell phone to tell her to come home quick, but he was concerned she might start screaming in the middle of the park and get mobbed by the 200 other searchers who were still there.
"I knew if I called her she would go hysterical,’’ said Davoli, 40.
"He didn’t tell me. He left without me,’’ said Lori Davoli, 38.
So she spent 20 more fruitless minutes digging in the snow before giving up, going home and finding the medallion in her husband’s hand. It turned out John was right about how she would react.
"I was jumping up and down. I was in shock. Just hysterical,’’ she said.
The St. Paul couple said they are frequent medallion searchers. Lori Davoli said she remembers looking for the medallion the last time it was found in Newell Park 15 years ago. She said she was one week away from giving birth to the first child, but she was out there digging at night with a shovel that had a flashlight taped to the handle.
This year, the couple said they spent four or five hours studying the clues and consulting dictionaries to check alternate meanings of the words om some of the hints. But they said they had only been digging about an hour and a half before Davoli spotted a flash of red in the snow that he was turning over with a hoe. The spot was near the bench swing in the park in the Midway area of St. Paul. Davoli immediately pocketed what he found, a cardboard box for a set of Bicycle playing cards. The medallion was hidden inside.
The family will get $5,000 for the find. They missed out on an additional $5,000 because they failed to get a registered Winter Carnival button.
I am soooooo sad. I didn't think it was Newell becasue it seemed to easy. I guess it was to easy.
Bummer............
Bummer............Time to start thinking about MN Wild season tx
Well ya'll see ya next year!
already have my tix!!!!
damn i was looking for other coverage on the medallion finder (didnt find any) but www.kmsp.com has developed into a better site than www.wcco.com
kinda cool check them out if you like local news sites
Green - Nothing here that we can put over a fire. Must be north. Sorry!
Tim - you pick out your seats yet?? Our appt to pick seats is on Tuesday AM.
Actually 3.2 beer is permitted in some of the parks, though no alcohol is permitted in Newell. I suspect most of you would need something stronger that that, anyways. Lament for the medallion!!!!
Also, I propose a mini medallion hunt of our own tonight...a little something to ease our pain...so that we may have the pleasure of witnessing a coolerhead find the darn thing for once.
as in Boreas' direction?!?!?!?!
LOL!!!!!! I guess so.
Going fro. Need to get ready. 8:00 is fast approaching.
If anyone has something to boil water in, bring it tonight!
Thanks for the tip Dave... by the way, you don't even have an e-mail address in your profile.
gotta get going, see ya'll there!!!
yeah no one seems to have one
email jrayl@uswest.net
mine is in my profile....
Hey did any of you know that The clues descriptions are up already? When was the earliest ever that the medallion has been found - was it clue #5??
Then again years ago they had two clue per day. One in the PP (AM)and one in the Dispatch (PM).
Are there still plans for a bash next Saturday at Newell? I left Newell when everyone else did this afternoon. I was one of the one's who called PP to verify the bad news for the rest of us still out there. It was real weird when the news got to us (everyone still out digging) because all of a sudden things stopped and people got real quite. Then people started picking up their tools, yelling for the kids, and walking toward their vehicles. You just knew it was all over and the feeling of disappoint hint like a rock. IT CAN'T BE OVER YET!!! IT'S TOO SOON!! My hubby was there yesterday morning for many hours and we came back this afternoon. Prior committments kept us away earlier today. Anyway, luck had it's factors for the Davoli's prize winning today. I was very surprised that none of us here in the cooler found it. I was so sure it would be one of us this year. I just knew who ever found it today was not going to receive the full $10,000. I hope Mom PP will keep the prize at $10,000 for now on. Someone please e-mail me and let me know if the bash will be on for next Saturday. Congrats to the Davoli's.
Hi, Golden Boy. I met you last year at Conway and I also called you on your cell phone with the clue. I don't know if you'd remember me. I did have an opportunity to talk to you this year. I wasn't going to stay up and discuss clues at midnight. I hope PP also changes the time back to 11:30. They can keep the clue clippings being needed but change back the on-line clue be posted.
Treasure Digger - Yes it's on for next Sunday! Newell Park...probably about noon. Pot luck.
Ian is bringing his sloppy joe medallions.
|
Terry: I have a propane gas
thing to heat water if you need something to heat water. |
Terry, I was hoping to meet you this year. I found your pictures as well as the others on the "cooler crew" web site. I sure am hoping to see everyone next Saturday. Don't have any committments then. I hope Steve will be there for a group picture. He said something about a picture yesterday but no one was counting on the medallion to be found so soon. It's still hard to realize it's over. I'm happy about them finding it, but my kids are disappointed about not being able to play for many days. My hubby and I find it quality family time and not just at home in front of TV or computer. I feel cheated I guess in a way.
DDY - I think what we need is a pan that can be put on a fire. We got rid of some and took some north I think. Do you have a pan?
Of course I remember Treasure Digger. You were there with your kid(s). I think I was there with mine also. Like you I am EXTREMELY disappointed. I actually wanted the PP to get crafty like they did last year and have us chasing to different park until clue 8 or 9. But this one was NP all the way - Allison W had it pegged. Well hopefully they'll make it harder next year. After all it doesn't make sense for them to have these incentives to buy papers (ie; clue on line at 12:00 vs 11:30 AND save the clippings) if they're going to make it so easy. That's teh only part that still doesn't make sense to me!
Golden Boy, the earliest it's ever been found is with 0 clues. It was found before the hunt began by a couple at highland. They went there for an evening walk. The man wanted to propose to his girlfriend but wanted to propose at their favorite bench which just happened to be the bench the medallion was taped to. That was the year when 2 treasure chests were hidden.
The rehash bash is on Sunday!!!!!!
Golden Boy, I believe I was talking with you when my hubby called me on my cell phone and told me to quit flirting and start digging. Had to really laugh at that. Didn't really have a chance to do that this year. Maybe next year will prove different.
Good info TD - but besides that - has there ever been a year where it was this easy to pinpoint the park this early via the clues. Maybe for a big park - yes. But this has got to be the earliest they've given away a SMALL park.
You know, I was pretty sure it was at Newell on the 5th clue but with the next 2 clues I was positive. Even though I was so sure, a part of me started thinking that maybe it was found at a different park. I was going to be shocked it that was the case. On our way home from Newell, we started saying that we should go digging there tomorrow just for the heck of it. Just to get it out of our systems.
|
Terry: No pan.
Darn! |
digging or flirting?
!)
Maybe a little of both. Have to have fun some how while digging. It makes the time pass by. I'm looking for the answer to your question on how few of clues in my binder.
In 1995 it was found after the 6th clue.
Was it by dumb luck - or did they pinpoint the park - Which park?
It was found by 3 bridge playing women. They had been looking for the medallion for 3 decades. It was found at Battle Creek after the 6th clue. It was in a yarn pouch. No mention of luck in description.
Actually, that was the year the clues spelled out Battle Creek.
I hope I don't have to wait 30 YEARS, or start playing bridge, before I find it. EEEEWWWWWWW.....
The last year it was made of metal was in 1987 when it was found by using a metal detector. It was found in Indian Mounds Park.
Interesting in 1953 it was found on the 7th clue and PP decided to hide a 2nd treasure chest. Wouldn't it be nice if they hid it again at a lower prize amount?
Although - Battle Creek is a BIG PARK. I still think that this has been the EASIEST hunt of all time - I grew up in StP - and I don't remember it ever being this easy.
Either we're getting a lot SMARTER or the clue writer is getting alot DUMBER.
Back in '53 that would have been on the 4th day - back then they published two clues a day - one in the PP and one in the Dispatch. By the way ... I wasn't around in '53.
I think technology has changed so much through the years that we've become a little bit (okay maybe a lot) more creative at figuring them out. In the beginning, the clues seem to be a lot hard especially when they didn't just hide it in a park. There are only so many parks in Ramsey County and with computers making it easier to discuss the clues with many, many people the support group is there when it wasn't in the past.
where was it found in '53 - a BIG PARK?
In 1953 it was found in Cherokee Park in a snowbank and at the State Fairgrounds in a large bush near the Poultry Bldg. In 1953 there were 13 clues and the only day it doubled was on the last day. The other clues were just as they are today.
I'm just full of information tonight.
You've got a point TD. That's why last year's hunt was a riot - they had us going to Newell (remember "as WELL as the NEW") then Merriam then finally Conway. Because we're figuring this stuff out quicker - I thought they woudl stay with the same strategy of sending people out on a wild chase, park hopping every 2 - 3 clues.
But this one was NP all the way. Except for the idiotic suggestion in clue #1 of Swede Hollow ("vikings depression").
I'm so bummed....I barely had a chance to hunt this year. I was looking really forward to getting the clue tonight.
The parks that have been used the most for the hunt are Como, Harriet ISland, Highland. This is only the 2nd time for been at Newell.
Thanks for the info TD - I've gotta get me one of those. Is that the Treasure Hunters Guide you're going by?
I'm not using the Treasure Hunter's Guide. I'm using a binder that I've gathered information from the internet, my neighbor, and the PP. I have parks, clues, newspaper clippings, summary info. on the parks. I also wrote down streets and surrounding info. from last year when we were scoping out the parks. It really came in handy this year.
I've downloaded many parks from the Ramsey Cty. parks and map quest. The Treasure Hunter's Guide is helpful but it definitely can't be your only source of referral.
WOW - you should develop, publish, and market it. That's gotta be an easier way to make 10 G's. Plus - you can write-off you treasure hunting time as a business expense. I like the sound of that!
well it is time to gather the garage logic think tank together and head out to the bird in maplewood be there sometime after 9:00 so close this year yet so far
It's helpful to start your search with maps and then the previous year's as to where it's been hidden. Also, what's going on at each park is another helpful tool. It definitely pays off to join in on the discussions here to share ideas with other hunters. So much good help is shared here between everyone. It's too bad that there are probably so many more just reading info. and not trying to share their thoughts. Oh well.
Agreed.
I wouldn't consider what I have to be publishing material. I've just spent too much time printing things and typing them than I probably should have. I always bring my binder with me when I'm digging. If I see you next year, I'd be happy to show it to you. My husband started laughing at me when I first started putting the thing together, but now it's the first thing he asks for when the second clue appears.
Time to get the kids ready for bed. We were outside all day - from about 10:00 to 4:00 at Como, Downtown, and the Parade. DAMN... I should have been shovelin'.
Hey - there's another little business idea TD. Make bumper stickers saying "I'd Rather Be Shovelin'". No-one except coolers would know what it meant.
I like that idea, Golden Boy. Maybe that should be your extra money next year. I bet you'd make $10,000 on them alone. Have a good night. Thanks for chatting with me tonight. I'll see you out there next year!!!!
TD - You going to the Re-Hash Bash next Saturdaty at NP?
GB, it's actually going to be on SUNDAY around noon is what Terry Valentine said earlier. I'm going to put it on my calendar and REALLY try to be there. How about you?
Bummer - my son's got hockey at 1:40. Guess not. We'll see you next year. Take care - Goodnight.
Good night, GB. See ya next year, unless you can come earlier to the park or skip the hockey. But priorities makes the choice harder.
Treasure Digger's signing off. Hope to meet a lot of you next Sunday at Newell.
just got in...
could someone let me know at what time and where at Newell they found it....Thanks
I'll try earlier. Otherwise I'll probably be the one you see at LINWOOD next year digging like a mad-man after the 1st clue. I think the web-site is all yours tonight. I've gotta go.
Barf, you caught me before I logged off. It was found this afternoon by the 2 adult swing. It was a bench for 2 people about 35 paces inside of an ACE playing card box. If you look at PP's afternoon edition on line you'll find the article on the man and his family.
I've really got to go now. My better half is yelling at me because I've been on way too long and the hunt's over. Bye for now.
Does anybody know where it was found in front of the becnch swing. I dug 1/2 way between bench and rock this am and had to leave to pick up kids..... At least we were close.
Sorry to everybody who I misled. I am extremely depressed right now that it was already found...I am going to bed, see you all in a year.
ShovelM you just gave your best nobody was right on all the clues...
What a bummer, this year the hunt sure wasn't much fun. Didn't get to see hardly anyone. oh well, now i can get some sleep and also get some work done around the house. Maybe clean under the couch cushions and maybe find damn coins. Bye all
I think it's in a playing card box in Newell Park. I'm going out to look first thing in the morning.
Man! This SUX soooooo much! I didn't even get a chance to go out. My first time ever not getting super-close to the Medallion. I'm really bummed. I was just getting ready to go out too. I had it all planned out where to look and everything!! and only after 7 clues!!! well, I'll see you all next year. I don't think I'll be able to make it to the re-hash bash though. -PEACE I'M OUTTA HERE!- :o)
New Daddy - all of the clues and the explanations are out now. It was 35 paces from the bench swing
anyone still around?
I think there was a bit of overkill in the clues - they referred to Pierce Butler 3 different times. Like, OK ALREADY!!
thanks to all of my new/old friends for softening the blow of a premature end to the medallion hunt.
P.S. little laura says hi!
Wish I would've stayed on a few minutes longer around 5. I would've heard about the pity party at Newell. Went out to Famous Dave's instead. How was it? I take it people are still there from the silence here.
well, see ya all next Sunday at the rehash! Gonna toddle to bed. Gotta get up early for choir. Bye!
I just returned from the pity party!!!! We had an extremely fun time! Well as much fun as could be expected considering the circumstances.
Well there is always next year.
Right, What about Bob, Big E, Phil, Todd and Jim.
We will dominate in 2001.
my *pops* went cyber! I had a good time at our pity party! It is good to put faces with names. I will see you all at the Re-Hash Bash on Sunday!
Hey how was the PARTY!
Did the big DUMMY show up? You Know, the guy who found it!
What's with these idiots who can't figure out how to get another 5 big bones!
Sorry I missed the party but I figured yall wouldn't want me there!

PEACE AND LOVEEEEEEEEE
I wrote the clues!
Oh, did you now, Mr. Popular
Cooler Crew 0-3?
Say it aint so, JOE, say it ain't so!!
..................signing off for another year...............
(If you put hours into hunt preparations, DON'T think that you can give up half a day doing piddly household crap, then come back to the hunt. It will be OVER.
Peace out... Ian, Medallion Searcher, and King Boreas
Yes, I am bringing Sloppy Joe Medallions to the:
