Also, the "anti-clues": Seven clues and no (deliberate) reference to the park name, which tends to eliminate the bigger parks. No mention of water, which elimnates the ones associated with a significant body of water Like Como or Phalen or even Marydale.

A high level, gov't security official working to make sure the medallion does not fall into the wrong hands...

AW - When at NP last night late, the place was just shredded. Could the hiding place be so difficult that they would dead-eye the park this early when it is such a small area?

What about "rapscallion"? Any theories? I am still hooked on Phalen. It hasn't been there since '83.

An automobile is a machine, but not one whose primary purpose is to turn, though it can turn. Why?

I have heard that Phalen was not a good person. A friend's mother says she remembers something about Phalen being notorious. That has kept me stuck on Phalen.

TooManySecrets, that one thing I'm not sure about and actually kind of dread. In clue 7 last year they gave away Wilson, but that was just one street and it was a much harder clue. Maybe they didn't realize how obvious it was getting? It did take several hundred people 3 days of digging at Conway to find it, plus the digging that had taken place prior to those last 3 days.

Usually the water clue refers to a large amount of water like a lake or river.

There are hand-pumped wells along the track of Phalen.

Has it ever been on a beach?

How do we know that one of us writing now isn't the writing the clues? I could be the clue writer???

No way to know at all Tom. I already accused Newell Pfool once of being the cluewriter because it seems like its always at Newell in the beginning.

And remember, if its not at Newell, the cluewriter would have to be some kind of genius to make it seem like it was and yet not be. After reading the explantions of the clues in the past, does anyone think that?

A problem I have with Phalen is its inaccessability at night. I was told by somebody that when they locked up the gates the other night the police were making people leave. I dont think they want people sneaking in after dark.

Phil's Girl - 11:20am Jan 29, 2000 CST (#8099 of 28288) Mark Reply

I think they don't want it found until the end and purposely send us all over until the end. I spent three days last year at Conway and couldn't beleive it wasn't found.

The simple explanation: for Newell Park

Clue #1- In a St. Paul park, not on a golf course.

Clue #2- Still not 100% sure myself. Might just mean the park has tennis courts.

Clue #3- There are a couple of towers visible from the park (attempt to be sneaky coming up) Look for the MEDALLION in Boreas' direction (north by my interpretation).

Clue #4- The park has multiple picnic shelters

Clue #5- The park is near the State Fair

Clue #6- The park is near train tracks

Clue #7- The park lies between Fairview (pleasant scene) and Wheeler (a turning machine).

Doubts about Newell:

Clue #2: setting your pace? astute/statue?

Clue #3: has it been ruled out that King Boreas' direction means toward downtown St. Paul? If so, are there towers visible when looking toward downtown St. Paul from Newell?

Clue #4: "cooking." Sure there are BBQ grills at Newell, but they are at many parks

Clue #5: opposites attract. I haven't heard any discussion about magnet schools lately, has this theory been dropped? There is no magnet school by Newell, or is there?

I guess it just seems like many of the clues could apply to just about any park, and therefore how can we be justified in being certain it's Newell?

The simple explanation: Newell Park

Clue #1- In a St. Paul park, not on a golf course.

Clue #2- You have to pace off from something to get the medallion or it Might just mean the park has tennis courts.

Clue #3- There are a couple of towers visible from the park Look for the MEDALLION in Boreas' direction (north by my interpretation).

Clue #4- The park has multiple picnic shelters

Clue #5- The park is near the State Fair

Clue #6- The park is near train tracks

Clue #7- The park lies between Fairview (pleasant scene) and Wheeler (a turning machine).

Clue #5 "Opposites Attract" that seems to have some puzzled, could it mean the opposites new and old, NEWell park and the old tradition of the medallion hunt/Winter Carnival?

Regalman - 12:16pm Jan 29, 2000 CST (#8176 of 28288) Mark Reply

Something is telling me that everyone who disagrees with newell, was an ex-newell fan last year. clue 1- St. Paul stay off of G.C.; last letter of first line, obsession and medallion, both ending in "N" clue 2- tennis; last word of first line ace, ending in "E" clue 3- Look north and you'll see the towers; first line ending "W" clue 4- picnic shelters and BBQ's; "serve" and "Cooking" possibly meaning BUTLERthe word well going together with the NEW from the end of the clues making NEW WELL clue 5- the streets surrounding the tennis courts are Clayland and Fairview-N+S, and Hewitt North and Hewitt South same name opposite directions, Cloudy and Foul= Fairgrounds. clue 6- hawkeye PIERCE as in Pierce and clue 4 Butler the Northern street. clue 7- Fairview, Wheeler, and Taylor streets, and inbetween them is NEWELL

Predig gig- Saturday, January 19th- McGovern's!

Good Afternoon!

One half of this hunting team has left for Newell. I'll be headed there in a little bit.

I find it hard to figure out why anyone wouldn't think it was Newell...but then we don't all think alike.

There is lots of areas of Newell that were untouched last night. Walked over but not dug. I suspect that more digging will be done today and won't be as easy to see what's been dug and what hasn't.

My theory on why it has been easier to figure out Newell this year is because we're more familiar with the park after last year and when it was last hidden there in 1984. The 954 clue last year at Conway would only be somewhat obvious to anyone familiar with that park as the medallion had never been hidden there - thus making it harder to figure that out as early.

Live report from the field--Newell park has over 200 diggers currently. Some are fixated on Tennis Court that is a seperate part of the park on the west side. That team will have it excavted in less than an hour from now. Many people digging below the two outdoor picnic shelters. They too will finish today. Most people are between Pierce Butler Route and the basketball courts on North side. Best view of any northen towers. except for a gap where the train yards are, about mid park, no towers are visible from trees. Significan nortern towers veiwable from any spot--Ag hort building, Space needle, Sate fair water tower--all at state fair--and on U of MN campus--two water towers, a smokestack, and the college of Biological science building... hope this helps!

Hello, >Palace rec. center fits todays clue nicely. View st. borders the east side of the park, from there You can view Pleasant Ice Arena up on the Crocus Hill. Also looking east to St.Paul ( king Boreas Direction) There is two playground towers next to each other and one tower by itself. I Know, I Know, Alot of parks seem to fit these clues in one way or another. Thats Why we are here helping each other for ideas.

note number two regarding newell--snow depth not very deep, except for areas that abut the various roadways--whatever its hidden in, provided it's at newell, is not big, or it would stick above snow! Previous suggestions such as a newspaper do not seem to make sense. Use a GARDEN rake--some snow is packed from all the people walking on it now. Helps make big chunks of hard snow into little chunks of hard snow! Take it easy on the grass though.

I have been looking at cherokee I know this is a long shot but here goes:

1. Park in St Paul

2. Not much of anything if you look in past clues the second clue a lot of times doesn't refer to much of anything

3. Smoke Stacks accross the river

4. Pavillions aplenty - Baker street runs into Cherokee Ave

5. Cloudy and foul = Mississippi River Opp/attract ped and bike side walk and E. and W. Water street join here

6. cherokees use to HUNT for their food and stay on the attack until it was found (just like us we hunt for med until it is found)

7. Merry Go Round?? Haven't been out there today to see what else this fits but they all seem to work out

Highland Park---hardly anyone was in the "park" on Montreal...but there were tons of people in the race track...and in the tennis courts! The only thing I can't figure out is how today's clue relates to Highland Park 2. Linwood Park--no one is there!!!! 3. Newell park...this was the most packed park!!! People were digging everywhere! I think the medallion may be between the tennis courts and the state fair ride (turning machine) off in the distance. Any other ideas? 4. Como Park was incredibly packed...but for the events I think...it's too busy there to hide the Medallion there...and 5. Phalen Park (finally found it!) is not even touched! No one is there looking!!! Plus there are no towers over there!

Any more ideas?!

Roses are red, violets are blue, I'm schizophrenic, and so am I.

Everyone at Newell just looks dazed and confused...I love it...we know its there but there is no real logic to the clues as to placement...happy hunting...see you all out there.

k.....where is Cherokee...how does one get there? Is it over the high bridge in downtown St. Paul? And are there many people there?!

The game's afoot!

Because everyone was at Newellt this time last year...just as gung-ho.

But this year Newell fits every clue without stretching....I won't be positive until tonight but I can't make any other park fit without some major clue-mangling.

Jst have to say one thing--i've been reading everyones coments about the park it may be in. Everyone has valid points on to what the clues may be. But I think you are all forgetting one thing, from clue number seven. This is just my guess, but it fits so good I'm convinced i'm right.

Newell is still up top...but it's still early and that could all change tonight.

I had good feelings about phalen earlier...we'll see.

dibgy I agree newell is looking worse and worse.I am thinking mounds is moving up on my list the only thing is that the beacon at mounds is sitting on the bluff looking southish...there is a running track there and there is always a god awful smell(foul) coming from the st.paul sewer treatment plant below the bluffs, ironically next to pioneer press hdquatrs.

Response to post way up there: Mound looks alright. The airport beacon thing is excellent, the pleasant view and a couple other things work, but, these same things work almost anywhere. This is the most stumping year that I've been a part of. Response to other post way up there: Dont know where you're coming from, but Cherokee park borders West St. Paul on one side and the river on the other. It sits at the High end of the high bridge, you can reach it by taking Smith avenue from West 7th St. go over the high bridge and take the first right.

To everyone else: I went to Newell last night just to see it (refresh my memory from many a day spent there last year), c'mon people: Newell Sucks. I am more sure than ever that it isn't there. Not every single clue points to the name of a street surrounding the park of choice. I've heard a whole lot of clues pointing out Newell's surrounding streets, but not much else.

Hi there destiny.. I believe sunny delight refrences opposite of cloudy and foul: Sunny & delight. It was an old idea from a few hundred posts back.

miller they only want u to look north for the towers i think the beacon is just a reference point to use to line up the treasure like they did at como direction does not matter i dont like mound because the tower could be anything from there thats whats kept me away to many buildings there (the whole skyline infact lol

Just got back from Newell. So many people came and went as I sat and dug my heart out. I worked harder than ever before so sure I had "the spot" you know that feeling that it just feels right!!! Wrong!! But now it's wait for the next clue. I told Q to call if anything fits otherwise I'll wait for morning. I'm getting too old for this!!

DIGBY- I see your point I think we have all got it in our heads that the towers must been seen in the disatnce from the north. I would like to dispell this, but it is hard!

gahnzo45 - 03:57pm Jan 29, 2000 CST (#8295 of 28288) Mark Reply

Destiny, at Phalen, NOT by the beach area, but more north towards Keller. You have to get to that part of the park from Hwy 61 (arcade) then turn off. Its near frost ave. and Gateway trail. You can see the towers by KSTP from there.

digby - 03:58pm Jan 29, 2000 CST (#8296 of 28288) Mark Reply

the reason i am so stuck to the capital is because of the viking stattue , clue 1 and 2 talk about curing a viking depression , and u know dam well this was not written 2 weeks ago so i think they are indeed talking about the actual statue in the park ....

Grandma Red - 04:04pm Jan 29, 2000 CST (#8297 of 28288) Mark Reply

Viking depression... So just how many years have we had Viking depression this time of the year??? Chances were pretty darn good that MN fans would have Viking depression...! I'm now depressed over my new obsession......

digby - 04:06pm Jan 29, 2000 CST (#8298 of 28288) Mark Reply

miller the towers must be north but the beacon doesnt have to be its a second reference point or maybe third to get an intersection that the prose will be , but a beacon is a better turning machine than a carosel or the state fair ride , and if it was the state fair ride at newell that means it would be a third tower because , they used it once already in the riddle any thoughts on this

Hi, popped out for a minute. I dont know about the capitol. It wouldnt be against the rules for it to be there, I just wonder if they really want it there. It keeps me away to say the least.

To get to Indian Mounds Park (from downtown st paul): take Kellogg, go over the bridge. Take the first immediate right after the bridge and follow instructions to the park.

To get to Cherokee (from west 7th), take 7th st to Smith, go over the high bridge and take an immediate right after the highbridge.

Digby- The towers are to the west. A smokestack and a radio tower (owned by Capital 2-way communicataion). King Boreas direction is north or east - probably where the medallion is located.

I am also not sold on Newell, but was after the fourth clue.

some people are using State Fair rides as references. Curious why? Other than the Space Tower, all other rides are gone for the year. Not visible from Newell. I just couldn't remember how bad the view of the fairgrounds and train tracks is from Newell till I went there last night and verified it..

I think the only reference to the Fair should be the clue about the opposite of Foul

Digby, still think Phalen. Though Mounds could work. That damn beacon used to light up my wifes bedroom all night. And she lived a block from Battle Creek
