My dictionary says "Cloudless". Maybe yours says something different. Clear can also mean cloudless. English tends to be redundant that way.

It doesn't matter though as I've said before. When you're out there digging, you look at EVERYTHING and worry later about how it fit the clues.

think the measure has no meaning to taylor... i think the measure will have to do with pace in an earlier clue... how many paces... yet to be given in clue. A Pace is a length of measurement

My guess, and its just a guess, is that measure refers to city blocks, in terms of figuring out how big a space is in between the two items.

Allison, I'm hip to your jive on clue five.

BUT. I still think that if you hide the medallion in a park next to fairview, just south of the fairgrounds, you know that once you refference the first, people will jump to the next. Right? So why bother with two refferences?

To be honest stallion, it seems to me these clues were not written all that well. I think we all expected a bigger challenge and so we keep assuming there's something deeper in all this than what seems to be obvious. But at this point I plan on bowing to the obvious and wondering how they could botch it up so badly. The cluewriter must not look in on us after all to see how we think.

Turning machine, that's been bothering me too.

It's either something literal: as in the spinning light on the tower at Mounds.

Or it's a metaphor for something else. If it's a metaphor for "wheel" that doesn't really fit for me, cause a wheel isn't a turning machine. You could come up with much better metaphors for Wheeler st. if that were your goal.

I'm starting to think Mounds . . .

The wheel, the inclined plane, and the lever are considered the three simple machines, and a wheel does spin.

At this point you have two options. You can either believe the cluewriter is an incredibly devious genius to make us all think its at Newell when its not, or you can believe they're not particularly clever. After reading the explanations for last year's clues, which do you think is more likely?

It is the Cafejians's Carousel <cafe-jians> "will serve to help you as your looking" or "a clue that will really get you cooking' - not a bad try - also I am sure the Carousel itself would be off limits but somewhere between that and the gardens? perhaps.

Newell was the last place I stopped tonight. I must say I only stopped there because so many seem to think it's there now. I will have to say, now that I have been out to Newell this year, I am almost positive it is not there. Fairview, pleasant, towers, etc. These clues fit just as well in about 6 different parks that I've scoped out now...and so far, everyone of them seems better than Newell. I was one of the first in Newell last year, and one of the last to leave, so I pretty much have avoided it this year, seeing as from memory...none of it seems to work...usually there is a street name or two included...but Newell people look at yourselves...you guys are turning practically every word into some street association...Going a little too far I think. I bet this treasure hunt goes right up to the end.

and of course always good to run in to mr. kirk condie as usual, always a good sign that you might be in the right park :) Besides Condie found it at Newell in 84, Cherokee in 92, and 8 years later it only makes sense that he finds it again in Newell Park 2000 !! ;) (you gotta keep your streak alive)

GOOD LUCK -^^- okie dokie -^^-

Predig gig- Saturday, January 19th- McGovern's!

Hiya Dave and DigginQueen! Nice meeting you too!

Interesting evening at Newell. Got there about 11 and did some scouting. Because of needing to see the multiple picnic shelters, we weren't as excited about the tennis courts as we were about the basketball and volleyball court.

Then onto the turning machine...There were several things we thought of as turning machines. First was the BNSF hub across Pierce Butler from the park. Then there was those hoe things in the playground area that scoop and then turn and then dump. The Wheeler thing though seemed the best fit.

And for those that doubt the hawkeye pierce connection to the one boardering street to Newell, look back at the clues from 1984. It was worded differently, but Hawkeye Pierce was used then too. Well trained eye would be a keen eye...sharp...piercing. And maybe it had nothing to do with Hawkeye - but it did for me.

For those of you, like me, spent some time at Newell last year to end up at Conway in the end, just think of it this way - We were only a year early or the person hiding the medallion was a year late.

Hope to see you all out there tomorrow. But first I will need some sleep.

Hey folks--I'm back from early morning digging at Newell....very sore, many people.....was slogging through the early morning messages, didn't stay up for clue--wow--people really get uptight at 2 am, don't they! If it's in Newell, it will be found soon. Even without the X spot clue, the Newell crew will hit it at random by 2pm

LLkisses - 10:09am Jan 29, 2000 CST (#8019 of 28288) Mark Reply

I still think that maybe people are streching things to make it fit or that they are just taking 1 or 2 words out of a phrase to make it fit. I don't know but it still seems that way for me.

LL--I can't get clue 2 to fit Newell--bothers me a bit. clue number five--opposite of cloudy and foul=fair as in MN state fair. I think clue number 2 does not refer to a specific park NOT EACH CLUE DOES, but rather tells you where in the park the disk is, in this case, I believe it is telling you the disk is away from well travelled areas.....

I wouldn't be surprised if the Medallion was found by the end of the weekend. In fact, I'd be surprised if it wasn't. So it looks like we may not even hit 10,000 posts this year. Got over 20,000 last year.

My thoughts are that because the most obvious towers in Newell are to the west, and the clue said to look in Boreas' direction, which I still say is to the north, it meant look for the medallion in the north.

Trying a new approch,

It is NOT at the fairgrounds (they are not in the city of St. Paul)

It is NOT at Mounds park to many morons go tramping on the mounds and get to many people upset. It is just not worth it for them to hide it there.

I really don't think it is at Newell. I just think a few people really want it to be.

I was liking the capital mall. But I think that is ruled out now.

Could be Highland. But I'm starting to think it is in a park that has not really hit the radar screen here in the water cooler.

So I am going to ponder over this map and start looking at places not mentioned here.

The thing to remember at this point in the game is that you can take any of the clues and find several parks to fit them. But for it to be the correct park, you have to have an explanation for every clue (unless there's one you have to admit you don't understand at all, like #2). And even then, if you have more than one park, you have to ask yourself if, as the cluewriter, was this what you would have meant in writing this clue, or is it that you yourself are taking things and making them fit?

There are towers to the north, like the thing at the state fair and other things coming off of Midway stadium, but the most obvious towers are to the west. It just seems odd that the cluewriter would refer to obscure towers in the distance when those other two were right there looming over them.

The next clue will either list two landmarks you can see from the hiding spot, or one landmark and a reference to what it is hidden in. My guess is it will say something about a big rock

I think clue 3 was the cluewriter's attempt to be sneaky and make you think it wasn't Newell because the towers were to the west. They must not have realized people would find other towers in the north to satisfy themselves. Nor do I think they realized that people would jump on clue 5 to mean Fairview when I think they just meant the State Fair. And all the times they used the word well. Its kind of ironic, What mainly sent people to Newell last year was a misinterpretation of the use of the words "well" and "new" in the same phrase. This year, I think people misinterpreted the clues again (including "triad newell" in my opinion), only this time, all the misinterpretations just sent them to the right park even faster!

I think clue 6 would read this way:

A well trained eye (an eye that sees a lot of trains, again trying to be clever) is one reason why a good (treasure) hunter stays on the attack (bizarre phrase that I can only assume was meant to rhyme with track). This is a lesson you need to apply (trains are something you should look for when hunting) if you want to be on the right track (be on the right trail, but also a reference to train track)

I agree green, and that's why I talked myself out of Newell for a while when it seemed obvious enough, but now the evidence seems to be overwhelming. I don't know if they're in a rush to get it over with (maybe don't want the park destroyed by too many days of digging?) or if they just have it hidden in such a hard to get to place that they think it will take us 6 days to find it.

My 1st posting( I finally figured out how to logon and post a message) I followed the Water Cooler messages last year, and AW was always on the mark with his interpretation of clues. I'd trust him this again this time. But, can we eliminate Highland altogether with it's disc golf today and clue 1sort of refering to it? Was at NP yesterday and all the clues did seem to fit, though.

You can never put faith in a park just because it fits one clue. I had a spot in Phalen nailed perfectly through the first four clues. But then it didn't fit the others so I had to give up on it. I don;t think Highland fits the clues well enough, or if you could make it fit them it wouldn't fit like Newell does.
