Thanks, I'm headin over to MONEYAPOLIS right now!
Where abouts over there?
See ya, LL.
Mom, hurry bock... Ittiz gonna be a big nite! Tho I'm going to toddle soon so
I can get some sleep in and [hopefully] go out after #7.
No, just kidding. It is on University just off of (ahem) Fairview.
Green -- are you lookin' by the pavilion or down by the other little shelter thingy at Phalen?
Alan and I are takin a little drive around town tonight - I'll come back with a update - hopefully tonights clue will help us. I was at Newell after work today not much happening and alot snow to turn. I was in that park for three days last year before I turned to Conway - I hope were not fooled again! - Jill
Neither, Step.
Well the only 2 places in my mind are well 3 but battle creek-not sure about this one though, then we have Newell- top choice, then Phalen but the gates close at night what the hell is that?
Alice: I thought you knew me better than that!!
To the MOON! ALICE
I think I will be waiting for the pp at the stand tonight.
KiWi - are you still thinkin Rice
Yeah it still there
Rice is a good one I think but, everyone can think differently
I don't think so - but the Ice Sulptures are beautiful this year though.
It is not at Rice!
Saw the coke can at Linwood, thought it was fake, Hit the root out at Keller, with shovel or rake,
Was in the same barn, with the horseshoe at fair, Gave up to soon at Newell, when I knew it was there,
Have frozen my nose, and toes, But not in vain or jest, Wish I was there, For that great treasure quest
A good hunter stays on the attack, instead of going on defense (the fence)? That line is still bothering me.
JOE!
A DOUBLE JOE! 6:56!
Do train tracks have names?
The way everyone stretches everything is amazing
Train tracks belong to one railroad or another, Allison. The Soo, The BN, etc.
That's a fake JOE not a real JOE!
Allison -- to back up your last idea, there is a huge snow fence at Linwood Park!!
Hey folks- just got in from Newell- all that can say is that I am getting real frustrated
TV you're gettin a lttle too deep now! Relax, kick
back and clear your mind!
The clues are starting to suck you in deep!
You have to jump out before they eat you alive!
If "the attack" were a name of a train track, clue 6 would make total sense.
Where in the clue does it say anything about what you are talking about alison? I think you are digging yourself into a hole.
It's not at Newell--I just got back from there--too many peoplek, too early....Went at lunch and after work--My theory--the puzzle writer HATES NEWELL PARK! All of the digging, but no glory!
That's what I think also Dave - PP hates Newell!!!
I'm going to tell yall something right now!
Swede Hollow at night would be one cool spot to seek the treasure!
I'm tellin yall that this place is unique!
Yall might be afraid to go down there but I think it's OK now!
There's no other PARK like it in the cities!!
I betcha Highland will end up being the sleeper....everyone loved it at first, but now nobody even mentions it.
Howdeeeee.... does everyone think that the training reference and on the right track means RR (train) tracks? Or is anyone thinking of it in the athletic sense as in physical training and a running track as in track and field??? :)
New Ideas To Quander:
A "Hunter" always on the attack that a person witha good eye can see is the constellation Orion. He is looking West in the night sky. Does that mean the western side of St. Paul? Or near
Remember, there have been many clues relating to the sky (rain, cloudy,...). Inform me of any feedback.
I think w Well-trained eye means a well trained eye and nothing is is intended
Cougar... I thought the well trained eye could also mean a reference to a target range... as in bow and arrow ...etc.... but the trained part might just mean RR trains... or athletic training.... ?? :)
Who is King Boreas' this year?
Does anybody make anything of the repeat of "well" read this well, well trained eye..........
It's a word people use a lot of probably means nothing
Has anyone thougth that Rapscallion could mean a Vulcan? I hadn't thought of that till now. Also right track might mean just that - if there is a right and left track, it could be the right track - like an athletic track or any walking track or path.
Dave are you going to get a paper tonight instead of telling us how many cars are pulling up to PP?
Dave.... as in NeWELL?? Although I don't think that is the park.... but who knows yet? So many still fit the bill... :)
A well trained eye could be something like the lens of a camera too.
What Kiwi just said, made me think o'something.
"Well-trained" has a double mean.
There have been many 2's in this year's clues. Many doubles. Not that that's
a clue in and of ittzself. But it could bee.
Or bicycles on the left, walkers on right, or a pair of RR tracks, or a throwaway phrase.
Heres my take on #6
train tracks all the way... 'well-TRAINed' also jumbles to Triad Newell (Try at Newell)
be on the right track... BN TRACK
Really like the Orion ideal. He's in the southern sky and his arrow points east.
Kinda funny -- here are clues 5 & 6 from 1952....why
can't they still be like this....hahahaha
Clue 5
Boreas' loot is hid near trees
To guard it against Vulcan's thieves.
Underbrush lies here and there;
We hope you find the treasure's lair.
Clue 6
Above the ground but under the snow
The thousand bucks will almost glow.
If, however, the snow should go,
Underbrush or leaves will cover the dough.
I think everyone is reading these clues to well, start thinking of other parts of the clues and maybe it will help.
Newell is to small of a park.
And a tower or two could mean one "tower" and the NUMBER 2.... food for thought.... anyone notice that the snowman on all the clues in the paper is holding a magnifying glass??? Well trained eye??? :o)
Newell is to small of a park.
check out www.startribune.com/fence. they have a great take on the puzzle clues! just what i needed to get things into perspective!
Newell is to small of a park.
Newell can handle this hunt. It's handled it before...and that year the park was swarming with hunters. The snow was piled high..but it was still found late on the last day.
Newell is to small of a park.
Mushie W.... I was think about that tower or two (two being #2)... if i see it then i'll know...
Yes, Nensea, James Lileks rules. For more fun from Mr. Lileks, try www.lileks.com Try the gallery of regrettable food, or his online column, the Daily Bleat. Good stuff.
Gee Cat... we think alike! =^..^= meow! :-)
A tower or two has no guarentee of anything it doesn't say you will see a tower or to or that you can see a tower or two it's all that you should but, maybe you won't
that was sooooo funny downtown. sound par for the course too.
There was also alot of vandalism done to the park, the PP was pissed and so were the people who lived by the park.
Sorry Kiwi... I don't agree.... I truly believe the tower will be in sight... for sure!! :)
There was also alot of vandalism done to the park, the PP was pissed and so were the people who lived by the park.
There was also vandalism there a couple years ago that had nothing to do with the hunt.
And I didn't see vandalism going on when we were out there...and that was lots and lots of hours.
Vandalism where?
Here's an idea everyone get drunk and high and then start talking about the clues.
I think you already are KIWI
Kiwi you are a looser!
Looking back at the clues, each and every one has a "two" in it.
Twice named the park.
Two races
Two towers
Two places to gain relief from the rain - that serve cooking
Two words with one antonym
Two tracks
No but, It might help for the people with ine track minds atleast I am open to everything except the way stretched crap
#3 is saying you will see the tower or Two ONLY if you look in KIng Boreas' direction... (either North or to St. Paul)...
When I say I 'should' be somewhere by 8 that means maybe not but most likely i will... seeing the towers to the north SHOULD guide you to the prize, but maybe not.... point being is that the Tower or Two WILL BE VISIBLE
Downtown Dave what category is it under? At the trib's page.
Has anybody considered the "eye" in the "well trained " clue could refer to the letter "i"?
so what are you saying Green?
Actually, the easiest way to prevent vanadlism (tip from my neighborhood watch days) is to have a steady supply of people!
This clue is from 3 years ago @como.....note their use of the word "track".
It is intended to refer you towards railroad tracks...something to think about.
Clue 2
Your cure for displeasure could be this treasure
As you track north through the ice and snow.
You might consider a scarf for good measure;
It will help tell you in which direction to go.
This clue gets you looking in the northern portion of the city as well as
north of the railroad tracks near Bandana Square; the scarf may lead you to
think of Bandana Square, but it's also a direct reference to the red scarf the
medallion was wrapped in.
well, heres a thought if it really has said twice in it evrytime and that's what they want you to figure out maybe it is cherokee park since it has been hidden there twice since 1990
Green - I think you were doubling things up last year...or was it the year before too!
Has anyone picked up on the clue within the clues yet?
I agree Cat... surely visible!! And I believe they will be to the north.... good picking that out green! Maybe we should all put on our tutu's and go dig? LOL!! :)
troy and kitty, it's called the back fence
Ter, that was '98... I doubled EVERTHANG!
This, however, is not based on math, but reading the clues.
Maybe all the "two's" will be a reference somehow to the year 2000??
clue #'s 5 and 6 BEG us to read into them for hidden words... and i think ive found them... everyone agrees with 'Fair' from #5 i think...
and i just posted the --- be on the right track = BN 'the right track' (runs flush against newell park) and the 'well-TRAINed'=Triad Newel (try at newell) ideas... soemone please either SHOOT THEM DOWN OR AGREE!!!... i feel like triad newell is akin to chair-o-key...
well, I still think rice is a possibility
Maybe there are 2 medallions
And, Ter, don't furget 98's "line o'double division" that left me totally
clueless and in the dark! :>
Troy and Kitty-- in startrib his column is www.startribune.com/fence
www.lileks.com is a huge web site that Mr. Lileks does on his own with no connection with Star Trib. It has no advertising, and is done for his own amusement. And for mine, and whoevers. Try the items under "The institute for cheer"--especially the gallery of regrettable food. I think he uses web site as a test market for his writings..... if you want more info, I can e-mail it to you, since I am sure medallion people will tire of this...

well, I still think rice is a possibility
Instead of looking north or towards St. Paul, who is the person that was named King Boreas' this year? Who does he work for or what company does he own and where is it located?
Well maybe they are begging for you to do this only because it will throw you off the track
Local now I think you are on to something
I read an article in the paper that stated that King Boreas was King of the Winds, not a specific wind. He assigned his four brothers to the four winds. How does this fit in with the clues? I thought he was King of the North Wind until I read the legend in the paper.
Thanks, DDave. I found it. Anyone out there like Orion the hunter deal?
It worries me when you start talking numbers, Green.
I like the BN track thing. I'll agree with that...at least until the next clue either shoots the whole thing down or we end up being at the right park.
Boreas it self means north
Therese -- in mythology, king B is considered "the north wind"
but Kiwi... its far from a consensus on my ideas... which could be good or bad for me i guess... but they usually try to throw people of without making them read into clues AT ALL... such as hunting + attack = BATTLE creek
Kiwi, please explain how Boreas' means north?
I'm not surprised, Terry. It SHOULD. Knowing you know how bad I am with
them...
Anybuddy want me to bring 24 POUNDS o'potatoe salad to *this* Re-Hash
Bash????
Or should I bring a ham I've baked 16 hours?????
that is what someone had said way earlier according to something who knows
Kiwi, please explain how Boreas' means north?
If boreas or king boreas is king of all winds then which park is in the middle of north south east and west?
I just did a minute or so ago
KIWI... the 'central' park wouldnt be LOOKING in king boreas' direction... im just caught if it means look to st paul or north or Both
has everyone ruled out Highland??
10/4 on St Paul Kiwi.
went to the website of lilek where on the page are the clues explained i see no mention of clues at all.
If king boreas's direction is south north east and west the park in the middle you could look north south east and west
or be in the direct middle of all of these
"boreas" is the greek god of the north wind, as per merriam dictionary
werentany try today's column
It's just a thought don't get all bent.
thanks troy & kitty... going to check it out :)
... i can look south east north and west from my rooftop... and any other outdoor non 'forest' place on earth
Too many secrets -- have you ever seen the movie "sneakers"?
Hey Dogg what do you think so far for this new clue?
Hi all,
I agree that Boreas means north...but are they saying look north to see a tower or two, or look in the north for the park?
rofl@ lileks column... so true
just tryin to keep people on the same TRACK kiwi, no offense, but it says direction (singular)... im a word freak, writer and crossword addict, hence my love of the hunt...
kiwi -
am with you - keep it simple and be patient. if you chew up these same clues for long enough, you could find a reason the med is in san diego....
Well, maybe it's not good for us all to be on the same track. People think differently and its only human but, some times its for the good
Well Kiwi -- I think people are definately overanalyzing it....and that's OK, that's the fun of this whole thing. But there are soooo many things it could mean. A while back, I explained a little animal theory...kinda far fetched, but did you see it?
Lileks clue #1--You'll have no trouble finding the hiding place! It's made of atoms and occupies space! On another note, if Boreas does not refer to North, it means nothing. Saying St. Paul=Boreas is like saying South from the North Pole.....Might refer to previous ice castles, might not.
I like your thinking Too many secrets
don't care what you all say, kiwi's got a great e-mail address
ok now i just wanna be post #6969
I like your thinking Too many secrets
ok now i just wanna be post #6969

Boreas', look to the center? What do you all think?
ha ha I am #6969 and it fits my nickname of aol kiwi006969
Didn't I just say that a second ago or am I just retarded
fitting that you foiled my plan kiwi ;-)
Sorry
people sure have been hot for newell, it's been combed pretty "well"
Newell is out of the question
where does King Boreas set up shop?
I brought up the confusion on Boreas because of the recent publication of the Winter Carnival fable. Apparently the writer of the local fable didn't know his mythology. See the link to the fable in the recent stories at the Winter Carnival main page here at pp.com
I was wondering how publishing the clue with Boreas in it and the fable might tie in.
where is home for the winter ?
suppose i'll just stick with my viking statue...
where is his home ( king boreas) for the winter according to the myth or what ever
Kiwi, some like Phoenix, some like Ft. Lauderdale.
Why?
Hey, you seekers, you don't have to run to the newstand.
check out www.pioneerplanet.com
It's the PP web page, and it states that the next clue can be clicked on at 12:01 am, Saturday
Good Hunting
Boreas's home according to legend is the Ice Castle, isn't it?? I'm pretty sure.
someone posted the whole king b story a day or two ago
agree with you cosmo, well-trained should be well trained, not well-trained its obviously an anagram :)
Where is the castle located?
how can "boreas' direction" not mean north? That is the clue that needs the least analyzing...
I could have swore it said something about Boreas being from Olympus. Oh well, no one liked that theory last nite tho. Has the mediallion EVER been in the same park 2 yrs in a row? I gotta know.
hehehe green--after all, they tend to be older....
maybe they are talking about where king boreas is at or whatever in that clue
Never been closer than 6 years apart Annette.
maybe that's were new comes in Alison
if you go to pp you can get it at 11:30 tho :)
dont forget that :)
Mizzed you 2day, DDave. Hope you're off work for the weekend and will bee
here. You are 2 funny!
kiwi!
Thanks Allison - I guess I will have to go thru the archives in future years to get a head start to rule out certain parks. Which parks would be ruled out - for being in the past 5 yrs?
Yes Dave
Never 2 years in a row. Good idea , but Conway? I might buy Highland, Como, Phalen etc.
7 k joe
heh hi
Como conway,cherokee,harriet,battle creek
hi
Okay let's think here for a sec if they were going to do this different this year and maybe put it in conway again what clues does that park fit in with again? Ace hardware
Newell, Phalen :) i like cosmo well-trained --> tri-ad-newell --> they've done that before and you cant discount newell yet, cause alot of stuff still fits there, just keep your mind open , the year 2000 they finally fool all the doubters and put it back at newell, lmao
yes green--I'm off work for weekend--plan on hunting bright and early in morning, location dependant on clue.....
Kiwi is right Annette.
The only reason for that thought is everyone is noticeing it not being in the same park within 6 years
So maybe they will put it in conway again to really throw everyone
"...and it could make you an Ace Hardware Store."
I think not.
In last year's clues they gave out one of the street names in # 6. Do you think they've given one out yet this year? I know a lot of people who favor Newell think that "serve" refers to butler, as in pierce butler, and that "fair"view is the other street, but to me, fair isn't the opposite of cloudy. I know it's the opposite of foul, but isn't the clue suggesting that we take the opposites of both cloudy and foul? Help please...
In clue #5 the opposite of cloudy could mean clear, Clear St. and the opposite of foul is fair, looked up fair in thesaurus and got prosperity. Is there a Prosperity park on Clear St.?
Welcome bock, Sister!
Clear Avenue.
It has not been in the north west part of St Paul for a while. Langford I believe. Your thoughts?
yes and then it would be fair ground
also like opposite of extract in clue # 5 referring to pierce (butler) runs right along newell park :)
Fair is the opposite of cloudy. You can have cloudy skies or fair skies.
Yeah, I thought of Clear Ave. but it doesn't tie in with Newell (darn!)
Letta - yes, Clear runs through Prosperity rec center.
I still think that whole clue means nothing what so ever and everyone os looking to deep into this.
once you get 'fair' out of cloudy and foul stop right there... dont pull something else from 'fair'...
fair = fair = fair = fair
well-trained also anagrams into -in red wallet-
everyones free to argue that cloudy and foul mean something else tho... just havent heard anything as solid yet
You are thinking to deeply now Troy and Kitty
red wallet... too big and too bright... but i OWN a red wallet as a matter of fact...!!!
Drove by prosperity park yesterday, didn't seem to promising
10/4 Cos Cat!
Okay, time for a poll...
Who still thinks Newell?
Anyone for Battle Creek?
How about Phalen?
Well, we know it is not at the capital correct/
Maybe it is describing what it can see and smell being that the person is acting like the medallion and writting the clues
As with "a row of trees" that took you farther, with 'Fair'VIEW, the clue
would also have to contain something about a "view." To complete the name.
And it doesn't.
Besides, the antonym for both words doesn't fit.
AM 70% towards NEWELL PARK going by clue 5, and 6
N, BC and why P?
Phalen is my first choice, Newell is second.
From what I've read, I think it is at a park near a golf course on a baseball or softball field. Maybe even hidden near a foul pole.
The way I look at cloudy and foul is this. Cloudy and foul weather would be rainy or snowy. The opposite of that is fair! Though FAIRview borders Newell, the FAIR grounds is within sight of that park.
I agree with you outta my mind and believe that the first clue says not to go near the club house where golfers gather and that if you where to find the medallion there on the golf course you might cause a rebellion. But, again just a thought
I don't think Phalen either at this point; I think #1 is saying that the park does not have a golf course, which Phalen does. I would say that right now Newell is the favorite.
Otay. Bedtime for this Bozo. Gotta toddle.
Will catch those o'you here later!
Good luck, good noodling, and good digging!
How often have we heard weathermen use the term fair? Lots.
From what I've read, I think it is at a park near a golf course on a baseball or softball field. Maybe even hidden near a foul pole.
Well, darn it, I like Conway - even tho it was there last year: opposites attract = one side of the park is named for a woman (Ruth St.), the opposite "Howard", and "Read this well" (as in a book - there is a Library there), and if someone still thinks ace has something to do w/ tennis - it is a stretch, but Wilson Ave borders teh park as well (the brand Wilson)
Kiwi--if you put "everyone is over stretching the clues" in you tag line--you could save yourself a lot of typing!!!!!
because last years clue directly told you not in or on a golf course what so ever and this years clue is dancing around it all
Very creative Annette, but I just don't think it would be in Conway AGAIN.
has it ever been in the same park back to back?
Kiwi, you're finally getting astute!
:>
DDave, you crack me up.
NYETALL!!!
no never and that's where new fits in
It never has been at the same park back to back...but then again, why not?
well-trained also jumbles into ... eternal wild... fits the context of the clue... click this link http://www.ssynth.co.uk/~gay/anagram.html to try more variations... keep it at a 2 word count, plain english dictionary, and turn I and A off...
well, thanks green if that's a compliment
holy cow what a clue in #5, opposite of cloudy and foul = fair
and opposite of extract = pierce
fair(view) and pierce(butler) intersect at the corner of newell park
then throw in the anagram from clue 6 well-trained (which shouldnt be spelled that way) ----> tri-ad-newell
I DONT THINK THIS IS A STRETCH , Not by any means! :)
I am liking the big parks cause of the ole millennium thing that people think happened this year, they wanna make it a large scale event in a large park
Terry, I have wondered that myself. The two best reasons I can think of are these: 1. These must be tough for puzzle writer to write. Given that the puzzle writer duty may overlap years, ie same puzzle writer for multiple consecutive years, it would be tough to come up with ambiguous clues for the same park two years in a row. 2. PP would like to avoid putting stress on neighborhoods two years in a row. In a small park like Newell, that is mostly in a residential area, the pressure of being "the" spot two years in a row might result in bad feelings toward PP, which is first and formemost, a business.
how about it being near a psychic ward or mental hospital because in the first clue it talks about viking depression
the way I look at that is the opposite of extract: meaning to dig up woould be to bbury it.
vikings depression means nothing except that everyones dissapointed in them for not making it this year
no stretch Dave.. but extract's opposite is bury or something of that nature... pierce is close to bury but it seems like more of a slicing action then a burying action... could be right tho... im with newell regardless... i think 'attack' could be Pierce since the BN Tracks run next to it... all bundled in the same clue...
Is it a possible hiding place for the medallion to still be in the sate fair grounds, and can you see the light poles from municipal stadium from newell park(a tower or two)?
and the new obsession would be the hunt for the medallion
Light poles from Midway Stadium are clearly visible.
Is it a possible hiding place for the medallion to still be in the sate fair grounds, and can you see the light poles from municipal stadium from newell park(a tower or two)?
Kiwi, they always bury it, they don't just leave it laying on the snow.
The state fair grounds is not a park.
Can someone please tell me where Kellog Park is? Thank you in advance!
Kellogg Park is on Kellogg between Wabasha and Robert along the river.
you can see the stadium from newell, but oof hand all i remember seeing for towers is kstp's broadcast tower, i dont remember any others except for the fire tower, next to the stadium, if that counts i dunno
TJH Kellogg Park is a narrow strip of grass and trees on the south side of Kellogg Blvd between the Wabasha and Robert Street bridges. All of the trees have lights, as well as a giant, lighted salvation army kettle. there is a fountain, and paths made of pavers. Overlooks river, shepard road, harriet island, and two sets of train tracks....
Not that it could be seen at night...but the water tower in the fair grounds and the space needle can be seen.
Downtown Dave, i agree with ya about your second idea (repeat digging at newell) but they cant control where our twisted munds lead us! Some people dig at Phalen every year regardless... same goes for other larger parks...
There are currently no diggers in Kellogg park.
Is it a possible hiding place for the medallion to still be in the sate fair grounds, and can you see the light poles from municipal stadium from newell park(a tower or two)?
opposites attract - could mean 2 sides of the river and/or pieces of land connecting - like at Rasberry "Navy Island" and attack could mean Navy as well. Nothing else fits tho.
da kid...instead of hitting refresh or reload, hit the blue number next to your name. That will prevent the echo you're creating here.
Thank you, Terry!
the things I see that say golf course: golfers cavort (clue 1) ace (clue 2) things that could be important that I haven't heard about: two towers in the north (clue 3) shelter or place to gain relief from rain (clue 4) well (clue 4) cooking (clue 4) opposites attract (clue 5) cloudy and foul (clue 5) extract (clue 5) good hunter (clue 6) track (clue 6)
Right cosmo--but a few diggers on a hunch, does not equal the number that you would get after a clue like last years not published #12 "in the recreation area known as Conway" even clue 11 turned park into mayhem--Phalen, Highland, etc. can handle traffic of random seekers--
And someone mentioned earlier, forget when, that the Space Needle is ACTUALLY the Space Tower, according to a sign right on it... maybe thats where the 'or' in tower or two comes in...???
The State Fair grounds are offically in Falcon Heights, aren't they? That would rule them out. Also, the golf clue in the 1st clue is always there each year to keep people from destroying the golf courses. The year the medallion was at Highland recently had the golf clue, even though Highland has a golf course. So, the park could have a golf course, but stay off of it if it does!!!
The state fair grounds north to Hoyt Ave are in St. Paul. Hoyt is the divider there.
Any streets in St. Paul named after famous chefs?
I think it could be in a park that has a golf course, but not "where the golfer's cavort" - whether that just means the golf clubhouse and or of course it means not on the course itself. But I am not ruling out a park w/ a golf course.
Not that I know of.
