Fourth Annual (GASP! Has it been THAT long ALREADY?!) Pre-Dig Gig, Sat, Jan 19, 2002 - McGoverns! BE THERE!!!

I cancelled my subscription to The 'Press as they didn't deliver my Monday paper. They SWORE I'd have two today - Monday's and todays - at 6:30 a.m.

Guess what? Only got today's. So, cancelled.

How am I supposed to cut out the clues if they don't deliver the paper?

So, picking paper up on way to work each day.

Doin' a little research on the coolor crew site's history. Take a look at clue 3 in 1995, when it was in Battle Creek:

'Tis no easy measure to secure the treasure But here's a clue to help you get by. To end your hunt with great pleasure, Look for water in the earth and sky. (The water clues refer to a nearby pond and two visible water towers.)

Two visible towers, eh?

The last time it was in Highland, they more or less announced it in the fifth clue with the hint "seek elevated terrain". If they don't do something similar tomorrow or the following night, its not there. (Como was named in the 4th clue a few years back).

Duff - 01:22am Jan 26, 2000 CST (#1951 of 28288) Mark Reply

Exactly, if they don't name the park tomorrow night its time to narrow it down to the smaller parks

Treasure Huntin' Fool - 01:22am Jan 26, 2000 CST (#1952 of 28288) Mark Reply

That makes sense, Allison, especially since both Como and Highland are huge.

Highland doesn't look that big when you remove the golf course, but go out there with a shovel and you'll feel overwhelmed very quickly.

Duff - not tired of hunting, tired of walking over it year after year.

As much as I really think they'd put it in a big park this year due to the increase in cash, I have to agree that the park should be named soon else it'll be a small one.

Two tiny thumbs up for the medallion hunt!

the reason people pull north out of boreas is because the actual root of the word itself means north (think of aurora borealis aka northern lights).

I can agree with that, my sister had the 459 thing figured out last year and I refused to admit that they would tell us exactly where it was like that, I am still used to the old clues, very vague as to location in the park

Schlettdog - 01:30am Jan 26, 2000 CST (#1966 of 28288) Mark Reply

I feel that the only way it could be at a small park now is if we misinterpreted tonight's clue. Picnic shelters are really only in the larger parks.

Treasure Huntin' Fool - 01:30am Jan 26, 2000 CST (#1967 of 28288) Mark Reply

That's a very good point, S-dog.

the 459 bit last year was pretty unique. Several people may have thought of it, but how many house addresses have a 4,5 and 9? Those also could have been on a billboard, or anything else. Once you SAW 459 Ruth, especially after the baseball reference, only then it became abuntantly clear.

Duff - 01:33am Jan 26, 2000 CST (#1971 of 28288) Mark Reply

Well if it is at a larger park then we should at least get a street name on clue #5, I have to get some rest as well, big weekend coming up

reddog_1 - 01:34am Jan 26, 2000 CST (#1972 of 28288) Mark Reply

the clue doesn't say picnic shelters--1985 in kellogg, the clues spoke of thunder (rain) and seeking shelter nearby--the meaning of the clue refered to the raddison hotel

Treasure Huntin' Fool - 01:36am Jan 26, 2000 CST (#1973 of 28288) Mark Reply

"relief from the rain" and "get you cooking" suggest a picnic shelter with a grill.

Allison said that the Treasure Hunter's Guide only lists Cherokee, Como, Crosby, Hidden Falls, Highland, Mounds, Newell and Phalen. We've since only been able to add Battle Creek and Harriet Island. Harriet Island is out, due to construction. I have a bad feeling about HIdden and Crosby, due to limited viewing capabilities of towers to the North, because of the steep embankment.

There is usually one good idea in each clue, with other allusions that make sense only after the hunt.

Here's my ideas on the clues without naming parks... I think thats what kills people is getting a park in mind and MAKING all the clues fit it... FIRST figure out the clues and then find the park that fits... It's been said before but I had to say it again...

#1 Obviously just a St. Paul park and STAY OFF the golf courses... (although Vikings depression could = Swede Hollow) Oops there I go naming parks already...

#2 Set your own pace... could make you an ace (winner)... into the chase... My feeling is either a Marathon (the St. Paul Marathon) or walking/jogging paths (although those aren't races) if Marathon then we need to figure out the Start/Finish of it and possibly the entire route

#3 I dont think 'tower or two' means TWO TOWERS... i think it means ONE tower and the number TWO, all in view to the North of the park/ hiding spot/ area (North from the King Boreas reference. or towards St. Paul if it's referring to that) i think they split 'tower or two' with "or" because they are far enough apart to not be grouped but also both can narrow the searching field...

#4 I feel like there's something hidden in this one, clueless to it as of now... SWRA came up (South West Regional Area)... other than that I see what everyone else does... Grilling facilities and Picnic SHELTERS

Who's the idiot in charge of updating the Medallion Hunt Website?

For clue No. 5 Click here? I think we're on No. 4 now, right?

In the previous clues section there are only two clues listed and there should be three.

It's nice to see that the PP is on top of things. :/

King Boreas is appearing at Como this year right? I doubt that it's Swede Hollow cause the nieghborhood is too scary for the tame types that probably planted the Medallion. Parking is bad and the chances of someones car getting broke into there is good.

At Como there is a golf course, snow towers, picnic shelters and cooking facilities.

I'm disappointed I didn't get to see Steve. I talked to him on the phone and gave him the good news that the prize money was back again at $10,000. He's a nice guy and I sure do appreciate my signed copy of his book as well.

I just discussed the clues with a fellow co-worker. The thought from him was it's either at Highland or Newell. At Newell, you'd have to be facing St. Paul, so the State Fairgrounds would be at your back and you wouldn't be able to see the towers. His reason why Newell is that the first clue said change your obsession (from football) to baseball (Saints). However, no golf course but Como. I'm not sure how close the Como golf course is - probably not close I didn't see it when I was at Newell last year looking. Now, Highland has shelters, kitchen, different types of golf, etc. and TOWERS. The better feeling of the two is Highland; however, I'm not ruling out any park quite yet.

Hello fellow Medallion Freaks! Don't they (the news) always go to Como or Highland to do the reports on the hunt? It always throws me. So, I was out at the rapscallion named Phalen's park last night to check out the several radio towers in northern view and I found that the park was closed. Is night hunting discouraged or do people go anyway? Also, I was wondering if anyone knows the least amount of clues the Med has been found in? Just wondering.

Treasure Digger - 09:09am Jan 26, 2000 CST (#2038 of 28288) Mark Reply

The least amount of clues is 0. It was found by accident before the hunt started by two love birds. It was taped to the underside of a bench.

My first instinct is that the med is in a BIG park this year with the award again at $10K.

But last year they surprised us with Conway. I'm not sure that they won't do something similar again. So far, most all of the larger parks have at least a couple of things going for them. Tonight's clue (hopefully) should have it narrowed down to only a few.

And I hope for my sanity the %$#%^$# clue actually gets posted on the WC ON TIME!!

There is a nice biking path, there, and bbqs, of course the pavillion. It was only 4 years ago that it was hidden there.

I like the w-a-r-s anagram/Battle Creek theory, too. But I don't suspect it would be there again so soon either. Also, it was just on the East Side last year, not likely to be so close to last year's spot. If they *were* to do an East side park this year, my guess would be Phalen.

Don't believe there is any shelter or grills, but there is a bike trail (set your own pace). It is too small to even be ON most maps - the closest major park would probably be Mounds.

It seems WAY too obvious to put the name of the park in the 1st clue: Vikings = Swede Depression = Hollow

The Mounds are completely fenced off with wrought Iron Fences.

I was there an hour ago and it looks real promising from the vantage point of Earl and Mounds.

MacGrove Man, methinks I'd write off Como. Although I only drove up and down Lexington, the closest thing to two towers I could see from the road were the space needle, and what appeared to be a cone-topped water tower in the west, and a high-rise to the south-southeast. I most definitely could not see DT from my vantage points. Then again, I also really didn't get into the park so take this with a grain of salt.

Now I thought about Burial Mounds and there's the Met Airport Commiss Beacon Tower, the Holman airfield & tennis court-"ace". Picnic areas??

Tower assessment and complete grill ransack. We'll see. Hopefully tomorrow's clue will be park-related. What are your thoughts on the swede hollow thing?

"No university class will ever teach you what LSD can." -- an anonymous writer to the mn daily's network column.

Lillian today's clue pretty much did it for me and Swede Hollow. From my knowledge of the park, there are no cooking areas to it. That and the park proper is really only the depression between Payne Ave, and what ever is to the east of the park, and between Minnehaha Ave and E 7th St. South of 7th at Payne is where the trail comes out, and there are no picnic/rain protection areas there, though there are a pair of cell towers plainly visible, as well as the brewery and a church to the NE. Of course "Vikings depression" fits "Swede Hollow" perfectly (contrary to a post last night, the Vikings were not just a Norwegian phenomenon, but they came from all of Scandinavia, including Sweden), though one must wonder what the alternate clue would have been had the Vikings beat the Rams.

Phalen is good- I was ou t there last night. There are radio towers to the north in view, and did you know Phalen committed the first murder in Minnesota- he then fled to the west. I think that would make him a rapscallion, don't you?

I kinda like the Mounds idea...I do believe some on here are taking the clues too literally and really should be trying to decipher them more. Not that Im the expert by any means, but I think two towers needs to be disected, as well a cooking, etc. They like to try and make us work at the clues... How about you?

The tennis courts are essentially on school property...though it is public I don't think they would run the risk of mixing the hunters with the school aged kids. Wouldn't be PC.

Outdoor phy-ed classes go on through the winter plus kids park on Snelling = a bad mix.

A tower or two...there are three.

From the main park, especially near the picnic shelters you cannot see the towers at all.

And you are not necessarily looking in Boreas' direction!

I live in the area and scoped it out today. Not very likely.

What do you like about Hidden Falls?

Lillian, I *think* before he left town, Phalen served five or eight months for the murder at, I believe, Fort Snelling. Then he disappeared and his cabin was moved into and his claim jumped.

Interesting thought, Lillian. If the cluewriters were thinking this, then the "Don't be a rapscallion" could mean don't go west, which would cross off Highland and Como (or any other park in the western part of the city).
