Has anyone given thought to smaller parks (i know newell is small), but i looked through past clues for various parks and it follows a pattern of the bigger the park the earlier they give you the name of the park (more digging area) Como -- 4th clue, Highland -- 5th clue.

Newell is out of the question.....is HP? I've searched both Wed. and Thurs. nights. It seems as if it might be there...but there is so much ground to cover. Has anyone thought of the disc golf course idea? "Non-traditional..." Disc golf is non-traditional.

What about the pided piper of hamelin. This could point toward Hamelin which runs along HP or the university which is near Newell.

I was at HP two days ago and the disc-golf area is torn to shreds, especially around the "hole" for four and "tee" for five.

My crew thought that too, eitsaeb (about DISCerning)! There is still a lot of ground that is untouched at HP, though. Yeah people have dug out around a lot of the disc golf holes...but other areas go untouched! People will dig out three posts on a sign and not touch the fourth one. Why???

What I'm trying to say is that a person will take the time to dig out around the posts of a sign, but they only dig around three of the four posts or something stupid like that.

Boreas - maybe the famous name isn't that of a person?? Just a thought.
"many a tome (large book)", are they referring to many different books or many of the same book?
When I think of large book - I immediately think of the bible. But I don't think that's it. Maybe history books?
Ford is a famous name - what large books could this be found in?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
lildebi - 08:32am Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7039 of 22136)
usually you are really excited when you start on the first sign, then the second you start to lose hope and go on to the third, by the fourth sign (or whatever) you feel so stupid and there have been so many people driving by and laughing that you just quit....

Why not consider a small park? They haven't hidden it in small park in nearly (i think) 8 years. Parks that fit the clues so far could be-- Martin Luther King park, Langford park, Nathan Hale triange, Dayton's Bluff, and yes there is even a Webster.

LOOK!!! it's gotta be a large park! $10,000.00 is gonna get a gazillion amateur treasure hunters out there. the man doesn't want someone finding the medallion early in the hunt, so he's gonna hide it where it will take hundreds of diggers several hours to find it after almost all the clues have been revealed. Our only job right now is to figure out WHAT PARK IT IS IN!!! Come on people! i'm dying here - throw me a bone for pete's sake.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yahtzee - 08:56am Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7046 of 22136)

Yahtzee - 09:01am Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7051 of 22136)
It could be the opposite though Boreas. For $10,000 they could hide it in a small park, make the clues ridicously(sp) hard, thinking that if someone does figure it out they deserve the $10,000. It is rare that an ametuer hunter just stumbles upon the medallion because they are out digging in a park that 100's of others are in. I think this year they are "bucking" the system. The true hunters are lulled into the belief that it is in a big park because that is what they are used to.

Boreas - we were thinking Como a few clues ago and everyone said no. I still think its a possibility. However, I'm still leaning towards HP. It's still a wild goose chase. Last year at this time, people were still divided between Cherokee and Mounds.

Yahtzee- that's true, but can they risk it....You know, with the media hype and all, the hunt has to live up to it's name. If they are making the clues ridiculously hard and it's in a small park, later on when they almost have to pinpoint it for us, ther will be a thousand people in fistacuffs over the medallion!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gail Schiff - 09:05am Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7056 of 22136)
I love the hunt for the Medallion. It has been a family tradition to figure out the clues, put on the boots, grab the shovel and go digging. Until today we believed it to be at Indina Mounds Park. Todays clue has changed our minds. Now we are looking for the statue or the marker of a famous individual. The first clue refers to St. Paul so we ruled out parks that are located in Ramsey County but not in the City of St. Paul.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris Maki - 09:08am Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7057 of 22136)
Has Battle Creek been ruled out yet? They just re-opend the ski jump (flying downhill), there's a school nearby (learning), and the famous name from a tome could be Longfellow, a very nearby street. These clues can be made to fit almost any park, though.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chris - you are right. The clues CAN be made to fit almost any park. It's still a wild goose chase. Haven't even gone out and looked anywhere yet - saving my energy!! I'll be the first woman whose 8-1/2 months pregnant to find the medallion!

Dave Chanhassen - 09:11am Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7060 of 22136)
You guys, are not reading INTO the clues. Think outside the box. I have a 99% guess on where the medallion is, so when and if its found this weekend. I will decipher the clues. Cause otherwise I need to practice what I preach.
My clues to you are - Think History Think Literature Think Fast
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yahtzee - 09:12am Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7061 of 22136)
Boreas -- Very good point. I do think this is going to go to the final clue and there had better be enough room for half of St.Paul including the media.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sister Sister - 09:12am Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7062 of 22136)
Dave - I agree. I think today's clue fits with yesterday's "learning" clue. Therefore the name has to do with a school book - history, literature, whatever.
Literature - Hamline?

Yahtzee - 09:16am Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7069 of 22136)
Remeber when it was at Harriet Island? One of the clues pointed to the name of the man who designed Harriet Island, but to figure it out you had to know your history of St.Paul. This could be the same. The famous name in a tome might not be a Worldly famous person, but perhaps someone famous to St.Paul.

Annie - I think you are addressing me. The reason I asked was because the whole Newell Park thing has been discussed since the very beginning. Don't know if anyone is still leaning towards there or not. Heard the park is all dug up though.

I think they mean icon as something or someone that is important or familiar to many people. The clue states to go AWAY from such a thing. i.e. be willing to become an iconoclast.
I am thinking of the Ham's Mansion that burned down so many years ago. Which rules out Swede Hollow. 1 of my two choices.

Morning, Still haven't come to my 100% pure decison as to the park. My only addition to this chat is that I think it may be in a CD case or similiar. Clue 4's play on words, new-well, and "blast" from the past and clue 5's "DISCerning" lead me to this. A "blast from the past" as in music (maybe) ,but in 1984 the medallion was at Newell park and found taped to a 45 record. Maybe they are refering us to that. Iconoclast in thesarsus lists "critic" , on a shot in the dark PP's music critics are Fleming and Walsh. But only walsh is a street in St. Paul, 2 blocks off of Phalen. So the critic part is out for me. But I think it may be secured to a CD, like in '84 at Newell.

Hi folks, I am going to try this again. I want to get in on the clue discussion. As I am clueless. I believed it to be in Indian Mound Park near a historical marker. There are several, Indian Mound Park runs right into Battle Creek Park. It does not have a rec center like the city playgrounds, however it has all the other amenities like play equipment, picnic shelters, hills to slid on. The history of the Hopewell Indians is barried in the mounds. Some of the mounds are bigger than others and so they are easy to see. Some are small and you have to look for them. (Just a note, the mounds are visiable and are fenced off, don't mess with them. Just know their reference and history.) Anyway like it is with each new clue. I'll start over again. I do believe it is in the City of St.Paul and not in a park that is located in Ramsey County but outside of St. Paul.

I agree with Yantzee I believe the numbers are referring to an address and the 9 and 5 are visiable, you need to look for the four. It could be 495,549, 954 any combination. I don't believe it referrs to anythink else other than you use the numbers to keep score.

YOU ARE ALL SO LUCKY TO BE HERE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!
am gonna tell you what park the medallion is in, and give you reasons why it is there!
STATE CAPITOL MALL-
clue 1- st. paul public ground, a park, NO GOLF COURSE ( if you go to a park where there is a golf course you are wasting your time)
clue 2- refers to activities at COMO, but if you look there your chances of winning are nil (no chance).
clue 3- somehow must be related to the surrounding buildings?
clue 4- studying the past : MN HISTORICAL SOCIETY(need I say more). there are also several war memorials which may also refer to studying the past. value as well in the new + iconoclast = JESSE VENTURA.
clue 5- refers to all the activity that takes place at the capitol.
clue 6- man of fame found in many tomes( school books, encyclopedias, etc.) there are memorials to COLUMBUS, LIEL ERICKSON, CHARLES LINDBERG, and other state and national leaders all over the place - any one of which this clue refers to.

Clue 1 - suggests (with Clue 3) that it is near a golf course.
Clue 2 - suggests A Large Hill - not necessarily for sliding - but to stay away from such areas.
Clue 3 - suggests Numbered landmarks near by - And a place of much excitement
Clue 4 - Suggests a place with a lot of History that is connected with the now ( could be an abstract connection) A blase and iconoclast suggest a place that was moved or destroyed)
Clue 5 - Suggests a place of education or near such a place
Clue 6 - Suggests a place connected to fame as well as a literary figure there is also a hint of a "game".
My thoughts only of course

Hello Ambassador, How RU my Boyyyy? Lots of people noodling on wheels last night. If the puck is in a big park they should have given it away by now. If it is in a small park we should know by the big thaw. Anyone have an estimate of how many more searchers there are this year as compared to previous years? I imagine that MOM put it somewhere to minimize damage (i.e. a parking lot).

I agree! The NewAll clue was to blatent and soon. They will let us narrow to a handful, if not the park, by the end of the weekend. I have a feeling it will be a huge park, with seven clues pinpointing the the mendalion in the park.

I agree with Rojo here... Usually, if it is in a bigger park, we know by now... 1997 - Como Park we knew by the 4th clue... 1995 - Battle Creek - we knew by the 5th clue... 1994 - Highland Park - we knew by the 5th clue... (although I should hope they would make it a bit harder this year with all the $$ involved!!!) Right now, by gut keeps telling me a smaller, less well-known park....

Chris It might mean though you are in the right area. Don't think too specifically. A lesson learned from reading well+new = Newell
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
christopher campbell - 12:01pm Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7305 of 22136)
But the wouldn't put it at Newell, it is too small, and too early in the "game", plus, there is so much money on the line, they wouldn't put it at a small park, and it needs to be large to accomodate all the crazy hunters

Hi- I never have shared, but...I think that a small park that has not been mentioned works in a real interesting way- but you will have to look up stuff in an encyclopedia- KEllogg is crucial and you need to know the correct Kellogg- they are indeed playing a game with 2 very famous historical people with the last name Kellogg- it is NOT Battle Creek- which is connected to one of the Kelloggs. (cereal- Battle Creek, Michigan) 2 real famous Kelloggs and one linked to Minnesota of historical international fame for a huge famous treaty he wrote which is in every American History book and encyclopedia with his name on it! Iconclaust fits in too!-which impacts many clues. Also this park has a historical Library in sight for learning on Kellogg and streets 4 and 5 on each side which equal nine and planes fly overhead heading downtown and a new bridge named after a historical warrior (Wabasha) is nearby, and the last bridge had been built a century ago (1900) and it had been a 9 span bridge and I believe it was BLASTED down. Also, it is the 4th time this bridge has been built. I am a librarian, so I probably am getting too deep, but knowing the correct (Minnesota) KEllogg is important! I think they are putting it in this small very historical park and won't be very specific about it being there to the end to have us digging up all these large parks that kinda fit. I think there are statutes and monuments there also of historical importance to St. PAul as well that may fit, I have to go check the scene out.. Well, that is all I have to say... I may be totally wrong and realize this when the next clue issues forth. ( The capitol Mall kinda fits too and the MN History center has Kellogg street run past it which you can see form the Capitol Mall- alot fits the Capitol MAll too) I am certain they want you away from a big park with the golf and sliding and sports....Good Luck, and has anyone else thought of Kellogg PArk?

David D. - 12:22pm Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7316 of 22136)
A close personal friend of mine, Wendy B., suggested that the "9" mentioned could refer to the old one room school house at highland. It used to be named "Webster Magnet School #9". This also ties in with the clue about learning. Plus, old and new could mean the Highland schools.

I think that line of logic is
somewhat a stretch.
The Pioneer Press would not use something
like that as a clue becasue it is very
subjective, and also controversial.
good thinking though...
I am leaning toward Highland or Como,
but the clues this year are harder than ever.
I think it might be somewhere that it has NEVER
been hid before, and they are trying to get us to
look EVERYWHERE else before they drop the bomb

Highland has a scoreboard, sledding hills, bus routes 9 and 4 run along highway 5, also 54 runs by there too. Snelling could be a man of fame, many a tome??? there is a basebll field at the corner of edgecumbe road and snelling near an MTC bus shelter and a big open area that extends all the way down edgecumbe by the golf course, but at leas an acre of land is out in the open away from the 'action'

Nick, look at last nights postings #5950 through like #6100 i think, around 8 last night...it will help you a lot re: the last few clues
these ideas have been kind of tossed around a lot...any ones about a tome..."one volume of a book of many volumes" i.e. the encyclopedia or a famous person?
bring the treasure home? these clues are extremely obscure...the next one had BETTER be more helpful, because nobody will have a clue until the last one comes
out pinpointing it, and they are running out of time! cclue 7 comes out tonight and it will help kick off WC wekend wioth a good ass clue to get the masses out
looking.

And on Newell- the clues sure fit in all right, JUST WAY TOO EASY!!!! They just don't make it that easy so soon. What would be the point? No, use your

Does anyone know a good site that lists all the clues and locations from previoius years?
Goddess- I'm pretty stuck on Battle Creek, I'll list a few reasons, though I've been through this a hundred times it seems. 1- BC is boxed in by hwy 5, 94 and 494
2- "Shout" -Battle Cry 3- Medalion there in 95, which is 4 years ago- and it would be somewhat within the logic of breaking a tradition to hide it there again so
soon. 4- popular outdoor attraction= mountian bike trails and XCountry skiing trails, also which are DOWN hill 5-"chances are nil" well, nil=0, which is the shape of
a hockey rink, which is at BC 6- There's a school right there as well 7- 94 is also known as HUDSON Rd just north of BC 8- Ruth street, as in (Babe, who
"blasted" home runs) goes right by that particular part of the park, 9- As does Longfellow St (Longfellow and Ruth are both names which could be in a Tome)

ok the only other place besides Newell is HP. It the aniversary of the carnival and it was at Highland where it was burried the first year of the carnival!! i would also
like to metion in clue 5 i think it was in the word discerning spells disc and that's is what you use to play frisbie golf. Youd almost think that for the largest sum of
money ever given for a medallion it would be in the biggest park in st.paul.

The Rock - 03:56pm Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7768 of 22138)
the reason why i exclude it is because all the clues have to be exactly on the botton and not far fetched like the iconoclast. There is a large place in Newell Park that
is very very hard to see but easy to get there. It's surrounded by bushes and trees. im going there tonight. That large place is called Devil's Den. It's a very low spot.
you can see the ks95 radio tower from there. thats where the somewhere a four comes. 94.5. An iconoclast is a very good word for a devil. And in todays clue a
tome besides meaning a book also means one of those pitchforks that a devil uses. What do you think about that now.

KEllogg and play with the two famous Kelloggs - cereal is from Battle Creek Mich. and the other is a very famous Kellogg from Minnesota - famous treaty he wrote

Step it might be beyond that. there are a few pretty good sized hills. Newell may seem like a small park but its not as small as you think. If you see like trees and
brush everywhere down there then that is it. Its about 100 feet past that. I was there yesterday for about an hour just to scope things out. dug up in obvios areas but

you can make any clue seem to point to any park at this point - right??? There is enough ideas flying around that any park makes sense - and people come up with
crazy numbers and baseball diamond configuration to think that the park that they are in contains the Medallion - guess what shurlock - there is about 20 parks that
are fair game for this little rat race that we all are doing - and well everyone thinks it's in their park that they are digging in...right??
and 2 people in the world really know where it is - and well I don't think any of us are those 2 people - so until more clues come out - all of us rats - will be running
around knocking other peoples ideas - because we think ours is the best idea and plan - The medallion won't be found until - Feb 2 or 3rd - by that time PP will
have had enough publicity to pay the extra $$ that they shelled out this year...and they'll be laughing a lot more than any of us to the bank - enough said - good luck
to all - may you find your happyness in what ever fricking park you want to dig in....

Fort Snelling State Park is in Hennepin and Dakota counties. Medallion must be in Ramsey County. Also, clue says Saint Paul park, so I would think Ft. Snelling ,
which is run by the state, would be ruled out. However, Hidden Falls is directly accross from Ft. Snelling....

I can't help but think that hours posted on a door might be the answer. My co-worker believes that clue refers to Battle Creek, where the medallion was found 4
years ago in 1995.
The Rock - 04:31pm Jan 29, 1999 CST (#7865 of 22138)
Ok here goes. This is why i say its at newell park. In clue 4 it says "but there's VALUE as WELL as IN the NEW. VALUE=medallion/location IN=its in AND
WELL+NEW = NEWELL. now for the iconoclast now that can be referred to the devil. the 9 the 5 and somewhere a four can refer to the ks95 radio tower. The 4
comes in at its radio station 94.5. In todays clue a tome, {yes it is refered to as a book} but in the big webster dictionary it says that a tome can also be a pitchfork
that the devil has. Devils den makes perfect sence. and adorn the front door there is a little shelter with a door on it by the entrance of devils den. I was just there last
night and came across this devils den and you have to go through brush and trees to get there because the real path is covered by snow. devils den is very hard to
see but once you find the sign its pretty easy to get there. What do you think of that!!!!

Newell has seen a lot of action--I'm 1/4 mile from there right now, and over lunch, there was a lot of snow sifting going on--the park looks like the surface of the

If people would go back to the iconoclastic clue. It definitely is a person who tears or TORE down a religious institution. How many have there been? Forget all the
other explanations of iconoclastic and focus on the religious aspect of it. If you figure that out, you'll get to the area of the city it's in.
Another clue--the park is bordered by a house with the address 95

Those who think an iconoclast is a devil-LOOK at a dictionary. Many iconoclasts may have gone against religious beliefs, but that's not what defines an iconoclast. It
means one who goes against established beliefs, or the norm. AND yes the clue says YOU have to be one.

Why would the right fielder throw to third base before second? If there is a force at third, then it follows that there is also a force at second. As a baseball play, it
doesn't work. Unless the PP is using it to define an area, and I think it's too early in the game. I could be wrong, but I don't like it.

local figures that really arent famous.. just a person who helped the neighborhood the park is in
