10g's, waiting on 9, if for sure Conway, giving up because that would mean that the clue writers lied to us. If you call the cities dept of parks and rec. there is a
difference between a park and recreation center. Rec center aimed at youth for community involvement and sporting activities, park, family functions with facilities
available, More picnic areas and fire rings etc.

do any of the other clues fit linwood

Alright Clue #3, let's figure this out already. If adorn the front door is to be taken literally, then I don't know if we can be looking at anything other than an address.
Its possible its referring to a posting at the door, such as one referring to hours, but that wouldn't really be much of a clue. But does anyone think that maybe that line
doesn't mean an address?

would like to know for next year, and will try to find out for everone, is when they start writing the clues, and when they hide the medallion, I am so
frustrated !!! It seems so far you can pick the clues with so many parks !!!! And the way it is going is number 9 is not going to make it any clearer.... Only 4
more clues to go...
Russ P. - 09:37pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14018 of 22141)
I Think that the Medalion is about halfway up Conway St. at Conway Park hidden near the tennis courts... I still don't get the 9-5-4 thing. It might not be at Conway
after all.

AllieGo - 09:37pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14021 of 22141)
Then you can count on it being a park. Thank you, thank you, thank you for calling.

Allison Wonderland - I don't think it means an address at all. It can mean an entrance to a park

No, I didn't go out today. Wiped out for all the hours of digging yesterday and last night. I'll go out again tonight. Hopefully No. 9 will help.

A - 09:40pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14032 of 22141)
Hey Spencer! In think that the reason it is so difficult this year is because: 1 it is the 150th anniversary of the P.P. and 2 $10,000 is on the line! So Tonight the clue
has to pinpoint something. I decided to skip school tomorrow to find that piece of shit medallion. Because if you look around this hunt has made savages out of us.
We are almost at each others throats for the thing! Although thats just my opinion I may be wrong.

But then again, if it is an address, it would be awfully strange for them to provide a clue of such precision so early. If we look at doors at Conway, there are doors to
the rec center, doors to the library, and doors to the surrounding homes. Each has only one front door however, and the number on the rec center is 2090. Hmmm,
is this sparking anyone's imagination yet?

Hey everyone, I haven't posted here for days because a: I haven't had tons of luck figuring out the clues this year, and b: it is very hard this year to slog pages and/or
post within the span of a human life time. Had a bunch of you going to Newell this year, though. (Nyuk, Nyuk!)

Actually, most of the people I have met on the hunt have been very civil and quite cool, although most admit that this hunt is taking an inordinate amount of their time.
I brought a shovel to Mass this morning so I could search the park in front of the Cathedral right after. Couldn't tell you what that homily was about.
The Mad Raker - 09:43pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14037 of 22141)
OK - here are my thoughts. "Merriam" is on many tomes -- dictionaries. Nine is the # of people playing baseball, five for basketball, four tennis courts on each park.
Ann (name to show you a sign) Arbor (trees) is near Merriam. The space needle from the fairgrounds is seen from Merriam Park. Longfellow School (located at
Merriam Park) is where one learns, also is the name of a man of fame. That said, I beleive it's at Linwood! What a confusing mess!

How big is the medallion?
Joe B. - 09:47pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14041 of 22141)
no no no... Translucent peak means a light shining through.. if you've ever been to Mounds park there is a light tower.. In one of the clues it says to stay off the
fairway it means the airway..
Downtown Dave - 09:47pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14042 of 22141)
Yes, Pat Newell mania was running wild! I went there yesterday. Wowee did people sift that snow. I still think it might be there.....
Jason Kluenenberg - 09:47pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14043 of 22141)
For some reason I think the 9-5-4 mean that those would be the best clues to lead to the place...except for the last one of course. Call it a long shot..but I dont
know.

no no no... Translucent peak means a light shining through.. if you've ever been to Mounds park there is a light tower.. In one of the clues it says to stay off the
fairway it means the airway.. The quarry part comes in with baseball field same with 9 innings 5 which is a full count and four fouls..

I don't like the 9-5-4 sports interpretation. There are nine players on 1 basbeball team and five players on 1 basketball team, but it takes both teams to make four in
tennis. Why the inconsistency?

medallion was hidden in a baseball lined up with 2nd base, 3rd base and right field. Tomorrows meanings of all the clues will be out tomorrow. It was a great turn
out and will hope to see all of you next year. Goodnight.

That was good, Mushie. The Clue person has been very clever in referencing many parks. Merriam could be it. Can you see a translucent light from the park?
Allison Wonderland - 09:57pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14062 of 22141)
Dreams are the roadmap to life; without them we are lost
If you play doubles in tennis, you have two people on one team. It takes both teams to make four. So doubles is what I was referring to.

hunt junkie - 09:57pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14064 of 22141)
I agree 9-5-4 is not a reference to players on a team. If it is, I'd say it is the lousiest clue I've heard in 8 years. It could be hours a building is open, an address or it
could pinpoint according to types of treest, clusters of trees, etc.. as they've done in the past.
There's no point knocking yourself out over this one. It could be anything.

California Dreamin' - 10:02pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14073 of 22141)
I'm back, I couldn't stay away. Great reasoning, Mushie, about Merriam except for one thing. I live nearby and checked it out tonight--a guy there thought the same
as you about the tomes. But St. Mark's steeple is not transluscent! I attend there and I have NEVER seen it lit up! The guy there pointed to a building across the
freeway as the peak, but it seemed pretty slim to me! A lot of the other clues seem to match up, though.

Dreams are the roadmap to life; without them we are lost
Actually, there is a point in knocking myself out over it because I have all the other clues figured out and I'm hoping this one will tell me where to dig (or otherwise
search). I thought about the tree thing, but trees don't have doors, so I think its one of the first two. I have no doubt its at Conway, but my address interpretations
have not yielded the treasure, so I'm looking for a new theory.

I saw the 459 and made a rather thin line from the sidewalk to the hockey rink. No luck. Then I took that line and intersected it where the two peaks of SunRay
appear as one and did a fairly major archeological expedition there, but still no luck. I can't get away from the address idea, but it still really bothers me that it would
be so obvious and so precise.

There is a sledding area at Conway. Its not obvious to see from where most people are digging, but there is a relatively steep hill at the far east end and both days I

I don't think I saw more than 100 people there at any one time (at Conway). One of the softball fields is an ice rink right now. Two of the other fields were pretty
well dug up. The fourth field, when I left this afternoon, was hardly touched for some reason. The playground is well dug up, but the hills are not, probably because
clue #2 suggested that we stay away from the action, which was assumed to be the sledding.

Well, Smitty, for once a sports explanation of 4,5,9 I can live with, except for the front door part. For those who missed it earlier though, it probably doesn't refer to
the number of players on a team. Baseball has 9 players on one team, basket ball has 5 on one team, but it would take both teams in a tennis doubles match to make
four, which seems oddly inconsistent. 18, 10, & 4 or 9,5 & 2 would seem better.
Those Medalling Kids - 10:52pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14257 of 22141)
If 9 equals innings or players for baseball, and 5 is number of basketball players, and 4 is tennis players, why is there nothing about the hockey rinks contained within
Conway? The numbers need to be reconnected in a different way. I think that the 9 and 5 will be together, not all three together. The four will be separate from the
other two numbers....

I don't like the sports interpretaion in general for 9,5,4 because it just leaves the "adorns the front door" hanging without explanation. I have pretty the same problem
with the KS95 explanation. For the I-94/5 explanation, the four doesn't seem obscure enough and I really believe they would have said something to the effect of
look between a 9, 5, and 4. I don't even like the address theory that much because it seems just too specific. So I have a ton of theories available to me, but I don't
like any of them really.

1998's "Shovel Boy"
I'm wondering how Newell is being eliminated too. I've been out there every night since Tuesday and although a tough dig, I still believe it's there. Let's just stop and
look at a few of the forgotten newel clues:
1) It's in St. Paul 2) There's a sledding hill there. 3) 9, 5 and somewhere a 4. Nine players on a baseball team (baseball field in Newell) Five players on a basketball
team (basketball courts in Newell) Four tennis players, playing singles in two individual tennis courts in Clayland park, directly across the street from Newell)~hence
somewhere a four. 4) Several deep quarries full of rocks at Newell, including a couple of kids, sit down digging shovels in the sand (also considered a quarry) 5)
Volleyball court at Newell (a volleyball net is white and stretched tight. A volley ball is round) 6) Pierce Butler street on the park's north end. Pierce Butler was a
famous radical in the senate (one definition of Iconoclast is a radical) Pierce is in several large books and has created quite a stir. 7) A tome can be a large scholarly
book, but another meaning is a record. When the medallion was hidden at Newell in 1984, it was attached to a broken 45rpm record. (also~a stretch is 45rpm, a
four and a five) 8) There is a peak at the top of the childrens playground, while not always appearing to be translucent, a flash light test has proven that light most
definitely shines through it and has the ability to cast vague images.
There are several other clues some of which are vague, some of which I will keep stashed in my own secret clue satchell, but really....it's as good as anything. I
believe the abandonment comes from mere "giving up"
-just my thoughts.....if there are really good arguments for other places and someone wouldn't mind sharing, please dump the info for me, thank you.

Allison, there is also 4 periods in hockey. I was checking out the front door of the rec center, but there is absolutely nothing there. Its a real puzzler this year. I've
been able to get real close for 20 years now, but this one is the hardest yet. Hats off to the person who did this one...

ShovelMaster,
If you go to almost ANY park you can find answers for those clues. We went to Palace park today because of the st francias connection. A lot of it made sence,
and there were people digging there.
This is really driving me nutz!!!!

Allison, one of the reasons I liked Merriam for a while is that the sports explanations worked for that park as well as the door adorning. Office hours were posted on
the door as 9-5 and 8-4. Plus I-94 borders the park. This type of explanation may work elsewhere as well (or it could be brain vapor). Merriam is heavily damaged
by the peak clue, though. Oh well.

Let me repost my interpretation of Clue #1 It is hidden in a park. It is not on a golf course. Said park may or may not be associated with a golf course, but since
we're making these clues so vague, and we know you won't know where to look, just do us a favor and don't tear up the golf courses like you usually do.

Since this keeps getting talked about... Think of how early the clue containing 9,4, and 5 appeared. In my experience searching for the medallion it would be far too
early to give landmarks inside a park to denote the location of the medallion, but rather to lead you in the direction of the park. Think of major roads/highways with
these numbers in it.

I'm still at Conway Medallion Kid. That's the spot. Mike Armstrong, I remember one of the early clues last year (the Rosebud clue) was about sledding. But was
that to narrow down the park, or was it to tell you that the medallion was near the sledding hill, or maybe both. I think its possible the 9,5,4 may narrow down the
site, though I don't mean to imply I disagree with you. Its just that I have all the rest figured out but that one, and I was hoping it would tell me where to dig.

people there tomorrow. If you don't understand the clues as to why Conway, just ask.

I'm still not conviced it's Conway. I'd got to the Capitol Mall near Columbus st first. Yearnign for learining is Constitution St or University Ave. OK, I don't have the
High water thing figured out yet, but Conway and Highland are still pretty thin.
Michigan Wolverine - 11:33pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14420 of 22141)
Is it not true that there is a sledding attraction at the Capital this year?
The 1st sign is quite visible from the Capital mall.
Plus the learning clue fits: University Ave.
Plus the history fits: Historical Society.
Plus the iconoclast fits: Jesse Ventura.
I still think you guys should be at the Capital.

Treasure Digger - 11:38pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14454 of 22141)
A park is never done over. The medallion has to be dug over at least 7 or 8 times before it's actually found. If you were at Cherokee last year, it was dug over and
no unturned snow. The clues for Conway -- Library right on the park, all the out door attraction games you can pretty much have (basketball, baseball/softball,
tennis, soccer, hockey, ice skating), trees in a line (Woodrow "Wilson" Street, Ruth - a section of many volumes (Bible), iconoclast - break the tradition and have a
new park, 9, 5 & 4 (players: basketball 5, football 9, tennis 4), shouting at all the games, and of course, signs on all the baseball fences that state "No golfing" What
have I left out???
Vickie M - 11:38pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14455 of 22141)

I'm thinking Highland now. Trees in a line: MonTREEal, HamLINE Maybe at the corner of Montreal and Hamline? Water tower on high, red light on the tower? 9
hole golf course? Par 4 and 5's? Don't disturb the fairways and greens...Famous man maybe Ford?

Treasure Digger - 11:43pm Jan 31, 1999 CST (#14474 of 22141)
Oh, I left out the fact of the translucent peak is the Sun Ray mall has 2 glass peak roofs that are very visible at the Conway Park. The streets are Conway, Wilson,
Ruth, and some others that I can't quite think of right now. It isn't in the Hudson book, so you'll have to look it up on Map Blast or Map Quest. It used to be a park
for 3M but they gave it to the city. Oh, there's also a Community Center there. A small sliding hill to the east, a little bit bigger than Cherokee was last year and a
playground. A lot of new renovations has also been going on there. Heard that from a gentleman who lives 2 blocks away from the park. How's that for information?

Balloons come in different sizes. And further adding to that thought, my next thinking is they probably filled the balloon with water and place the medallion inside it
and then froze it. Not filling the balloon a lot with water just a little to freeze the medallion.

therefore, breaking tradition.

O.K., O.K., I apologize for my previous, bitter jabs. I'm a tad bit sorry I can't look for it. But you people can, so I'll tell you why I think it's at the Capital.
Here's why it seems to be hidden at the Capital.
Clue One:
It says public grounds first, then a park. Of course the mall can be called a park (and probabaly was called a park when it was last at the Capital), but you would
think of it as public grounds first.
Clue Two:
I was told there is a sledding attraction at the Capital this year. Even if there isn't, there was in past years. Do you all remember it?
Clue Three:
Not sure about the numbers.
Clue Four:
The "past" refers almost certainly to the Minnesota Historical Society, which sits between the Capital and the Cathedral.
And the strongest evidence of all the clues I think is "iconoclast." Journalists fashion themselves as high-brow people, and they would not pass up the opportunity to
make a reference to the curiosity that has aroused the attention of the nation. An iconoclast is, of course, somone who defies convention, and it is probably hard to
think of a better application than to your new governor.
Clue Five:
"Learning" refers to University Avenue, which runs into the Capital.
Clue Six:
Not sure about the famous person.
Clue Seven:
There is a specific word for a line of trees, though I cannot recall it now. A very specific word. All literate people, Think hard. It is something close to "promenade,"
for that's the word that comes to mind.
Clue Eight:
Not sure about the translucent reference, though there are some skyscrapers in St. Paul that have funky tops.
Clue Nine:
The red object would almost certainly be the large "1st" sign, long a staple of medallion clues.
If I were not 650 miles away, I would be looking at the Capital.
Decide for yourselves, being careful to recognize that it is difficult to abandon previous theories because you have invested so much in them, thus people continually
stretching the clues to fit their theories.
Good luck all. Ignore what I said about "YOU" never finding it. Somone finds it.
Why not you?

year...4 theres a small history thing there, kind of a museum and Iconoclasts can be highlanders...5, Library I think is somewhere there...6, Its on Snelling, thats a
famous name right?. 7, Theres trees in a line down snelling.8, The round and white thing is a clue to what the medalion is in...and theres a churchlike thing with a
translucent like top, and 9 Water tower with red lights on it

L.J. - 12:50am Feb 1, 1999 CST (#14689 of 22142)
I was at Conway earlier this evening.I wish I could be out digging but not possible tonight so I will tell you why I think it is at "CONWAY".
CLUE#1: It's a public ground and is in St.Paul, and it is a park. They are basically telling you that a golf course is not nearby.
Clue#2: There are hills for sliding but it's on the other side of the park away from all the ball fields, etc...
Clue#3: I haven't quite got this one yet but I think you have to do some calculations with the numbers to "figure" them out.
Clue#4: The library is right there and if it is at this park it will be the first time so it is new. And you yourself would be the iconoclast by digging up (destroying)
looking for the medallion which is a symbol of the Winter Carnival.
Clue#5: Again the library and "goal" for hockey, broomball, etc..
Clue#6: "A man of Fame" could be Tim Conway or Conway Twitty. A tome can be a scholalary book again for the library. it mentions "game" which is for
Basketball, hockey, baseball, etc...
Clue#7: Clear could be for the "ice" skating rinks. There are two different sets of trees that are "in a line" if you look at them both they direct you to look at Wilson
St., which Wilson could be either a first or last name. And the valuable sign could be the street sign.
Clue#8: This one tells you what it is hidden in and that is sort of obvious a baseball or softball. And if you look towards Sunray Shopping center you can see the
Translucent peak(s), and it is not far and within your sight.
Clue#9: The water on high is the water tower near the park, and the large red object is the 3M sign on the tallest 3M building over there.
Those are my theories on this whole confusing hunt, I may be way off and alot of people may not agree but, I just wanted to share that with other people because I
have a feeling that someone will find it by mid morning. Good luck to all!!

translucent peak? This is just my second year at all this stuff, so I'm still trying to figure out how these people write this stuff!

street, landmark, park names from the clues somehow.. then the last 2 basically drag you to the park with a shovel...

City Hall downtown St. Paul has a transculent light. 1st Banks has the big red sign and also in Kellogg is the Salvation Army's Red Well. You should see the people
down their digging. Quite a few. We were there for about 1 1/2 hour

well, I was thinking some of the numbers match, the library is there, as is the "score" for an orchestra performance. You may be able to see the red first bank tower
neon. I have not been there, but is that not where the ice sculptures are? Talk about translucent stuff, there would be lots of ice. Then, maybe you can see Galtier
Plaza, and doesn't that have the windows way up high? That could fit the translucent peak. Besides, who would think Rice park, right in the middle of everything? I
dunno, it was just a thought before I read anything about conway.

There is a house number across Ruth with those numbers. In addition, on that same end of the park is the #4 backstop. It could also refer to the count of trees that
are in straight lines.
Also, if you are at a game and you're shouting...where are you? bleachers. Those are on both sides of the #4 backstop and not at the others. The infield of that ball
field is pretty dug up...but not completely. And there is plenty other places that the snow is still untouched.

Also, anyone who still thinks its at Highland, Como, Phalen, or Battle Creek is fooling themselves. There's no way they would put it in a park that big and not have
identified it by now.

But seriously, when it was in Highland last time the "elevated terrain" clue came relatively early. In Battle Creek you could spell out B-A-T-T-L-E by the sixth clue.
Como and it Cuomo without you clue came pretty early. Even the Chair-o-key clue last year by what, the eighth or ninth at the latest and that smaller than Highland.
If it was at Highland, they would have said so by now.

100+ people are digging in conway.
About 8 are in HP. And of the eight, four of them climbed security fence to dig. It is NOT in HP.

I believe it to be downtown in Kellogg, There are a number of people down there looking. The transculent peaks many from that park. 1st sign from the bank. Many
rows of trees. Pigs eye was a rebel and he marked many time on the walls there. Saint Paul also on the walls their. A huge rock with something from the 1941. What
do you all think?

think the translucent peak at highland is the red lights on top of the hp watertower. i also think it is in the 900 block of south snelling which would put it
between ford parkway and montreal ave

Oh that's right Bill, you're the one who insists iconoclast = Highlander. The iconoclast in Conway is simply saying that its somewhere its never been before, which its
never been in Conway before. Or possibly it means its been hidden in a way that you would not expect, which could be any park then. The clue says you need to
BE an iconoclast, not LOOK for one. Two, being in Highland Park doesn't make you a Highlander. And three, to say you can be an iconoclast by imitating someone
is something of a paradox.
CHRIS13 - 02:23am Feb 1, 1999 CST (#15003 of 22142)

PJ Martain - 02:23am Feb 1, 1999 CST (#15004 of 22142)
WS Will do you actually live on the West Side. If you were out did you still see a number of people at Kellogg digging?

My take on the iconoclast thing is that this is the first year it has been at a rec center type park as opposed to parks like Highland, Como, Newell, Phalen.
Regalman - 02:24am Feb 1, 1999 CST (#15007 of 22142)
Hey gordon if you read tonight's clue carefully it says ALSO help to orient you, the water on high and red object are separate items, like they are at the right park
CHRIS13 - 02:24am Feb 1, 1999 CST (#15008 of 22142)
it really could be at a number of parks. with all that money at stake they are not going to make it easy
