Yesterday there were at least one hundred people at Mounds and nobody has found it yet. So I'm wondering what other park could it possibly be? Edit MessageDelete Message

R C - 08:46am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#985 of 8457)

Hi everyone! We established before that Rosebud is a name of a Sioux Tribe that's buried at Mounds Park. So, zooming doesn't necessarily have to mean sledding - it could mean the hill that kid's zoom down on their bikes in the summer or something! Or that airplanes zoom by. The smoke comes from the trains' smokestacks. Edit MessageDelete Message

Shawnster Johnster - 08:50am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#986 of 8457)

Rosebud is also the name of a kid's sled. Other than that clue, could it not be another park?

How about a "crytpographic" clue, anyone have one? I know that they have an anagram for "dome" in the "demo" verse, is that public knowledge yet? Do you think dome has to be Cathedral??? Edit MessageDelete Message

Chris Palmer - 08:51am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#987 of 8457)

Good morning and tally ho! In Mounds, to the west of the beacon, there is a hill that has been used for sledding, so you could justify the Rosebud and zoom clues that way. It's not the best sledding in town, but I think it's alright. Edit MessageDelete Message

Shawnster Johnster - 08:54am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#988 of 8457)

Chris, help me out. I'm trying to find another reason to pick another park. What are the urban/suburban/burns clues?? that might mean I am out of luck. I'm not going to mounds park to search with 100 other perople... Edit MessageDelete Message

Jim the Freight Train - 09:00am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#989 of 8457)

Hey Shawnster, yesterday I overheard a couple people talking at Mounds that they had won it in the past and were convinced that the medallion is definitely at Mounds. But I still don't understand why it has not yet been found when there are soooo many people at Mounds? Edit MessageDelete Message

Mattykid - 09:03am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#990 of 8457)

Im thinking it is definetely at Mounds!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Keast - 09:04am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#991 of 8457)

Its a word Game. Mound Park is an Urban Park as well as Mound being a Suburb of St Paul. At least in my opinion Edit MessageDelete Message

Mattykid - 09:05am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#992 of 8457)

can somebody help me whats with the childs road??? Edit MessageDelete Message

Jim the Freight Train - 09:06am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#993 of 8457)

It can't be in Mound because the first clue indicated that it was in a St. Paul park. Edit MessageDelete Message

Jim the Freight Train - 09:07am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#994 of 8457)

Where are you getting Childs Road from? Edit MessageDelete Message

R C - 09:09am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#995 of 8457)

Jim the FT: They're talking about Mounds Park in St. Paul Edit MessageDelete Message

R C - 09:10am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#996 of 8457)

and someone thought Child's Road - because of the "kids zooming" clue. Edit MessageDelete Message

Snowball2 - 09:10am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#997 of 8457)

Jim the Freight Train: Are you thinking of Mounnd the City?? Because the Mounds park that people are speaking of is across from Downtown St. Paul in the Dayton's Bluff area. (Indian Mounds Park) Edit MessageDelete Message

Mattykid - 09:10am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#998 of 8457)

Jim the Freight Train - 09:13am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1001 of 8457)

Snowball2, I didn't say that it was in the city of Mound it was Keast, which I told Keast that it has to be in a St. Paul park because of the first clue. I'm with you I think it is at Mounds. Edit MessageDelete Message

Chris Palmer - 09:13am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1002 of 8457)

Shawnster:

Sorry to take so long to respond - I was trying to ketchup on the 558 messages I missed since yesterday AM!!! My take on the urban/suburban is that they are terms for "city". Or, if according to an earlier posting (can't remember #), Urban is indeed Urban Place, take the whole clue - "place to play...city streets will show you the way" - and pull Urban Place out of it, like they did with "Palm" and "Lot" last year. It seems that this year we will not get something as easy as Cuomo without the "u". Am I making any sense? I can't really tell. Edit MessageDelete Message

R C - 09:13am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1003 of 8457)

Well, I don't work too far from Mounds Park - so I think I'll go out at lunchtime and look. Maybe try to find a place where there's not too many footprints. It sounds like it's pretty picked through though. Edit MessageDelete Message

Keast - 09:15am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1004 of 8457)

I'm saying its a word game. it's for sure in Mounds Park and that is a urban park Mound the city is a word game to give you the Suburban part. Edit MessageDelete Message

Jim the Freight Train - 09:17am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1005 of 8457)

Thanks Keast I misunderstood you. Everybody thinks its in Mounds, so why are we still at work and not out digging? Edit MessageDelete Message

Desire-to-win - 09:25am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1008 of 8457)

How can it be at Cherokee because I was there yesterday and there is no sledding unless you want to fall off of the bluffs? Edit MessageDelete Message

Desire-to-win - 09:32am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1009 of 8457)

Desire-to-win: I didn't say that we were very smart kids, we chose thoes suicide runs on tracks down the bluff. Yes it was stupid, but as kids we thought we were invinceable. Edit MessageDelete Message

Desire-to-win - 09:39am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1012 of 8457)

Where did you go sledding? The area is full of trees and then bluffs. What location in Cherokee Park could possibly be used for sledding? Edit MessageDelete Message

mikem - 09:42am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1013 of 8457)

it can not be at mounds the clues really dont point to mounds more of charokee park Edit MessageDelete Message

Wee Monster - 09:43am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1014 of 8457)

I've been wondering about sledding at Cherokee Park. That's my personal odds-on favorite location right now, but I took the Rosebud clue pretty literally and didn't want to dig in a spot with no sledding. So, Snowball2, do kids really zoom on the bluffs in Cherokee? (I also noted yesterday on a map that "Joy" street runs through Cherokee -- all those references to "pleasure" in the clues???) I'm a first-timer at this. Am I just on smack? Love to hear feedback. Edit MessageDelete Message

Desire-to-win - 09:46am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1015 of 8457)

Thanks Snowball2: I've got my Hudsons map book in one hand and my sled in the other. Desire-to-win is out of here but will check in later. Edit MessageDelete Message

greenslvs2 - 09:46am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1016 of 8457)

Wee Monster: You're the first to bring up Joy=Pleasure... Maybe you're on to something particularly if the sledding done at Cherokee is done near Joy Street. Snowball2? Edit MessageDelete Message

mikem - 09:48am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1017 of 8457)

looked up plume in the dictionary and it says "visible emission from a chimney flue"that means mounds is out, gone, later, see ya, get lost!!!!!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Jake836 - 09:48am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1018 of 8457)

Jake's wild crazy assumption Swede Hollow Park St. Paul park Water=creek Woods=woods in park, Wood place street going into park Roses or Rosebud possible reference to the movie with the Rosebud sleds there is a hill in Swede Hollow but it is super steep and you would definitely go ZOOM. Or Arcade Street which is very nearby and an arcade is a good place to play in the winter. demo and mode refer to the 2 domes of the cathedral and capitol, deco is on the dome of the cathedral. According to my fiances park book, there is a large smokestack visible from Swede Hollow park. Doesn't the NSP plant have 2 smokestacks? plume is singular only 1 plume of smoke. RR tracks? there used to be some at Swede Hollow but they were removed. Questions I have (mother lode) possible connection to Bob Dole? What was his mother's name? Who knows? Good Luck hunters!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Snowball2 - 09:53am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1019 of 8457)

Desire-to-win: If you know where the shallow ballfield is (where 13 cuts by Annapolis), we would follow the bluff line for about 40 yards (by the old stump). The old stump is where we would hook our sled ropes so we could get in our sleds, and one of our sane friends would release us. We would pack down the snow in a track(kind of like a warter slide) between the trees in a zig-zag fassion down the bluff. Many cuts and scrapes were had by all, even a few broken bones (try dragging a cring kid, with a broken leg, in a sled up the bluff, IT SUCKS.) I don't know if the kids are still doing it, or if a lot of that area of the bluff has eroded away. It's been quite a long time since I've broken my arm. Edit MessageDelete Message

Snowball2 - 10:01am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1020 of 8457)

greenslvs2: I never made the joy street connection, it's kind of flat for sledding, but JOY IS PLEASURABLE!!!

GOOD CALL Wee Monster!!!

Desire-to-win: Good Luck!!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Mr. Kow It All -- What are your feelings on Newell? -- I've been to the Frog Pond now a few times and, well, we alomost found it there last year, but I don't think it's there. Edit MessageDelete Message

Has anyone been down at the paper at night yet? if so how are the crowds? It was sad reading todays qlue, it still leaves it up in the air for a couple different locations. Edit MessageDelete Message

Pat Pfundstein - 10:14am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1023 of 8457)

I am starting to think it is not in one of the larger parks. I thought Highland was the strongest until the plume of smoke thing; I'd have to drive around the park to see if there is an answer to that one. The lack of a park specific clue by now also indicates a smaller park, for the large ones take a while to whittle down. If only I could figure out a dome for Newell... Be warned, though, you can read way too much into the clues (something I think alot of us are doing). Every word does not contain an obscure meaning. RC We definitely did NOT establish the Rosebud as the Indian Mounds tribe. Rosebud (as was kindly mailed to me) is a reservation in SD containing several tribes of Sioux. I thought I had heard the Mounds predated the Dakota, but I may well be wrong. I still maintain Rosebud's primary meaning has to do with a sled or I'll eat those papers! Edit MessageDelete Message

Pat Pfundstein - 10:20am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1024 of 8457)

CK1 I am glad to see someone besides me is desperately clinging to Newell! Help me rationalize a dome clue, and I'll be back on track! By the way, the phrase just quoted may have nothing to do with trains; it may be a hint that the prize is not in a big park (like Mounds or Highland), but is in a small one like Prospect (or Newell). Love to Fortis! Edit MessageDelete Message

SNOWBALL2 you sound like you have been in this hunt for many a year. I noticed you ruled out Highland. What is your gut fell right now as to what park it's in? Edit MessageDelete Message

I think you can still see the NSP stack from highland or am I mistaken. Edit MessageDelete Message

C Wheaton - 10:34am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1030 of 8457)

What is wrong with you people. It's not Newell, the last time it was there they ripped it up pretty bad. I don't think they would put it there again. The only park that fits all the clues so far is Mounds. Unless you read too much into them. The rosebud clue has nothing to do with Indians it's a seld for the love of god. Please go rent "citizen kane". You all sould look back at the old clues and see how much can be read into them. Not much, they are pretty clear. Edit MessageDelete Message

Snowball2 - 10:35am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1031 of 8457)

J: WAIT!!! Highland is still on one my list, I havn't ruled it out. Sorry if I somehow gave you this impression. Highland is on my possible list, as well as Newell, and Phalen/Keller, not my probable list. Probable lists include the fore-runners-Cherokee, Mounds, and Prospect Terrace. Edit MessageDelete Message

Snowball2 - 10:42am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1032 of 8457)

J: A few other Highland leads is in clue #1 the mention of "luck ONE" and I believe in clue #3 the comment of "FIRST". When you put these together you come up with 1 and 1 to make 11. The two water towers are very close to the 11th hole on the Highland Golf Course. HGC is extreemly fussy about people digging for the med. on their course. But this area of the course is under a face lift and is currently ripped up. This is not an invite to trample, but surley food for thought. Edit MessageDelete Message

J - 10:43am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1033 of 8457)

Sorry, SNOWBALL2 I thought you ruled it out.But back to the question, if you had to dig right now where would you go? Edit MessageDelete Message

Snowball2 - 10:46am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1034 of 8457)

J: The plume of smoke would lead me to the NSP plant and Cherokee. Edit MessageDelete Message

Marian Michel - 10:48am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1035 of 8457)

Well I have to believe alot of you are reading to much into the clues as I've done in the past. Reading thru the history of the clues from past years I have noticed that they really tell you the boundries around where its at (which park). Most of them descibe what it's covered, wrap or bound in. I like the idea of the rosebud pasta container idea. I really believe thats what it's in. My hsuband is stuck on highland park. Edit MessageDelete Message

andyb - 10:53am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1036 of 8457)

CK1, Frog pond!?!?! I dug there last night and it isn't on or under the frog as far as I can tell. kidding aside: I'm a believer in the "delay in naming the park = it is a small park" theory. If it were something like Highland, they would have had us all there by now because it would take so long to search. Swami sez: Cherokee or Prospect. Edit MessageDelete Message

J - 10:54am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1037 of 8457)

SNOWBALL2, because of your experience I value your opinion. I'm still stuck on Mounds, but Cherokee is coming on strong. I wish todays qlue would have put me over the hump to a definite park. Edit MessageDelete Message

You can see that stack from Hudson, I still dont think the clues have narrowed it down. p.s. i've seen a few stacks at casey's bar - are there any parks down that way? Edit MessageDelete Message

Wanderer - 11:44am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1043 of 8457)

REASONS WHY I THINK IT'S CHEROKEE HEIGHTS:

If you have the "Treasure Hunters Guide", look up Cherokee Park. It states: "...offers quite a view of the river valley, ESPECIALLY views of the CATHEDRAL (dome #1), CAPITOL(dome #2), DOWNTOWN (city streets), LANDMARK BREWERY, NSP POWER PLANT (smoke stack)...vast woods and brush that predominate this bluff(water-MISS. woods-obvious)...stretches for about a mile from Annapolis Street(again city streets)..." There are train tracks (quite a lot of them, in fact) accross the river. And it is, as the NAME suggests, on higher ground!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Snowball2 - 11:46am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1044 of 8457)

Godd Luck to ALL, for I'm out until Mon. am.

Have to head to Duluth!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Wanderer - 11:50am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1045 of 8457)

And for those of you who still think it's at Mounds, "a plume of smoke in the skies" is a constant, steady stream of smoke. The smoke trains put up is NOT constant or staedy. Not to mention the clue says "A" plume of skoke, as in ONE. Edit MessageDelete Message

Desire-to-win - 11:51am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1046 of 8457)

Past years clues and explanations always reference the container the medallion is inside. The Rosebud just might be referencing the container. Maybe considering other places, such as warmer places, were kids zoom in the summertime might be a place to look. Again, not a sledding place. Edit MessageDelete Message

Tonsil Cock - 11:53am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1047 of 8457)

There are some pretty steep sledding hills a Cherokee. I'm not sure I would jump on that right away. Edit MessageDelete Message

I'm with you, Wanderer. I was thinking of Cherokee, but couldn't figure out how "dome" was related. I don't have the "Guide"--where can I get it? Is it online anywhere? Edit MessageDelete Message

Everyone keeps saying all cluse fit Mounds, I don't get it...I see the code clue with demo and mode making dome which is like a mound but I think thats reaching. Heading out to Mounds now to take a look around...gut feeling says Phalen. Cherokee, in 93 gave a smoke stacks clue I don't think they would do that again, and Newell hasn't fit any clues yet. Oh well Good luck Edit MessageDelete Message

R C - 12:26pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1050 of 8457)

Hi everyone! I just got back from searching Arlington Fields on my lunch hour. It looks like a few people have been there, but not many. A lot of the clues fit, but no luck :-(. I guess I'm on the wrong "track" - haha. There is a huge dome there though, and a sliding hill, and a place where kids like to play (batting cages). But that's about all. No smokestack. Edit MessageDelete Message

BeeyoB - 12:33pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1051 of 8457)

Just a quick thought. There are two Mounds Parks, the smaller park north west a few blocks of the larger. The BOOK says "this is high ground", so we checked it out last night. You can see the beacon, the one, theres a playground, etc. We found it odd that the gate was open at 11pm, and the lot plowed, but realized that there is utility garage there. The smoke stack may draw me across the river tonight. Prospect seems too residential, people may complain. Patrick Mc's tonight for starters. Sax, yeah I changed my pict, sorry for any confusion. Maybe I'll use the other for live updates only! Luck everyone. Waiting for 11:30pm.... Edit MessageDelete Message

Linwood is at Saint Clair and Pleasent Avenues in Mac-Grov. It's fits everthing but the sled clue. There is nowhere to slide there. And for all of you "rosebud" is just sledding, nothing else. Other strees around are Avon, Victoria, and Benhill. Hope that helps. Edit MessageDelete Message

Hey, all. I've had enough of this e-hunting from Milwaukee! I'm leaving in a few minutes. I've got a friend in the Cities with a laptop so I should be able to check back with the Water Cooler crew, but I should be physically out snooping around Mounds and other parks later tonight. If you spot me, say hello. I'll be wearing a black Vikings jacket with goldilocks on the back and a St. Paul Saints cap. I've had my fill of Packer clothes. Edit MessageDelete Message

Wanderer... With all due respect, Get off your duff and hunt! Stop looking at the map. Cherokee Park is on a bluff. The tracks and Water street are no where near the park. If you want to get to the tracks or Water street its a short sled trip down a very steep hill.

I went by Cherokee last night. Zero people there. I'm sure that will change.

Went to Highland...Not a bad bet either. If it's at Highland, I probably covered it even more with my sporatic shoveling.

Have Fun! See you out there! Edit MessageDelete Message

Hey Pocket, you don't mean the little grove with the drain pipes, do you? I went there briefly, but didn't see much of interest. If that's where you're going, good luck! Do think that it could be Irvine Park, It's surrounded by homes, and if you look to the north there's the Cathedral and the Civic center and to the souteast you have the river and railroad tracks. The NSP smokestack can be seen to the south, and as foar as the "rosebud" theroy, like everyone thinks it may be in a pasta box with the rose logo on it. Am I being far fetched on this idea? Don't forget the the large slope on both sides of the park, where kids do slide. Edit MessageDelete Message

hi all i am new here as a writer, but was reading earlier today. the wife and kids and i went to cherokee around noon. the fog and clouds obscured alot of downtown, but the talk of locals said that the domes can be seen when clear. also the stack for schmidt's is clearly visible and belching out smoke. there are streets that you cross in the area that are named water and wood. there are sledding hills and playground equipment, ie slides. the others there were saying that there is a rose garden, at the bottom of one hill, by a slide, in the park. forget the other parks. it is cherokee! see you all there at 11:45 after i get the next clue. the park is still very large for the clues that we have so far. luck to you all. Edit MessageDelete Message

Troy Mclure - 02:57pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1219 of 8457)

Well as a matter of FACT I think that plume means Indian feather OR a smoke plume. Edit MessageDelete Message

Joe Medallion - 02:58pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1220 of 8457)

It's still at Cherokee! Edit MessageDelete Message

Dr. S. Livingston - 02:58pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1222 of 8457)

I believe plume means exactly what it is supposed to. I really don't believe those who wrote the clues are wise enough to put double meanings into words. Edit MessageDelete Message

oh well i guess it could have somthing to do with the indian feather, cuz isnt rosebud, like an indian tribe or somthing Edit MessageDelete Message

Dr. S. Livingston - 03:01pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1225 of 8457)

Maybe I am missing something but, what is all the talk about domes for? I don't see any reference to a dome in the clues. Edit MessageDelete Message

Rosebud is an indian reservation in S.D. Edit MessageDelete Message

ryan quinn - 03:03pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1228 of 8457)

you can spell dome with mode and demo which are in the 4th clue Edit MessageDelete Message

Heather - 03:04pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1229 of 8457)

Hey, why don't you guys clean it up a little. We don't need to be reading all your immature postings. You two can e-mail each other instead of including all of us. Edit MessageDelete Message

Dr. S. Livingston - 03:05pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1230 of 8457)

Perhaps the "rosebud" reference is to direct us to INDIAN mounds park. You can see the smoke stack on the mississippi and downtown st.paul is visible from there. Edit MessageDelete Message

Pat Pfundstein - 03:05pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1231 of 8457)

Dr. The domes are the consensus decoding of Demo and Mode. Edit MessageDelete Message

ryan quinn - 03:07pm Jan 30, 1998 CST (#1232 of 8457)

thats kind of what i was thinking, indian mounds park of course you can see all of these things from more than one park. but if it isnt indian nounds, what does the rosebud mean Edit MessageDelete Message

I state again that if Rosebud is not a reference to sledding, I'll eat every Pioneer Press with a Clue printed in it. It may also refer to the container of the medallion (as last years clue pointed both to Bandana Square and the bandana wrapping the prize. Edit MessageDelete Message
