99 YEAR OF THE COOLER

I think the medallion will be found this weekend. I plan to camp out there if I can risk getting sicker. I think the orignal guess of found around 8 is a great guess, but if its at mounds 6 or 7 will do it. But its been 11 years since its been at mounds so maybe 11 paces from something. I think Mounds is out. Highland feels more likely. The twin "dome" towers, the lighthouse...pretty dark out there too (gloom)? Edit MessageDelete Message

R C - 07:00pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#739 of 8457)

It won't be at Rice Park because they'd be worried that diggers would harm the ice sculptures. Also, it would get in the way of the other carnival goings-on. Edit MessageDelete Message

Nimrod , I'm back on line for a bit. I looked for your email again but it looks like gibberish and my server can't figure it out either. Try emailing me (click on my head), and then I'll have a return.

A couple of other points. 1) If you went with Greg Sax's theory of no repeats, then you would have ruled out Como last year (since as Greg points out, it set a new record for turn arounds). 2) I can't remember. Oh yeah, you can see the space needle from Newell Park you know. Edit MessageDelete Message

I think you guys are way off with Highland, it was there just 2 years ago, they never do that. Keep in mind that the 2nd or 3rd clue always gives what the medallion is in, something to do with a rose bud this year. All you Mounds fans, why???? Edit MessageDelete Message

I'd be willing to bet a batch of people left the Cooler for Seinfeld. Just a hunch. Anyway, Gabe's is probably a good bet for local chatter on the medallion hunt, but you might be better off going somewhere well known for Winter Carnival participation. George McGovern's on W. 7th is a renowned Vulcan haunt. Belly up to the bar, and you'll be sure to get the latest gossip. I do believe that the whole city gets medallion fever, but experience has taught me that the closer you are to where most of the events occur, the more diggers you'll find. Edit MessageDelete Message

mother dole - 08:45pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#771 of 8457)

New here, don't know if anyone else has said this. This all refers to Highland Park. Montreal and Rome are both names of streets that are cities and they are on the west edge of the golf course. Another street there is Beechwood - (water+wood). The other street (these are all consecutive) is Hillcrest (certainly high ground). But I think its at Mound, anyway :) Edit MessageDelete Message

Pat Pfundstein - 08:51pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#772 of 8457)

What the heck! I am going to grab my lovely wife, and get my hind quarters into the great outdoors! I think it is at Newell, but I am going to scout out Mounds right now! See you all there@! Edit MessageDelete Message

The Clue Master - 08:53pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#773 of 8457)

Thanks for the condensed info Mr. Sax. I have clipped and saved every original printed daily clue and the explinations since 1980. A lot of them are real yellow and frail. I'll bring your info with me now printed on fresh paper. The only difference will be that my originals have various beer and coffee stains on them with many stories associated with each stain. I still buy the daily paper for the originals, only because I have such a collection going. It's nice to see that you're still into the 'Hunt' even though you're miles away. I've aged a bit since I've started, but the drive is still there. Camping out all night and digging for 12 - 15 hours at a time are things of the past. I try to use my head a bit more these days, and thanks to you and the others in the 'cooler', it has helped a great deal. Edit MessageDelete Message

Vicki Burnett - 08:53pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#774 of 8457)

Well actually....Mother Lode means mineral deposits. The mounds in mounds park are far from being mineral deposits. They are burial grounds. Edit MessageDelete Message

Vicki Burnett - 08:56pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#775 of 8457)

Of course....they could also refer to the "mother lode" as a gold mine. Edit MessageDelete Message

Vicki Burnett - 09:00pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#776 of 8457)

I personally think that one and two are just general ideas. Number one says look in a park in St. Paul. So that gives you a big picture of St.Pauls parks as a whole. The next clue narrows it down a little more. Gives us a picture of a park near or around somewhere with high ground.... Edit MessageDelete Message

Vicki Burnett - 09:04pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#777 of 8457)

So I'm thinking...Highland park...or the Battle Creek- Ski Area...or at least something of that nature. Again they are narrowing...talking generally about location. Edit MessageDelete Message

I've been a lurker since the Estabrook days last year. This is lots of fun, and you guys are so helpful. It's amazing how close I come every year. I should have found it in highland, I was right on top of it. But the snow was really packed down. Oh well. see you at Mounds :) Edit MessageDelete Message

Vicki Burnett - 09:10pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#780 of 8457)

#3 I can think of only two places where kids like to go zoom. On a hill or on a slide. But I don't think, on the third clue they'd get that general. Edit MessageDelete Message

Vicki Burnett - 09:13pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#781 of 8457)

What does mounds have anything to do with zooming...fun..rosebud...? Kids don't go sliding down a Slide during winter...so that's definitely out of the question. Edit MessageDelete Message

Vicki Burnett - 09:17pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#782 of 8457)

I think #4 is a pretty good clue. FIRST you have to crack this CODE. So here is a demonstration of the direction to pursue, as you hunt for the mother lode (goldmine) Edit MessageDelete Message

mode and demo translated are dome as in the capitol and the cathedral object in sight is the tower mother lode is the barges and the coal mine that used to be underneath kids like to zoom at the airport slide down hills along with bikes skateboards and rollerblades the rose is a painting on a building and you have thorn st nearby and not to mention that there is a playground nearby and kids do play in them in the wintertime Edit MessageDelete Message

clueless - 10:02pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#792 of 8457)

Crack our code.... Code divided in two is CO and DE maybe colorado and delaware as streets or cities of these states as the streets that lead to the med...Also do you really think they will get that specific until this weekend. The pioneer press and winter carnival want to get as many people to look for the medallion as possible so don't look for really specific clues until saturday and sunday because that is when most people can hunt...lastly, it very well could be in a small park because they usually make the hints to the park obvious by this time if it is in a large park. If it is in a small park, it will most likely be found soon after the park is identified thus the reason to have vague clues to its where abouts until this weekend. Edit MessageDelete Message

Sherri: Thanks for the real-time account of the Mounds dig site. It's the first time I've heard someone mention the "usual" areas that are dug up (signs, benches, etc.) - that kind of detail is the sign of a true digger. But then I already knew that about you, didn't I? Clue Master: Thanks for the good word. If I get my way, all of the clues (1952-present) will soon be available for fresh printing, both at Pioneer Planet and at all the St. Paul public libraries. I have the means. It may not happen this year, but a history lesson is best given before a hunt anyway. Edit MessageDelete Message

Just to confuse things a bit more, Arlington does run straight into Phalen. It hasn't been there in quite a while. "Woods and water" could always be referring to a golf course. On the other hand Lexington runs from Como to Highland. I sincerely doubt that anyone who works at Como Park would tolerate it being hidden there again after all the damage last year. Highland does have a very large water tower in view and plenty of hills as well as a golf course. As far as "demo and mode" I like the idea of it being a dome, but it could be hidden in a dome, or maybe even a souvenir cup from the Metrodome. The possibilities, unfortunately, are still endless. There's also the possibility that there are some ulterior motives as to where the treasure is hidden. Last year, when it was in Como, it was Como Zoo's 100th anniversary. If they wanted to call attention to a particular area, this is a good way to do it. I know Norm Coleman would be very interested in drawing people downtown right now, so the capitol or maybe Mounds Park would have an edge in that sense. Edit MessageDelete Message

Historically, whenever they bring up a "stack" or "smoke in the skies" clue, it's some kind of reference to the NSP smokestack visible from several downtown area parks. Mounds should still be in the running, but Cherokee may have jumped into the picture again with its proximity to the stack and past ideas that Annapolis and/or Ottawa are "city streets." Plus, the line "you'll soon be back" may have been an indicator that they, in fact, are going against the usual pattern of repeating hiding places; it was last at Cherokee only 6 years ago. The mention of "track" always calls up railroad tracks (visible below Mounds). Edit MessageDelete Message

    David Allison - 11:57pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#879 of 8457)

A couple years ago I tried to make a complete list of all the places the treasure could be hidden. I can't claim to remember where these all are, but perhaps we can start a process of elimination.

  • Battle Creek Park
  • Como Park
  • Conway Heights
  • Dunning Field
  • Harriet Island
  • Highland Park
  • Horton Park
  • Irvine Park
  • Linwood Park
  • Merriam Terrace
  • Newell Park
  • Phalen Park
  • Stinson Park
  • Terrace Park
  • Langford Park
  • Rice Park
  • State Capitol
  • State Fairgrounds

I have to admit that I've never heard of Cherokee Park, though my map is a bit old. So let's start eliminating. Edit MessageDelete Message

I have been searching for the medallion since 1952 and have always been at the park! BUT I am still searching. We enjoy the carnival and all of the excitment it brings to St. Paul. My guess is Mounds or Cherokee. The smoke stack is either NSP or Pig's Eye. The train track run under both of the parks. Rosebud refers to the container and there is a La Rosa Pasta that has a large red rose as their signature! Both parks are on the river, have playgrounds, sliding hills, views of the cathedral and capital, and are scenic overviews.

I live in Highland and my guess is that it is not there even though it would be very close. Edit MessageDelete Message

I'm still assuming that track refers to a railroad. The parks that have railroads at least relatively near them are:

  • Battle Creek

  • Highland
  • Mounds
  • Newell
  • Phalen
  • Merriam Terrace
  • Langford
  • Cherokee Park (I figured it out where it was, thanks) Edit MessageDelete Message

    B.J. Mack - 12:18am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#904 of 8457)

It's looking more and more like Cherokee Heights Park. Here's the explanation:

--clue one: refers to the "lucky one." the First Bank ONE is visible from Cherokee. --clue two: water and woods: trees and the river. --clue three: good sledding hill, we used to go there when I was a kid. At Cherokee near the ballfield. --clue four: large object in view: NSP smokestack. The transposing of demo and mode equals "dome" and "dome"...the Capitol and Cathedral domes are visible from Cherokee --clue five: place to play equals ballfield. Check your map for three nearby "city" streets. --clue six: another reference to the NSP smokestack.

I've probably given away too much. See you out there on Friday night! Edit MessageDelete Message

    David Allison - 12:36am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#920 of 8457)

I could be wrong, but when they say its in a St. Paul park I'm interpreting that literally to mean within the city limits of St. Paul and in a park. Consequently I'm hoping its safe to rule past hiding places such as Roseville or West St. Paul, but that was an excellent posting nonetheless. Now assuming that it is by a railroad and has a street nearby named after a city, this leaves:

  • Como (Lexington)
  • Harriet Island (Nagasaki)
  • Highland (Montreal)
  • Mounds (Urban Place?)
  • Phalen (Arlington)
  • Merriam Terrace (Ann Arbor? Hard to tell on my map)
  • Cherokee (Annapolis)

I ruled out Battle Creek, Newell, and Langford, as well as Meares, because I couldn't find any streets with city names nearby. Correct me if I'm wrong. From this list I think its fairly safe to cross out Como and Harriet Island on the assumption they wouldn't hide it in the same place in such a short span of time. I've never been to Merriam Terrace but it looks to be in a flat part of town. Am I wrong? This leaves us more or less where we started with Highland, Mounds, Phalen, or Cherokee Park. Most of the "city streets" don't really have intersecting streets of note. Its more that they border on or cut right through the parks. The only exception is Urban Place which intersects Mound Blvd, but that seems like the weak link in the group. Edit MessageDelete Message

    Greg Sax - 12:48am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#928 of 8457)

greenslvs2: It's actually been 6 years since Cherokee; that would be a record for repeating but if you checked my post at #878, you'd see that I agree with the "soon be back" idea.

Other stuff...I think the La Rosa Pasta idea is clever, but off. If "Rosebud" has nothing to do with the sled, or the movie, or the word "rose" or "bud", then hunters will get angry. The Press listens when people complain. We want it to be difficult but not ridiculous. The best "Rosebud" theory I've heard for Mounds is Thorn Street. Other clues may lead to Urban Place, Suburban Avenue, the light tower, a visible playground, visible domes, and now the NSP stack. Granted, Cherokee meets several criteria, but there's that whole repetition thing that the Press might be hung up on. Edit MessageDelete Message

    David Allison - 12:50am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#931 of 8457)

I'm going to guess that Phalen is not it because the railroad goes through the Maplewood area of it. I also doubt that Mounds is it at this point because of the lack of good street names. I can't eliminate Highland yet, but Cherokee does border Harriet Island Park for you "soon be back" fans. Also, isn't it across the river from where the new Science Museum is going to be (in reference to my earlier ulterior motives posting)? Edit MessageDelete Message

Actually now that I see where Prospect is, it does border on a street named Chicago and is nominally close to the railroads and harriet island for that matter (being back soon). Its also on Delos St for those who believe in that interpretation, though I don't. Edit MessageDelete Message

The coolest part...only three people were there other than me!!! But my digits were freezing off. I'm going to be looking for that exact point..those two inches of snow...tomorrow. Snow Princess - I had that same feeling at Highland a couple of years ago. And that's where it turned out to be 2 clues later. I dug for a bit then joined the crowd thinking that I was off. Bad idea. When I seen that old folks home perched under the bridge crossing Montreal, it was like seeing the big 'W' on 'It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world'. Awsome! You should stick with it. You could kick yourself later if you don't. I was just up at Mounds too. I think I saw you. I was in a purple Blazer. Edit MessageDelete Message

For those of you not out and about, especially Mr. Sax, I was all over just now. About 75 - 100 people were up at Mounds. I checked Cheorkee, Prospect, Central, Capitol Grounds, Harriet Island, Rice, Kellogg and Como parks. Only 2 people at Cheorkee and none at the rest. Moderate digging in each park, though that's common for the locals of the surrounding neighborhoods to fit each clue to their park, and just fun to have an excuse to get out. It sure looks to be at Mounds. Edit MessageDelete Message

Hello treasure hunters: Way back at posting 409 I thought the clues pointed to Mounds. Now they may point to Cherokee. For Mounds I thought the "beacon" was the large structure to guide the way; but maybe it's the "Landmark" Brewery visible from Cherokee. The NSP smoke stack is certainly visible...quite a few city streets go into the park. I was talking with a treasure hunter at Mounds yesterday and he thought the anagram "dome" clue may actually mean that the treasure is hidden in a computer CD-ROM or disk--crack the code...duke Edit MessageDelete Message

Hey MKIA, greenslvs2, or Greg Sax,

I've been keeping up with most of the brainstorms the diggers have made, but there is one that I can't figure out. The city streets URBAN and SUBURBAN near Mounds Park. Is it because their terms and not actual "cities"? Looking for some help. Edit MessageDelete Message

    Desire-to-win - 08:19am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#969 of 8457)

Talked to several winners yesterday, they thought it was at Indina Mounds Park. Over 100 people have been there and dug it up. They said that the Rosebud was definitely a sled. However, could not make a connection. Edit MessageDelete Message

    Daniel Weiss - 08:21am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#970 of 8457)

One thing no one has noted is the mention of 'scenery'. The most striking impression one takes from Mounds Park is the view.

It's more probable than not that it is at Mounds. The 'Urban' and 'Suburban' connection is perfect, as is the tower for the airplanes.

And this is the biggie: The railroad tracks are directly beneath Mounds Park, whereas they are ACROSS THE RIVER at Cherokee, which would be too much of a stretch.

Bon chance, all! Edit MessageDelete Message

    Desire-to-win - 08:24am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#971 of 8457)

Where exactly is this Mounds Park? The first clue said it was in a St. Paul Park. Are you referencing Indian Mounds? Edit MessageDelete Message

    Daniel Weiss - 08:27am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#972 of 8457)

'Mounds' is a shortening of 'Indian Mounds Park'. It sits on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi, east of St. Paul. You can see it from Highway 52. Edit MessageDelete Message

    cold toes2 - 08:28am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#973 of 8457)

snowball2, i think they are comparing suburban ave, urban pl and burns, to anagrams like demo, mode and dome. Edit MessageDelete Message

    Desire-to-win - 08:29am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#974 of 8457)

Thanks, Dan. The only thing that doesn't fit at Indian Mounds is that there is no place for sledding. Edit MessageDelete Message

    greenslvs2 - 08:31am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#975 of 8457)

Snowball2: IMHO... "Urban" & "Suburban" don't cut it as both are types of areas, while "city" streets, i.e., "Annapolis," "Lexington," are streets around parks that have actual city names. Edit MessageDelete Message

    Daniel Weiss - 08:32am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#976 of 8457)

Really, there's no sledding hill. That's a problem, definitely.

It's at one of two parks, no doubt: Mounds or Cherokee. I'm heading out within the hour but still haven't decided where to.

But too much does fit at Mounds, and the 'zoom' might just be something other than sledding, no? Edit MessageDelete Message

    Desire-to-win - 08:35am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#977 of 8457)

City streets does not necessarily mean names of cities. This information comes from previous winners. They thought that the city streets meant that all the surrounding streets lead to the center of the park. However, you cannot dig at the top because of the fence. Edit MessageDelete Message

    Desire-to-win - 08:36am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#978 of 8457)

Zoom could also refer to airplanes zooming through the air. But where is the smoke coming from at Mounds? Edit MessageDelete Message

the smoke comes from the trains Edit MessageDelete Message

    Daniel Weiss - 08:39am Jan 30, 1998 CST (#981 of 8457)

Oh, man, the smoke is so very much the NSP smokestack, perfectly viewable from Mounds. PLUS, check out the clues for '87, when it was at Mounds, and you'll find something interesting. One of the clues makes reference to, get this, the Cathedral -- a dome if there ever was one. Edit MessageDelete Message
