Here is my closing paragraph in the e-mail I sent to Casey. Gives me goose bumps:

I have to believe an ongoing discussion on the Cooler is beneficial to the Planet because of the ideas that are expressed within this particular thread. In many ways, we are giving a little treasure back to the Press/Planet with the ideas we come up with. Relegating the thread to "Old discussions" would be counterproductive. I think if you have discussion groups on "What should we do with wolves?" and "The Academy Awards" there is room for a Cooler where people actually discuss ways to help the community and ways to increase visibility of a unique Pioneer Press tradition. Howdy from work. Any more thoughts on logo wear? Has anyone called the PP and demanded their logo wear? Edit MessageDelete Message

All: Think we may have missed the Schell bock hunt. Found an article (www.mankato.msus.ed/depts/reporter/reparchive/02_11_97/bock.html) that has no date in it, but see the date in the address... :(

However... Check it out. Basically The Re-Hash Bash is the same - a group of folks gathering in winter, pretending it's summer, and pigging out! I most definately think the Twin Cities is ready for a "Pioneer Planet Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt Re-Hash Bash." John J.: I'll be glad to cook dogs or dish up potato salad (LOL!) at next year's Bash if the PP puts it on. Just let me know what you want me to do/how I can help!!!

Found a Deer River Wild Rice Festival Medallion Hunt - on the 4th of July. Unfortunately, the page does not *say* just *where* Deer River is!!!!!!

Greg: Don't sweat the small stuff - you always show up when you can. That's the way we all have to do it. I *think* the "We Dig" was thrown out as name for us as a group separate from the PP - for parades, the NPO, etc. If the PP wants/is looking for a name for the acutal Cooler, I think they should go with PPMC, or something along those lines.

Jagged: Welcome back!!! Haven't seen you here since early on, tho caught your name in'a couple'a other Coolers. In the pics that will hit the PP - I'm thinking this coming Monday? - I'm the one in the white golf hat.

Which reminds me. All: When pics have been developed, lets get together for pizza or something and look at them!!

Will catch you all later! Edit MessageDelete Message

All - Just checked in during the lunch hour. Yes Greg, we are all catching up I think. Nice to know your still checking in. Thanks for the e-mail to Casey. Mega Goosebumps!!!

Jagged - have you signed Ian's guest book? Welcome back.

Green - Deer River is up north somewhere. We'll have to check a map.

Greg - Like your ideas for cooler discussion Should be PPM Hunters... Would be more inclusive to new folks finding us during the year.

Later.....work is calling me back. Kids is college - gotta work! Edit MessageDelete Message

Thank you for the hospitality Green and Terry. I must admit, I've been reading all along. Hard to get a word in edgewise, you guys are so clever.

Green: You'll have to let me know when the PP comes out with any pictures or stories. You see, I do not get the PP regularly.

Terry: Yes, I did sign the guest book. What a great website.

Thank you Ian for the work on that. Edit MessageDelete Message

To the Crew,

The Planet would like to help foster the online community you all have been building. Here are plans and possibilities:

1) I'm checking under Water Cooler's hood for ways to capture all the posts from this discussion. I'll let you know when I figure out something.

2) We've harvested the e-mail addresses from people participating in this discussion with an eye on creating a medallion-hunt-related listserve (e-mail mailing list). We'll tell more as soon as we establish how the listserve will be used and how to respect the privacy of those who own those e-mail addresses.

3) PioneerPlanet can donate web space from our InfiNet servers for a medallion hunt crew web page. (I have to get the final OK, but I think we can do it.) We can link to that page from PioneerPlanet and a Water Cooler discussion. Logistical details to consider: (A) Who's going to maintain said web page? and (B) I'm not sure InfiNet will allow the kind of scripting that creates guestbooks, etc.

4) Planning for Water Cooler and/or medallion hunt apparel is bubbling in the crafty minds of those at PioneerPlanet who create such things.

5) Finally, in a day or so I want to establish a general discussion area for the Water Cooler crew. My hope is that it can be general enough to draw in people who don't hunt but want to find some nice folks to shoot the breeze with, and yet specific enough to meet the needs of you treasure-huntin' fiends. (And of course, when it comes time for the hunt next year, we'll open up a special area in advance of the hunt.)

Whew! I hope you got through all that. Of course, your feedback and e-mails are welcome. Please let us know what we can do for you.

Cheers,

Casey Trauer

we need to be strategic to the point where the medallion next year will be found be one of the coolers in a week, by being organized and sending groups to different parks to look before the snow is compacted. but for next, as of now we can all go back to being slackers Edit MessageDelete Message

I have been working in the automotive service industry for the past 6 or 7 years. I have been having a hard time figuring out transfer of skills into a different field, due to the lack of opportunity in the car biz right now....so if anyone happens to know fo anything (spouses' best friend's cousin works with someone whose uncle's co. might be hiring???) ((shameless plug)), I have very good data entry skills, accounting experience; reconciliations, customer service experience, and I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with the rest of my life! Hi all. Back from choir practice. About getting .gifs for your picture... I went into a search engine (I like metacrawler) and searched on web clip art. I found a site with a bunch of free icons and stuff. I right clicked on the ones I liked and saved them in my hard drive (they're already the right format). Then I downloaded the software piece from the PP that they talk about in the preference section. If I remember right, it says something like I opened that, went to the gif file, then pasted it into the little box the PP gives you for a picture and voila! my little buzzing bee!

Green - I your little snow man. Wherever did you find him?

I'm just learning HTML and tried a little formatting in this post. Let's see if it works. I'm hitting post my message.... Edit MessageDelete Message

I did it! I've always wanted to be an old in a rocking chair, sitting on the back porch (President fans?), just saying what came to mind with no worries about "whom" I may offend!

E&H Mom-data entry? customer service? You may want to give me an email. I'm in the clinical lab biz, and we always need people with your talents. It's a good, stable. large co. with very, very good benes. No promises, let me know.

Is it morning already? What a short night. So much going on.....Where do I start? People are experimenting with icons.... have a few hundred GIF's from Virtual Places that are the perfect size. I also have links to many sites with GIF's to download. If interested, e-mail me.

Wondering if Greg has any input/interest concerning the newest developments, especially our web page.

CASEY: I'm interested in the e-mail list. I have a list of maybe 25, and Greg has a list, but a detailed one would be nice. I am interested in the text version of this board, also.

Thanks to John and Lem, who made the trip to a Cherokee Park picnic in winter, for listening to, and believing in, a bunch of treasure hunting nuts.

Thanks to three Cooler Heads who went public with their breakfast plans, and found a lot of hungry people who would go to a picnic in a park which looked like a battlefield.

I'm thinking about the past, and looking to the future........IAN Edit MessageDelete Message

It seems like everyone has moved to nightspeak. I always intend to but I've been doing so much webbin' at the job that I can't bring myself to turn the home 'puter on. Since it looks like the afternoon's mine, I'll take the microphone:

All: This has become quite the animated .gif alley. At the risk of boos and catcalls, I don't think I like it here as much with all the eye candy. It's quite distracting. Boooo, hisssss..... ;^)

All: Obviously, I'm pleased with all that's happened in the past couple of days. However, I think it's time to chill on that issue and harness our excitement a little bit. The last thing we want to do is become annoying to Mother Pioneer. They've indicated that they dig us and appreciate what we are doing so let's not push it. I don't think we're close to reaching that point now, but a gentle reminder at this point may be in order.

Ian & BeeyoB: I've been hangin' in the background on the web page issue because I didn't want to stir the flavor out of it. Too many cooks spoil the stew and all that... But if you're offering, I'd like to be involved on that side of things. Here's the thing though (and this may be what keeps me on the side rather than in front of this project), I'm particular about design and content. I create and edit books and web pages for a living so I'm fairly no-nonsense. I'm creative and I like fun stuff (I think that's obvious by now) but extra noise just gets on my nerves (e.g., excessive images, animation (unless tastefully done), poor use of frames, excessive outside links). You get the picture -- I'm anal retentive about that which I create. You can have good content or a good design, but I firmly believe that if you don't have both you don't have anything worth looking at. So with that, I put it in your court. You were on this before me, so I'll understand if you just want some background support rather than the whiz-bang shebang of it all.

Whether you want my extensive involvement or not, here's some opinions about what I think should be covered:

There's room for several more ideas, but the focus should be self-centered with a hook. Our main hook is as "a complete guide to the Pioneer Press medallion hunt" and our follow-up hooks are information about national (international?) hunts of a similar nature. I think it would be nice to go national to draw more attention to our efforts, plus it would give me something to do research on.

And, finally, I know for a fact that the Schell Bock Beer Festival has not yet happened. I'm sorry I haven't followed up on this, but I keep forgetting to bring my article to work. I promise I'll go online tonight from home.

Microphone off....drink of water....back to work.... Edit MessageDelete Message

I've recently moved to a new server at work and will not be able to send e-mail until Friday p.m. I've had a friend send the following to me at home, and will resend via e-mail to all I can think of tonite. But in the meantime, here's a copy-and-paste job.

    To: TC-TCMPERM Nancy Stephan/TC-TCM/3M/US@3M-Corporate Tom W. Neal/TC-TCM/3M/US@3M-Corporate Shanna M. Eilek/TC-TCM/3M/US@3M-Corporate Lori B. Neubauer/TC-TCM/3M/US@3M-Corporate Tom C. Gilmore/TC-TCM/3M/US@3M-Corporate Jenny L. Blomgren/TC-TCM/3M/US@3M-Corporate cc: Subject: Virus Information

The following information is being circulated:

WARNING! If you receive an e-mail titled, "JOIN THE CREW", do not open it! It will erase EVERYTHING on your hard drive. Send this letter out to as many people you can..this is a new virus and not many people know about it.

This information was received this morning from IBM, please share it with anyone that might access the Internet.

Also, if anyone receives mail entitled, "PENPAL GREETINGS!", please delete it WITHOUT reading it! This is a warning for all Internet users. There is a dangerous virus propagating across the Internet through an e-mail message entitled "PENPAL GREETINGS!"!!

DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY MESSAGE ENTITLED "PENPAL GREETINGS"!! this message appears to be a friendly letter asking you if you are interested in a penpal, but by the time you read this letter, it is too late. The Trojan Horse Virus will have already infected the boot sector of your hard drive, destroying all of the data present.

It is a self-replicating virus, and once the message is read, it will AUTOMATICALLY forward itself to anyone whose e-mail address is present in YOUR mailbox.

The virus will DESTROY your hard drive and holds the potential to DESTROY the hard drive of anyone whose mail is in your mailbox and who's mail is in their mailbox and so on. If this virus keeps getting passed, it has the potential to do a great deal of DAMAGE to computer networks worldwide!!!

Please delete the message entitled "PENPAL GREETINGS!!" as soon as you see it! And pass this message along to all of your friends, relatives and the other readers of the newsgroups and mailing lists, which you are on so that they are not harmed by this dangerous virus!

Please pass this along to everyone you know so this can be stopped.

PASS THIS ON TO YOUR FRIENDS. WARNING!!!! This is a new virus going around in the last couple of days! DO NOT open or even look at any mail that you get that says: "Returned or Unable to Deliver". This virus will attach itself to your computer components and render them useless.

Immediately delete any mail items that say this. AOL has said this is a very dangerous virus, and there is NO remedy for it at this time. Please be careful, and forward to all your on-line friends A.S.A.P.

Greensleeves: Khan's Mongolian BBQ is one of my FAVORITE places to eat! Especially on Wednesdays and Sundays when they have crab on the buffet, too! Did you go to the one in Roseville or the one in Richfield? I've eaten at both but the one in Roseville is closer to my house. Maybe our group could meet there.

Greg Sax: It's interesting to see that you do web pages for a living. Maybe I could get you to look at mine and tell me what you think of it and give me some suggestions. Maybe later instead of now. Right now I know it's pretty crummy because I haven't had time to work on it lately but after I work on it some more, then it shouldn't look quite as bad as it does now. Dave Young: We went to the one in Roseville. I'm not as fond of that type of cusine as you are <g>, but really enjoy the atmosphere. My friend had never been (I'd been years ago to the orig in, what was it, Dinkytown?) so, agreed to eat there. Would have loved to have had lamb, but they don't put it out for lunch... SAW about the scallops and crab... OH!!! Would have KILLED for some!!!!

Don't know where we'll end up for a get together to look at all the pics. Prolly a central location for us all. Could be anywhere, don't know, but we'll see what others think of Khan's, for sure, for sure!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

SueBee, it was issued - that warning - from my corporate headquarters, to me at work. It was not a letter that was sent to me from a friend or someone like that. And it was not a forwarded message. It's just exactly the way the author wrote it. Don't quote me, but I think we've people that are always contacting companies that do virsus stuff - on the lookout for, etc.

And... about four weeks ago, on AOL, I *did* receive a "not able to send message" from some weird name. And I'd not sent anything to anybody. Thank god I had the sense not to let curiosity get the better of me! Edit MessageDelete Message

    Greg: Really good input.

If you'd like, I'll be glad to call Schell's tomorrow and get info on "who, what, where, when, why, how much" for the Bock hunt and then post it here.

Now that we don't have to scramble for finding a way to have a Web page, etc. (Thanks, Casey!), we can sit back, really look at things and then dig in!

Regarding getting together to re-hash the Re-Hash Bash and look at pics of the event, there's no hurry. How's this: We give the PP folks time to digest and work on the ideas we've thrown out, one of which is logoed wear, as Casey mentioned. Then when they've let us know what they've accomplished/done/have we set a date and include them!!!! They've pics, too, that would be neat to see. Plus, they can bring the logoed wear and we bring $'s for it!!!

I'll be glad to handle setting this up if you want. I do need ideas about where, though. I was thinking... The Vulcans have *their* place, and the Saint's folks have Gabe's... Some instituion in/around St. Paul??? Ideas??? Thoughts???

Lot's of what we're to be about will have to wait, I think, until more info is received back from the PP. And it will come. In the meantime we can gather here and keep pondering things.

Regarding next year's 'Bash: from what John Jordan said, I think we should just plan an event like the First 'Bash. Only... figure out ways to get more people to come - like Greg said, there's prolly a bunch of folks out there that don't have computers that would LOVE to re-hash all their years of digging. Hummmmm.... wonder if there's some way we could contact past winners? Even via snail-mail... Invite them, tell them about it?

Just more thoughts!!! Hope to see you tonite, Greg!!! We've really missed you!!! Edit MessageDelete Message
