Yes, Hubby and kids will be coming on Sunday. It's so cute - I can hear him putting the 3 yr old to bed (emmy) she's reading him the story (no she can't really read, but she has one heckuva memory - word for word)! I'll be happy to supply fake cups and silverware. Edit MessageDelete Message

Thanx for the book info desire-to-win but I know about that one already. What I was talking about was the book by Kirk D. and Lori that has the clues from '52 to '87 printed in it.

Speaking of books...if you just can't get enough of the medallion hunt now that it's over, go to your local library and do a search for "The Treasure Hunt" by Roger Barr. The hunt is a backdrop for what is actually a pretty serious story about several groups of hunters that are all battling some serious life issues. Roger makes plenty of references to St. Paul, enough so that you'll definitely know of some places he's talking about (Gabe's wasn't so evident to me though). It's not really a book to read to the kids at bedtime, but it's well conceived and worth a read -- especially for those STILL hanging around here.

Also, if you're feeling frisky for another search in the snow, the Bock Beer Festival on the grounds of the Schell Brewery in New Ulm is coming up. I went in '96 and had a great time. Unfortunately, I missed the search for the wooden "bocks" that they plant around their land but I had plenty of Schells and enjoyed myself immensely. If anyone's interested, post a message and I'll give more info. Edit MessageDelete Message

Just chips and nametags. That's not so much. Paper plates are only about a buck. no prob. Guess I'll go do my taxes - fun fun fun. I'll check back in later. Green, you're amazing. You've already called companies about PPMCC wear?? WOW! Edit MessageDelete Message

Crap and double crap.

Got your e-mail, but not understanding it. I'll copy the purrson at the address you sent when The Bash is over with all the stuff off here about logoed-wear... plus my ideas for this coming year.

I'm thinking to start small - like a white knit cap - so that the PP doesn't have to dish out a bunch of bucks for a bunch of different items. Plus, we can hang all our buttons - WC, and "YOU DIG?" - on it.

Then as the year(s) go by, maybe adding/changing what is offered for sale each year. Of course, all must be offered here to THE WAY COOLER HEADS first before going on sale go gen pub.

But, anyway, I'll be approaching Casey to find out whom to contact... but... AFTER THE BASH. Gotta get that taken care of first.

Folks, we're ALL in on the birth of a tradition... Hope you're aware of that. Hey!!! Some silly had to have a wild hair to get the Vulcans going!!! Soon people will be talking about the "PPMCC" and how they dig with their mouses and minds, in addition to shovels!!!

HAIL COOLER HAND LUKE! Edit MessageDelete Message

Sax, just did the Summit brew tour last weekend. Yeah, it cut into our hunt time, but...Anyway, we had such a good time that we decided to tour somewhat local breweries on a regular basis. The next stop? Linnies in Ws. Any takers? The rules are if you partake in the bev, you get a room for the night. Somewhat like our canoe trips during the summer. I have this feeling that I just started 10th grade and have a new set of friends! Joe's not invited though. Edit MessageDelete Message

greenslvs2 - 09:00pm Feb 5, 1998 CST (#7653 of 8458)

Beeyob!!! LOL!!! Done Schells, waiting to do Lienne's!! This will have to fall in somewhere with the Saints game... Which reminds me... We need logoed-wear ("PPMCC") prior to that so that we can all wear it to the game. Yea. Thinking about getting a group (of us Headers) to go. NOT MY ORIGIANL IDEA. But way past the posting of who's it was. I'm sure they'll speak up. They better. NOT MY IDEA. May have been New Daddy's. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 09:07pm Feb 5, 1998 CST (#7654 of 8458)

Terry: Why does it have to be Word 7.0? Is formatting important? What e-mailer are you using? Attachments are fairly easy from the Netscape mailer. I could walk you through anything similar to that. If 7.0 is difficult for other reasons, do a "Save As" and make it one of 3 things: a Word 6.0 (.doc), a rich-text (.rtf) or a straight ASCII text (.txt). Use the .txt only if formatting is not important. Hope this helps. Edit MessageDelete Message

Ok, so we got....brewery tours, Saints games, canoe trips, logo-ed casual wear, logo-ed buttons, a cooler color. Could you guys (*very*deap breath) imagine if we found the damn thing?? Oh My God! Where would it end? The New Ford Medallion Edition F150 Pick Up? Cooler Club Medallion Breakfast Cereal(w/real medallion clues in every box)? The possibilities are endless..... if only...... next year! Edit MessageDelete Message

on the hunt

It's good to see some of you still hanging around... Not that I like to wish my life away, but does anyone else wish it was about January 25th, 1999? When I seen the exact description of the medallion location last night, I almost cried. When the Yellowstone clue came out, I got to Wyoming and Cherokee after about 1000 others were there. I decided that just to dig aimlessly in the snow was not something I felt like doing that night, as I had done it every other for the last 5. So I walked around with my industrial garden tool collection looking for something that served more as a marker than anything else. I had my mag-light and my clue printouts and I found a spot that as it turned out was no more than 5-10 feet of the burial place. I unfortunately didn't give the digging my all and soon decided to search elsewhere. Had I put in a half hour more of digging I may have been the lucky one.

The moral of the story and of my life, personally: NEVER quit and NEVER second guess yourself... I hope to see you all Sunday, I will try my best to get out there. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 09:16pm Feb 5, 1998 CST (#7658 of 8458)

BeeyoB: What do you mean "get a room for the night"? Been to Leinie's but not on the tour. I have cousins in Chippewa so you may get a taker here. It'd give me a reason to visit. The best tour I've EVER been on is right here in Milwaukee (imagine that). It's called the Lakefront Brewery and you will never forget it, it's that good. Check their web for more info: www.lakefront-brewery.com. Also, has Summit moved to their new digs yet or are they still on University?

emmy & hannah's mom: Love the "You dig?" logo. Will try to emulate it for the "official." Will also get more on the Bock Fest in just a second... Edit MessageDelete Message

Cheers to the entrep's out there- kind of like us diggers, huh? "Get a Room" means that if you do a beer tour 150 miles away from home, it's: #1) Not a good idea to drive home, and #2) A good choice to continue the beer talk, and beer consumption. Keep in touch. Thats good Ian... It will help greatly if you can keep us informed throughout the course of this year, leading up to next years burial date. I hope MCTO is ready for the crew. Hacking a shovel through the floor of a bus will be easy compared to digging in that crap that was at Cherokee towards the end.

Another cooler idea for product would be a cooler calendar with some kind of cool "clues" on each month meaning something about that month and of course special medallion dates and historical medallion dates and info. The pictures would be really cool. Edit MessageDelete Message

greenslvs2 - 09:43pm Feb 5, 1998 CST (#7672 of 8458)

Ah, boyo, would be nice, wouldn't it? However, I think not. It, The Hunt, is over. I think their mind is on better things. Like... ah, well... on... Well. I'm sure they're not interested in bunch of goofs out having a picnic in the snow. But, you never know!! Great idea!!! And wouldn't it be nice if the PPMCC was recognized???? Kind'a make everybody happy and all. I like your thinking - I even had the same idea. But, well, like... What's to see/report on a bunch of maniac diggers celebrating the past hunt and the anticipation of next years??? We didn't win, did we? So, we'll have a great time getting to know each other and reliving The Hunt as we all experienced it. No big deal... but to us guys. But that's all that counts, rite?

BUT THERE'S NEXT YEAR!!! This year, we'll just celebrate us all getting together, getting to know each other... and lay our traps for The Clue(less) One next year!!! LOL!!! He's NOT going to beat all us guys two years in a row!!! HAIL COOLER HAND LUKE!!! COOLER HEADS WILL PREVAIL!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Nice chatting with you, hopefully talk to you Sunday if not sooner... BTW that picture that always accompanies my posts is Captain William D. Bowell of the Padelford Packet Boat Co. on Harriet Island. He is at the helm of the Padelford. Im not a fan of the guy himself, other than his ludicrous and idiotic antics, combined with a general nasty demeanor, and hate for his neighbors at the No Wake Cafe, make him a very funny person to observe. And oh man, the stories are great! Maybe thats more than you wanted to know, but I just wanted to let you know that that isnt me. Later all. Edit MessageDelete Message

Hey, Terry, you still on... If you are, check your e-mail. I wrote you a novella.

This is my favorite time on the Cooler. Usually I have to wait until about 2 a.m. to get it to myself, but now that the lines are nonexistant at the Press building, now that Cherokee only holds a few snoring squirrels and perhaps a lone forlorn digger that has yet to read a paper, and now that the Cooler junkies are catching the ZZZs they so desperately deserve, I have the floor for a soliloquy...

...or do I? Edit MessageDelete Message

I'm not sure if this number still works, but hopefully it hasn't changed since '96...call (507) 354-5528. It isn't the medallion hunt, but it is a good time and a nice cooldown from the big hunt. It was a really strange scene at Cherokee Park at 6:00 pm. About four hours earlier, the blue puck had been found. I'm sure that as the news spread, the park cleared out rather fast. When I arrived, to get a look at the "magic" spot,I was hit with the ultimate in contrasts. For the previous five days, I had accepted the cars, the crowd, the noise...THIS shocked me. A couple cars on Chippewa Ave. and about 8 people at "the spot". Vacant, quiet, eerie...Piles of frozen, chopped, ice/snow/grass/dirt/branches/etc...The only thing I can compare it to is the movie "Woodstock"...at the end when you see the empty, trashed field that a day before had been a vibrant, lively scene...Kinda sad, but the Park will recover and on Sunday February 8th a new tradition will begin...I'll be with you in spirit...PEACE.. Hey there ATBFontana - how are ya? Are you named after D.C. Fontana - frequent writer for and supposed co-creator of the original Star Trek?

Or are you an anagram for BATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms)? The Michigan Militia referred to BATF as BATFAG (apparently FA for firearms but I haven't figured out what the G is for).

Are you a FAG pal? Do you bugger young boys? Did you ever get greased in prison? Tell me your sad tale and you may get some sympathy... Edit MessageDelete Message

Fontana: Usually I don't get into this with the people who post just to cut us down, but things have slowed down and I truly am curious about something. Maybe you'd be willing to answer these:

Why do you log into this Cooler?
Why don't you like the people hanging in it?
If your reason is because we're pathetic loser nerds, then why waste time on us?

I'm not passing judgement on you. I just really want to know. Take it easy. Edit MessageDelete Message

Does the medallion hunting team at the Pioneer Press have a list of all possible parks the medallion could be in? That would be a big help in the future. I always wonder if some of those rec centers are fair game or not. I'd love to get a list. Also, where are the 1990 clues on the 'last 10 years of hunts'?

HEY, ALL: I'm really working on those buttons for Sunday. I had everything all nice and set up and then the floor dropped out on me today. The design is ready but I no longer have a place to make them. There's a Kinko's here in Milwaukee that makes them with a 24-hour turnaround so I just assumed I could find one in the Twin Cities that had the same deal, but no dice. Not one Kinko's in the Cities makes buttons. So if any of you want to do me a BIG favor and save me some long-distance money, try this:

  • Grab a yellow pages and look up "Buttons - Advertising."
  • Find a place that looks like it specializes in small orders and is computer-friendly.
  • And (here's the kicker), one that can finish a 40-50 button order by tomorrow for under $100.

The sooner the better...please post results if you get a bite. Give a phone number and I'll take care of the rest. Edit MessageDelete Message

As for me, I didn't dig anywhere near the "find site." I know I stepped over it, but I was convinced that it was somewhere down the hill, between Annapolis and Wyoming. Lot's of references, I thought, to the ball park, so I didn't dig much on the hill. Edit MessageDelete Message

    davidm - 01:32pm Feb 6, 1998 CST (#7726 of 8458)

I have also been hanging on the fringe here with just 2 previous messages, but I agree with Goldfish Gal--would love to hear more about folks' hunt experiences and stories--this year or past. Along with 500 other people, we were at Chippewa and Wyoming on Tues nite/Wed. a.m. We did move a bit further into the park before we left, but I don't think we ever got super close. (@ least I HOPE not!)

Nonetheless, what a fun hunt, and what great weather! Best weather since 93 @ Hidden Falls. I'm still trying to explain the allure of this hunt to some non-St. Paul (and non-Minnesota) folks but they just don't get it. I'll always be addicted. As the old saying goes, "You can take the boy out of the East Side, but you can't take the East Side out of the boy!" Here's hoping for Phalen in 1999! Edit MessageDelete Message

WOW!!!! You guys have been busy, busy, busy! Sorry I disappeared 4-awhile. I had major presentations and meetings yesterday:(

Since I haven't been on since Wednesday, just want to warn any of you who haven't seen CP in day-light. It is a very, very desolate looking place. It looks like someone "snowblowed" the whole place.

The weirdest part is when I come home at night. No cars, no lights, no chopping sounds, no people milling around. The neighbors on Chippewa are probably glad. But I kind of miss all the action:(

Can't wait until Sunday to re-hash....... Edit MessageDelete Message

I'll tell you guys, then bug outta here for a minute as I've GOT to post this in the Clinton Cooler!!!

When you sign on AOL, all these boxes come up for you to click on if you wish - weather, shopping, DigitalCities... and the most recent headline news.

Well... In one box called "Top News Story" or something like that, it reads:

    "CLINTON CALLS PROBE LEAKS UNLAWFUL"

    I CAN'T QUIT LAUGHING!!!!!!!

Guess that will change soon, tho. (sigh) :(

C: Thought about it. But didn't have anybody to go with. Was thinking if a WAY COOL COOLERPHILE won, you, Hubs, me, and anybody else I could cabbage on to here would go and we'd kind'a "crash" the parade in our Cooler dress and walk along side the float/car. But, nobody won... and I didn't have anybody to go with. Tho if I had, I'd a worn my PPMCC hat: "PPMCC MEMBER/I'M WAY COOLER'UN YOU/HAIL COOLER HAND LUKE! and kind'a skulked along after the PPMW float...

Top Ten Excuses To Why I Didn't Find The Medallion This Year:

    10. Spent too much time at the frog pond.

    9. Went to Egypt (clue 8) but couldn't find the snow.

    8. The metal detector failed me again!

    7. I gave up after I found out the winner would get dough instead of cash this year. (clue 7)

    6. I was having too much fun on the CP playground.

    5. I was waiting for an 'X marks the spot' clue.

    4. I had too much fun watching everybody else slave away at CP for nothing.

    3. Spent too much time browsing the Cooler.

    2. I didn't want my name in the paper anyway.

    1. Oh yeah… Pioneer Press employees aren't eligible.

See ya next year! Edit MessageDelete Message

Don't hold your breath, C. We're not messin' with the PP on the TLP business... That's the Association, or whatever. They may not be as receptive. Also, we DO NOT, IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM wanna bring a bad lite on the PP. Nope. Nada. Be careful..... We want to be respected... We don't want people running screaming into the nite at the mention of our name... PPMCC. And as long as that "PP" is in front... well... If we're gonna associate with them, we gotta toe the line(s).

But.... it NEVER hurts to try. Just be gracious... and say, "Well, thank you for listening to me."
