If I were as evil as the creator of this hunt is, and there wasn't a lot of snow at the time, I think I would put it in some crevice, fill it with water, and let it freeze thereby making it indistinguishable from all the other ice around. Edit MessageDelete Message

Well, if I'm going to make it out of bed at the crack of dawn with hubby's alarm, I'd best be getting some sleep. I just hope it wakes me up. I was used to getting up at 4:30 every day, but just got laid of a few weeks back, (boy would $3000 be nice!), and I don't think I've heard an alarm since! Edit MessageDelete Message

No go, but updates to follow. If we don't check in, then assume we got tired/cold/drunk(?)/bored/confused/battsdead. Until Weds AM? We'll let you know if anything comes up, down, etc. Everything in life has turned into a clue. Edit MessageDelete Message

Amy Trandahl - 01:16am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6756 of 8458)

if I were the "evil" creator, i would keep it in my pocket and go hang out at cherokee tonight and watch the poor suckers dig the poor suckers like me! i'm sure the guy who knows is out there and thinking "ohhhh! a little to the left, one more scoop! oh, your right in top of it! Edit MessageDelete Message

David Allison - 01:17am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6757 of 8458)

Oh well. I guess if I don't have the ambition to go out there I might as well just go to bed now and read about it in the morning. I'm still going to make the wild guess its hidden in a Minnesota Twins souvenir cup. Edit MessageDelete Message

Actually I wonder if the Pioneer Press has a spy out there, watching, waiting. How else would they know if you waited more than 20 minutes. Keep an eye out for suspicious lollygaggers. Edit MessageDelete Message

What's a sugary loaf and a yellow stone? Edit MessageDelete Message

Cheryl Straight - 01:22am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6760 of 8458)

okay, IMO, Emma and Hannah's mom is dead on. Met my hubby at Winona State (plus spent 16 years of my life just south of there). IT'S at *WINONA*, the Sugar Loaf is up on the bluff at the NorthWest corner of HWY 61 and 43 (road to Witoka), anyway I am digressing...The Stone is huge!!!! looks lika a big sugar lump and it is YELLOW. It is a huge landmark that all the "locals" would know about, it's even lit up at night.

Personnally don't think it is down towards Wyoming. Wyoming with yellowstone park isn't *local*.

Live just off the park, but don't recall the "Zone sign", however there are other playing field Zones (Besides strike zone, and Zone defense in basketball, there is an end Zone in Football.

Remember as kids, selecting objects as the end zones for football, yes I am female, But played hard! I truly believe you need to line up the 3 pyramids and the large object/stack and look between the trees.

Sorry so long, but have to get some zzzz's and Desparately want a cooler to find it. Edit MessageDelete Message

WrightWinger, it was great seeing you at the park. I felt guilty not having anything white on to id myself. Say hi to your dad - sure we will run into him up on the West Side (and i feel the best side) Edit MessageDelete Message

Cheryl Straight - 01:28am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6764 of 8458)

If you aren't needing some sleep, the sight at the park is other worldly. Looking around, you'd think you were in a coal mine. The Devo song working in a coal mine popped into my head (oops, dating myself). It is almost eerie out there. Hubby and I dug for an hour or so, the going is slow, bring choppers/picks. Just returned from Cherokee. It is quite a sight. Saw a couple of WC's walk past us. Still found people down at the other end of the park. Do they not get the next clue before hunting? Seems so odd. Having some hot chocolate with hubby then going to bed. The alarm goes off early and the day is busy. Hope to be back out to the park mid afternoon if I can clear my schedule a bit. Hope a Way Cool Bandana finds it if we don't. Peace Edit MessageDelete Message

I was the one filming you people who were out there. Love the Sugar Loaf thing leading to Winona. Perfect! If you've ever been there before you'll know. Snow zone looks good as well. Stupid me read it once and I was stuck on "Surgery Loaf"!! What the hell is Surgery Loaf? I've been up for WAY TO MANY HOURS. Edit MessageDelete Message

Have seen the twinkie thing while I've been slogging through the posts since 11:30. Could be. It doesn't matter what it's in now. Whatever someone digs up should be searched through. It'll probably be so clear when the explanations come out. Edit MessageDelete Message

Just got back from CP. Although I've been digging for several years I've never been out at night before. "Other worldly" is a good approximation. Acres of lanterns and votives, the muffled "shoop shoop" of a hundred simultaneous diggers, the cold, the warmth of laughter and shouts and hollers, the dogs running between the clustered teams.

I'm not from around here originally (from NY). Tonight I knew I landed in the right place. Passing seemingly normal people on the streets of St Paul, I now know the truth.

Love you all, doodledog Edit MessageDelete Message

Ben Hunting - 01:49am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6779 of 8458)

Just got back from CP, the kids won't be "zoom"ing any more this year. Looks like most people are giving up for the night. Saw some poor sucker digging around a phone pole on Smith and george. The night might not be a complete waste some guy from the paper took our picture, maybe it will be in the paper tommarow. Well it sounds like my coffee is done so I'm heading back out to the trenches. Thanks for the hint about the yellow stone Cheryl I'm going to move up that way, if that is the solution they sure are making it hard this year. I'll stop rambling now. Edit MessageDelete Message

Doodledog...How long has it been since you landed here? I've always lived here. It's nice to see your description of the scene at CP. We were out till just a while ago. It's why I like night digging. You got to be there to appreciate it. Night all. Edit MessageDelete Message

I just returned from CP as well. It was quite interesting. I was digging by the hill near Wyoming and then headed for the car. As I walked, a woman with about 4 teeth, and fewer IQ points said she thought it was rapped in a twinkie wrapper because of the sugary loaf thing. I wanted to ask her if she ever heard of Yellowstone National Park, but thought against it. You just wonder why some people are out there.

By the way, the hint is spelled right in the web page, so I have to assume the paper was a typo. Edit MessageDelete Message

Jake836 - 01:54am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6786 of 8458)

We just got back from digging, we picked up the clue at 11:00 from the Pioneer Press. We just noticed that our clue is different from the one posted on the net. Instead of saying "sugary loaf" ours say's "Surgary loaf" So we did some digging and our trusty encyclopedia came up with some mountain top in Rio De Janiero. Let's talk about frustrating!!!! PS--I've often referred to St. Paul as NY without the New Yorkers (that's a complement). I've spoken to mayor Norm (from Brooklyn) and he agrees! Edit MessageDelete Message

Lee Christenson - 02:00am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6792 of 8458)

There is a yellow stone wall at the entrance of cherokee and smith street. There are also 3 pine trees which could be shaped like pyramids. The smoke stack is visible and so are tracks.I have really enjoyed meeting so many people this year, having good clean fun wrecking the park. Never heard a harsh word, but of course everyone was heavily armed with some serious looking weapons. Going to soak now in hot water to warm up, and play something easy like RIVEN. God bless everyone. Edit MessageDelete Message

What about the word 'fame' in the latest clue? We've been at CP for 5 nights, we were with the hundreds of people off of Wyoming. We were close but we are missing something. I don't think it's in the baseball field but it's really close. I think the word fame has something to do with it. Edit MessageDelete Message

Thanks doodledog. I have always lived in St. Paul - no suburbs for me. Like the city. Not crazy for Mpls. I always get lost there. Too many numbers, alphabetized streets. It took a while to get the sugary loaf thing, but the masses seem to think it's a Babe Ruth (baseball, candybar) reference. The yellow stone most thought pointed to Wyoming st. But there are plenty of interpretations out there. Don't quite know what to think now. Edit MessageDelete Message

SueBee - 07:34am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6837 of 8458)

Don't know if it means the med is between wyoming and annapolis somewere near or in the ball diamond, or if the Winona idea really holds water. Seems like the Winona thing would be a bit to obscure for this late in the game. They need to print something that most people would know. Edit MessageDelete Message

I was looking for the cooler crew last night but only ran into jake836 in line for the paper at about 10:30. Drove by where I thought the foundation was but didn't see anyone. Deb, HollyWood - were you there?? I stopped by the bonfire around 9 and watched two guys throwing cinders from the fire at each other. Joked about how when he caught on fire we'd all throw snow chunks at him to put him out and find the medallion when the snow chunk broke in two off his head. Sorry for the rambling... I'm tired. READ #8268 - THE WIZARD SPEAKS!

SueBee: I was at the bonfire around 9PM last night, too! Saw the two little boys drinking and playing with fire - stuff like that pulls the average IQ of medallion hunters down. Were you the one from Lino Lakes? I am hooked on this hunt, but I don't get much opportunity to search - job demands are high right now; so little time, so much snow! Good luck to you in the search! Not likely Clue Less! Go to Chippewa Ave. between Wyoming and Winona get out of your car! Walk towards the River and on the side of the hill in right field. You Must be in fair territory to ( stay in the game). S-o-o-o in the right field (zone) go up the sugary loaf ( hill) until you can just see the tops of the restrooms (pyramids) rise out of the snow. Start to dig cause at that spot every other clue fits and is in sight.!!!!!!!!!! If you are still clueless after this, I will have to take you by the hand and lead you there! But that wouldn't be fair!!!!! THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT A HUNT!!!!!!!! Generally he is a lazy guy, no more than 40 paces from the road! Edit MessageDelete Message

Long post starting!

Medallion--

Clue explanations then explanation of where to find it.

Clue #1 and #2 just lead to a general park

Clue #3 gives you a sledding hill

Clue #4 gives you the NSP stack and Cathedral dome

Clue #5 gives you city streets (Annapolis, Wyoming, Winona etc...)

Clue #6 gives you the NSP stack agian and the "back" puts you on the back or north side of sledding hill

Clue #7 gives you the double division being Annapolis

Clue #8 gives you the three pyramid shaped roofs over bathrooms

Clue #9 gives you the name of the park as Cherokee

Clue #10 gives you Chippewa St.

Clue #11 gives you Winona AND Wyoming. Locals of Winona claim Sugar Loaf and locals of Wyoming claim Yellow Stone. Zone gives you the emergency zone sign that was knocked over but would have been placed in the right spot.

There is a spot on the back side of the sliding hill between Wyoming St. and Winona St. (It is directly across Chippewa St from a brick house, the third one down from I think winona (the northern one of the two?)) It is also directly in line with a large tree that when standing on the spot and looking at the house blocks out the garage. When standing on the spot the NSP stack is just to the left of the 3 pyramids, the Cathedral dome is in the crevice between the left and middle pyramid and the spires on the cathedral are in the crevice between the middle and right pyramid. I have deliberated every clue and every word and this spot is the point to which I come and every new clue points to the spot as well.(never got my hands on a shovel to look myself) Look for it there and you will find the medallion! Thanks to all the cooler-philes have fun digging today and tonite and don't forget to mention the water cooler when you get your interview!! Edit MessageDelete Message

I agree with OZ. It seems like every year it's found by some fool on his lunch break, walking through the park without a shovel, ice scraper, or even gloves. I just got back from the park after digging all night and morning. The park has been dug thru thoroughly and I can't believe no one has found it. So I've come to the following conclusions.

1. They haven't dropped it yet

2. They put it next to the curb between winona and wyoming and let that guy plow 5 feet of snow over it.

3. They didn't put it in anything; just set it on the ground by itself

Oh well I guess we will find out in under 14 hours. Edit MessageDelete Message

This is my take on what I've been able to "steal" from the H.D. Coolers. The locals in the last clue are Minnesotans that have claim to the Sugar Loaf of Yellow Stone in Winona as opposed to the non-locals which would claim those same landmarks in Wyoming. Other than that, my goal this year is to be the guy who just shows up and finds the thing. Sorry to day it, but I've burned myself out many a hunt by going on all night digging sprees like a "true" hunter early in the game only to be at home and exhausted by the last clue or two. Here's an alternate interpretation:

#11) It's between Baker (claim a sugary loaf) and King (claim's gold - yellow stone).

#10) Cape and Whip (rearranged to read Chippewa) - is not recommended. It's not along Chippewa Ave

#9) Unlock the Door (Key), runs a committee (chair) - It's along Cherokee Ave

#8)through #1) Just identifies the park where the med. is at.

Could the zone be between Baker and King streets along Cherokee Ave.?? Edit MessageDelete Message

Hi all, I just drove home from the park to warm up a little ( and use the facilities!). I'm a firm believer that our last clue refers to Winona. I spent a lot of time on the sidewalk at Winona and Chippewa. But then I remembered that they would NOT recommend that attire, so I proceeded away from Chippewa, but stayed in line with Winona. The hill goes down just a little as you go toward Cherokee Hts. I turned around to see 3 pyramids - just the tops. Amid a few trees, and a whole lot of snow that's already been picked over. Why hasn't the clue writer been more specific about what and where?? or has he?? am I missing something? Edit MessageDelete Message

The more I think about it, the less I think sugary loaf refers to Winona. Only because I would have thought they'd obscure the clue a little more than that (sugary loaf = sugar loaf?) Maybe I'm all wet. And the bit about it NOT being along Chippewa really has me stumped. A sugary loaf being a Twinkie seems odd too. Where's the connection to anything else? Would it mean it's in a Twinkie wrapper (or the Twinkie itself) at Winona and Chippewa? at Winona and Cherokee Hts? Man-o-man, they didn't narrow it down much did they? And the stretch from yellow stone to King St. is just way too out there... Edit MessageDelete Message

Chris, I agree clues to the container have been either non-existant or so subtle that one can't figure them out. Some of the guesses have been an Altoid tin (there's a plant that looks kind of like rosebuds on the cover. In acutality, it's a mint plant but whatever...), a bread bag from the "dough" reference, a Cool Whip container from clue 10 (hip = cool + whip = cool whip), in a CD case (don't know where that come from), a Twinkie, a Babe Ruth candy bar (sugary loaf & ball diamond). Any other ideas? Edit MessageDelete Message

2.5" diameter is huge! I'll find it for sure now.

I think the joke will be on all of us come 11:00 pm -- It's between BAKER & KING along CHEROKEE.

Clue #11) ..which claim a sugary loaf (Baker)...which claim a yellow stone (gold..king street) Clue #7) ..lots of dough...Also refers to Baker Street. Clue #5) ..riches also immeasurable (a "King's riches - gold) Clue #4) ..mother lode... Refers to Gold (ie yellow stone)

I remember this hapenning a few years back .. when the Clue (less) God put out clues pointing to a particular place and then threw a curve ball at everyone on the LAST CLUE saying it was in a part of the park no-one really looked. When the explainations came out in the paper - people were pissed!!! - since the clues were all obscure - like yellow stone...gold...king. All teh clues up to the last one could have been one of two places in the park... and he structured it so most people would look where the treasure really is. My guess is that the Clue (less) God is having alot of fun watching people spend all their time digging up on the hill..... not to mention dragging out the hunt is great for circulation. Between Baker and King Street along cherokee - not many people have been over there. pyramids...sliding hill... all that stuff is just identifying the park.

Anyway - regardless...when the explainations come out people will still be scratching their heads on this one. Edit MessageDelete Message

I really think it might be in a piece of already dug up snow/ice all by it's little lonesome. Since the snow came so late this year, they may have had to hide it without a container. Brad B - I wouldn't be surprised if you were right. That's where I was looking yesterday evening, and I WAS ALL ALONE! There is a lot of undug snow over there. And from that point of the park, you can see the domes and the Capital, and the smokestack.

Anyone know if the park-type stuff connected to Baker Rec Center counts as a park? It's run by St. Paul Park & Rec - it's right off Baker & King street, east of Smith street. It's also quite small & inconspicuous. Edit MessageDelete Message

SueBee - 10:51am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6929 of 8458)

Ya know what, Brad? You may just be right. It could be that devious. The clue(less) gods may just be toying with us. The King/Baker clues seems too cryptic - but then I've never found the little bugger! Edit MessageDelete Message

ybnormal - 10:51am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6930 of 8458)

SHERLOCK--- yesterday that also came up and its not considered a park. Soory Edit MessageDelete Message

charlie dandilion - 10:54am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6934 of 8458)

where did the domes come from i have been trying to figure that one for a day now???? Edit MessageDelete Message

Sherlock - 10:54am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6935 of 8458)

I think it's a tennis court right off Cherokee st & King, if I remember correctly. (King - Fame??) Edit MessageDelete Message

Little Mo - 10:55am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6936 of 8458)

Kenute (and others) - I also rely on the net for my clues, so I know nothing about any possible significance to "sugary," but is anyone else troubled/ confused/ intrigued by the use of "locals" instead of "locales"? I can't think of any good anagrams, and I'm certain I must be trying too hard, but shouldn't we at least be able to rely on the newspaper for proper word usage? Edit MessageDelete Message

charlie dandilion - 10:56am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6937 of 8458)

but the tennis courts have been dug out so much in the last couple of days... Edit MessageDelete Message

charlie dandilion - 10:57am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6938 of 8458)

I think personally that locals meens houses. maybe its on the side the houses are on/ Edit MessageDelete Message

Sherlock - 10:58am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6939 of 8458)

Li'l Mo - "locals" refers to people of the area, not "locales" which refers to locations. And actually, the tennis court off King isn't that badly dug up, especially right around it. Edit MessageDelete Message

charlie dandilion - 11:01am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6940 of 8458)

maybe i was wrong then soory but <man i must be tierd> can someone please refer the DOMES??? Edit MessageDelete Message

ybnormal - 11:01am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6941 of 8458)

An anagram of locals could be skoal but that would really be a stretch and I don't think that it would fit with the rest of the clue. Edit MessageDelete Message

MY MOTHER THOUGHT for some reason that it was going to be in aw tin box and that would make scence if it was made to look like just a piece of trash?? not noticeable would you really want to open a chew tin??? Edit MessageDelete Message

Sherlock - 11:04am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6944 of 8458)

Charlie -- "demo of the mode" from clue #4 - anagrams, rearranged both spell dome. Just speculation on our part. The Capital is something Greensleevs2 came up with yesterday - the guy at the top (on the spire) is wearing a cape & riding a horse, clothes don't fit the weather. Edit MessageDelete Message

SueBee - 11:06am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6945 of 8458)

Charlie, I hate to say it, but the dome thing has been beat to death. It refers to either the catheral or the capitol dome which can be seen from Cherokee. Edit MessageDelete Message

Brad B - 11:06am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6946 of 8458)

the tennis courts have not been dug nearly as much as up on the hill. I was at the tennis courts last night... not many people there... lots of fresh snow. Wouldn't that be a B--ch - if it was Baker...King... along Cherokee. It just amazes me that the clues so far point directly to the spot up on the hill, and everyone and their mother in law has been digging up there.

I'll make a bold prediction... it's either between Baker & King along Cherokee...or it will not be found this year. We'll find out tonight. Edit MessageDelete Message

Sherlock - 11:08am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6947 of 8458)

What do you think the medallion is hidden in? Edit MessageDelete Message

Prince Bisque - 11:31am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6957 of 8458)

You know, I think people are barking up the wrong tree when they keep referring to "fame" as if it has any significance. Just about any clue always refers to you getting the treasure and the fortune and fame it encompasses. Doesn't mean fame had anything to do with a major clue. I think the most important part of that clue is where it basically says that it should be near Baker and Prospect. The baker would claim a sugary loaf and the prosect would claim gold - yes, I buy the yellow stone = gold bit!! Edit MessageDelete Message

    Chris Partyka - 11:33am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6961 of 8458)

There is supposedly a large odd-shaped hill in Winona called the, "sugar loaf", and "yellow stone" would refer to "Yellowstone National Park" located in the state of Wyoming. Thus, Winona and Wyoming street. Edit MessageDelete Message

    Andrew Nelson - 11:34am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6962 of 8458)

Yellowstone is in the state of Wyoming, which is also the name of a street that crosses the park. Edit MessageDelete Message

    Brad B - 11:34am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6963 of 8458)

Back to the Baker/King thing along cherokee. I think the fact that the early clues pointed to the sliding hill (#3), playground (#5), etc. point to where everyone is looking, but they are trying to steer you away from Chippewa (#10), towards something else. Is the Baker/King thing a coincidence - I don't think so - I think it's the classic BAIT (up on the hill) with the early clues, and SWITCH with the obscure late clues. Call me crazy but I'll be near the tennis courts at 1:30 this afternoon ... I need a change of scenery. Edit MessageDelete Message

Brought Grillables and everything!...Looked for 2 hours between Winona and Wyoming....Starting to think it might be on the Cherokee Hts side of park since "don't rec attire" might be a steer clear clue....whadda ya think??? Edit MessageDelete Message

    Chris Partyka - 11:53am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6971 of 8458)

At first, I was searching at an area on the sledding hill, that was in view of all of the major clues: the 3 pyramids (shelter) were just sitting above the hill at eye level, the Capitol was easily seen (the dome), as well as being near all the other major landmarks. At first I thought that the, "cape and whip" thing was refering to the statue on top of the Capitol, and the Capitol also has a spire on top of it ("to which you aspire.") But then I came to the idiotic realization that,"cape" and "whip" rearranged spell,"Chippewa". Man am I dumb or what! Edit MessageDelete Message
