The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...

in my humble opinion
there are two clues left. when you concider the size of the park that is plenty. the next clue will cut the park in half, and the last one will X marks the spot of the medallion.
all prevous clues were to get us thinking, excited, and to cherokee park. forget domes, pyramids, and smokestacks.
its needle in a haystack time. at this point, its dumb luck and/or hard work that will get you the medallion. ![]()

Has anyone theorized that the "cape and whip" clue might mean the medallion is hidden in an animal crackers box? The box has a circus ringmaster on it wearing a cape and holding a whip--I think.
That's the only thing I could think of as I drove in the parade from the PP to CP last night.
That or some link to Zorro. Hmmm....

Catch 22 - 12:03pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#5777 of 8458)
Good afternoon all! Just read through the past 200 or so posts trying to get a grip on last nites clue. The whip + cape = chippewa thing looks good but we already know it is at cherokee and telling us a name of a street that runs along the park just doesn't make sense. No one has made reference to the statue on top of the capital bldg. The man leading the horses is wearing a cape and has a whip. Could this mean that you do or perhaps do not ,since it says "not good attire" or whatever (don't have clues in front of me), have to be able to see the capital bldg from where the medallion is at? Any insight? ![]()

Todays's clue Cape and Whip rearannged spell out Chippewa. This helps to place the treasure between Cherokee blvd and Chippewa st. maybe the ball field at the south end of the park which is the intersection of cherokee and chippewa. Or at the other end of the park where Cherokee blvd and Chippewa st intersect. ![]()

youngster--cherokee and chippewa do not intersect at the south end of the park, but they do intersect @ the north end- they both intersect with annapolis on the south end-- at the bottom of the sliding hill, you cannot see the bathrooms- they are only visible to the top 1/4 of the hill if even that much.... i think its in the north end of the park-- on the west side of cherokee ![]()

The PP should sell "medallion hunter" t-shirts, sweatshirts, or hats and have the proceeds go towards and added bonus for the medallion finder. I think alot of people would buy them and it would give more incentive (if any is needed) to hunt for the medallion. ![]()

![]()
Sherlock - 12:28pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#5786 of 8458)
ybnormal -- there was talk of "immeasurable" referring to earl street over at Mound Park, and "dough" referring to Baker street near Cherokee park, so ultimately who knows what the heck it means? What else is immeasurable? (it was an earl, immeasurable wealth) Does anyone know what other streets are over there that it could be? Maybe it's referring to a landmark you can see from where the medallion is??? ![]()
![]()
Sherlock - 12:31pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#5787 of 8458)
Deb -- I wonder about the street thing. the clue says "where three pyramids rise over the snow." Could the medallion be at the BOTTEM of the hill? As you walk up the hill, the pyramids rise over the snow. The street clues point toward the bottem, where chip & chero meet Annapolis. What do you think? ![]()
![]()
SueBee - 12:33pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#5788 of 8458)
Ybnormal, I doubt that immeasureable and dough mean anything. Ususally the clues only hold one piece of information and the rest is just filler for the rhyme. Although, last night's clue possibly being both Chippewa and that the med is in a cool whip container might pan out to be true. ![]()
![]()
A. Metal Detective - 12:33pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#5789 of 8458)

Deb actually that is the middle of the park the park extends NE of Smith, and that area has not been dug up much. The snow is much easier to shovel because it hasn"t been trampled. I think the med.s most like in the center of the park, by the chippewa, cher point. ![]()

Hello all, just returned from CP. I've been lurking around the cooler for a few days now, but only posted a few times. I have been thinking more about the "wrong track" and "to and fro" in the clues alot. I thought maybe by the ball field - in/on the line to the bases. Right by annapolis. Maybe the sidewalk along Chippewa? The WHOLE place is so torn up, it's just unbelievable that no one has uncovered it yet.
Also. believe it or not, I drove home past Mounds to see probably 15-20 people still digging there.(!!) ![]()

Catch 22 - 02:12pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#5931 of 8458)
The spotter idea may be correct. When I was at cherokee yesterday I parked behind a guy that was sitting in his car. He was just sitting and staring out the window. I went out and looked for about 30min then came back to my car to call the fiance and he was still there staring. I went back for about another 30min. Came back, still there. Maybe he was just there for kicks or was cold or something. I never thought he may be watching the medallion. If you go to Cherokee look for a guy in a bluish (maybe brown or black--colorblind) buick 4-door. He was parked along Chippewa just down from Page St. ![]()

Best time to spot a spotter is at 4:30 in the morning when only the spotter is left at the park. Also, maybe look for an older person with no digging tools who is sitting in a parked car and who looks like he or she is scared every time you make a move in an area where you think the medallion is hidden. Maybe they'll have a camera ready to take your picture when you find it. ![]()

My dad talked to a guy at a grocery store. He saw them hide the medallion one year, but didn't realized that's what the man was doing until he read that the med. was found at that park. There wasn't much snow that year, so he just kicked some dirt over it. It snowed later on that week and the snow covered the med. Talk about a lost opportunity. He could have found the med. on clue 1 and made history! ![]()

brian...what is it an anagram of, praytell? ;-) ![]()

An anagram means you can rearrange the letters of the word to form another word. Example: Cape and whip rearranged is Chippewa. demo and mode rearranged each give us dome. ![]()

Another myth is the paper waits until the last couple clues to bury it to sell more papers...any one else have any medallion folklore they'd be willing to share? ![]()

Wallflower, it's funny that you saw praytell, because "aspire" unscrambled gives you "praise". This makes reference to the Church on Annapolis and Cherokee St., if "a spire" already doesn't. ![]()

Was anyone else at the Pioneer Press building last night? If not, then
I have a little story for you. I was about the 15th person in line and at
about 10:55, five minutes before the paper comes out, some 40ish
guy pulls up in a white station wagon and stumbles to the front of the
line. He then ask's the people in the front of the line if this is the place where you turn the medallion in if you found it. The people said yes and he was then buzzed in. He hard a hard time getting the door
open because he was obviously intoxicated. After about 3 or 4 minutes the man emerged from the building and drove around the block. While he was driving around the block, a worker from the Press came out and said that the man claims to be part of a group that found the medallion and that the people with the medallion were
on there way. After the Press worker went back inside, we saw the
man in the station wagon pull into the bank parking lot across the street. After he got out of his car, he walked back over to us and went inside the Press building again. At this point, it was about 11:10
and everybody was getting impatient. The man then headed back to his car but stopped and talked to some people in a truck. The Press worker then came out of the building and said that we could all come in and get a paper now if we wish, but that it could be a big waste of
time since this man claims it has been found. After my group got a paper, we decided to drive back to the man in the white station wagon. When we got there, he was getting in his car, but gladly
came over and talked to us. When we asked him what it was found
in, he hesitantly said a pop can. We then drove off not believing this fool and headed to Cherokee. I can't believe what some people will
do to try and be funny. Sorry this was so long. ![]()

Take heed of the Pioneer Press Operatives. They will be out there tonight. I was digging 3 ft from the medallion last year 12am, last clue,(didn't find it) when a bearded man started hovering around the area. Offered me a doughnut. He had no shovel or anything for that matter to dig with. He stayed in the vicinity for hours. ![]()

In the last 10 years, the wrapper has been disclosed by clue #10 every year...(though IMHO, the wrapper clue is a complete waste...picture this...I unearth a snack-size chip bag and say "oh, i'll throw this away - no wrapper clue reference")...how about Clue 7: "Here's a CLUE to AID your decision" referring to KOOL-AID....i.e. CLUE-AID >>> KOOL-AID... a Kool-Aid package? ![]()

Hey Ian, you dumb bastard, why in the hell would I make this up? And I am not going to give out my real e-mail address. If you would have been in line instead of sitting your ass behind your monitor, you would have seen it also. BTW, Jim Walsh was also there interviewing people in line and he also witnessed this man. Ian, when
in doubt, it's best to remain silent and be thought of as a fool, than to
open your mouth and remove all doubt. ![]()

Hint: If you don't want to dig and you don't mind carring a little extra weight. A quick way to "dig" in some spots, is to bring 2-3 gallons of water and a watering can (flower waterer with wide spout) just pour water over snow and presto-chango no more snow. I know this sounds wierd and gruelling to carry that much water, but trust me it works and you don't have to sift through all the snow chunks to make sure you didn't overlook anything. Run out of water make a quick drive to SA and fill up at the bathroom. ![]()
