Chris Palmer Excellent job on noting Water Street, Wood street ... on either side of Prospect park! I think you've hit on something obvious! Edit MessageDelete Message

Sorry all about the Joe Medallion onslaught. I'm trying to take care of it.

Due to the profanity, we've deleted the offensive messages.

Your help is appreciated. You can post a complaint on the "Talk to PioneerPlanet" discussion area of the Water Cooler. Or e-mail me.

Just Got back in and wanted to thank all of you (DAVE and CK1) for getting a point across to Joe. I feel like I oppened a can of worms when I asked Joe if he went zoom as a child, but it was nice to have the support from everone else that this is a constructive place. I'm sorry I brought this back up, but I had to be herd. Thanks again!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Dave: You are a beautiful man. I hope this is the last piece of a puzzle that will benefit the rest of the avid diggers. You, CK1, Wright Winger, Know It All, Steve Worthman, Paula, Snowball2, and others are proving my theory that this event is one of St. Paul's greatest community showcases. The $4,000 just makes it a little more interesting. Jim Walsh is onto something with that "Clank" article he wrote, but it's the "we were in it together" feeling that most people finish the hunt with. Let's not lose that. Edit MessageDelete Message

Hi to all of the medallion hunters up north from sunny California. I'm browsing through the Water Cooler and getting really homesick. Sure wish I was there for Winter Carnival. Have fun, stay warm and good luck!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Alex Moy - 05:17pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#254 of 8457)

My map shows a playground at the west end of Delos road. Could someone check it out for me. Kids zoom in most playgrounds. Prospect Park looks like a good guess. I only saw Delos, but Wood and Water streets affirm my belief. BTW I am just offering help and not competition as I recently moved to upstate NY (and it isn't sunny here). :( Edit MessageDelete Message

Allie Go - 05:17pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#255 of 8457)

It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood for a treasure hunt. I sipped on coffee and scoped out Mounds Park. I'm convinced it's there. I think I'll go back tonight....see ya there. Edit MessageDelete Message

yack,yack,yack Don't talk back prospect's where the medallion's at.

see ya at prospect ZOOM!!!!!!!!!!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Chris Palmer - 05:26pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#257 of 8457)

There is a playground at Prospect Park. But I still think Mounds works better in a lot of ways. Last year, it all seemed so definite by Clue 4!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Alex Moy - 05:35pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#258 of 8457)

All that we had last year was Como, which is twice the size of both Mounds and Prospect. But, what I wanted is to know what the playground is like. If there are any slides, rosebeds, etc... Edit MessageDelete Message

andyb - 05:45pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#259 of 8457)

Alex M: I'll check out Prospect but I'm in the Mounds Camp for several reasons. 1. "A Large object in view" this must mean something that is in the actual park and not visable from the park. There are too many Large Objects visable from all of these parks with "scenery" to make it plausiable that we are to look outside the park for the LO. One look at the Tower in Mounds will "guide" anyone there. 2. "Woods" in C2 isn't the same as "Wood St." 3. Native Amercian references abound. 4. Playgrounds and places for bikes/sleds are not "kids" specific. "Childs Way" by Mounds is.

Clue 5 will get shovels in hand! (ps. the digger formerly known as n.k.o.b. I got tired typing the "."s) Edit MessageDelete Message

Pat Pfundstein - 06:17pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#260 of 8457)

Moed J. Newell is the man the park is named after, so... Oh what the heck. I give up, it even sounds lame to me. I hope no one actually believed me. Now that the clues are piling up I should stop clowning around (for the most part). I have (really!) leaning toward Highland, but you people have got me switching to Mounds. Still, I have a few questions. Who are the Rosebud Sioux? I have never heard of that branch of the Dakota. (Email me, I really would like to know as a local history geek.) What are the other Dakota references? While you have me turning in the wind, I should point out that all of the clues still apply to Highland with little or no stretching. And even though the third clue often points to what the medallion is hidden that does not preclude a double meaning. Mounds weakness is the lack of sledding (though I suppose it could be one of those RED HERRING sleds.) I agree by the way that the getting together and yakking is the best part of the hunt. Wouldn't mind finding that coin, though. Ta Ta and love to my wife at work! Edit MessageDelete Message

Clara - 06:28pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#261 of 8457)

Mounds would be so obvious right now, but I just cant let go of the feeling I have that it's way too soon for us to know that. Tonights clue should be helpful. There are so many parks it could still be in!!!!! AHHHHH! Edit MessageDelete Message

99 YEAR OF THE COOLER

The reacon is back and Prospect is a little dinky park with a playground. The playground does have two slides and the top of each of these slides is a plastic dome. Its a little interesting but I dont think its there. One couple of hunters there though, good number of hunters at mounds and absoultly no-one at cherokee except a couple kids sleding or as I now refer to as zooming. Hey Pat, how did ya get the cool "Pic. O' Beef"? Edit MessageDelete Message

I don't understand what they meant by demo & mode is there a conection between the words? Must break the code? I see that those 2 words use the same letters to spell 2 different words. I'm leaning towards Highland. Nice Night For A Hunt! Edit MessageDelete Message

Alan Rogers - 07:08pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#267 of 8457)

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in and say that we enjoy the HUNT every year and this is a great way for us hunters to research and share ideas. As for Ideas of ours, they've been covered here already - nice work on the rearranging demo and mode to come up with Moed Newell Pat. I don't think it's there but it was a good effort. The woman and I are headed to scope out Mounds and Cherokee, and what the heck, Prospect may be the resting place for the load.

P.S. Come see MY BAND play at The Fine Line and sign our guestbook on the web page- Happy hunting all! Edit MessageDelete Message

99 YEAR OF THE COOLER

Jane, how do you know all this? I hope your right linking the Rosebud reservation with the sioux who you say built the mounds at mounds park, but it might just be a cawinkedink like mentioning the great battle near the middle for midway at como and lexington was a carrier involved in midway and that is a street near como, so is the rosebud-sioux thing a fluke or does the guy (or girl) expect us to know that. Edit MessageDelete Message

Kitty - 07:21pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#269 of 8457)

If anyone is still interested in the art deco idea the city hall and county

courthouse building is considered to be a prime example of it.

Also clue 2 mentions hidden goods - makes me think of Carver's Cave

which was located at the base of the bluff at the lower end of Mounds Park. There is a marker there across from Plum Street. Edit MessageDelete Message

Loki - 07:24pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#270 of 8457)

Rosebud is a sled so look for any park with a big hill to go sledding. the hill will be the higher ground. as for clue four, it sounds to me like were looking for something related to computers. just a thought? see everyone out there tonight. Edit MessageDelete Message

dave b - 07:26pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#271 of 8457)

just a quick question? isn't "rosebud" a sled? Also the Sioux didn't build the Mounds in Mounds Park, and sledding would if scary it one veered to the left Edit MessageDelete Message

Kitty - 07:29pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#272 of 8457)

When I was a kid they used to slide down the mounds, now kids slide down the hill from the beacon. Edit MessageDelete Message

HELLO! I am but one the three famous medallion NIMRODS...... And I have a feeling that this is our year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

Tom Heikkila - 07:49pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#274 of 8457)

Steve Tylor, if you rearrange the letters of "demo" and "mode" like the authors of the clues did, you can also get the word "dome". From either Mounds or Cherokee you should be able to see both the cathedral and capitol domes. Which one is better for sliding? Of course, this is all assuming that I am understanding the clues right. Also, I have not actually been out to verify sight lines or the presence of a sliding area. If you read some of the previous posts, there is a sliding area at Mounds with a beacon on high ground, does this also give a nice view of the domes? Well, this is my train of thought right now. Now it is time to head out and do some investigating of my theories. Maybe tomorrow I'll think about digging. P.S. Where is Prospect Park? Edit MessageDelete Message

nimrod - 08:02pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#275 of 8457)

I think that all of the clues so far do NOT lead to Mounds park. There is another park that all of the clues fit perfectly, without trying to force the point. It is a park that it has never been at before. That is where the NIMRODS will be, all alone, (so far) Edit MessageDelete Message

BeeyoB - 08:02pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#276 of 8457)

Joe? Where'd Joe go? Good riddens. Mounds seems the spot. The beacon, the sledding hill, Thorn St, etc. Has anyone seen the Virgin Mary display up there (ie Mother lode)? I still think we're missing something with the "code", but I've re-configured that clue endless times and I'm still confused. Isn't Prospect in Sillyapolis?? Luck. Edit MessageDelete Message

coinseeker - 08:05pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#277 of 8457)

Hi Everyone! I tend to think that the word mother must mean something. Why else would he use it? Also, I'm not so sure that the meaning of "Rosebud" has to do with an Indian Tribe. Edit MessageDelete Message

coinseeker - 08:13pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#278 of 8457)

Could he possibly be referencing Roseville? Or is it hidden in a rosebud? Edit MessageDelete Message

nimrod - 08:14pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#279 of 8457)

hey, Robert, if you are going to mounds park you will be wasting your time. That is not where the coin is at!!!!! Edit MessageDelete Message

nimrod - 08:16pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#280 of 8457)

Hello Coinseeker, Roseville is not in the St. Paul limits, which is where you should be according to clue #1 Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 08:17pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#281 of 8457)

Robert: the Prospect Park that keeps coming up is actually the one that's on the West Side of St. Paul. It's a dinky little park and recon from Wright Winger confirms my suspicion that it's too small to support a major dig. Snowball2 got excited about nearby Prospect Terrace Park, but there isn't much land there either. coinseeker: it's definitely in St. Paul, not Roseville. Edit MessageDelete Message

coinseeker - 08:17pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#282 of 8457)

Not necessarily, in the past, he has also used "in a St. Paul park" and it turned out to be in a suburb. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 08:18pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#283 of 8457)

coinseeker: Which year? That would be an unfair clue in my opinion and I'd like to look it up. Edit MessageDelete Message

Well, hello everyone! I don't have the internet at work, so I can only join in the evening. I see that everything I already thought of is printed so I don't have much input. Mounds still sounds really good at this time. The definition of zoom: To climb suddenly and sharply, as an ariplane is a great one for the airport. I don't think the sledding fits real well. But show me a kid who wouldn't love to be in an airplane. Any more thoughts? Edit MessageDelete Message

Wes Evans - 08:24pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#288 of 8457)

I think that the clues of the kids zooming and the rosebud clues might not be refering to each other... just a thought Edit MessageDelete Message

Medallion Fever - 08:25pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#289 of 8457)

nimrod: you wouldn't happen to be one of the three that found it at Battle Creek, would you? Edit MessageDelete Message

nimrod - 08:26pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#290 of 8457)

coinseeker, when he says St. Paul it is inside the city limits, when he says Ramsey County it could be in St. Paul still, but it also could be in a suburb. Edit MessageDelete Message

coinseeker - 08:26pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#291 of 8457)

Medallion Fever - 08:26pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#292 of 8457)

I keep trying to rearrange the letters in mother lode, and get nothing. So it must be referring to the river somehow. Edit MessageDelete Message

In the definition of mother, one of them says Native: one's mother language. And lode is a vein of mineral ore. Also known as lead. The river definition was false, I guess. Of course, my dictionary could be wrong. Edit MessageDelete Message

Pat Pfundstein - 08:48pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#315 of 8457)

My Webster's Unabridged gives a definition of lode as 'a waterway or canal'. It is possible that the Father of Waters is being referred to as the Mother of Lodes, but I really think this just refers to the medallion (the treasure we seek). But then I have never found it. Say, Nimrod, have you checked out Newell Park? Edit MessageDelete Message

New screen name, same old Bob. Has anyone thought of the impact a search has? It seems that they put it in a park that is "under construction" "face lift" etc. Como was that, so was Harriet. Now, I seem to remember Mounds with some face lift stuff going on last summer. Just thinking big picture, and the impact, although safety dosen't fit-it's a long way down at Mounds. Anyone seen the Virgin Mary display up there? Or am I "miss" informed once again? Edit MessageDelete Message

Mounds Update via cell phone, modem, digital two-way, gps, etc. About 25-30 people searching. The Virgin Mary stuff is from the old Mounds Park Hospital. In the foyer, there's a dedication (sp?). Also, what about the park down on Kellogg, where the new bridge is? Any insights? Just speculating waiting for #5, as we think this new clue should nail it down. Edit MessageDelete Message

I just got back from Mounds...only a few people were there when I left tonight. I really wanted to buy the parks book...maybe next time. Last year at Como the clues gave the boundarys (i.e. Horton St.) The clue said something about Dr. Seuss. Well, I'm thinking that "rosebud" simply means Thorn St. That would be another boundary. Ahoy there fellow medallion hunters! Mounds Park seems to be the hot spot this evening. There were about 30 people diggin' when we left to scout out Cherokee and Prospect parks. Prospect seems like it could be the spot but it's too small to accomidate a large searching party. Cherokee doesn't seem like a suitable resting place for the treasure but it's still early. 11:30 is taking forever to get here! POWER TO THE PEOPLE! I'm Still sticking mainly with Mounds until this next clue comes out.Clue #6 should seal things up. But for now Prospect and Swede Hollow Aren't bad ideas either. A couple of directional links follow below. Just type these in or drag and highlight them and hit control+c to copy then move to location to open and hit shift+insert!

I was out tonight at Mounds and could only see the Capitol dome. It was dark and foggy so maybe you can see both. If looking downtown from MOunds, the Capitol dome is a major feature on the skyline. In regards to an earlier post about the big 1, nice theory but it requires reading alot into the clue. Edit MessageDelete Message

It seems to me the Uban-Suburban may be a little far-fetched. Of course, BURNS also fits there! Don't get me wrong, I'm sure its at Mounds. Its just not giving us anything more specific inside Mounds. None of those 3 streets intersect. Urban is actually a few blocks away according to my map. But come to think of it, there is a thin stretch btwn the road and the cliff. I think 'place to play' is specific to a playground or sled hill Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 01:27am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#397 of 8457)

See, the fancy stuff isn't so hard to do, so let's center more on deciphering clues than on showing each other up. The occassional bold or color can be helpful to draw attention to something, but there's no need to splatter our senses. Back to the latest clue: I think this is the typical "so you think you know where it is" clue that falls near the end of the first week. Sure, there's some strong, descriptive words to dig apart here, but I think it's a stall tactic. They have "place to play" kinds of clues every year. "City streets" is key because "they" (plural) will show you the way. "Suburban Ave." and "Urban Pl." are a better interpretation than anyone's giving credit for at this wee hour (way to go Tom). I'm also beginning to think Thorn Street is a nice idea for "Rosebud." Sure, the clue probably has something to do with the movie, but clues have been known to have double meanings. Take care all. Seeya' when it's light out. Edit MessageDelete Message

Diaper Boys - 01:27am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#398 of 8457)

HEY TREASURE HUNTERS!

Mounds Park seems to be the early choice of everyone....and not a bad choice based on the given clues.

By the way it's not attached to a rose container...How do I know you ask? Because I have held the coveted prize and watched as people frantically dug and scraped hoping to find it unknowing that it had been found...it's to big to fit in a rose holder, it's a little bigger then a rosebud.

Dale Gormanson - 08:54am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#409 of 8457)

Hello treasure hunters: after talking with the sleuths at work we figure "rosebud" refers to Citzen Kane which Orsen Wells wrote. It's about a newspaper man, and was a take off of William Randolf Hearst--a newspaper publisher. Anyway the Pioneer Press Printing Bldg is in great view across the great Missisippi from Mounds Park--which is high ground. Kids go zoom in the playground, the anagram "dome" fits, i.e., the capital...It's amazing that the Mounds at the Park are believed to be 1500-2000 years old and the Hopewell people buried their people there. The archelogist diggers were probably as exicited as the digger who finds the hidden treasure--if its at the park....P.S. the large object that guides the way may be the beacon...duke Edit MessageDelete Message

I'm stuck on: "To riches that are almost immeasurable." Help me out. Could it just be he's being more specific as he refers to the Indian Mounds? I can't think of anything else...unless maybe there's no way to measure where the Medallion is because it's randomly in the middle of a piece of land with no markers. That seems unlikely though. Snowball2 - 10:42am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#439 of 8457)

It's been bothering me, so I have to at least throw it out there.

What about the Capitol Mall and the Ice Skating rink that the built?? (kids go zoom?, The dome??, the capitol as a marker?). The streets don't make sense though.

Any thoughts?? Edit MessageDelete Message

Pat Pfundstein - 10:44am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#440 of 8457)

Clayland Place and Clayland St intersect but I'm again being a fool! It's a tiny park with NO sledding, no woods, no water no rosebuds! Edit MessageDelete Message

Mr. Know It All - 10:46am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#441 of 8457)

It's called (Officially) Prosperty Heights Park. It's between White Bear Ave. and Hazelwood on Maryland Ave...................................... Edit MessageDelete Message

CK1 - 10:47am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#442 of 8457)

From Prospect "lode" park, Cherokee Park "high ground" You can: "watch for a place where Kids like to zoom" at the Harriet Island. You can see "Water and Woood in the neighborhood" (Street names). You have to take "city streets" to get there. You can see the Capitol and Cathedral domes, The 1st bank sign is clearly visible ("the lucky one" "the first to say"). How does "Rosebud" fit? perhaps the thing the medallion is in/attached to? What do you think? Edit MessageDelete Message

Patty Wegener - 10:47am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#443 of 8457)

Just found Prosperity Park. There's a road called "East Rose Street" just south of Prosperity Park. It's off of Maryland Ave. or Cty. 31. Edit MessageDelete Message

Alan and Jill

Sorry about this in advance but i just want to see if y'all would add anything to it:

Clue 1

The season has begun for wintry fun And here's what you need to know If you want to end up as the lucky one (first reference to "one") A St. Paul park is where you must go (it's in St. Paul!)

Clue 2

In the neighborhood are water and woods (street names; golfing; drinking fountain; actual water+trees?) And lots of scenery all around (how come he used the word lots instead of alot? Referring to flower planters- little lots (Planters) of flowers around?) So if you want to find the hidden goods (hidden falls? too obvious!) Look for a place with high ground. (mounds, hills, cliffs, plateaus, or maybe he means the medalion is not on the ground but is high up)

Clue 3

Roses don't bloom in winter's gloom (thorn street?) But a "Rosebud" could still give pleasure. (Rosebud brand sleds?) So watch for a place where kids like to zoom, (Zoom: flying, sledding, sliding, swinging) And you just might take home our treasure.

Clue 4

A large object in view will help guide you, (the airport beacon, the capitol, the big "one") But first you'll have to crack our code. So here's a demo of the mode to pursue, (two domes from demo and mode= the capitol and Cathedral) As you hunt for the mother lode. (Lode= river, vein of lead)

Clue 5

We'd be the first to say that a place to play (Second reference to "one"; Playground, tennis court, b-ball court/fields) Can make any winter more pleasurable (warming house, indoor sports?) City streets will also show you the way (Urban Pl. and Suburban Blvd) To riches that are almost immeasurable (???????????????......... Edit MessageDelete Message

Someone mentioned Citizen Kane earlier. As far as I know the name of the SLED was Rosebud. Edit MessageDelete Message

Kathy - 11:18am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#462 of 8457)

My Mom was saying that riches immeasurable might mean "Mounds of riches", which might refer to Mounds Park... Just a thought! Edit MessageDelete Message

C Wheaton - 11:18am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#463 of 8457)

Lode in the dictionary also refers to a waterway. Mother Lode (Mississippi river). I agree with the reference to 1's, that's the firstbank sign. People are reading too much into the rosebud clue, it simply means sledding (Citizen Kane). I like the dome, mode, demo corolation, that's wither the capitol or cathedral. I like the Urban street argument and the measureable is probably what it's in. A cup perhaps. Edit MessageDelete Message

ill find it - 11:20am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#464 of 8457)

any ideas what the "large object" is Edit MessageDelete Message

Kathy - 11:25am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#466 of 8457)

Snowball2 - 11:34am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#471 of 8457)

Maybe I am digging too hard.

Immeasuarable= Unable to be measured, quantified.

Scale= Unit used to measure.

What is a scale that you can't measure with?? A Musical Scale!!!

Do any of our fore-runner parks have summer (or winter?) music festivals?? Edit MessageDelete Message

The best place to hide something is the last place anyone would look.

The last place anyone would look is where it was hidden last time.

Near last year's site you can see the como observatory dome, the sledding hill on McMurray field, and a city street that shows you the way (midWAY parkWAY). There are many water sources and woods (both trees and golfing) and winter places to play (ski hills and broomball rinks). But, perhaps the clincher is "Rosebud". Directly between the dome and the sledding hill, close to midway, is a plaque to Larry Hodgson which reads "he left the roses here". I.e. he was a buddy to roses or a rose bud. Coincidence? Perhaps. Edit MessageDelete Message

Desire-to-win - 11:38am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#474 of 8457)

I think the best idea is not to read a lot into the clues. As a previous winner said. Go back to the basics. Edit MessageDelete Message

Desire-to-win - 11:41am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#475 of 8457)

I agree with Laura. What better place than last year. Great idea. Thanks for the info. Edit MessageDelete Message

CK1 - 11:47am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#476 of 8457)

Snowball2 Is it significant that it says "Almost Immeasurable" meaning it can still be measured? Edit MessageDelete Message

Kathy - 11:47am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#477 of 8457)

This is a long shot - so don't get mad at me - but has anyone noticed that the word "so" is listed three times in the clues, all on the third line? Now, I was looking at my city map, and the train tracks under Mounds Park is for the S.O.O. Railroad. What do you think? Coincidence? Edit MessageDelete Message

Kathy - 11:50am Jan 29, 1998 CST (#478 of 8457)

If you rearrange the letters in "almost", you can spell "am lost". I don't know about you, but I certainly feel that way! Edit MessageDelete Message

think we need to wait for tonights clue, that should narrow it down to the exact park. too confusing for me still, mounds is my guess, somewhere in the location of the playground Edit MessageDelete Message

Desire-to-win - 12:12pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#481 of 8457)

There's a lot of people looking at Mounds as we speak. If it's there, it'll probably be found today. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 12:17pm Jan 29, 1998 CST (#482 of 8457)

Hey, all. Lots of new folks are getting in on the action. Good to see. I haven't come up with much more since last night, but I'm staying in the Mounds camp. The "city streets" clue comes at the right time because this is about when they start bordering the medallion. Since I'm about 300 miles from the dig site: I was hoping for some eyes on a few questions. Is the Mounds playground pretty well dug up? How are the sightlines to the more obvious points of reference? Does it look like there could be more burial mound trouble this year or are people behaving? My guess is that the playground is simply visible and that it's not in the playground area. I spent too much time digging up the Harriet Playground to fall for that one again.
