B.J. Mack - 04:39pm Jan 25, 1998 CST (#9 of 8457)

Any early guesses on where the medallion is hidden?

It hasn't been at Phalen Park since 1983. And it hasn't been at Kellogg Park since 1985. Those are two large St. Paul parks that are at the top of my list.

Any thoughts on what it'll be hidden in? Last year it was in a Curad box, in a Skoal tin in 1996 (how un-P.C.!). I think it'll be in something related to our new hockey team, maybe in a plastic puck you can open up. Either that or in an Altoids tin.

See you out there! Edit MessageDelete Message

Hey, how about Newell Park. It has the woods, and a lake across the street. And I've heard a lot of people get high there. By the way, the lake across the street is in the county compost heap. Does that count as a park, because there are at least three or four trees which technically could make them a woods. I'll be there digging. Edit MessageDelete Message

Hey Mr. Know it All,

Do you really think that they would pick the same park (Battle Creek 95), (Cherokee Park 92), (Highland Park 94).

Our instincts are Phalen Park, Mounds Park, or Kellogg Park is a good possibililty. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 02:34pm Jan 26, 1998 CST (#22 of 8457)

It's good to see some familiar names from last year, particularly "Mr. Know it All." I'm stuck in Milwaukee again this year so I'll have to use my mental map of the park system and extensive list of past hunt information to be of any use. Mounds and Cherokee are the highest grounds I can think of. I'm prone to Cherokee for the fact that the High Bridge is nearby. But I'm also stuck on the use of the word "hidden" in the 2nd clue. Historically, it's the little words that you take for granted that are most important, so I'm thinking Hidden Falls is a possibility. And I wouldn't try to figure out how long it's been since it was at a given park. Last year's Como Park hiding place threw out all of our pattern-searching efforts. Good luck to all! B.J. Mack - 08:57pm Jan 26, 1998 CST (#33 of 8457)

Is there anything specific in these first two clues that's sending people to Phalen...or are you just headed there on a gut feeling, because it hasn't been there since '83?

The "hidden" in today's clue has got me thinking about Hidden Falls. Of course, it was just there in '93 (in the diaper). Edit MessageDelete Message

99 YEAR OF THE COOLER

I dont know about anyone else but I havent been able to get anything about the medalion from the winter carnival page since last Friday. I personally dont see anything linking the medalion to Phalen, but its always where people want to go look, for no reason other than it hasnt been there since 83', and I think the "hidden goods" line is too obvious for hidden falls. I beleave its a park near downtown on one of the bluffs, but I think that every year, it costed me many a tear for the last nine year. Looks like I'm screwed for treasure hunting this year, no car for now. I have no choice but to try and help those posting find it. Here we go. Cross Off Highland, Como, Harriet Island, Battle Creek. It was in Cherokee Park back in 1992, they've never been that close together and that includes this year. Remember, if thereis no scenery it is OUT! Not necessarily does the whole park have to be on high ground, possibly just a part of it (maybe where the treasure is). So Far, with not much thinking - in Mounds Park seems like a favorite, if they stay with the recent trend of hiding in big parks, that might rule out a park like Linwood Park, but ya never know for. Clue 2 mentions water, remember could be any kind of water, river, lake, water utility building, watertower, who knows, don't be closed minded about that. Woods more than likely means actual "woods", but count on that. Continue Later, Maybe it will finally be in Phalen again. Edit MessageDelete Message

KRasmussen - 12:33am Jan 27, 1998 CST (#43 of 8457)

okay ready all you computer hunters. should I make it in clue form or just tell you how to find the clues? 1 get to pioneer planet front page. 2. go towards bottom of page it has a picture of the button on it stating Everything you wanted to know about the medallion. 3. click on to the icon. Yea you have solved the clues. See you all out there. Besides it's not so cold out to go downtown and get the paper at 11:00. See you when it gets busy and remember the paper cost 35 cents now. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 01:23am Jan 27, 1998 CST (#44 of 8457)

I want the clues to mean more than they do (for example: "Rosebud" = a street named Wells or Kane; the word "hidden" = Hidden Falls) but I think all we're getting beyond the normal park and water clues is that the medallion is at the top of a sledding hill. Maybe "Rosebud" could double for a summertime flowerbed, but I doubt they'd lead the "diggers" to something they could destroy. A high-ground park like Cherokee or Mounds is starting to lose luster with the 3rd clue. Phalen may be worth a snoop simply because it's been so long since they put it there. Edit MessageDelete Message

Chris Swenke - 07:15am Jan 27, 1998 CST (#45 of 8457)

I would have to agree with Greg Sax about the difficulty of the clues, but on the other hand you don't see me with the medallion.

I'm leaning toward Highland Park for a couple of reasons that I will defulge to any interested. (just write)

I was planning on checking tommorrow night but todays clue seems to point me in the same direction I was going on clue two, so I will be seeing you all tonight.

It doesn't seem the same when it's above zero but I'll bear it. Edit MessageDelete Message

Woops! I was in a coma yesterday!!!!!!! I completely mentally blocked out hidden falls, another high place.........Hey Mr. Sax how the hell are ya! Good to have you back Gregie!!!!!!!!! This clue (#3) is telling you that it is attached to a rosebud (flower maybe, some type of a container with that word on it " maybe". Clue (#2) In the neighborhood are water and woods. Could be a golf course, ( woods, the club type) water (the hazard type). Just giving you something to chew on while i'm tied down to my desk. Yes, kids like to zoom (sliding). ( Highland Park is an early guess.) Edit MessageDelete Message

Phalen has sledding, nice thinking about water and wood being a golf course, but would they golf us 2 years in a row? Maybe the place where kids like to zoom is a reference other than sledding? like to get high. I know some gets who love to drive very fast down water street cuz they can get air on some big bump somewhere. I do think the first line of clue 3 is a reerence to an outdoor garden, but isnt there a Rose street somewhere? Edit MessageDelete Message

Alex Moy - 11:00am Jan 27, 1998 CST (#57 of 8457)

Rose ave. also goes into Como Sr. High, where I know they do plenty of "bud." I would say either Como, Marydale park (the real name for Leob Lake park), or the high school. From a map I have, it looks like Marydale isn't very flat. Edit MessageDelete Message

Mr. Know It All - 11:05am Jan 27, 1998 CST (#58 of 8457)

You came to the right person, the wealth of knowledge. Loeb Lake as it's formerly known as (New Name Mary-Dale Park). This is on Maryland Ave. & Dale St. Hence the name. The Rosebud clue is generally the clue ( #3) where he tells you what it's going to be found in or attached to. Glued to a plastic rosebud, a container with a rosebud on the top etc. (that is why you could search in mounds park..........But try Highland the clues make more sense. Edit MessageDelete Message

Oh that dreaded Como Park issue. It was hidden there last year, across the street from the Conservatory on Eastbrook. I had heard that there is construction going on over there as of now. When I look at the park book, there is a monument in Como Park off on Midway Parkway the Clarence Curran Hodgson Field Monument "Larry Ho" with the inscription "He left the roses here". Could it be, again??? Give some feedback on this idea. My gut instincts are still telling me Mounds Park or Phalen and roses in the clue might mean something that it is buried in. Usually Clue 2 to 3 tells us what they put that little needle-in-haystack in. Edit MessageDelete Message

CK1 - 11:26am Jan 27, 1998 CST (#61 of 8457)

Hey, Greg Sax, It's good to hear that I'm not the only one who looks for hidden (more clever) meanings in the clues -- I keep wanting to give the clue-giver more credit than I should. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 12:16pm Jan 27, 1998 CST (#62 of 8457)

Hooking up Rose to Marydale/Loeb is a neat idea but there isn't much "scenery all around." I grew up just 2 blocks away so I'm pretty familiar with the territory. There's only a couple of possible sledding locations, too, and one of them brings you up near a railroad track (too dangerous). It hasn't been at Marydale since 1972...so maybe. As for the Rose connection to Newell - too obscure. I don't think they would alienate potential diggers with that. Remember: by clue #3 last year all we had was a northern park, a speed limit, and the visibility of Bandana Square (if you were really clever). Clue #4 gave us "Cuomo." Tonight's clue should do the trick. Edit MessageDelete Message

Forget Marydale.. There is nothing there. Another thing to consider is that Rose also ends at;Edgewater park/Beaver Lake,Phalen,Como Park, and several playgrounds. There is a street at mounds that is named Thorn@Eral and ends at Mounds. If you however find your kid sledding there they will be at the bottom of the cliff, and a little dead. I don't now about that aspect. Dan R. St.Paul Parks and Rec. NO THEY DON'T TELL ME WHERE IT IS! Edit MessageDelete Message

R C - 01:10pm Jan 27, 1998 CST (#67 of 8457)

I'm thinking Hidden Falls park. There's definite scenery & high ground. Obvious water & woods (maybe too obvious). Is there any sledding there? Or, as someone already mentioned, the word "zoom" could mean kids getting drunk or high - I know kids like to do that there. (But, it would be kind of tacky putting that in a clue though). On lunch time we took a visual view at Mounds Park. There is activity out there. There have been diggers at the outlook, but no slidding area for the kids. There is a small area west of the beacon where there was some sliding activity. We are still stumped on the clue word "Rosebud". I think this is trying to tell us a person, name, or thing, a noun. Why is the word in parantheses and capitalized? Also the word zoom on our spell checker gives the meaning "swiftly (airplane).Well,we need another CLUE!!!! Great whether for a hunt today. To All: this ain't a flame, but please think about following the thread of our conversation before posting. Many good thoughts lie in past posts; To CK1: As I recall, Steve's guide contains some nice drawings of park layouts that street maps don't give you - could be helpful for those "near 3 trees" kinds of clues; To Mr. Know It All: No brothers but lots of friends in the Rice Street area; give me an age group and I can drop some names; Speaking of Rice Street: McCarron's is unlikely as it's in Roseville. Same goes for all places that don't actually end in "Park." Aside from 1989, the year it was at the Capitol Grounds, it hasn't been anywhere other than at an official public "Park" since 1969. It has never been at a recreation center like Oxford or North Dale so I wouldn't even consider looking at a place like that. People do every year anyway! Edit MessageDelete Message

Wright Wringer, the small park you are looking for is Newell Park. The medallion is most definitely there, and I don't mind saying so because a) nobody will believe me, and b) I would not mind the company of discerning minds like mine. Greg Sax, I beg to differ with you, this is the exact time for people to read too much into the clues, because it is too soon for loads like me to dig. By the way, last year's third clue did more than point a general direction; it not only pointed to Bandana Square, but to the fact that the prize was wrapped in a bandana. Finally, anyone who doesn't think that 'Rosebud' refers to a sled (at least in its primary meaning) should report to the Frog Pond right now and start digging. Actually, my wife saw people digging last year in St. Paul Park, and I think that is even more pathetic than the last day diggers in the Frog Pond. See ya out there (I'm the goofy looking guy. Oh, how I wish I wasn't stuck in Milwaukee right now because Clue No. 4 is a good one. Let's try this...usually when the clue brings up a code it's a word game; right after we're given the code clue, we get the words "demo" and "mode;" played a different way this could be "dome." Now it's not customary to bring anything Minneapolis into the game, but the code makes sense. All I have is a map to work with, but I'm going back to Clue No. 2 and the use of the word "hidden" because Hidden Falls may have strong sightlines at high ground. I know you can see the tall buildings from Mounds, but I don't know about the Metrodome. Pat Pfundstein: Newell is a tangle of a park so if I'm right about the dome, I'd be surprised if you can see it from there. I really have to get some of my St. Paul cronies to be my eyes for me. I'm blind out here in the land of beer. Edit MessageDelete Message

vince w herntier - 12:11am Jan 28, 1998 CST (#125 of 8457)

I think the word we want to apply the "demo/mode" code to is the word "code" itself which would give us deco as in art deco. The large object to help guide us is no doubt art deco. Edit MessageDelete Message

Dave VanHorn - 12:11am Jan 28, 1998 CST (#126 of 8457)

I've got a better one for you, now don't jump into your car yet, but the very last time it was hidden in mounds park there was a clue that specifically suggested the dome of the cathedral, makes sense again. Kids zooming could mean the freeway (I94 below the park) and lode could easily refer to the mississippi, well good luck all keep thinking! Edit MessageDelete Message

Demo/Mode > Dome. You can easily see the dome of the cathederal from the park itself. The beginning of the clue could mean the dome is the large object or there could be another large object either in the park or out of it that points (guide you) in the direction or lines you up with the Medallion...Who Knows for sure probably that night editor, Casey. :) Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 12:26am Jan 28, 1998 CST (#129 of 8457)

Nice going, Dave! As a deep-down St. Paulite I don't know why my first instinct was to put "dome" to Metrodome. Capitol and Cathedral are way more likely choices. Clue No. 5 from 1987, the last time it was at Indian Mounds Park, reads as such: "Whatever the season, this dome's a proud sight. And through many a wedding, it's been a delight." That's a little more obvious than this year's clue, but Mounds is the best bet so far. I'm moving my "people" in that direction. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 01:05am Jan 28, 1998 CST (#130 of 8457)

For those looking in Highland, I would stop wasting time, particularly if you're going with the use of "high ground" in Clue 2. They used all sorts of clues to get you to "Highland" in '94. I'm looking at the fact that they chose to put high with ground as to rhyme with Mound. With the "dome" clue out there now, it's easy to work your particular park into that angle. But Mounds is undeniably strong now. As Dave suggested, "lode" is defined as a waterway (Mississippi), which is another sealant for Mounds. So we need to go back to "Rosebud." I'm with the faction that believes it refers to what the medallion is hidden in or attached to. Small sled keychain? Name-brand product? Any help from the gallery? Talk to you when it's light out. The beacon tower (large object?) was erected in 1929 during the end of the Art "DECO" (literally Crack or Split the word "CODE" and rearrange) period which was marked chiefly by geometric motifs, curvelinear forms, sharply defined outlines and bold colors. The tower was restored as a historical landmark in 1995. The beacon was part of the system that "guided" airmail pilots of that era before there were reliable radio navigation signals available to pilots. As a flyer myself, the beacon has guided me nicely into St. Small and saved my rear at least once while flying under marginal VFR. Was there an hour ago and only noticed three cars parked and/or checking. Where are all the other maniacs? Will swoop up there again this wee am to move more under D-cell shine. Honk at me in the blue Volvo wagon. Edit MessageDelete Message

Dave VanHorn - 04:10am Jan 28, 1998 CST (#134 of 8457)

Why else would you throw two words like demo and mode in there, surely you don't need them specifically to help the clue rhyme - and appearing in the very line after mentioning a code to be cracked, almost right next to each other -too coincidental, too many other words to use there. Bring on the next clue, good luck someone! Wish I had a damn car this year. For now assume Rosebud means what the medallion is attatched to as usual in #3 or #4. Looks like Mounds, but never rule out the others, not until after clue 6 (usually...eh?...right?....I hope.... Edit MessageDelete Message

To whom it may concern:

REASONS FOR HIGHLAND PARK: My ramblings are confused but connected I hope we can bring them together.

CLUE ONE: Obviously in a park, but maybe some thing else to be gained from it at a later point. CLUE TWO: In the Neighborhood are water and woods; Surrounded by homes and two watertowers and a water treatment facility. Woods can either mean golf or trees witch are both plentiful. High Ground: Highland park, and the two water treatment mounds.

CLUE THREE: "Rosebud" can mean three things, the container/attachment or near a church/funeral parlor ("Rosebud" was a dieing word) both next to the park, the sled in the movie had "Rosebud" printed on it hence a sledding area. Leaning toward container/attachment. Kids like to Zoom: Hockey arena at Highland Park.

CLUE FOUR: Large object(s) will help guide you, water towers at park are dome shape and are in view down a scenic path of woods that begin with a sledding area and hockey arena where kids go zoom.

The zoom could also refer to kids on bikes, cuz I remember biking when I was younger at Mounds park and getting good speed on the bike pathes down the hills, but I spose kids could sled down the bike paths (if not shoveld) but it would be fairly close to Shepard Rd. I'm thinking Mounds -- all the clues point there: Childs Road (kids go zoom). Dome anagram (Capitol dome is in view). Someone did mention prospect park, nice view, small park though. Although if you follow alex moy's demo=mode then lode=delo(s) road, that runs right through the corner of prospect park. Just keeping everything in mind. Wouldn't think they would already hide it in Cherokee again since 1992. Just a thought, what if every clue was supposed to match in more than one park in the same area until the very end, when it is revealed it is in a small park like prospect, who knows, i doubt it though. Keep hunting, keep updating, and if someone on the water cooler here wins, ya gotta mention the Cooler! Edit MessageDelete Message

think it is at cherokee heights park or prospect terrace park. Edit MessageDelete Message

R C - 01:57pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#178 of 8457)

the dictionary describes the work "lode" as a vein of mineral ore - do you think "Prospect" would fit in here? Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 01:58pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#179 of 8457)

The Arlington ballfields are officially known as "Rice & Arlington Field;" it's not a "Park." Prospect Park is in Minneapolis! That's a no-go. foolsbee: Mounds overlooks downtown and is on a bluff over the Mississippi; follow 94 or take E. 3rd St. from downtown to Mounds Blvd. But really, you can't do this hunt without a good map. Ask any longtime digger. Edit MessageDelete Message

Snowball2 - 02:01pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#180 of 8457)

RC Prospect Park is near Ohio Hill on the West Side. Prospect Blvd.

Foolsbee Mounds park is near Daytons Bluff. Between Mounds Blvd. and Warner Road. Parallel to the river, across from St. Paul Airport. Edit MessageDelete Message

cold toes2 - 02:02pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#181 of 8457)

just got back from mounds park, lots of maybe places to look. i always wonder when they hide it. there wasn't much snow until a few weeks ago. a few people looking by the cliffs, why would they put it some where dangerous, someone else showed me some dried roses they picked, i don't think they want us digging by rosebushes. i cann't wait for clue 5. see you all out there. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 02:09pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#182 of 8457)

Ohhh, "Prospect Terrace Park" ... not the one with the Witch Hat. This is an interesting idea. It's small, but so was Marydale, Newell, and Langford! Whatever contingent is out there, please keep the Water Cooler informed! Edit MessageDelete Message

Dave VanHorn - 02:15pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#183 of 8457)

Yeah still lean towards Mounds, unfortunately don't know it all to well. Prospect with an outside shot, I remember going there the year it was at Cherokee for about an hour, pretty small. Has anyone here actually bought or seen this book that was written with maps and key items and areas listed for every park? What do ya think of it? Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 02:17pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#184 of 8457)

Again, I'm off a couple of blocks! I finally see the little corner of "Prospect Park" that Dave and Snowball2 are speaking of. How are the sightlines there? Certainly is high ground but can't imagine kids zooming there. "Prospect Terrace Park" has the climbable tower for nice views of the city, but that seems too dangerous an area for the inevitable swell of diggers. Edit MessageDelete Message

RC .. I don't remember people sliding in the park proper, but I know people who would slide on poorly plowed, low-traffic streets in that area.

CK1 .. Good pull on the KIDS as Goats, definately a clue to Daytons Bluff?

Allen Jaques .. Prospect overlooks The Mighty Miss, and it faces west twords downtown, Maybe you could see the Cathederal, I'm not possitive, but by geom. standards it's possible Edit MessageDelete Message

Joe, remarks like "I'm going to kill you" don't really cut it here or anywhere. If you continue to write abusive remarks towards people, I and others here will contact your school and have your email priviledges removed. It is very easy for the Pioneer Planet to trace your provider also, a detailed script shows exactly where you came from, down to the specific pc you are using. Terroristic threats are not tolerated here or any public site on the net. The Winter Carnival is fun. Searching is fun. Writing to others about something you have in common is fun. Your remarks are not fun to anyone but yourself. There are people in this forum from age 5 to 95, and we'd like to enjoy this once-a-year activity. Edit MessageDelete Message

CK1 - 04:34pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#243 of 8457)

wright winger At the risk of incurring more death threats from our angry colleague, Prospect Terrace is very small and would be very dangerous with the hundreds of ravenous diggers clamoring to find the lode. I can not imagine the Paper would open themselves up to any liability. Along with that, they probably wouldn't hide it in (or near) newly planted rose bushes (at Mounds).

PS -- Way to go, Paula! Edit MessageDelete Message

Paula - 04:36pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#244 of 8457)

My lead is on the net - a local site. I'm not sure, but I bet we will see clues that lead to local St. Paul sites, as they are trying to promote the Pioneer Planet and others. We have registered buttons - will join with a group to search if interested. Send email if interested. I also believe the "dome" is the capitol only and Child's Road is the overlook point. I think Rosebud refers to a Chief burried at the park - the clue being "the park as a location" and "burried" - but I sure wish it wasn't underground! We nearly froze to death last year out at Como. Edit MessageDelete Message

Greg Sax - 04:37pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#245 of 8457)

A bit of an aside (sorry): Does anyone have Clue No. 12 from last year? It was never posted on Pioneer Planet and I'd like to have it for my collection. E-mail it to me at saxx@execpc.com if you can help me. Thanks in advance. Edit MessageDelete Message

Chris Palmer - 04:40pm Jan 28, 1998 CST (#246 of 8457)

For what it is worth, looking at a map, Prospect Park is in the center of Water, Wood and Delos streets. It is quite a small park without great reserves of parking that this event seems to require and it offers no sledding options. It does offer views of both the Capital and Cathedral. Mounds Park seems to meet more of the requirements, assuming that the Rosebud and zoom clues must to refer to sledding. If they don't, the Native American reference is a good back-up. And Joe, if I have somehow offended you, I apologize. Edit MessageDelete Message
